2017 Is Here: Here Are the Top 10 Electric Car Companies We update this list regularly because the market is changing so quickly. The new models we’ve driven have caused us to rethink the Top 10. Picking the Top 10 electric car makers now involves making some choices as the number of vehicles available increases. Plug-ins are trending in key markets around the country, although much of the action remains focused in California and other West Coast states. By the end of 2016 the total number of plug-in vehicles (that’s pure battery electrics and plug-in hybrids) sold this year topped 150,000. It’s a year of exponential growth with the expectation this 2017 will be another just like it. We think we’ll see many more miles driven on electrons this year. This list is subjective and weighted toward functionality with an emphasis on fun, but also factors in sales numbers. Enjoy! Let us know what you think. Our New Favorites — the Volkswagen e-Golf & Audi A3 e-tron These little electric rocket ships have now been on the market long enough to establish a good coterie of adherents. While the Golf holds down the 5th spot in pure electric car sales for 2015, we put it at number one for several reasons. Audi expands its plug-in options German engineering – das electric First, it’s a Golf, which is a great small car package. Its cousin, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Audi A3, is a similar delight to drive and has been holding its own in that market segment. The Volkswagen e-Golf is very maneuverable, bringing all of the good suspension work of the seventh generation Golf into an electric car. The packaging of the Golf is another plus. It’s got a decent-size interior with room for five (in a pinch, or four comfortable adults) plus storage behind the hatch in back. While the move to electric drive in an existing platform hasn’t allowed Volkswagen the opportunity to really optimize for the new powertrain, we have no complaints about the standard Golf layout. Then there’s performance: it’s fast, as most electrics are, smart with different regen levels and driving settings, and handles like all the other gas and diesel Golfs, which is to say—great! And the $33,450 e-Golf has been joined by a distant cousin, the Audi A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid, which we recently tested and came away very pleased with what we found. VW has made it clear more plug-ins are coming. We’ve driven recent versions of the e-Golf and everything we said in 2014 still holds true. Road Test: 2014 VW e-Golf. First Drive: 2015 e-Golf . Road Test: 2016 Audi A3 e-tron . 2. Tesla – the 4,800-pound Gorilla Tesla is described as disruptive technology, but in reality the company has done what auto companies have done for a little more than a century—build great cars and match them up with owners who appreciate them. The Model S is the best-selling plug-in car in the U.S. for 2016, followed by the Model X. Almost two-thirds of the battery electric cars sold in the U.S. had Tesla badges on them. We recently spent some time in a brand-new ludicrously loaded Model X P100D and can verify the appeal of the cars. The roomy Model S luxury sedan starts at about $66,000 with four battery pack configurations, but now offers five all-wheel drive version that feature even faster acceleration, topping out with the P100D model. Production of the Roadster, the company’s initial product, ended after deliveries totaling 2,500. The Model S electric range goes from a nominal 219 miles to 331 miles per charge in its big battery configurations. X marks the spot of Tesla’s expansion Tesla helped former shareholder Toyota to bring back the Toyota RAV4 EV , an electric SUV and also aided its other OEM shareholder, Daimler (which also has since divested its Tesla shares), with the Smart ED and B-Class Electric . Now known as simply Tesla (not Tesla Motors since its merger with Elon Musk’s Solar City), has booked more than 350,000 reservations for its upcoming Model 3 , its affordable ($35,000) smaller model due to start production in 2017. Tesla continues to battle with auto dealers in many states as it tries to establish a direct-sales model, although founder Musk has admitted his sales plan may not work when they move to the more mass-market Model 3, which he hopes to sell in volumes of up to 500,000 per year. Tesla News , Tesla News & More Tesla News . First Drive: 2017 Tesla Model X P100D . Chevrolet Bolt/Volt – One-Two Punch in the Electric Gut General Motors has done something remarkable, enough so that we were tempted to jump them up to the top of this chart. They have done two major things to deserve the attention they’re getting. First was to introduce the second generation Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car (which gets tossed in with plug-in hybrids even though its system really takes a different approach). It followed the new Volt with the all-electric 238-mile range Bolt this year. Bolts jolts the market with 200+ miles of range and an affordable price Beating Tesla to the market with the Bolt was quite a coup, particularly with a car as