What do you know that most people don’t?

The Audi A8…. She's a beauty…. No Questions in that… huh. But what makes an Audi A8 really really special?? One of the Lowest Cabin Noise tested in any car. You wouldn't hear a thing inside… But How Quiet?? 59 dB if you're cruising at 100KMPH. yeah that's the sound inside a Quiet Library. But… How do they do it?? There are mainly three factors that accounts to cabin noise. 1). ENGINE SOUND. This noise can be eliminated by an efficient exhaust system and using softer engine mounts. Thanks to Audi.. they have the best in class engine designs. 2). THE TIRE This can be minimized using softer tires. As a general rule, the wider the tire, the greater the contact area, the greater the sound. 3). WIND A cruicial factor that accounts to noise at all speed levels. Thanks to Audi for their advanced aerodynamic design. They're the best in aerodynamics too. I always wonder why aren't they in the aircraft manufacturing business yet? Apart from these regulars, here comes the real attraction of an Audi A8. Active Noise Cancellation Audi A8 comes with Bang and Olufsen 23 piece advanced Speaker system. How is that even possible??? NOISE CANCELLATION?? Are you kidding? You know… sound is just a pressure wave with ups and downs. So… what if you create another wave, which is just like the one below. Imagine if we superimpose both?? IT CANCELLS OUT….. This is ecactly the same that Audi is doing… Several microphones present throughout the body picks up the noise. This is then cancelled out using the 23 speaker High Definition 3D audio systems… POWER OF GERMAN TECHNOLOGY.. SIMPLY AUDI. Hope everyone likes this… Thanks…. Have a great 2020.

Are Audi cars reliable?

I’ll preface by mentioning that I’ve driven nearly 2 million kilometers in a variety of American, Japanese, British, French, German and Swedish cars. My father was a mechanic. My brother was service manager for both Toyota and VW dealerships. I’ve had VW cars and vans and still own the last VW truck sold in North America (bought new in Oct. ‘92), we’ve had 2 A6 wagons, 1 A6 twin-turbo sedan with 6-speed manual, I’m driving an A4 Quattro Avant now, and I’ve also owned Mercedes S-Class, and I have a ’93 300SEC Cabrio (the last year that they were hand-built by Karmann, with global production less than 1,000 units). If you are talking about Audis built in the last 20 years, the answer is YES they are reliable — provided that you perform the maintenance needed. If you have a turbo engine, such as the 1.8t or 2.0t (or TDI) then you must spend the $$$ for the approved oil. If you think you are saving $$$ by using normal oil, you will find that the oil is cooked as it goes through the glowing-hot turbo and turns into goo, and you will discover VW/Audi’s infamous “sludge problem”. The sludge problem is not a vehicle problem. It is an owner problem. Putting in cheap oil will not save money. Our 1998 A6 wagon (that was the old style, the sedans changed in ‘98, but wagons weren’t updated till ‘99) was purchased with > 200,000 MILES on it. My 2000 A6 2.7t had 170,000 miles on it. My wife’s second A6 wagon, a 2001, came from Utah with 168,000 miles on it. And the 2006 A4 was bought in Vancouver BC with 117,000 kms (due for a timing belt) and rattling like a diesel because it had no oil-pressure due to sludge, because the idiot dealer that bought it at the auction did a quick $29 oil-change on it. (the 2.0t takes oil that is normally CAD$17/litre but it comes on sale at Canadian Tire a few times a year for half that price). The cars are supremely reliable and parts are dirt-cheap online. But they CAN be expensive to fix if something breaks, and they are heavy so things will wear faster than a Japanese tin-can, so I’ll provide some advice for those looking at buying a European car in general, and Audi specifically: SERVICE: Take the car to the dealer while it is under warranty. But once the warranty is over, stay away from the dealer. They are too expensive. Find “the local guy” for your make of car (there’s at least one, in nearly every place) where people lineup to get their car serviced. THIS APPLIES TO EVERY BRAND OF CAR! (not including exotics) AVOID: the 1990s to mid 2000s V6 engines due to the high cost of timing belt replacements. Avoid the V8 due to the high cost of everything!! The 4-cyl. turbo engines, and the later V6 with the timing