From the range and performance results of Audi's e-tron and Taycan, can we conclude that any existing car company will never catch up Tesla in the area of BEV? If not, who will be the first that break the current situation?

It isn’t just a question of catching up to Tesla on range and performance. Those are the easy challenges. The really hard ones are being overlooked by legacy car companies, and it means that a second wave of rude awakening awaits them. Tesla is changing the rule book on what it will take to be a successful auto maker in the coming decades. The notion that making an EV is simply a matter of replacing the IC engine and transmission with an electric motor and battery to attract customers away from Tesla is naive. The recent attempts to do so bear me out. Legacy car companies have been asleep at the wheel in so many ways, but particularly on innovation. Not just technological innovation, but production innovation, supply chain innovation, marketing and sales innovation, labor relations, and servicing. Almost every aspect of the automobile industry model is being turned upside down by Tesla to the detriment of the old school ways of traditional auto companies. Competency in software will be critical in the design of future automobiles. Cars of the future will be no less than mobile computer systems containing multiple millions of lines of code all designed to work seamlessly to control nearly every aspect of a car’s function. The current industry model of distributing software over dozens of individual microprocessors independently developed by outside component suppliers will never achieve high performance, reliable, and usable driver interfaces at competitive costs. Future vehicles will drive themselves to any destination without human supervision. They’ll charge themselves, park themselves, and hire themselves out as taxis. Only the most efficient, reliable, and lowest operating cost cars will succeed in eliminating the need to own a car at all. Anyone who thinks that converting 100 years of automotive hardware DNA evolution to software will be easy, has never attempted such a transition. Missteps will be fatal. Even hardware development presents a challenge to traditional car makers. Battery technology is key to achieving favorable price competition. Electric motor and electronics technology can make a huge difference in the efficiency of an EV. And how many auto companies are capable of designing their own special purpose chips for autonomous drive systems? Accelerated, continuous improvement development cycles will make it extremely difficult to keep pace with the leading companies. How cars are sold and serviced will be radically changed. The dealership sales and service model of car ownership will no longer be needed. On-line purchasing at fixed pricing is the wave of the future. Buying a car will be like buying something on Amazon. Don’t like it? Return it, no questions asked. It will no longer be acceptable for legacy auto companies to produce cars that require maintenance, have short life spans, and become obsolete one year after delivery. Over-the-air software updates, self diagnostics, automatic ordering of replacement parts, and come-to-you repair service will eliminate most trips to a service center. Not only do legacy auto makers face the challenge of catching up to Tesla, but they’ll have to keep up with Tesla, as well. I’m not optimistic. If anyone can, it will probably be some company you’ve never heard of. Even Tesla will one day become a little too comfortable and complacent. I think that will be awhile though.

Elon Musk said during an earnings call last week that the Model Y crossover will have 315 miles of range, which would handily beat the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-estimated ranges of just over 200 miles. By Gabrielle Coppola and Ed Ludlow Within minutes of the stock market’s open on Tuesday, shares of Tesla Inc. shot up 17%. Which feels extraordinary, except for the fact that they gained more the previous day -- 20% -- and also surged 10% one day last week and 7% and 10% the week before that. By the time the market closed, the stock had gained 112% this year, giving the electric-vehicle maker a market value greater than that of General Motors Co., Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Volkswagen AG combined. There is, not surprisingly, plenty of wonder and awe on Wall Street about the rally -- no other stock on the Nasdaq 100 is even up a quarter as much in 2020 -- but few concrete explanations as to what’s driving it. Theories abound, including many of the tried and true: It’s the result of CEO delivering record revenue and his fourth quarterly profit in six periods; or it’s a short squeeze; or it’s the opening of a key new factory in China; or it’s an extreme case of FOMO sweeping across the investor community. Or it’s a combination of all of the above. There is another school of thought emerging, though, that likely also helps explain the magnitude of the rally. The gist is that the long-held assumption that legacy