Will Tesla eventually overtake traditional auto manufacturers?

Thanks for the A2A. Electric does seem to be the future, and Tesla is leagues ahead of the traditional car makers in this space. Their technology is vastly underrated. When it comes to electric cars, batteries, motors, charging, and technology all play a significant role in EV market success. Batteries Batteries are the core of electric cars, so this is where it can be make or break for prospective electric car companies. When it comes to batteries, no one comes even remotely close to the sheer scale of Tesla’s battery manufacturing. Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, despite being just 30% complete, already produces almost more Lithium-ion battery cells than the rest of the world COMBINED. That’s right, Gigafactory 1 produces almost 50 Gigawatt hours of these batteries per year. Not only do they produce the MOST batteries per year, but they produce the BEST batteries as well! Tesla’s are of the highest technological standards today. While this is astonishing enough, Tesla still plans on building TWO MORE Gigafactories in the near future. There is one in Shanghai being built as we speak, it’s completion date being later this year. Tesla also plans to build another Gigafactory in Europe as well. With these 3 factories up and running, I find it hard to believe traditional car companies like Volkswagen catching up to Tesla. Motors Motors also play a very important role in electric cars, and again Tesla is far ahead. Their motors are the most efficient, powerful, lightest, and cheapest. Yes, all of the above is true, here is just a snippet of what experts have said on the Model 3 motor. “Another innovation that impressed the teardown team was how advanced the inverter/convertor device was that provides power to the motor, particularly in the use of silicon carbide on the devices’ integrated circuits. “It creates a lot less heat and is a lot faster than the Chevy and BMW,” Ellis added to the discussion. “Silicon carbide is the latest and greatest and Tesla so far is the only vehicle out there with it.” Munro and Ellis further noted the high level of tech Tesla’s motor contained, all while being considerably smaller than the competition. The study will be released in a few weeks and also includes detailed information about the motors inside the Chevy Bolt, BMW i3, and Jaguar I-Pace. Munro had very positive things to say about Tesla’s technology, but the electric vehicles produced by industry giants did not receive quite the same accolades. “It looks like the other guys just went around and glued together whatever they could find off the shelf,” Munro jabbed at Tesla’s competition.” These are the words of Sandy Munro, a man with 30 years of experience in designing, building and processing components in automobiles, not mine. Range, Charging, and Infrastructure Next comes charging. Electric cars are limited greatly by their range and charging speeds. Tesla AGAIN comes out on top here. Their cars have more range than basically every other EV on the market. The Long Range Model 3 can go 325 miles on a charge, while the highest capacity Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt can only go 226 miles and 238 miles, respectively. This is a 30% lower range than the Model 3, a significant margin indeed. When it comes to the Model S, there is really no level EV competitor to compare it to. The only significant non-SUV EV’s are the 2 aforementioned plus the BMW i3 and Volkswagen e-Golf. The Model X does have 2 competitors, the Jaguar i-Pace and the Audi E-Tron. The Model X outdoes the Jaguar and Audi in range as well, besting it 325 miles versus 234 miles and 204 miles, respectively. This gap is extremely significant, as the Model X is much larger than the 2 other cars. What is also disappointing is the range of the so called “ Model X killer “ E-Tron. How does it only have 204 miles of range? This pales in comparison to the Model X, a significant drawback indeed. It is also important to note the efficiencies of the batteries here. The Jaguar and Audi have capacities of 90kWh and 95kWh, respectively. The Model X has a 100kWh capacity. They are all within 5–10% of each other in terms of battery capacity, why does the Tesla Model X have 30–35% more range WHILE being the larger vehicle? This has to do with the superior battery and powertrain technology that Tesla is known to have. It is clear that the traditional car companies are significantly behind in the technology here, and the numbers show it. Here is a graph that shows battery capacity versus range. The Tesla’s make FAR better use of very similar battery capacity versus its current competitors. Here is a graph of the battery consumption at an average speed of 120 km/h. The Jaguar and Audi are FAR behind the Tesla. Next comes charging infrastructure. The great thing with EV’s is that for the great majority of the time, you never have to charge anywhere other than your home or work. You wake up with a full “ tank “ of juice, which should be more than enough for your daily commute. For longer trips, however, things get tricky. EV’s do not have the battery technology to charge in 5 minutes like you would similarly with an Internal Combustion Engine vehicle at a gas station. For trips like these, you need charging stations that are both FAST and COMMON. As you can probably guess, Tesla again is ahead of the competition. Tesla’s network of superchargers is by far the most intricate and largest in the United States. Here is the closest competitor, Electrify America, with it’s 900 charging stations. As you can see, Tesla is still ahead. There are now over 1,400 Tesla supercharger stations in America. They are all strategically located off of major highways at the optimal distance from each other to allow EV access to where ever you please to visit. It doesn’t end there though. In addition to having the most charging stations, Tesla superchargers, more importantly, are also the FASTEST available EV chargers at the moment. They charge at a max rate of 120kW. To put this into perspective, all a Tesla owner needs, the majority of the time, is