chain are your preferred engine. (and any version of the TDI diesel is great too, but I’m in Canada, where those are rare). GET THE QUATTRO! That means that you get a “Real transmission” too. There are Front-wheel-drive A4 models with a CVT transmission. Most have no problem, but some fail, and they aren’t something you can fix in your back yard and will be expensive. Personally, I would avoid the CVT. (I’d go for a manual, but my wife wants an A/T even though she’s owned 5-speed cars too). Plus, you’ll get more $$$ at re-sale if the car has AWD. At least anywhere that gets snow, or has dirt roads. IF you buy a high-mileage car with Auto trans, go get the tranny fluid changed, just as a preventive maintenance thing. If you’re getting the engine oil changed, then the tranny fluid change is probably well under $100 and its cheap insurance. (I’ve done this with VW, Audi, Ford, Volvo, etc. cars. I’ve never had an A/T fail. I’m not sure it helps, but it makes me feel better knowing that my car’s transmission with 200,000 miles on it has new fluid) CHECK the FRONT SUSPENSION on A4, A6, A8 if over 150,000 miles. These are heavy cars. Like the BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-Class and S-class, the front suspension will wear faster than that of a Civic or Mazda 3 or even Golf, Jetta, A3, Beetle, etc. and the A4 and larger has (had) a “virtual link” front suspension with 4 control arms on each side, each with an inboard bushing and out-board ball-joint (yes, 8 ball-joints in the front, versus a typical American or Japanese car with 2). However, due to their popularity, there are many suppliers offering replacement parts. You don’t change the ball-joint and bushing, you just swap out the entire arm. Miele “10-piece kits” with 8 control arms and 2 tie-rods (the steering linkage) can be found online under US$500. Labour is a couple hours per side. So budget $1000 to replace the front suspension/steering components when you’re getting closer to 200,000 miles (320,000 kms). And that service requires a wheel alignment too. BTW: This is what a 2001 A6 Quattro Avant with 185,000 miles look like after spending $1k to replace the front suspension, plus $700 for an Eibach Sport Suspension kit (springs and shocks) and $520 for 17″ S6 wheels with Falken Ziex tires. My wife’s 2nd A6 in Regina Saskatchewan on our annual cross-Canada (Vancouver to Ontario) road-trip, which we completed in 2 days (cruise control @ 140 kmph across the prairies). Yes, I was stopped by the RCMP, but only once, and the constable spent over 10 minutes asking questions about the car before letting us go without a ticket :) CHECK THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE BEFORE BUYING. The used car lots around here have lots of Audis with around 115,000 to 120,000 kms. That’s when they are due for a timing belt ($1,500 for 4-cyl, but $3,500 for older V6), DSG fluid change, differential fluid change, radiator flush, brake-fluid flush …. around CAD$3,500 in service for the 4-cyl turbo engines! The owner sees that quotation from the service department, and says “how much is it worth as a trade-in?”. The cars get traded, and rather than do the expensive maintenance, the dealer sends them to the auction, and they land in a used-car dealership. But THE CAR NEEDING MAINTENANCE COULD BE THE BEST DEAL. If you do one thing: get the dealer to have the timing belt changed at a VW or Audi dealership, and include the receipt for the work (for warranty purposes) before you buy. Example: in 2016 I found a mint 1-owner 2006 (first year of new body, so looks “newer”) A4 2.0t Quattro Avant that’s NOT Silver on Black with all the power-memory-seats, front/rear heated seats, automatic lights and wipers, etc., but 117,000 kms. I got the VIN and checked Audi, and they had no record of the timing belt being changed (VW/Audi are on one database, so I can get a VIN for a car in Florida and check the service records for free at any Audi dealership in Canada for example … they will also print out wiring diagrams and stuff for you for free too, so you don’t need to buy manuals … important if you are importing US cars and need to modify lights to DRL). Similar cars were around $14k at other dealers. This dealer had dropped their asking price down to $12k. I bought the car for $10,500 with taxes IN, and the timing belt replaced by the VW dealer