The two Izera prototypes unveiled were a hatchback and an SUV. The vehicles are the result of four years of work and research. The prototypes were designed by an international team composed of Polish engineers as well as workers of Torino Design, an Italian automotive design studio founded by Roberto Piatti. The renowned Polish car designer Tadeusz Jelec , who was involved with Jaguar for 30 years, also worked on the vehicles. Both of the prototypes have elegant, pleasant shapes. Their bodies are largely devoid of sharp angles, which gives them a fluid look. The hatchback has a bit of a sporting vibe to it, whereas the SUV, although bigger, doesn’t seem at all heavy. Both vehicles have short overhangs and passenger compartments reaching close to the front axle – features that are characteristic of modern electric cars. Piatti, who was present at the unveiling, said that the cars’ lights, which are very similar in both models, reference the Izera Mountains. Indeed, when you give the lights a closer look you can see in them shapes that bring to mind gentle hill slopes. Also, the lights include intriguing-looking arrays of shining points which somewhat resemble stars in the night sky. This seems to be a nod to the aforementioned dark-sky park. Thanks to the characteristic and appealing lights, the Izera models have a unique look – there’s no risk of mistaking the prototypes for any other car. Furthermore, Izera’s vehicles are meant to be family-friendly , and this is another thing that links them to their namesake mountain range: With their mild hills and vast areas, the [Izera] mountains are perfect for family trips and have a very distinctive character. The modern character of the interior is highlighted by the digital dashboard, which handsomely merges with a digital touchscreen located in the centre of the front. The passengers in the rear will be able to use the fold-out tray tables and magnetic phone grips located in the backs of the front seats. When it comes to the cars’ technical details, these seem to be well in line with current developments in the field of electric cars. Once fully ready (after the prototype phase is through), the vehicles will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries that will let you drive up to 400 km on a single charge. The batteries will make use of fast-charge stations as well as home chargers. The top speed of the two Izera models will be distinctly family-friendly too; it won’t exceed 160 km per hour. But the acceleration, on the other hand, will let you experience some motorsport-like emotions ; the cars will reach 100 km per hour in less than 8 seconds! At the unveiling of the prototypes, ElectroMobility Poland announced its plans to put the vehicles into mass production. This caused quite a bit of excitement amongst Polish car aficionados, as Poland hasn’t had a mass-produced domestic car since 2002 when the production of the venerable Polonez came to a halt. That old-school automobile was designed in the 1970s, and although it can sometimes still be seen in Polish streets, it belongs to a past era. Today ElectroMobility Poland is looking to build a car factory in the region of Silesia (the exact spot hasn’t been revealed), where the production of Izeras could start by 2023. The company wants to eventually manufacture 100,000 vehicles per year. Apart from the two models shown in Sokołów, there are plans for three other ones. Little is currently known about these additional models – apart from that they will all, of course, be electric and designed in a similar style to the first two. The prices of the new brand’s vehicles aren’t known yet, but they will supposedly be affordable enough for the average Polish family to purchase. For 2014 it was tweaked, with subtly honed suspension settings, better sat nav, a standard eight-speed auto with stop-start plus big improvements in diesel efficiency. Now it’s been facelifted again, with revised engines and interior tech, full-LED headlights and more distinctive ‘J-blade’ daytime running lights. The Bentley Bentayga is the Crewe marque’s first SUV, and if you we’re being cynical, you’d immediately point out that underneath, this car shares some of its roots with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, the Audi Q7, the Lamborghini Urus, and indeed the VW Touareg. But being a Bentley, it has to be faster than the Porsche, more luxurious than the Audi, more refined than the VW and better off-road than the Lambo. Excess all areas. And you know what? Bentley has succeeded. We can debate the