a 30 minute charge to continue on their trip with enough range. This is not the case for other EV owners. The Leaf, Bolt, i3, I-Pace, and E-tron cannot charge at the 350kWh speeds that their charging stations offer as their battery technology cannot handle those speeds. Furthermore, Tesla has just announced v3 superchargers that can charge all Model 3’s and new Model S and X’s at 170kWh. This again pulls Tesla ahead of the competition, making it harder for the traditional car companies to catch up as they simply don’t have the battery technology just yet. Here is a graph that better displays the information regarding charging speeds. As you can see, the Teslas have the most range and fastest charging speeds compared to the competition. We aren’t done yet. Tesla just announced that they will be putting the new batteries and motors of the Model 3 into the new Model S’s and X’s. The Model 3 contained Tesla’s most technologically advanced batteries and motors, and they are now present in the newest Model S’ and X’s. These battery packs are capable of charging at 170kWh on the new v3 superchargers. It is true that the EV market at this current moment is underdeveloped and needs time before true competition starts, so let’s talk about technology and safety overall, encompassing ALL current vehicles. Technology It is no secret that Tesla makes technologically driven cars. A simple way to explain a Tesla is to think of it as a smartphone on wheels. It responds to all of your commands, receives software updates regularly, evolves with time and changing needs, and is extremely user intuitive. The center screen controls EVERYTHING in the car. Many people prefer buttons, and that’s perfectly fine, but the software configurability of a central screen like this is something hard to pass on. It’s basically a top of the line iPad slammed onto the dash. Everything is easy to use, exactly where it needs to be, and configurable. The left portion of the screen is an overhead view of the car showing all nearby object, speed, and range information. The right side is all Google Maps, arguably the best navigation system available today. The bottom contains all quick access climate control buttons. The screen is massive, completely lag free, and of the highest resolution of any screen in any car today. No other car company at this moment offers this level of technology. Now to the software, oh boy. Teslas wouldn’t be Teslas if it weren’t for the software configurability. Everything in the car can be readily improved via over the air free software updates. This is very under appreciated by the car industry. Imagine waking up, getting into your car to get to work, and seeing that your car now can automatically change lanes on highways and recognize red lights? What about being able to summon the car to your location in a parking lot? A security system utilizing 4 cameras that records suspicious movement/damage near and to your car? Improved braking distances and a 5% increase to peak power and range? The list goes on and on, showing the capabilities of having a car built around a software centered design. No other car manufacturer today has this level of software configurability in their GAS powered cars, forget trying to make an ELECTRIC VEHICLE from SCRATCH and trying to match this level of technology. It just isn’t possible. By the time some companies DO get to this point, Tesla will be 4 steps ahead of them. I think this analogy works well to describe what Tesla has done to the car industry. This Is to that What This Did to that I personally don’t look at it as Tesla overtaking other companies, but rather other companies trying to catch up and contest Tesla. Electric vehicles are the future, and having this sort of lead is simply HUGE. Tesla will stay at the top of the EV game for a long time until other car companies can produce EV’s that have comparable technology and infrastructure. Thanks, Liam Johnson

Shortened supply chains, making parts in-house, and advanced battery technologies have significantly helped manufacturers lower the costs of their electric vehicles. Consumers may soon see multiple EVs for sale under $30,000, which is exciting. But let’s forget about all of that promise right now, and visit the other end of the spectrum. What are some of the most expensive electric vehicles you can buy? Below is a list of what’s currently out there, and what EVs will soon be available for big bucks. Why are electric vehicles so expensive? We can chat all day about this topic, but that might be better suited for its own post. There are many factors at play in the pricing of electric vehicles these days. Supply chains, assembly lines, R&D can all play some part in the MSRP of an electric vehicle before its first sale. Probably the most notable factor today is the cost of batteries. Battery packs are vital to the longevity and performance of any electric vehicle, but they are expensive. Developments in battery technology as well as swapping practices have significantly helped lower the cost of EVs in recent years. However, current battery components are gathered and produced by a select group of manufacturers, like in China for instance. The price of importing multiple resources and parts from overseas, adds to the overall price an automaker must charge consumers to make a profit. Another huge factor is the overall luxury and performance of an EV. Like traditional ICE vehicles, you can purchase something to get you to the grocery store and back, for much less money than a vehicle with power plus all the bells and whistles. The vehicles mentioned below come with plenty of pricey features, even at their most standard models. Most expensive electric vehicles currently available First, we will start with the electric vehicles you can go out and… more fittingly, log on and buy right now. Depending on what country you live in of course. To be clear, this list is the most expensive consumer EVs today. There are plenty of electric supercars out there that cost much more, but they’re not exactly prevalent on roads and highways. This list is a bit more realistic and we will follow up with