a few blocks away (the Passat and GTI had the same 2.0t engine). If I back out the taxes (12%) and $1,500 timing belt change (with new oil and filter) then the car cost me $7,875 … and now its good for another 117,000 kms. I did have to deal with the sludge. Online, VW owners in the US are spending US$1200 to have the dealer clean out the engine and install a new oil pickup. My German mechanic, Verner, (he was a BMW mechanic in Germany before immigrating to Canada) removed the oil-pan and cleaned everything out, cleaned the original oil pickup, re-installed with sealant to prevent leaks, filled it with the best synthetic oil, plus the optional Audi hi-volume oil filter for under CAD$650 including taxes. That fall, we drove the car to San Francisco, and then down the coast to San Luis Obispo just for a fun road-trip. It now has > 150,000 kms and has only had oil-changes and new tires. SUMMARY: Buying a 5 to 10 year old Audi, I get a car with 100,000 kms on it for 20% of the cost of a new one (an A4 Allroad with options like our A4 is CAD$55,000) including an investment in maintenance. Brakes are cheaper than Japanese cars and last longer. The exhaust systems will last 500,000 miles. You have to replace tires, wipers, and batteries regardless of the car, and the costs are pretty much the same. I would drive from Vancouver to Key West in this car with no hesitation (and I’ve driven that in the past, via Cape Breton Island going south, and via San Diego coming home). And I know that if I get in an accident, my chances of survival are much higher than in a common American or Japanese car. Meanwhile, I get to enjoy a superbly comfortable car with good handling, a good audio system, AWD for those rare days when we have snow, fantastic climate control, the insanely fast window defrosting typical of German (and also Volvo) cars for less than my friends buying a new Altima or Camry or Accord. Oil changes definitely cost more, but that applies to ALL turbo engines, including the new Hondas, etc. YES Audis are reliable. And they last a long time. If you don’t screw up on the maintenance.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the road noise in my VW Jetta Sportwagen? It is extremely loud. New tires are helping but it's still bad.

I suggest sitting in the car with windows up, and having someone blast a narrow stream of high-pressure water at each area of the car while you take note inside of the loudest noise penetration, then insulate THAT area. You have three challenges: stop making sound, block sound getting in, absorb sound you cant stop or can’t block. And it’s not just the sound you hear, it’s the sound you feel, as well, that is objectionable … all these things do one or more of these three: 1 - seal air gap openings with extra weatherstripping between opening body panels, nice, big, soft supplemental [ self-adhesive automotive weatherstripping ], such that all exposed seams are sealed … for example. making three separate seals for door panels ( VW already has two in many places ) with new additional seals where the outer edge of the door has a gap at the surface to the fender, this reduces wind noise and isolates the interior from the external noise, even noise from your own car. 2 - disassemble all interior panels, including and especially the roof liner, and fill the space with non-VOC volatile organic compound [ automotive sound deadening materials ], use the existing materials as examples of what to add, you will find loads of different materials already mounted behind everything, foam blocks, fiber pads, but still plenty of space left to fill. 3 - cover all hard interior surfaces with soft material such as [ self-adhesive padded vinyl ], [ Ultrasuede ], and [ EVA foam “foamtech” “foamiran” ] or equivalent in various thicknesses ( and coat it with [ Turtle Wax Inside Protectant with Scotchguard ] to male it appear more durable ). 4 - spray the underside of the car with [ rubberized undercoating ], again and again and again ( I added almost 50 pounds of spray undercoating to a VW Type 2 camper van over a period of sequential spray coating sessions, letting it set between sprays so nothing dripped, even in the thick places ). 5 - apply [ exhaust system heat and sound deadening wrap ] ( it will reduce under-hood and under-body temperatures, too ). 