Nope. Tesla offered the technology to other makers as long as they help pay to build and maintain the chargers. No one has taken them up on that offer and instead want their customers to rely on 3rd party networks and charger manufacturers. This means taking a road trip in a Tesla is still much easier and faster than any other EV. I just took my 2018 Nissan Leaf 150 mile range on a long road trip and it only charged at 28 kw on the way down and only 19 kw on the way back at the same Electrify America CHAdeMO charger. It was labeled 50 kw so not sure why but it was pretty slow to be considered a fast charger. In comparison, Tesla supercharger stations normally charge around 100 or even 200+ kw!
Straight from the horse’s mouth: Audi Newsroom Audi of America is committed to achieving approximately 30 percent of U.S. sales from electric vehicles by 2025. Audi will debut its first all-electric vehicle – the e-tron – in 2018, followed by two more by 2020, the e-tron Sportback and the e-tron GT. With new all-electric vehicles, the brand aims to win over a new generation of drivers who desire the best of electrified efficiency and performance. German Automobile club ADAC frequently does tests with all new cars, and measuring the noise level insides the cabin at 130 kph (80.8 mph) is a standard procedure. The Tesla Model S was measured with 69 db, which is mediocre for a luxury sedan. Some other cars for comparison: Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé S 71.2 db Renault Zoe Intens (Subcompact electric car, 2018 model) 70.1 db Tesla Model 3 LR AWD: 68.7 db BMW i3 (compact electric car) 68.7 db VW Golf 2.0 TDI Turbodiesel: 68 db Tesla Model X 100D: 67.8 db VW e-Golf (electric): 67.5 db Ford Focus EcoBoost 1.5 (three cylinder engine): 67.5 db Toyota Prius Plug in 68.5 db Mercedes S 350 BlueTEC (Turbodiesel, 2013 model): 63.7 db BMW 745e (petrol engine, plugin hybrid, 2020 model): 62 db Audi E-tron 55 quattro (electric car, 2019 model): 63.8 db ADAC points out that all tested Teslas lack a proper sound insulation. They are very silent at low speeds but too noisy for their class at high speed. In the report of the Tesla S, ADAC also mentioned that there are some annoying sounds from the drivetrain which would probably be covered from the sound of an IC engine, but the car does not have one. The BMW 745e was the quietest car I could find. It is 7 db quieter than a Tesla S. That means that it is almost half as loud as a Tesla.
So I am half way on a 4,500 mile road trip from Virginia to Idaho, Colorado and back. I drive a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Some things have happened since I got my car in August of 2018. One was the change in maximum Supercharger output from 120 kW to 150 kW. My charging has typically ramped up to 143 kW. The second thing is that Tesla has issued some firmware updates for the cars to increase charging speed. The end result for my trip is that the charging has gone quickly. If I charge while eating a meal, the car is ready to go long before we’re finished eating, and that even applies to fast food. What I found is that meals and restroom breaks actually take longer than I thought they did, with the car sending me messages that it’s finished charging before I get back, Many Tesla Superchargers are located at hotels or next to them. Most are reasonably close, but looking at our charging needs for the trip, I didn’t select any hotels because they were adjacent to Superchargers, but most ended up being within 2 miles. Some electric cars with lower range and slower charging are not suitable for long trips. An example is a Chevrolet Bolt that charges at a maximum of 55 kW. I saw one data point for the Nissan Leaf: 80% in 45 minutes (100 kW charger) using CHAdeMO, but the problem is that 100 kW CHAdeMO chargers are rare—most are 50 kW. A Fiat 500e is another EV that you would never want for a long trip. An Audi e-tron would be OK.