those exotics in another post. To help build vital anticipation, we will start with the most affordable of the most expensive options, and ascend upward from there. Keep in mind that the prices provided are the MSRPs and do not include any state or federal incentives, upgrades, or customizations unless specifically noted. All prices are accurate at the time of posting, and we will update them as they change. Prices also do not include additional fees for destination and documentation. Tesla Model Y Performance What would a top EV countdown be without a Tesla mention, right? With overdue refreshes to Tesla’s veteran Model S and Model X underway, the Model Y is currently the automaker’s most expensive option available right now. That being said, the Model Y still remains quite affordable compared to the acts to follow below. Tesla’s newest EV began deliveries nearly a year ago and has already seen impressive worldwide sales. The dual-motor Performance trim, which prioritizes speed and acceleration over range, currently starts at a purchase price of $60,990. This does not include any add-ons such as exterior color, interior trim, or full self-driving (FSD) capabilities. Jaguar I-Pace HSE Next is legacy automaker Jaguar’s all-electric offering in the I-Pace SUV. The High-Standard Equipment or HSE trim of the I-Pace offers additional driver assistance. This includes blind spot assist, 360-degree cameras, and high-speed emergency braking. That is also why it costs $11,000 more than the standard I-Pace and makes our list one of the priciest out there right now. The Jaguar I-Pace HSE starts at $80,900 and can go higher as you customize it with features like leather interiors and cold climate packs. NIO ES8 Signature Edition For our third exorbitant vehicle on the list, we venture overseas to the surging EV market in China. NIO has quickly used its quality vehicles and battery swapping technology to earn the title of the “Tesla of China.” The fact that Tesla also competes in the Chinese market technically makes it the Tesla of China, but that’s beside the point! The automaker has seen its ups and downs since a public offering in the NYSE in 2018. However, it has persevered and established itself as a major electric force in China looking to expand globally in the coming years. NIO currently offers three electric SUVs and recently announced an impressive ET7 sedan. We’re not here to chat about that though. Our focus is on the Signature Edition version of NIO’s ES8 SUV. This EV costs ¥566,000 (~$87,600) with the six-seat interior selected. For perspective, that’s ¥196,000 (~$30,000) more than what the Tesla Model Y performance is selling for in China. Porsche Taycan Turbo S Topping our list of the most expensive EVs currently available is the Turbo S version of Porsche’s Taycan. The internationally known sports car manufacturer has presented the Taycan as its first all-electric offering. So far the hype has been immense. After originally presenting the higher-end Taycan trims, customers can now purchase their own electric Porsche for only $80,000! If you have more money from all that bitcoin you’ve been squirreling away, then the Taycan Turbo S might be what you’re looking for. That is if you’re looking for one of the most expensive EVs on the planet right now. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S starts an MSRP of $185,000. Yes, that’s $105,000 more than that boring, standard Taycan we just bragged about. Below is a list of some of the most expensive electric vehicles currently scheduled to hit roads this year. Many of the automakers below have multiple vehicle offerings, or at the very least trim alternatives also debuting in 2021. However, to save space and let you get on with your day, we have selected a few of the pricier options for you to peruse and begin saving for. To see all the MSRPs for each model, we have compiled a table for you at the bottom. Rivian R1S Launch Edition Rivian is one of the EV manufacturers with a lot to gain in 2021. Backed by Ford Motors and Amazon, Rivian looks to make a major dent in the electric SUV space, specifically for the outdoorsy consumer. Its first two flagships EVs are scheduled to begin delivering this summer, starting with the R1T pickup in June. The seven-seat R1S SUV is set for August, and its Launch Edition trim starts at a purchase price of $77,500. We are focusing on the R1S over the R1T simply because its starting price for the Launch Edition is $2,500 more. Regardless of Launch Edition price or Rivian model, those trims are already fully reserved. Other trims are scheduled to deliver in 2022. In the meantime, Rivian looks to expand in the United States in retail and eventually establish a $50 billion IPO later this year. Tesla Model S Plaid+ Again, what would an electric vehicle list be without a shoutout to Tesla? There are multiple spots Tesla vehicles could fit on this list, but we’re talking most expensive this time. That means we have to mention the most expensive Tesla to date, the Model S Plaid+. After teasing Tesla acolytes for months, the automaker finally debuted the much anticipated Plaid powertrain last fall. Plaid’s initial numbers (both performance and price) were quite astonishing. With the aforementioned refresh to the Model S, the Plaid powertrain has now been split into Model S Plaid and Plaid+. The top speed and acceleration of this tri-motor trim remain the same. However, the Plaid+ promises a mile range of 520+ miles on a single charge. That is compared to the 390-mile range on the standard Plaid. While the Plaid is scheduled to deliver in August or September at a price of $119,990, the Plaid+ will be a longer wait… and a larger hit to your wallet. According to Tesla’s website, the Model S Plaid+ will start at a purchase price of $149,990 and does not include any customizations, add-ons, or FSD capabilities. This trim was originally listed as late 2021 for a delivery date but has now been pushed to mid-2022. Audi RS e-Tron GT Despite a global pandemic’s efforts to hamper the automobile market, Audi found success in 2020 with its e-Tron SUV. While the e-Tron itself does not make our