automakers will catch up to Tesla in the electric-vehicle market is wrong. In fact, Musk may be adding to his lead, ensuring in the process that the company dominates one of the true growth markets in the world for years to come. “There’s a recognition that Tesla is in a preeminent position in terms of EV technology,” Peter Rawlinson, the chief executive officer of Lucid Motors Inc., said in an interview Monday at the BloombergNEF Summit in San Francisco. “They’re even further ahead than has been reported, and I think the gap is widening, not closing.” Tesla rose as much as 24% to $968.99 Tuesday before plunging suddenly in the last few minutes of trading, trimming share prices by more than $100 each, and bringing the stock’s one-day gain to 14%. Rawlinson’s praise echoed comments made recently by the CEO of Volkswagen, the world’s top-selling automaker. Tesla eclipsed the German manufacturing giant by market capitalization on Jan. 22. Not even two weeks later, its $159.9 billion value at Monday’s close exceeded VW’s by more than $66 billion. Cars will “become the most important mobile device,” VW’s Herbert Diess told top executives at an internal meeting last month. “If we see that, then we also understand why Tesla is so valuable from the view of analysts,” he added, lamenting that VW isn’t also looked at as tech-like. Mud Slinging Rawlinson, who was chief engineer of the Model S before joining Lucid in 2013, wasn’t always this positive, even going so far as to talk down his former employer’s product. “I contend that Tesla is not truly luxury,” he told Bloomberg News in September 2018, when Lucid had just secured a $1 billion investment and Musk was less than a month removed from trying and failing to take Tesla private. Rawlinson said then that Teslas were “premium and high-tech, but not luxury.” On Monday, he reiterated his view that the interiors of Tesla’s cars fall short. But since that earlier interview, Musk has built a commanding lead in the still-fledgling U.S. EV market, and the model 3 has risen to become one of the top-selling cars in Europe -- electric or otherwise. Tesla needed only a year to construct its first overseas assembly plant in China and last month started deliveries of locally built sedans. By March, it plans to begin handing over Model Ys to customers, months ahead of schedule. “We think they are pretty far ahead in battery and EV technology,” Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, said in an interview. “Tesla has moved from being seen as an auto stock to being seen as a tech stock” that is “mentioned in the same breath as Amazon, Apple and Google.” ‘Technological Gulf’ Global carmakers from VW to General Motors Co. are pouring billions into electric vehicles, trying to capture some of Tesla’s stock-market mojo while also meeting tighter emissions standards around the world. But the inferior battery range of recent EV entrants including Audi's e-tron crossover and Porsche's Taycan sports car show how far legacy automakers are lagging behind, Rawlinson said. “I’m not being critical of the Germans -- it’s wonderful they’re creating these cars and coming in,” he said. “But it just shows much of this technological gulf remains.” Lucid’s debut model, the all-electric Air sedan, is scheduled to start production in December, and the company hopes to deliver 15,000 units in the first year. Pre-production versions are exceeding 400 miles of range in testing, Rawlinson said. Traditional automakers are at a disadvantage when it comes to building battery-electric vehicles because they have to keep spending money and resources on combustion-engine cars, which influences how they think about vehicle design and battery-pack efficiency, Rawlinson said. Head Start Even automakers such as VW and GM, whose pockets are deep enough to invest in dedicated EV platforms, are behind because they don’t put a high enough priority on developing EV technology in-house, he said. Traditional manufacturers and even some EV startups “are saying the electric powertrain is already commodified, that it’s not a differentiator.” Lucid will announce a contract with a major cell maker soon, but battery chemistry is only part of the battle. Pack architecture, software and thermal management are just some of the elements necessary to achieve superior range, Rawlinson said. The company is beginning to seek funding for a new electric SUV based off the same platform as the Air. In the meantime, Gene Munster, a reliable Tesla bull, says that while it’s premature for the electric-car maker to be valued like Apple Inc., the comparison will gain credibility as long as Musk keeps increasing revenue. “The thesis for Tesla’s business miracle is rooted in the handful of years that the company operated with effectively no competition,” Munster, managing partner of the venture capital firm Loup Ventures and long-time Apple analyst, wrote Monday in a research note. “Tesla has nearly a decade head start in EVs as other automakers under-invested in the space.”

Do you see realistic competition for Tesla in BEVs?