well-executed as this EV is. And that takes nothing away from the redesigned Volt hatchback that has 50+ miles of electric range and more than 400 miles per gasoline fill-up range in its second generation. The Bolt is priced at $37,495 before various rebates and incentives kick in while the Volt has a starting price of about $34,490, but also is eligible for federal and state incentives. Sales of the Bolt just started in December, but we predict it will likely be the best-selling in 2017. If the Volt continues it reign atop the PHEV group that would be quite a two-fer for Chevy and GM. We’ve spent quite a bit of time in this car and think it’s a keeper. It’s won more than a few accolades. The versatility to drive around town and potentially commute as an electric car (Chevy has documented that most drivers will go more than 1,000 miles between fill-ups), coupled with the ability to take longer trips relying on the gasoline “range extender” makes it a great choice for a one-car household. Also at GM, but phasing out are the all-electric Chevrolet Spark EV; it’s a fun city car with 80-mile range between charges. Sales are tapering off for the Cadillac ELR, which uses a plug-in hybrid drive system similar to the Volt, as it goes out of production. With all of its Bolt/Volt news, rumors keep circulating that GM may expand its offering to include other brands. It will introduce a Cadillac CT6 PHEV in spring 2017, but more models may be in the offing. Nissan Leaf – the Standard Bearer Nissan is the sales leader of affordable pure electric cars and is staying the course in its commitment to this technology. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn reiterated recently that his company will support electric drive while also offering plug-in hybrids and fuel cell electric cars and hybrid-electric models. Leaf led the way and promises more changes soon The company’s flagship car is the Leaf, a five-door, five-seat hatchback that is the right size and range for many who drive around 100 miles daily. Nissan makes the Leaf and its batteries in Tennessee for the U.S. market and bumped up the range this last year. It is promising a 200+ mile range version soon. Used Leafs are now coming off lease and onto the market, presenting another option for eco-buyers. The Leaf was refreshed in 2016 with a larger (30 kWh) battery pack and longer range. We tested it twice and liked the extra miles. Road Test: 2016 Nissan Leaf ; Test #2 . 5. BMW – the Ultimate Electric Driving Machine? BMW starts adding plugs throughout its lineup BMW has charged into the electric car space with two strong contenders—the hot-selling i3 and the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. We’ve driven both and are impressed by both, as are many others. The i3 (which actually comes in two versions—a pure battery electric and a ranged-extended EV) is the fourth best-selling plug-in car in the U.S. in 2016, behind only the two Teslas and the Leaf. The i8 is no slouch, either, sitting solidly in the Top 10 plug-in hybrids. Not bad for a car that lists for $136,500. The i3 starts at $42,400. Like most manufacturers, BMW has begun to launch more plug-in models, including the 2016 X5 xDrive40e that we tested, and plug-in versions of the 3-Series and 7-Series. Road Test: 2014 BMW i3 . First Drive: 2015 BMW i8 . 6. Ford – Variety Is Their Spice of Life Ford has made a commitment to fuel efficiency that starts with their widely used EcoBoost engines (basically smaller turbocharged direct-injection engines that can replace larger non-turbo port-injection powerplants). Ford has a trio of plug-in vehicles that are the tip of the spear for its environmental efforts. They start with the full-electric Ford Focus and two plug-in hybrids, the Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi (both of which also come in a plain-Jane hybrid version). Ford offers and expansive range of plug-ins, including the Focus Electric Sales have been steady, but the Fusion Energi in particular had a great year and the pair were the second and third best-selling models in the PHEV sales behind the Volt. They sacrifice some trunk space for the added batteries (compared to the hybrid models), but deliver solid performance and enough for 21 miles of electric-only driving (which is being bumped up slightly in 2017). Ford is adding a hybrid version of the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., the F-150 pickup as well. But that’s not all. Ford is also pushing strongly into the mobility space while also using its electrified vehicles like the Fusion as the test-bed for its autonomous vehicle projects. It’s recent smart mobility projects included adding a crowd-sourced shuttle service, Chariot, and an e-bike sharing program. Road Test: 2016 Ford Focus Electric . Road Test: 2016 Ford Fusion Energi . First Drive: Ford C-Ma x. Toyota – Big in Hybrids; Betting on Fuel Cells & Electrics Toyota, passing nine million hybrid sales worldwide at mid-2016, has dabbled in both plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars, but then seemed focused on fuel cell electric cars, which uses