list of the most expensive electric vehicles, the freshly announced Audi e-Tron GT certainly does. Audi first unveiled the e-Tron GT concept a few years ago, but only recently debuted the performance sedan to the world… at least officially. In addition to the e-Tron GT, Audi will also be delivering the even quicker RS e-Tron GT. This is the electric vehicle chosen for our list of most expensive. That’s because it starts at a price of $139,900. Both versions of the e-Tron GT are expected to hit dealerships in the U.S. this summer. Lucid Motors Air Dream Edition Last and actually most, is Lucid Motors’ upcoming Air sedan. Lucid first made major waves in the EV world with its Air prototype challenging Tesla’s Model S Plaid on the track. The American automaker now looks to deliver its first EV, the Air sedan in 2021. The first trim available also happens to be its most expensive – the Air Dream Edition. Lucid Motors’ debut EV will enter the market at a whopping $169,000 before any incentives, or add-ons. The Air Dream Edition was currently slated to deliver this spring followed by two, less expensive Air trims in 2021. There is also a standard version of the Air called Pure scheduled to debut in 2022. Now, Lucid has pushed the Dream Edition delivery to the second half of 2021. You may be able to experience a Lucid Studio soon to get a closer look too. The automaker is looking to expand its retail presence in the U.S. before the Air starts delivering. Surely, then you must be aware of the fact that it is not exactly taboo to flash your riches in Punjab, whether it be the Pakistani or the Indian part? Sikhs do it, Muslims do it, Hindus do it. When the first Pakistani guest workers arrived in Norway around 1970, they “all” came from the Lahore region. Lahore, the home of Lollywood, the richest city in Pakistan, the center of Pakistani science, technology, art and culture? But “our” Pakistanis were neither rich nor city folks. They came to find work and support their low-income families back home. Few had any education, some none at all. The first generation wore cheap tweed jackets, worked their asses off in cleaning, warehouses, factories, transport, junk food - it was actually the small Pakistani-owned chain of Malik’s which introduced the modern hamburger to Norway, which until then had been a flat, large meatball (karbonade) in a bun w/mustard and tomato ketchup, maybe added a sallad leaf for colour. The jumble sale/discount clothes signalled: “We are sending all the money we can back to our families in Pakistan.” They lived cheaply, often 4–6 guys in one small apartment, and they were hardly ever seen in the streets after work. They were not intending to stay. But, after some time, they discovered that they actually liked living in Norway. Wages were good, you could start your own business without having to bribe someone, great higher education was available for your children, health services were cheap and welfare generous, and if you had a steady job, you could buy yourself a rather spacious family apartment. So from 1975 family reunification became very popular. I have many Norwegian-Pakistani friends, and they may not like to hear it, but if you ask me, there is no demographic group in Norway more obsessed with social status than the Pakistani community. However, it is not really directed at Norwegian society as a whole. Quite the contrary. Norwegian-Pakistanis flash their riches to each other. Pakistan is a class society into the extreme. Social hierarchies are rigid. Compared to the great number of Pakistani poor, the rich of Pakistan can easily be compared to the English aristocracy when it comes to lifestyle. But while the English aristocracy’s social, cultural and political power has been reasonably gelded over time in England, the rich of Pakistan are also the powerful. It has been said that 22 families own most of the country. After the first generation of Pakistanis settled in Norway, as soon as they had children, they cast their eyes on education. I swear to you, there was a time in the 1980s, when every single Pakistani taxi driver “accidentially” told me while driving me somewhere, that his son was (btw!) studying law or medicine - beaming with pride. They couldn’t help themselves! Back home in Lahore, grandpa (baba) would start on a tour of his neighbours or call them to notify them that his grandson was becoming a doctor, a solicitor, a dentist! Celebrations were held, sweets were served. And yes, the car. Let’s not forget the car. Now, of course, Lahore is a well developed city, and there are thousands upon thousands of cars driving the streets there. But for a Norwegian-Pakistani who came from the poor countryside in the 1970s, owning your own car was completely out of reach. What was the greatest status symbol in the West in the 50s–70s? The car. Elvis Presley, James Dean, right? What greater social divide ever existed in the US than between, one the one hand, the rich kid whose dad bought him a sports car for his 18th birthday, and, on the other, the kid who still had to take the bus to work or school, or let mum or dad drive him there? Now, 1st generation Norwegian-Pakistani dad will most likely drive a moderately priced family Ford or a sturdy Volvo. But, hey, young 2nd generation son will want a Beemer or an Audi. “Relax, dad. When I become a doctor, I can afford a car like that. I will make twice of what you make as a subway train driver.” The frugal and hard-working dad may not like it, but he might indeed slip to baba in his next phone call home to Lahore, the fact that his son is actually driving an Audi A3 SportsBack E-tron Sport Business, whereupon the entire village will know it in days, and all will be very proud of their kin. Dad may shake his head and ask what’s wrong with a decent discount tweed suit, which he himself still wears (even with elbow patches), but young soon-to-be-a-stockbroker will want his Armani - and a nice watch. While studying, the young sons usually live at home. They work hard and study diligently, even overtime, some do indeed excel. They don’t drink, and not all of them smoke hashish, and not too excessive, anyway. Some of them also work part-time while studying. To lease a nice car in Norway is not all that expensive. 