6 - Turn up the radio — I installed a [ Nakamichi ADS 2002 portable sound system ] ( ooo, that dates me ) that, even in a convertible ( Fiat Spyder ), overwhelmed any road noise — I could not even hear the complaints of people I passed by as they yelled from sidewalks and from other cars ( ! ) ... you could wear [ noise-cancelling headphones ], get a DMV permit based on a medical prescription first. 7 - apply [ security laminate film ] to your stationary windows, even custom forming with [ soft formable Lexan / Plexiglass ] on the interior surface ( incredible custom challenge, but can be done ), even consider modifying opening window system to allow extra thickness of additional interior lamination ( Mercedes has models with “twindow” ). 8 - remove all flooring and undercoat the inside of your car with non-VOC volatile organic compound non-out-gassing [ low VOC undercoating ], and [ sound-deadening pads ], consider [ cork sheets ], cork is lightweight, is many times more sound absorbent that other materials, and is also anti-microbial, apply [ low VOC rubberized carpet backing spray ] to the backs of your carpets, then replace your carpets, then cover your carpets with more carpet, then cover that with thick rubber mats under your feet ( NOT MacNeil WeatherTech echoey hard-plastic “liners” ) — and make extra sure that you lock down the driver’s carpet and mats so that nothing slides to push on the accelerator pedal. 9 - seal the engine compartment hood with [ self-adhesive automotive weatherstripping ] so that no sound escapes up and back from there, add [ thick underhood sound deadening pads ] inside of the hood, and fill the frame of the hood with [ flexible sound deadening acoustic foam-in-place spray ], and or cut up foam panels and push it into channel opening to fill all space in the hood structure. 10 - open the wheel wells inside the fenders and fill the space behind the shrouds with [ sound deadening foam and blocks ], then spray [ rubberized undercoating ] on both sides of the shrouds and replace them, then seal all overlaps and layers and seams and gaps with rubberized undercoating, building up sequential coats to bridge all gaps. 11 - get the [ smallest diameter and widest wheels for VW Sportwagen ] that will fit over your brakes ( as small as 15″ for some models of brakes, but as wide as 7″, 7.5″ or 8″ — the offset must match the original design of ET 45 to ET 54 or the car will handle poorly and unsafely and stress the tires and suspension ), then mount the [ tallest aspect ratio tires that will fit inside your fenders and carry the weight of the car ] ( I select tires with a 44 psi or more load rating, and weight capacity that can EACH tire carry at least 1/2 the weight of the entire car, you have to read the sidewall of each tire ), selecting tires for their quietness rating ( I prefer wet traction reviews ), then tune the tire pressures front and rear for safety and four-wheel drift with smooth and predictable breakaway, slightly favoring under-steer ( start with the manufacturer recommendations, 35 psi all around, then test, always keeping the rear equal or higher than the front, I have found that for 60 to 80 series tires, ~44 psi in the rear and ~36 psi in the front works for me, and for 50 to shorter aspect ratio tires I’ve found ~40 psi in the rear and ~32 psi in the front works for me, but it all depends on the tires and the sidewalls and the width of the wheels and so much more ). 12 - fill gaps between non-opening panels, such as seams between bumper and fender, between lamps and body, and so on, using [ tubes of Silicone / RTV ] which are available in many colors to match almost any car’s paint, and it fills and wipes smooth and is workable before drying to remove any overage, search under the car, too, with well-supported jacks, or with time on a lift if you can find a public garage. 13 - cover every non-glass surface and crevice with [ Sorbothane ], inside and out, for shock absorption, vibration isolation, and vibration damping ( I sit on a 1/8″ thick Sorbothane mat covered with a terry-towel under my butt ). Many of the above tasks may put your car out of usefulness for a full day or even longer while you disassemble, apply the remedy, and reassemble — it’s a lot of work, but not effective without a lot of work. Black straight women: do you feel pressured to overly nurture your male partners for the sake of the black race?