hydrogen to produce electricity on board and power the electric motors. The Prius Prime becomes Toyota’s leader with a plug Toyota’s Prius Plug-In Hybrid has been renamed the Prius Prime and is more distinguished from the standard Prius than in the past. The new model has a longer EV range than its predecessor. Toyota has had some sales success, and has noe promised a new push into electric vehicles. Clean Fleet Report tested the original model, comparing it with the better-known non-plug-in version. Toyota also offered a limited model in California: the only all-electric SUV, the RAV4 EV, with an advertised 150-mile electric range (produced with some help from Tesla, in which Toyota was a shareholder) and earlier did a limited EV run of its minicar, the iQ. Now on the market is the Mirai, a fuel-cell sedan with a 350-mile range and a $57,000 price tag (it delivered more than 1,000 Mirais in 2016). Toyota offers 12 hybrid models (Toyota & Lexus) with similar electric motors and advanced battery packs, sometimes shared with its electric cars. We’ve tested most of those. First Drive: 2013 RAV4 EV . Road Test: Plug-In Prius and Prius Liftback. First Drive: 2016 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle . First Drive: Toyota iQ Kia/Hyundai – Coming on Strong Don’t forget the Korean plug-ins There’s a new badge in town Kia has its Soul EV on the market and its making its presence know. We’ve had a chance to test i t. Along with its parent company Hyundai, Kia is scheduled to launch two plug-in hybrids (the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima) and a Hyundai Ioniq sub-brand that, like the Ford Fusion, will have a hybrid and plug-in hybrid, but also will add a pure electric model. We covered the introduction . In addition, the ambitious company already has launched the Kia Niro dedicated hybrid, which impressed us as well. Hyundai has been leasing its Tucson fuel cell electric vehicles in Southern California for several years now. Road Test: 2015 Kia Soul EV ; Road Test: 2017 Hyundai Sonata PHEV . Daimler Begins an Electric Onslaught In America only with electric motors Daimler is the automotive giant that owns Mercedes-Benz and Smart and also was a Tesla stockholder. While it has had two pure EVs on the market for a while, this year it added three plug-in hybrids—the C350We, GLE 550e and S550 Plug-in. Daimler leads with a B250e, but promises many more electrics The two-seat Smart ED has been selling in small numbers (many to the company’s Car2Go car-sharing subsidiary). The Smart ED minicar went through three generations and we’ve driven the latest version, but only with the gas engine. Mercedes has two versions of its subcompact B-Class, a pure electric with 87 miles of range that we recently had a chance to drive and a fuel cell electric vehicle with a more than 300 miles of range, the only versions of that car available in the U.S. The electric B-Class and Smart ED are at the bottom of the sales list for 2016, selling less than 1,300 units between the two models. The company has announced a massive investment in electric drive vehicles so the expectation is that every year more plug-ins will be coming to the market. The next generation fuel cell car also should surface soon. First Drive: First Drive: 2016 Mercedes-Benz B250e ; Smart Fortwo ED . Fiat – Small, But a Mighty Fine, Fun EV Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is selling the Fiat 500e somewhat reluctantly, but don’t let that turn you away. Even though FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne famously claims the company The Fiat 500e is full of fun loses $14,000 on every $32,780 500e it sells, they do need to sell quite a few of them to meet California’s ZEV (zero emission vehicle) mandate so take advantage while you can. It’s a fun all-electric city car. We thought it was the most fun car of the EV bunch until the e-Golf came out and trumped it both in functionality and fun. Very affordable (sub-$100/month) lease deals have been available for this spunky EV in California (its main market). It manages to carry through the Italian charm and personality found in its gas models. The major drawback, which could be an advantage in an urban location, is the small size of the vehicle. As a two-door with a small back seat, its capability of carrying four adults is limited. Road Test: Fiat 500e . The Rest That’s the Top 10, but the good news is there are even more models on the market and some have come and gone already. Coda Automotive, with its warmed-over Chinese sedan, has departed, but Fisker (now Karma) Automotive has revived its high-end plug-in hybrid under new Chinese ownership. Honda sold a limited number of its Fit EVs and similarly stopped selling the Accord Plug-in Hybrid. Like Toyota and Hyundai, it is focusing on Clarity fuel cell electrics as its main EV strategy going forward, but could return to a pure EV and PHEV depending on market trends. It continues to promote ideas like an integrated car and home energy system that would depend on a plug-in car. Volvo has just started selling its plug-in hybrid version of