500 USD/month will do it. Two nights a week behind the counter of a 7-11 will cover it. Or a government student loan. If you have a brother or a friend who will share the monthly bill with you, all the better. The Norwegian-Pakistani gangsters were also fond of cars, but the police started impounding their Porches and Beemers. If you had a police record and drove a fancy car, the police would stop you on sight and ask how you were able to afford a 100 000 USD car while living on welfare. So the gangsta wheels period of the Norwegian underworld became fairly short-lived. No more hubcaps. Now, of course, not all Pakistanis are identical, neither are they a monolitic Norwegian social group. It takes all sorts. The 1st generation father of a Pakistani friend of mine loves his huge, slick Chevrolet AMCAR, and some young Pakistanis prefer to ride a bike or take the subway. Some, I’m sure, are environmentally concerned and simply don’t like cars. Others hang mostly with ethnic Norwegians, being more or less secular and “Norwegian” in life-style, and in the capital, few people aged 20–30 y o have a car, especially if they live in the inner city. But among the up-and-coming, especially if they come from families which still adhere mostly or to a large degree to Pakistani, not Norwegian customs and traditions, a nice car is a must. Besides, many girls are impressed by cars, right? In general, Pakistanis in Norway marry Pakistanis. If you for religious reasons don’t like going to clubs where alcohol is served, a nice car is a good alternative for a date with your prospective wife. Drive somewhere, have an icecream, maybe see a movie, stroll a bit in a park, kick some autumn leaves… Prospective father-in-law will appreciate it, including the car. “He’s going to be a real estate agent, daddy,” says the girl. “Look at his car. I will have a good life with him.” Pakistani dad sure don’t want no welfare client to marry his dear soon-to-be-a-pharmacist daughter. Is Tesla the best option for an electric car or should I wait for more choices from different car manufacturers? I understand this question as “will in near future a competitor offer more bang for the buck”? And the answer is - no. Note: the answer was written in April 2019. Read the update at the end. Currently the Tesla Model 3 is the market leader. Soon it will be accompanied by the Model Y. If you are looking Hyundai (Kona), Kia (e-Niro), Nissan (Leaf 2.0 and Leaf 2.0 Plus) or Chevrolet (Bolt), for the same money they offer less. The first two also have delivery problems. Audi e-Tron and Jaguar i-Pace need rapid chargers that are capable to charge with a speed of at least 100 kW, the e-Tron can make usage of 175 kW - chargers which are currently still very uncommon. Once installed, they will quite likely offer electricity at a higher price than Tesla. Porsche Cayman will be able to use 350 kW chargers, but Porsche didn’t demonstrate a single charging session (update: it can charge at up to 270 kW, but only for a few minutes). Tesla recently introduced the Supercharger V3 which enables to use 250 kW and that one will be rolled out across the USA in 2019 (late 2019 also in Europe). Jaguar i-Pace, Audi e-Tron and Mercedes Benz EQC may offer more luxurious interiors, but they offer a far inferior long range capability. Model S and X are still champions in their class. Let’s not forget - all competitors mentioned before are more “thirsty” than Teslas. Focusing more on design than performance almost all of them need 15 –30% more energy than comparing Teslas. Very soon Tesla will update the Model S P100DL (now called Ludicrous Performance) which puts the Taycan in the bag in performance, it should charge in about the same time after the upgrade - while still probably being significantly cheaper. I like the Taycan styling too, but I would really want to know if you would be willing to pay a 20% premium just because of the styling. And Tesla Roadster 2, where the styling is just a matter of personal taste will wipe away with any competition. VW will come with a I.D. / NEO which should supposedly be a cheaper platform, but it will probably offer less and actually compete with cars that even today are not on par in technology (Nissan Leaf 2.0 40 kWh, Hyundai Kona 39 kWh). With batteries that will offer the same range as the current standard (60 kWh and above) I highly doubt that they will be competitive to Tesla Model 3 and Model Y in price. So in essence, I don’t see any competition coming which would be a better choice in the foreseeable future. Not 2019, not 2020 and quite likely not in 2021 either. Update, February 2021 This answer was written in April 2019. Now we have 2021 and yes, there are several alternatives, already available or expected at some moment in 2021. Tesla Model 3 Tesla Model Y Tesla Model S Tesla Model X Audi e-tron BMW iX3 Mercedes EQC Polestar 2 and its cousin Volvo XC40 Volkswagen ID.4 and (on the same platform) Skoda Enyaq Ford Mustang Mach-E Nissan Ariya Hyundai IONIQ 5 Most of them are coming in different battery sizes and a standard (or optional) 4WD. Not to mention some smaller EVs: Volkswagen ID.3 (in 3 battery sizes), the “triplets” (same technology, but different design) Peugeot e-208 / Peugeot e-2008 SUV / Opel Corsa-e , the still decent, albeit slightly dated (for their class) Korean triplets Hyundai Kona Electric , Kia e-Soul and Kia e-Niro and the updated Hyundai IONIQ Electric , BMW i3 and Renault Zoe ZE50 , commuters and cars for short road trips. I don’t mention city cars since they are in a totally different league. You can look them up in the EV Database . Everybody has to decide where he will want to drive since Tesla still has a significant advantage when it comes to road trips. Supercharger | Tesla is far better than Electrify America or IONITY EU , not to mention that Teslas can use the competing charging network (if needed) either directly or with an adapter (in USA) - it doesn’t work vice versa since other manufacturers refuse to pay a fee to Tesla. Another point