Yes I do. I follow this very closely. There are many BEV already around other than Tesla that are good (but not as good as Tesla right now). That being said, Tesla’s may not be the best value even today. In terms of what is almost as good right now you have the Porsche Taycan, Audi E-Tron on the high end ($), then many Plug in Hybrids that are a great flexible alternative for people who mostly drive under 60 miles (battery range) but are able to tap the gas powered engine for anything more than that. These are the e-bmw line like the BMW 330e, X5e, Porsche Cayenne Electric etc. There are also cheaper electrics like the BMW i3, Fiat 500e, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt etc.. these don’t compare to Tesla, but are half the price! They are great for people who only drive 100–130 miles per day or less. Great city commuter cars. Good value. Where things get interesting are what is coming..soon! -Rivian (owned by Amazon and Ford) and starting production in the next month or so. -Ford Mach-E coming later this year. -BMW i4 next year and the electrification of all their models after that. -Volkswagen i.d.3 and more to come. -Ford F-150, Cadillac Escalade electric, and literally hundreds more. -A whole bunch of Asian manufactured electric vehicles like NIO and too many others to name that are already good and in production(NIO is often referred to as the Tesla of China). -A slew of new startups that have major dollars invested to be better than Tesla like Lucid motors or Faraday Motors, Byton motors, Iron horse motors, and Nikkola to name a few. Some of these will never take off,but many others will and have really cool concepts. in other words, while Tesla enjoys first mover advantage right now, the competition that is coming online soon is staggering. I have been in the automotive industry a long time and I can promise you that people enjoy having a vehicle that is different from the next guys’ and just like you don’t want to live in a house that looks the same as everyone else’s, people will not all want to drive a Tesla. Not with the vaste array of choices that will soon be available. Tesla will certainly be around for years to come, but they will have so many competitors, even with the “electrification” of cars trend, Tesla will struggle to retain even their current market share.

There are many factors at play in the pricing of electric vehicles these days. Supply chains, assembly lines, R&D can all play some part in the MSRP of an electric vehicle before its first sale. Probably the most notable factor today is the cost of batteries. Battery packs are vital to the longevity and performance of any electric vehicle, but they are expensive. Developments in battery technology as well as swapping practices have significantly helped lower the cost of EVs in recent years. However, current battery components are gathered and produced by a select group of manufacturers, like in China for instance. The price of importing multiple resources and parts from overseas, adds to the overall price an automaker must charge consumers to make a profit. Another huge factor is the overall luxury and performance of an EV. Like traditional ICE vehicles, you can purchase something to get you to the grocery store and back, for much less money than a vehicle with power plus all the bells and whistles. The vehicles mentioned below come with plenty of pricey features, even at their most standard models. Most expensive electric vehicles currently available First, we will start with the electric vehicles you can go out and… more fittingly, log on and buy right now. Depending on what country you live in of course. To be clear, this list is the most expensive consumer EVs today. There are plenty of electric supercars out there that cost much more, but they’re not exactly prevalent on roads and highways. This list is a bit more realistic and we will follow up with those exotics in another post. To help build vital anticipation, we will start with the most affordable of the most expensive options, and ascend upward from there. Keep in mind that the prices provided are the MSRPs and do not include any state or federal incentives, upgrades, or customizations unless specifically noted. All prices are accurate at the time of posting, and we will update them as they change. Prices also do not include additional fees for destination and documentation. Tesla Model Y Performance What would a top EV countdown be without a Tesla mention, right? With overdue refreshes to Tesla’s veteran Model S and Model X underway, the Model Y is currently the automaker’s most expensive option available right now. That being said, the Model Y still remains quite affordable compared to the acts to follow below. Tesla’s newest EV began deliveries nearly a year ago and has already seen impressive worldwide sales. The dual-motor Performance trim, which prioritizes speed and acceleration over range, currently starts at a purchase price of $60,990. This does not include any add-ons such as exterior color, interior trim, or full self-driving (FSD) capabilities. Jaguar I-Pace HSE Next is legacy automaker Jaguar’s all-electric offering in the I-Pace SUV. The High-Standard Equipment or HSE trim of the I-Pace offers additional driver assistance. This includes blind spot assist, 360-degree cameras, and high-speed emergency braking. That is also why it costs $11,000 more than the standard I-Pace and makes our list one of the priciest out there right now. The Jaguar I-Pace HSE starts at $80,900 and can go higher as you customize it with features like leather interiors and cold climate packs. NIO ES8 Signature Edition For our third exorbitant vehicle on the list, we venture overseas to the surging EV market in China. NIO has quickly used its quality vehicles and battery swapping technology to earn the title of the “Tesla of China.” The fact that Tesla also competes in the