the XC90 SUV, though numbers are expected to remain low. We tested it recently and came away very impressed. Volvo has indicated more plug-in models will follow. Mitsubishi still offers the i (formerly i-MiEV), though the company skipped the 2015 model year, but the 2016 we tested wasn’t much different than earlier models. The i fits into tight parking spaces and tight electric car buyer budgets, starting at about $29,000. It’s a very Japanese model five-door, four-passenger hatchback. The i has an electric range of 62 miles (EPA adjusted) with a 16kWh lithium battery. Although it’s been modified for the US market it still feels very much like the Japanese-market original, which is to say, less substantial than many of its competitors. Mitsubishi also reiterated its intent to bring a plug-in version of its popular Outlander SUV to the U.S. this coming year (as has been promised for several years). Then there’s Porsche (another VW affiliate) with its plug-in Panamera sedan, Cayenne SUV and 918 sports car also in the market. Other companies have teased plug-ins, but we’ll wait until we see hardware before A plug-in Porsche adding them to any list. California and seven other states reaffirmed their goal to have 3.3 million electric cars (including plug-in hybrids and fuel cells) on the road by 2025. The numbers are basically accounted for in the ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mandate that the states have in place, but rely on a steep ramp up of sales after 2020. Based on sales reports, more than 500,000 plug-in vehicles have been sold in the U.S. since the Tesla roadster was introduced in 2008. More than half of them were in California. One good example is the Hyundai Prophecy concept, a stunning, self-driving electric car with Blade Runner-like technology. It comes from a company no one thought much about just a few years ago. It’s not alone; we’ve compiled a list of the 20 best future cars that will arrive by 2022. 2021 Rivian R1T and R1S Available in: 2021 Base price: $69,000 (R1T), 72,500 (R1S) Why it’s worth the wait: Because it accelerates like a sports car, can off-road like Land Rover’s Range Rover, and has a quad-motor system (don’t forget about its tank turning ability). The main difference between Rivian‘s R1T and R1S is the body. The basic platform (including the lithium-ion battery pack and the four motors) is the same: the different power outputs, the 125-mph top speed, and the supercar-like acceleration. There are three variants of each model. The most basic one has a 105-kilowatt-hour battery pack that delivers up to 230 miles of range, 402 horsepower, and a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.9 seconds. Next up is a model with a 135-kWh battery, a 300-mile range, a whopping 754 hp, and a three-second sprint to 60. Finally, the 180-kWh model can drive for up to 400 miles between charges, makes 700 hp, and reaches 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. The R1T has a 1,764-pound payload capacity and an 11,000-pound towing capacity if you're more into hauling. 2022 Ferrari Purosangue Available in: 2021 Base price: $350,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: This is Ferrari’s first SUV, what else is there to say? For many years, Ferrari promised it would never do what almost every automaker has done: Make an SUV. That’s why the Italian firm prefers the term FUV, which stands for Ferrari Utility Vehicle. Regardless, the Purosangue is going to be good-looking, loud, high-tech, and, of course, exceptionally quick. We don’t expect to find a V12 under the hood, but a hybrid system made up of a twin-turbocharged V8 and one or more electric motors is likely. Early estimates peg its output at over 700 horsepower but under the SF90’s 986-horse rating. All-wheel drive and an adjustable suspension should guarantee at least a smidge of off-road prowess. Visually, the Purosangue will likely borrow a handful of styling cues from the GTC4Lusso hatchback (pictured above). 2021 Audi E-Tron GT Available in: 2021 Base price: $90,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s Audi’s Tesla-fighter. If you squint, you might see some of the Porsche Taycan‘s DNA while looking at the Audi E-Tron GT concept. That’s hardly a surprise: The two electric sedans are built on the same bones. We haven’t seen the production version of Audi’s sleek four-door yet, but the concept is a real head-turner. Its dual-motor powertrain gives it 590 horsepower and allows it to reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds while keeping your foot down will get it to 124 mph in 12 seconds. Audi claims a 249-mile driving range on the European testing cycle. We’ll have a better idea of what the specifications sheet will look like when the production model makes its debut in late 2020. 