is software and online software updates (which only some competitors offer) and the Autopilot, which may not be at Tesla’s level. Tesla is also still leading in efficiency, generally also in range and in most cases also in charging speed (added range in 15–20 minutes). But yes, alternatives are here. Some good, other only decent, but yes, now customers have choices, especially if they are willing to get into Tesla’s price range. Back in 2019, there were (almost) none. Electric cars are already a mainstay on the roads, with a growing number of all-electric models being available to buy right now . The electric effect is now in full force, with established brands committing to offering a wider range of pure electric cars in the future, while those who depend heavily on diesel are seeing sales falter - with a deadline of 2035 in regions like the UK to halt sales in combustion cars. Prices are falling, models are diversifying and it's all going hand-in-hand with increased investment and roll-out of charging networks . But what electric cars are coming? Let's take a closer look at what you can expect to see hitting the roads in the next few years. JEEP Jeep Wrangler BEV Concept Jeep has teased an all-electric Wrangler. Thanks to a site looking forward to the future of Jeep , we now know that the brand is looking at an electric offroader. Not much is declared about the plans, but it does say more will be revealed at the Easter Jeep Safari. HYUNDAI Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai has teased images of its forthcoming Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 is said to be based on the Hyundai 45 concept that was shown at the 2019 Frankfurt motorshow. It's expected to be a new E-GMP based battery electric vehicle and promised to get a world premiere in February 2021. KIA Kia future electric cars Kia has confirmed that there will be a new next-gen battery electric vehicle announced in early 2021. It will sit on the E-GMP platform, have a crossover-inspired design and over 500km of range. It will be the first launch under the new Kia branding and we suspect it will the car internally known as the Kia CV and closely related to the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5. RENAULT Renault 5 Prototype When in doubt, roll in nostalgia. That seems to be the approach that Renault wants to take, showing off an prototype of an electric Renault 5. We've all got fond memories of this classic, and it would go head-to-head with the Mini Electric and the Honda e as a compact EV for urban dwellers. Please Renault, please, please, please reinvent the Renault 5. MOTOR1 Audi Q4 e-tron Audi unveiled two versions of the Q4 concept - the e-tron and the Sportback . It's very much following the lead of the original e-tron model, offering two styles of electric SUV in smaller sizes than the existing model. That will expand the range towards Q5 size. A range of 279 miles is claimed from an 82kWh battery for the Quattro models, a rear-wheel drive only model should hit 310 miles. We're expecting to see more of the Q4 e-tron later in 2020, with the Sportback due in 2021 - and already spotted in camouflage out testing. BMW BMW iX BMW has announced its flagship electric SUV, the BMW iX . This is the production model of the long-tease iNext, now appearing more like an electric X5 in terms of size. It promises a number of configurations, with 300 mile range, all-wheel drive and a 500ps model. There's a refreshed interior design too, so it feels like something of a continuation of the BMW i3. HYUNDAI Hyundai Kona Electric Hyundai has announced a refreshed version of the Kona Electric , due on the roads in 2021. While the underpinnings remain similar - it will still give impressive 300 mile range and come in two battery sizes - there's been a refresh to the interior and the exterior to make this car look a little more like an EV. No word on pricing, but we expect it to compeitive. GMC Hummer EV There's an electric Hummer coming that promises to be a capable as combustion version. Hummer is throwing in loads of tech and loads of power, wanting to rival the Tesla Cybertruck. There's 350 miles of range promised and a super-fast 350kW charging, while the motors will deliver 1000hp and a 0-60 time of 3 seconds. There's full visibility with cameras under the body, as well as the ability to drive diagonally, thanks to all-wheel steering. Production won't start until late 2021. DACIA Dacia Spring The Dacia Spring is now an official prodcution car. Aimed at the affordable end of the market, it has a range of 140 miles, rugged urban looks, and 44hp. It's designed as a mass market EV for city dwellers. There's no word on pricing, and we also don't know if it's coming to the UK. POLESTAR Polestar Precept The Polestar Precept was a concept design, but Polestar has announced that it's going to put it into production. It's going to be aimed at the premium end of the market, with grand coupe lines and the promise not just of zero tailpipe emissions - but of an environmentally conscious approach to all the materials used in the car. BMW BMW i4 The BMW i4 is due for launch in 2020 and will sit on the same fifth-gen eDrive system as the BMW i3X and the iX. The model is what might expect from a BMW Gran Coupe, but with massive teeth and the details of the eDrive system have already been confirmed. There will be an 80kWh battery that will charge at 150kW and give a range up to 370 miles. The motors will produce 530bhp, giving a 0-62mph time of 4 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. It looks and sounds exactly what you want your mid-range BMW saloon to produce. It will be on the roads in 2021 - but there's also been a tease of an M Performance model . VW VW ID.4 The VW ID.4 is official, the German company's second electric model, this time in compact SUV form. There will be several versions of the ID.4 with 310 miles on the top model, starting as a rear-wheel drive model and expanding to be all-wheel drive in the future. There's no price or exact date on the ID.4, but we can expect to see it in 2021. POCKET-LINT Porsche Macan Porsche has announced that the Macan