I am a black woman residing in Pacific Palisades, CA. My husband and I have been married for 17 years now. I find this question very interesting especially from a black woman’s perspective. Lord knows as black women we are always looked upon to empower black men but it’s rarely reciprocated. Black men on average do not protect black women. It’s sad but true. I was definitely thinking of my race because I didn’t want to date outside of my race. I wanted a black man and I wanted my children to be black. I tolerated more than I should have and I was on the brink of dating a white male I was attracted to but I stopped seeing him. I knew I could not see a future with a non black man. As a black woman you feel trapped because high quality black men are hard to find. I was tired of being in a relationship where I had the bigger balls, far bigger paycheck and greater aspiration. Then I get called the aggressive, arrogant, mean, masculine, educated black woman. Looking down on eligible, less educated black men. To hell with that. Step your game up or step aside. I am not spending my life catering to no weak black man that’s unworthy of support or nurturing. Prior to meeting my husband. I was accused by black men I dated of lacking a nurturing spirit. I guess not paying your cell phone bill, cable bill, buying you food, and clothing wasn’t very nurturing of me. Many were irresponsible and lacked the proper approach to maintaining steady employment. Losing job after job or struggling because he is financially irresponsible, trying to live beyond his means. Oh well! Too damn bad. I admit those were definitely bad choices in men and I accept accountability for my poor decision making. This has been a major complaint of black men for decades and quite frankly there is a limit to my nurturing. I believe a man must figure it out and make it happen. Some black men have been spoiled rotten by their grandmothers, sisters and mothers. Especially if he is the only male within the nuclear family. Their entire focus is around the male child. So for some black men, they expect similar nurturing from their girlfriend or wife. I am not his mother or grandmother. I hate weak men, constant complainers. My husband is the complete opposite. My husband is highly educated, successful, driven, persistent, and a resilient man. He is always looking for ways to improve and it shows in his professional life. His head is always in a book or he is going to some seminar. Right now he is reading some Ray Dalio book Principles. Go figure. I am his wife and it is my duty to make his life easier not harder or more stressful than necessary. Not spending my time picking his ego up off the floor due to his own poor decision making and judgment. He is the most responsible man I have ever known. Sometimes I just look at him and smile. Saying to myself “Ray Dalio.” Right now is more important than me sitting here? But that’s him. I’m watching Housewives of Atlanta and he is reading Ray damn Dalio. I say do you hubby. My husband was already a successful wealthy man when I met him. So In terms of his development, growth and other intangibles, he was already in possession of a very strong agency as a self made man. I must admit when I first met him I didn’t know he was wealthy. I met him in the lobby of a commercial building he owns. He was dressed in a t-shirt, hoodie, jeans and converse sneakers. I was dressed a business suit and he looked extremely clean but sorely underdressed for the environment. Yet everyone was greeting him like he was a celebrity. Men in suits clamoring to get his attention interrupting our conversation. I didn’t know what to think. I learned a valuable lesson that day because I was completely wrong. I learned to check my own inner-biases about black men due to their appearance. When he spoke to me and introduced himself I knew he was a bit different. However, besides being very attractive nothing about his attire indicated rich and wealthy. 17 years later he still wears the same kinds of hoodies, t-shirts, jeans and now sneakers from old navy. He never, ever wears suits except for weddings and funerals. Beyond that good luck because he goes to business meetings dressed in his usual attire! His eccentricities are attractive because he is humble and doesn’t like attention. He is extremely comfortable with himself in every way. He recently upgraded his car from a BMW he had for 15 years to a Audi A8. Now he could easily afford any kind of car he wants. He buys a 2017 Audi A8 with 11,200 miles on it. When I ask him why? He says because the car was a show car and it’s virtually a new car. He saved tens of thousands of dollars while getting all the bells and whistles. I’m certain he will have this car until 2035. Luckily I have my own tastes and my own car. I’ll drive the 2018 Grand Cherokee. We try to live as normal as possible because we don’t want the attention. I am really stunned after all these years how regular he is and how level headed he is. Most black men would buy the most expensive things brining unnecessary attention to themselves. I never loved any man more than I love him. He doesn’t need my nurturing because he already has it and he knows he has every cell in my body. I am extremely lucky to have my beautiful, humble husband. I never thought I would ever meet a black man like my husband. He is just a highly productive, loving, kind, husband and father. A man of integrity, morals and respect. He wasn’t looking an extension of his mother. He knows I am the wrong kind of woman for that. I will never tell him what he wants to hear. I know when to be a supportive wife and when to kick him in the ass. My husband is a leader and this rare among black men these days. I say this because nothing about him is non-committal. He is either in or out and he never makes commitments he cannot keep. I nurture our 2 children more than I nurture him. I have a wonderful career that I enjoy as a corporate attorney, but my husband is extremely supportive of me and he nurtures me with his empowerment and love. He doesn’t treat me the way other black men have in the past, trying to use my kindness as a weakness. I have a housekeeper and a nanny to help with the children. Why would I not be overly supportive of my black man. I definitely do not want to lose him and I take my wifely duties and vows extremely serious. For better or worse, in sickness and health. My husband is a unicorn not because of his great accomplishments, businesses, or his wealth but because of his attributes, characteristics, traits and qualities as a man. I’m commitment to him is forever and if he needs me to be overly nurturing then that’s what he will get. He is worthy of my all at all times.