2022 Polestar 3 Available in: 2021 Base price: $70,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: The 3 will take Volvo-owned Polestar into the SUV segment. Polestar’s 1, a plug-in hybrid coupe, and 2, an electric fastback, are both in production. The firm is now looking ahead to its tallest vehicle yet, the aptly-named 3. Official specifications about this SUV are few and far between but we expect dual-motor all-wheel-drive, about 300 miles of range, and an updated version of the Android-powered infotainment system that made its debut in the 2. From a design standpoint, Polestar told Digital Trends the 3 will draw inspiration from the Precept concept (shown above) unveiled in 2020. Anyone can get an exclusive idea of these cars by watching this video. 2021 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and CT4-V Blackwing Available in: 2021 Base price: $65,000 (CT4) (est.), $85,000 (CT5) (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: They’re Cadillac’s next super-sedans. Cadillac still gives a shift. The sedan that will replace the CTS-V will continue to offer a six-speed manual transmission. Those who don’t need or want three pedals will be able to order a 10-speed automatic. Either way, we expect the CT5-V Blackwing will receive Cadillac’s 6.2-liter V8 supercharged to 650 hp. The smaller CT4-V Blackwing (shown above) will replace the excellent ATS-V. It will receive an evolution of its predecessor’s twin-turbocharged, 3.6-liter V6 rated at over 465 hp. Transmission options will include a 10-speed automatic and a six-speed stick. To be clear, neither of these high-performance family-haulers will receive the seemingly short-lived Blackwing V8 inaugurated by the CT6-V. This orphan of an engine might not be used again. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Available in: 2021 (or late 2020) Base price: $36,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the first purpose-designed electric car Volkswagen will sell in the U.S. The Tiguan-sized ID.4 is an electric crossover that will join Volkswagen’s battery-only ID sub-brand. Although not a ton of information has been released about it, we know a rear-wheel drive, single-motor version will be available at launch and an all-wheel-drive, dual-motor model will join the range a little later. The ID.4 will be built on Volkswagen’s modular MEB platform, which also underpins the Europe-only ID.3 and the ID. Buggy we drove in California in 2019. It will later be joined in showrooms by an electric van inspired by the rear-engined Bus. 2022 Tesla Roadster Available in: 2021 (or 2022) Base price: $200,000 Why it’s worth the wait: This will be Tesla’s most powerful and fastest car. No, we’re not talking about t he original Roadster that Elon Musk launched into space; we’re looking forward to the second-generation model, which will arrive as an electric supercar. The next Roadster will use an extra-large, 200-kWh battery pack that will give it incredible performance. Tesla claims a 1.9-second zero-to-60-mph time (or, if you’re brave, zero-to-100 in 4.3 seconds), an 8.8-second quarter-mile time, and a top speed of over 250 mph. We expect the all-wheel-drive Roadster will pack three electric motors (one upfront and two in the rear) but a two-motor configuration is also possible. The four-seater EV will also offer a generous, 620-mile driving range and a removable glass roof. Tesla is already taking reservations so enthusiasts can make a $5,000 initial deposit and a $45,000 payment within 10 days. The Founders Series Roadster requires a much higher $245,000 payment within 10 days. 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI Available in: 2021 Base price: $29,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: Because it’s a hot hatch icon that’s practical, fun to drive, and affordable. The upcoming eighth-generation GTI has more power than its predecessor. This probably answers your first question. It’s still powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine but its output now checks in at 241 hp and 273 lb-ft. of torque compared to 228 and 258, respectively, for the outgoing model. Volkswagen makes a six-speed manual transmission standard but a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is offered at an extra cost. On the tech front, a 10-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster help give the interior a modern and premium look. Expect slightly more space for people and gear thanks to the eighth-gen Golf’s larger dimensions. The GTI will go on sale in Europe before it reaches North America. 2021 BMW i4 Available in: 2021 Base price: $50,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: This is BMW’s answer to the Tesla Model 3. The i4 will be BMW’s third i-badged car when it enters production in Munich, Germany, in 2021. Its 80-kWh lithium-ion battery pack will power a 530-hp powertrain that will unlock a 3.5-second sprint from zero to 60 mph. The range will check in at about 270 miles. We haven’t seen the production version yet, but the concept (shown above) introduced in 2020 gives us an accurate idea of what the model will look like when it lands in showrooms. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Available in: Late 2020 Base price: $43,895 Why it’s worth the wait: It’s Ford’s first purpose-designed EV. The sporty-looking Mustang Mach-E is an electric crossover, not a sports car, but it’s quick nonetheless. It will be offered in five variants ranging from the entry-level Select to the flagship GT. The range champion will be the rear-wheel-drive California Route 1, which will be capable of driving for about 300 miles between charges. Don’t let the name fool you; the Mach-E shares nothing with the two-door Mustang. It’s electric, and it’s packed with cutting-edge tech features like a portrait-oriented touchscreen on the center stack. 2021 BMW M3 and M4 Available in: 2020 Base price: $40,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the latest in a long line of driver-friendly BMW models. Rear-wheel drive and manual transmission? Yes, please! Don’t worry if that’s not for you; an automatic transmission will also be available. All-wheel drive will join the list of options for the first time, too. Purists will undoubtedly shun this version but it will be a little bit quicker than the rear-wheel-drive variant. The next-generation M3 (and its two-door counterpart, the M4) will share their twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight-six with the X3 M. It makes 473 hp and 442 lb-ft. of torque in its most basic state of tune, and 503 hp in Competition trim. Time will tell if BMW keeps these figures for its lower models or if it builds on them. 2021 Mercedes EQC Available in: 2021 Base price: $67,900 Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the most convincing electric car from Mercedes-Benz to date. Mercedes-Benz delayed the North American launch of its electric EQC crossover by a year, so we’ll have to wait and see what the three-pointed star’s answer to Tesla is really like. Fortunately, for us, we have plenty of information about this dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric car. The powertrain generates 402 hp and 561 lb-ft. of torque, which launches the EQC to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. An 80-kWh battery pack powers the motors. Its range should check-in at approximately 220 miles, though we won’t know for sure until it lands on our shores. The EQC will offer a long list of driver-assistance features and dual 10.25-inch touchscreens — one for the digital instrument cluster, and the second for the infotainment system. Pricing starts at $67,900 before incentives. 2022 GMC Hummer Available in: Late 2021 Base price: $70,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s GMC’s entry into the electric truck segment. Like many electric trucks, the GMC Hummer will have a lot of big numbers to brag about. How do three motors and 1,000 horsepower sound? Or, a three-second sprint to 60 mph? GMC will offer one-, two-, and three-motor variants of the born-again Hummer. Its large, 200-kWh battery pack will unlock up to 400 miles of driving range, though smaller batteries will be available. Production will take place in Detroit, in the same factory that once built Chevrolet’s Volt and Impala models, and the pickup will reach showrooms at about the same time as some of its rivals, including the Rivian R1T and the electric Ford F-150. 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer Available in: Late 2021 Base price: $40,000 (est.), $50,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: Because they will be Jeep’s biggest and most luxurious models. The Grand Cherokee is big, but it’s not big enough. Considering Jeep is an off-roader specialist in a world dominated by high-riding models, it’s a little odd to notice it doesn’t have a full-size, three-row SUV to compete with the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Tahoe, among others. That will change in the early 2020s. Jeep confirmed it’s bringing back the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer nameplates on a pair of SUVs that will share their body-on-frame construction with the surprisingly docile Ram 1500 pickup. They’ll get an independent rear suspension, up to three rows of seats, and a wide panoply of powertrains including hybrid and diesel options. The luxurious Grand Wagoneer will chase the Cadillac Escalade and the Lincoln Navigator into the six-digit territory. 2022 Tesla Cybertruck Available in: Late 2021 (or 2022) Base price: $39,900 Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the first electric truck from the company that started the EV craze. Before we dive into the specs and pricing, remember that this futuristic-looking truck has an outer exterior shell (or exoskeleton) made of what Tesla calls ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel. It also has what the company calls armor glass, glass and polymer layered composite that is made to be stronger than regular glass, though this didn’t work as advertised in 2019. And, the cargo box is configured to hold (and charge) an electric ATV. The Cybertruck will come in three flavors. The base, rear-wheel-drive single-motor version ($39,900) will have a driving range of up to 250 miles, a 7,500-pound towing capacity, and a 6.5-second zero-to-60-mph time. The mid-range, all-wheel-drive model ($49,900) will have a 300-mile range, a 10,000-pound towing capacity, and a 4.5-second zero-to-60 time. Finally, the flagship model ($69,900) will drive for about 500 miles between charges, tow 14,000 pounds, and reach 60 in 2.9 seconds. An autopilot and an air suspension will be standard on every variant. 