is going to move to being pure electric - meaning that Porsche will have an electric SUV. It will join the luxury ranks of SUV EVs with a performance leaning, using the 800-volt system Porsche is using in the Taycan, and sitting on the PPE platform adapted from Audi. Not a lot else is being said at the moment, but the shifting of the Macan to electric shows real diversification of the Porsche portfolio. It is expected on the roads in 2022. FORD Ford has promised that there will be an electric F-150 on the roads in 2022. That's going to hit the US market in the big way. Ford hasn't said much about its plans, except that it doesn't want to compromise on the performance that the F-150 offers. SKODA Skoda Enyaq iV Skoda's first electric SUV is the Enyaq iV and it's going to be closely related to the VW ID.4, both sitting on the same platform. Three battery capacities and five power levels mean a range of options, although not all will come to all markets. Prices will start from £33.450 in the UK for the 242 miles range model. It will be on the road in 2021. NISSAN Nissan Ariya Nissan's latest electric car is the Ariya . It was originally unveiled as a concept in 2019, but has made its way to production practically unchanged. It's an SUV, sitting in the space between the Qashqai and the X-Trail. The Ariya will offer two battery sizes and a number of different motor configurations, as well as options for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. With prices starting from an estimated £40,000, it's expected on the roads in 2021. BMW BMW iX3 No longer a concept, the BWM iX3 is the electric version of the X3, meaning you can how get an emission-free BMW SUV. It's a major step, with BMW moving into the mainstream, offering 285 miles from an 80kWh battery. It will first be launching in China 2020, with global roll-out in 2021. VAUXHALL Vauxhall Mokka-e Vauxhall has announced the second-gen Mokka , launching an electric version from the off. It will have a 50kW battery and promises over 200 miles of range. There will be 100kWh charging and a refreshed design, showing the new face of Vauxhall. It's an exciting change, slotting right into the competitive crossover space and it's great to see another EV in this space. It will be available from late summer 2020, price to be confirmed. AUDI Audi Artemis Audi has setup a special working group, called Artemis , with the aim of creating a highly-efficient electric car. The new group has been designed to work autonomously with plenty of freedom, with a target date of 2024 for a new vehicle. It's being headed up by Alex Hitzinger, formerly working on the Apple car project, and previously with some of the biggest names in motorsports. We're expecting something that pops out of the Audi template here, so watch this space. SAIC MOTORS MG 5 MG has said that it's bringing an electric estate car to the UK as soon as it can open showrooms again. Currently there are no electric estates so this fills a small gap in the options available, likely to appeal to those needing accessible load space and dog walkers. It looks to be based on the Chinese Roewe Ei5, and we're expecting a 52.5kWh battery and range of 260 miles. BMW BMW i7 BMW has confirmed that the next-generation of BMW 7 Series will include an all-electric version. It's not going to be exclusively electric as there will be petrol, diesel and hybrid versions too - but there's talk of two versions, the i7 and the i7S. The latter is expect to have a 120kWh battery, 660hp and a range of 320 miles. BMW is serious about electric cars and there's a lot in the pipeline - the BMW i7 will take things to the luxury level. RENAULT Renault Twingo ZE Renault has made one of its cutest cars electric in the Twingo ZE . This compact urban car is designed to keep the price down, with a 22kWh battery - good for 250km (143 miles) - and a 60kW motor, that will whisk you from 0-30mph in 4 seconds, perfect for city driving. There's no word on the price, but we've already heard it's not coming to the UK. FIAT Fiat 500 The Fiat 500 has been relaunched as an electric model, getting a redesign over the 2007 model that's been really popular. Now there's a 42kWh battery and 87kW motor, claiming 0-62mph in 9 seconds, but 0-30 in 3.1 seconds. It supports charging up to 85kW and will give you 199 miles of range (WLTP). There's four seats, lots of options (including convertible) and it's available to order from £29,000. TESLA Tesla Cybertruck If you wanted a vision of the future, then Tesla may have delivered it. Unveiling the Cybertruck , this is Elon Musk's promised pickup truck, with dual cab and then a loading bay at the rear. The Cybertruck is eye-catching with its unusual angular design. On the practical front it will come in three different versions with 250+, 300+ or 500+ miles of range, with the top model, a tri-motor version promising a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds. Tesla doesn't do things by half. It's available for pre-order now, deliveries expected from 2021. VW GROUP VW ID. Space Vizzion VW had long said it was going to have a full family of ID electric cars and the Space Vizzion is what you get when you pull together an electric estate or station wagon. It's quite the looker we can't help thinking and while many are focusing on SUV or crossover models, the lower and longer effect that you get from a wagon could do wonders for the performance of this EV, not to mention the boot space. It's a concept for now, but we're expecting this electric Passat (did we say that?) to be available in 2021. VW is saying 300 miles of range which isn't quite the 600 miles you'll get from the diesel, but we don't have to drive that far to walk the dog, so we'll all cope. FISKER Fisker Ocean Fisker is trying to shake things up with a range of luxury electric cars. The Fisker Ocean got an official unveiling in January 2020 - although it's not due on the road until 2022. It will use recycled and vegan materials, have an 80kWh battery and a range of 250-300 miles. Fisker wants to compete with Tesla with a 0-60 time of less than 3 seconds, but the big unique feature is the option for a