Chinese market technically makes it the Tesla of China, but that’s beside the point! The automaker has seen its ups and downs since a public offering in the NYSE in 2018. However, it has persevered and established itself as a major electric force in China looking to expand globally in the coming years. NIO currently offers three electric SUVs and recently announced an impressive ET7 sedan. We’re not here to chat about that though. Our focus is on the Signature Edition version of NIO’s ES8 SUV. This EV costs ¥566,000 (~$87,600) with the six-seat interior selected. For perspective, that’s ¥196,000 (~$30,000) more than what the Tesla Model Y performance is selling for in China. Porsche Taycan Turbo S Topping our list of the most expensive EVs currently available is the Turbo S version of Porsche’s Taycan. The internationally known sports car manufacturer has presented the Taycan as its first all-electric offering. So far the hype has been immense. After originally presenting the higher-end Taycan trims, customers can now purchase their own electric Porsche for only $80,000! If you have more money from all that bitcoin you’ve been squirreling away, then the Taycan Turbo S might be what you’re looking for. That is if you’re looking for one of the most expensive EVs on the planet right now. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S starts an MSRP of $185,000. Yes, that’s $105,000 more than that boring, standard Taycan we just bragged about. Most expensive electric vehicles coming soon Now that we’ve knocked out a few of the vehicles you can order right from the very smart device you’re currently on, let’s focus on what’s to come. 2021 shines like a beacon of hope after a tumultuous year prior, and that is no different for EVs. Below is a list of some of the most expensive electric vehicles currently scheduled to hit roads this year. Many of the automakers below have multiple vehicle offerings, or at the very least trim alternatives also debuting in 2021. However, to save space and let you get on with your day, we have selected a few of the pricier options for you to peruse and begin saving for. To see all the MSRPs for each model, we have compiled a table for you at the bottom. Rivian R1S Launch Edition Rivian is one of the EV manufacturers with a lot to gain in 2021. Backed by Ford Motors and Amazon, Rivian looks to make a major dent in the electric SUV space, specifically for the outdoorsy consumer. Its first two flagships EVs are scheduled to begin delivering this summer, starting with the R1T pickup in June. The seven-seat R1S SUV is set for August, and its Launch Edition trim starts at a purchase price of $77,500. We are focusing on the R1S over the R1T simply because its starting price for the Launch Edition is $2,500 more. Regardless of Launch Edition price or Rivian model, those trims are already fully reserved. Other trims are scheduled to deliver in 2022. In the meantime, Rivian looks to expand in the United States in retail and eventually establish a $50 billion IPO later this year. Tesla Model S Plaid+ Again, what would an electric vehicle list be without a shoutout to Tesla? There are multiple spots Tesla vehicles could fit on this list, but we’re talking most expensive this time. That means we have to mention the most expensive Tesla to date, the Model S Plaid+. After teasing Tesla acolytes for months, the automaker finally debuted the much anticipated Plaid powertrain last fall. Plaid’s initial numbers (both performance and price) were quite astonishing. With the aforementioned refresh to the Model S, the Plaid powertrain has now been split into Model S Plaid and Plaid+. The top speed and acceleration of this tri-motor trim remain the same. However, the Plaid+ promises a mile range of 520+ miles on a single charge. That is compared to the 390-mile range on the standard Plaid. While the Plaid is scheduled to deliver in August or September at a price of $119,990, the Plaid+ will be a longer wait… and a larger hit to your wallet. According to Tesla’s website, the Model S Plaid+ will start at a purchase price of $149,990 and does not include any customizations, add-ons, or FSD capabilities. This trim was originally listed as late 2021 for a delivery date but has now been pushed to mid-2022. Audi RS e-Tron GT Despite a global pandemic’s efforts to hamper the automobile market, Audi found success in 2020 with its e-Tron SUV. While the e-Tron itself does not make our list of the most expensive electric vehicles, the freshly announced Audi e-Tron GT certainly does. Audi first unveiled the e-Tron GT concept a few years ago, but only recently debuted the performance sedan to the world… at least officially. In addition to the e-Tron GT, Audi will also be delivering the even quicker RS e-Tron GT. This is the electric vehicle chosen for our list of most expensive. That’s because it starts at a price of $139,900. Both versions of the e-Tron GT are expected to hit dealerships in the U.S. this summer. Lucid Motors Air Dream Edition Last and actually most, is Lucid Motors’ upcoming Air sedan. Lucid first made major waves in the EV world with its Air prototype challenging Tesla’s Model S Plaid on the track. The American automaker now looks to deliver its first EV, the Air sedan in 2021. The first trim available also happens to be its most expensive – the Air Dream Edition. Lucid Motors’ debut EV will enter the market at a whopping $169,000 before any incentives, or add-ons. The Air Dream Edition was currently slated to deliver this spring followed by two, less expensive Air trims in 2021. There is also a standard version of the Air called Pure scheduled to debut in 2022. Now, Lucid has pushed the Dream Edition delivery to the second half of 2021. You may be able to experience a Lucid Studio soon to get a closer look too. The automaker is looking to expand its retail presence in the U.S. before the Air starts delivering.