2021 Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport Available in: Late 2020 (or early 2021) Base price: $32,000 (Bronco, est.), $28,000 (Bronco Sport, est.) Why it’s worth the wait: The legendary Bronco nameplate returns to compete against the Jeep Wrangler. The Bronco is back, and it has the emblematic Jeep Wrangler in its crosshairs. This rugged, body-on-frame off-roader will be available with two or four doors and both versions will come with a removable top. Adventurers will also be able to remove the doors and fold down the windshield. Ford has done its best to keep the design under wraps until the model’s official unveiling but a variety of leaked images revealed it ahead of time. Sources close to the Blue oval suggest the entry-level engine will be an evolution of the turbocharged, 2.3-liter four-cylinder that equips the Ranger. V6 engines from the F-150 might appear on the list of options. Rumors claim a 10-speed automatic transmission will be standard, and a seven-speed manual with a granny gear will be optional. Aimed right at Jeep’s Compass, the smaller Bronco Sport won’t be as rugged but it should still be capable when the going gets tough. It will be built on a unibody platform shared with the new Escape, and it will receive three- and four-cylinder engines depending on the trim level. Hybrid power will be available sooner or later, too. Both variants of the Bronco — which won’t share anything other than a name — will make their debut in 2020. 2022 Ford F-150 Electric Available in: 2022 (or late 2021) Base price: $60,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the electric version of America’s most popular truck. Unlike the other electric trucks on the list, there is currently little information on the F-150 Electric (prototype pictured above). Besides its ability to tow a train, which isn’t as impressive as it might sound, we don’t know much about it. It’s safe to say this pickup will offer quick acceleration (zero-to-60-mph in about four seconds), a driving range in the vicinity of 300 miles, and multiple motor configurations with different power outputs. Regardless of specifications, the electric F-150 will have plenty of competition when it goes on sale. It will be interesting to see if Ford’s hot-selling trucks can continue outselling their rivals in the EV world. 2020 Audi RS6 Avant Available in: 2020 Base price: $109,000 Why it’s worth the wait: It’s a fast, gorgeous super-wagon — and a rare thing in America. Audi is finally bringing the high-performance RS 6 Avant to the United States. It was worth the wait because it packs a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 that sends 591 hp and 590 lb-ft. of torque to the four wheels via Audi’s time-tested Quattro system. These figures correspond to a 3.5-second sprint to 60 mph, though that’s likely a conservative number and a 190-mph top speed. It’s high-tech, too, thanks in part to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that keeps fuel economy in check and a long list of driver-assistance features. Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a pair of large, high-resolution color touchscreens for the infotainment system. This is arguably the hottest-looking Audi available in 2020, though the RS 7 Sportback isn’t far behind. 2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Available in: 2021 (or late 2020) Base price: $109,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: It’s the most practical version of the Porsche Taycan and it’s a wagon. Somehow, a second wagon landed on this list. It’s not your average family hauler; this wagon is electric and, best of all, it’s a Porsche. Positioned as a more spacious evolution of the Taycan, the Cross Turismo will get a more rugged design and a few additional inches of ground clearance to allow for light off-roading. We expect it will be identical to its sedan counterpart under the sheet metal, so it will post impressive performance numbers. 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Available in: 2021 Base price: $99,000 (est.) Why it’s worth the wait: Except for models from brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Mercedes S-Class has been the benchmark of large luxury sedans for decades. It’s a little easier to forget the high price when you purchase such a highly advanced piece of technology. Until recently, it would have been weird to say that a vehicle is a technological masterpiece. However, with all the incredible innovations and improvements within the auto industry, we’ll certainly be seeing and experiencing first-hand the aftereffects in our vehicles. We’re confident that brand new features like driver assistance will astound anyone without prior experience with similar systems. One of the many exceptional upgrades to the vehicle’s interior is a vertical touchscreen on the dashboard. If you love screens, you’ll love this new feature. With this