full-length solar roof to help charge the battery. POCKET-LINT Electric Range Rover There's a fully electric Range Rover in the works, going under the name of Road Rover, because it's going to be slightly more road-centric than some of the other Range Rovers. It's supposed to sit between the Velar and the Evoque in terms of size, so it sounds a lot like the Jaguar i-Pace. Not much is currently known about what it might offer or when it might appear. POCKET-LINT Seat El-Born Seat is joining the electric car movement with the El-Born , named after a region of Barcelona. The car sits on VW's MEB platform and is due to arrive in 2020, getting its first appearance at the Geneva International Motorshow in 2019. Seat is looking at a 420km range (260 miles), with a 0-62kpm time of 7.5 seconds. There will be 204PS from the 150kW motor and a 62kWh battery. CUPRA Cupra El-Born Cupra - now a separate brand from Seat - has its own version of the el-Born. It also has the same name, Cupra El-Born , which doesn't really aid its cause of being seen as a separate entity. It has sporty looks, a custom chassis control and claims of 310 miles from the 82kW battery. POCKET-LINT Byton M-Byte Byton originally showed off an SUV EV concept , with broad ambitions for a start-up in the EV segment. That has now matured into the Byton M-Byte, with production getting started and looking to get on the road in mid-2020 - in China at least. The price of €54,000 sounds fairly aggressive, but there's little telling what verison that's for. There are two- or all-wheel drive options, with the latter claiming a 270 mile range. Most of the conversation is about the huge 43-inch display curving across the interior, however. POCKET-LINT Lotus Evija The Lotus Type 130 or Evija as it is called, is an all-electric hypercar limited to just 130 models, but paving the way for future production cars from Lotus. It has been designed for maximum performance, with 2000PS and a 70kWh battery that aims to give 250 miles of range. However, the car will offer blistering acceleration, and while Lotus hasn't given final figures, it'll hit 186mph in under 9 seconds. This car will cost £2 million pounds and preorders are open, asking for a £250,000 deposit. POCKET-LINT Lightyear One The Lightyear One is a luxury saloon that adds solar panels to the roof and bonnet of the car, aiming to give the owner a boost from the sun all the time - even when driving. While much of the car is conventional for an EV, the additional solar panels will give a 12km range boost per hour (in good light). That might mean free charging while parked at the beach - although in winter you'll have to charge it more. However, the asking price for the limited run Lightyear One will be €119,000, so going solar comes at a price. POCKET-LINT Audi e-tron GT concept Unveiled at the LA Auto Show 2018, the Audi e-tron GT Concept showcases Audi's future electric sportscar. This is a four seater, powered by the same batteries as the existing e-tron models and sharing a lot with the Porsche Taycan. Audi has been quite open about the co-development of the e-tron GT and the Taycan, and we're expecting a lot of technical similarities. The performances stats currently suggest an 800V charging system, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a range of 248 miles. There's a vegan interior on the Concept model, with Audi saying that it wants to push the eco message even further. The Audi e-tron GT Concept will be hitting the roads in 2020. POCKET-LINT Rivian RS1 Rivian wants to join the EV movement with this offroader of its own. It's designed to tackle the great outdoors, boasting a wading depth of 3ft and 0-60mph time of 3 seconds. Why you'd need to go so fast offroad, we'll never know. Rivian is a newcomer to the EV space, showing off its cars for the first time at the LA Auto Show in 2018 - there's also a truck/pickup version - and is available for pre-order for a $1000 deposit. We'd be tempted to wait until these are actually on the road before parting with any money. POCKET-LINT BMW i5 BMW unveiled the i Vision Dynamics concept coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017. It previews a mid-sized saloon car, in the BMW i range that's likely to be called i5 when it launches in 2021. It's bigger than the company's 3-Series saloon, but smaller than a 5-Series and designed to sit between the i3 and i8 in the electric BMW i range. The family-sized car will be capable of reaching 60mph in under 4 seconds, go on to a speed over 120mph and be able to last up to 372 miles on a single charge. Let's hope it arrives with the same futuristic design displayed on the concept version. POCKET-LINT Faraday Future FF91 A huge question mark hangs over the striking FF91. The company has been through ups and downs, but managed to showcase pre-production drivable models in 2020. The FF-91 has a huge 126-inch wheelbase, but that makes for a huge interior. The panoramic sunroof, rear and side windows use Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Glass, which passengers can tap on to tint the windows and let less light in. Don't expect to get a conventional rear-view mirror inside, as Faraday Future has replaced it with a widescreen monitor instead. The 1,050bhp electric power unit will accelerate to 60mph in 2.39-seconds and will have a driving range between 378 and 435 miles. Faraday Future says the battery can be completely recharged in 1 hour. POCKET-LINT ID Buzz and Cargo Concept The ID Buzz is due to go on sale in 2022. It references VW's historic Microbus and will able to seat up to eight people, with an interior that can be constantly changed around. There's also a Cargo Concept, which may well get launched before any passenger model arrives, with the rising demand for clean first and last mile transport. Two electric motors will give the ID Buzz a total power output of 369bhp to propel it to 60mph in around 5-seconds. It will be limited to a top speed of 100mph, will have four-wheel drive and a 372 mile driving range. You will be able to recharge the battery to 80 per cent, which VW says will be enough for 298 miles of travel, in 30 minutes.