vehicle, you’ll get four additional screens in separate areas throughout the car, offering an entirely new dynamic experience between driver and car. The fifth-generation A6 is being engineered in a joint programme with new versions of the A7 and A8. It’s known under the internal name C8. All three new models share platform, driveline, chassis and electrical systems to improve economies of scale. Stylistically, the new A6 leans heavily on Audi’s Prologue concept car. The next A7 and A8 are set to share a lot of their look with the A6, too. Audi design chief Marc Lichte said: “We designed the new A6, A7 and A8, then put the essence of all three into the Prologue. Every element can be traced to the production car.” Key design elements include a wide hexagonal single-frame grille, angular headlights with distinctive LED graphics and a more heavily contoured bonnet. At the side are larger wheel houses, a flatter roof line and pronounced haunches over the wheel arches. The rear will feature OLED tail-lights, which are set to be previewed on the Audi e-tron quattro at the Frankfurt motor show later this month. Inside, there is a newly designed dashboard and an all-new control layout. Employing the same touchscreen and enhanced touchpad MMI (Multi Media Interface) functions as the next A8, the new dashboard will support up to three high-definition monitors. There is an instrument display behind the steering wheel, a multimedia display mounted high in the driver’s line of sight and a third display lower in the centre section of the dashboard for features such as the air conditioning. A new connectivity platform uses the latest in wireless local area network technology. This will allow continuous updating of traffic conditions for the navigation system, as well as software updates for the control system. Although the new A6 has similar external dimensions to today’s car, it’s claimed to have more interior space thanks to its second-generation MLB platform.The new A6 has a slightly longer wheelbase, wider tracks and shorter overhangs, freeing up space both front and rear. Luggage capacity is set to rise over today’s 530 litres (saloon) and 565 litres (Avant). The new platform adopts a high percentage of hot-formed high-strength steel, aluminium and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic to cut weight. Audi sources suggest the entry-level four-pot petrol A6 weighs well under the 1535kg of today’s A6 1.8 TFSI. Power for the volume-sellers will continue to come from an extended range of four-cylinder engines. These will be revised versions of today’s petrol and diesel fours and offer similar outputs to those used by the new A4. More luxurious petrol A6s will use new 3.0-litre V6 and 4.0-litre V8 engines sourced from the Audi-Porsche ‘Kovomo’ engine joint venture, according to insiders. Audi also plans a new range of V6 and V8 diesels with electric turbocharging - a technology Audi will launch on its upcoming SQ7. In addition, Audi will give A6 buyers the option of a petrol-electric or diesel-electric plug-in hybrid system.

It’s obvious to anyone with eyeballs that the V5 is a design rip-off of BMW’s X1 compact SUV. But Germany’s BMW seems OK with that. Primarily because Brilliance China Automotive Holdings holds a 50% stake in BMW Brilliance , a joint venture that produces, distributes and sells BMWs (including the original X1) in China. Many of these Chinese rip-offs are crudely built from copied Humvee parts, from the chassis to the transmission to the diesel engine. The Dong Feng EQ2050 HMV (High Mobility Vehicle), based on an imported AM General Hummer H1 chassis, is just such a copycat. That’s where China’s Lifan Motors steps in with its 330. First seen in 2008 as the 320, the Mini Cooper knockoff has been so popular it was facelifted in 2013 to keep up with the original Mini Cooper’s design evolution, and is now called the 330. Amazingly, Lifan sells its Cooper copycat in other countries outside of China with lax copyright infringement laws, such as Peru and Russia. On sale in Europe since 2012, it’s an all-electric 1+1 urban vehicle meant to deal with congested city traffic in a practical and inexpensive (prices start at around $12,000) way. But no worries, because China’s Zhejiang Litong New Energy Automobile Corporation has stepped in with its Rayttle E28, a near clone of the original French car. Like its BYD S8/Mercedes-Benz CLK design rip-off, BYD’s S7 is a full-on copycat of the Lexus RX crossover. At least BYD isn’t cloning a recent RX. The S7 is a near copy of the second-generation 2003 to 2008 Lexus crossover. Credit to BYD, you can get an S7 with seven seats, unlike the five-seat RX. And while the Lexus only came with a V6, the BYD rip-off is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder. Hawtai is a Beijing-based automaker that partnered with Hyundai between 2002 and 2010 to manufacture the Korean automaker’s cars in China. One residual from that relationship is the Hawtai B35 SUV, a Porsche Cayenne design rip-off built off a first-generation 2000 to 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe platform.