morality of two-tonne-plus SUVs versus their popularity forever, but there’s no doubt that the Bentayga is a tour de force. It’s been around since, so there have been several models of Bentayga so far. The original was the standard W12, powered by a 6.0-litre bi-turbo engine good for 605bhp. That’s now been superseded by the Bentayga Speed, which uses a redeveloped version of the same engine to achieve 626bhp. Too profligate? If you were quick ,you could have got hold of the first and only diesel Bentley ever made: the Bentayga diesel, which used Audi’s 430bhp electro-turbo V8 derv. A magnificently rangey and torque-rich experience, the tide-turn against diesel saw the model killed off in Europe, effectively replaced by a V6 petrol a plug-in hybrid model instead, bolstering the Bentayga’s eco ranks. Sort of. There’s also a V8 petrol model, which is probably the sweet spot of the range, as it is with most Bentleys, truth be told. All Bentaygas are of course four-wheel drive, all weigh north of two tonnes, and all of them seat five people. Apart from the ones optioned like a private jet to seat four instead. Prices? From £130,000, if you avoid the options. As if you would… 7.Rolls-Royce Wraith £251,240 – £288,410 The Wraith is billed as “the most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history”. The first bit is easily dealt with: a turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 sends 624bhp to the rear wheels, ten per cent more power than you’ll find even in the new Phantom and Cullinan. As for the most dynamic? Well, you’d argue that’s not difficult, given Rolls has long mastered the art of hefty, comfy cars that are designed to soothe not scintillate. But the Wraith is based upon the Ghost limo, so it’s hardly got a sporting chassis at its core, though its rear axle has been widened and its wheelbase shortened. “The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering,” says Rolls, “while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive.” Achieving those high speeds ought to be a doddle; with two turbos, the Wraith has a ginormous 590lb ft of torque available from 1,500rpm, enough to shift its 2.4 tonnes to 60mph in 4.4secs. Quicker than hot hatches with not dissimilar power-to-weight ratios, and quite startling to experience in something with lambs’ wool floor mats. Indeed, it may be the most sporting Rolls ever, but it’s still dripping in luxury. There are four finely proportioned seats, sumptuous materials across most surfaces and head- and leg-room aplenty, even in the rear. Don’t worry, the front seats electrically whirr forward to allow anyone climbing into the back some extra grace. Its £250,000 starting price really is just the start, too. Few Rolls-Royces leave the Goodwood factory without first having been made fully bespoke to their buyer’s needs; colour-matched inside and out, fibre-optic star headlining fitted, the full works. Half the fun of having a Rolls-Royce isn’t driving it (or being driven in it), but the buying process itself. The Wraith is now one of the oldest Rolls-Royces on sale, having arrived in 2013. The Ghost it’s spun from landed in 2010, and its drop-top sibling – the Dawn – started production in 2015. While the new-generation Phantom is sold only as a saloon, the Wraith is the car of choice if you want your Rolls-Royce to take the form of a two-door coupe. 6.BMW 7 Series Well, it used to be the ultimate BMW. A 7 Series was the undisputed flagship. But is that the case any more? Especially now that the X7 exists – a luxury limo in the (ghastly) shape of a seven-seat SUV. There’s the new 8 Series too, which will spawn a four-door saloon version – with an M badge. Certainly, there are other BMWs vying for the title of boss of the family. Meanwhile, BMW’s been listening to what its customers wanted from the 7 to beat the likes of the Mercedes S-Class (traditionally the class-defining leader in the limo set) and the Audi A8. And, what they came up with was a triple-threat approach. “Make it more imposing, make it look more different to a 3 and 5 Series, and give us more novelty features,” said the customers. Well, we can probably tick off tasks 1 & 2. The new 7 Series is a mildly terrifying looking object, thanks mostly to slimmer laser headlights framing a grille that’s 40 per cent bigger than the last version. No kidding. The whole bonnet is 50mm higher to squeeze in the mega grille, all in the name of giving the car more road presence. Lower down, the bumper now has cleaner, slipperier aero, diverting draughts into the front wheelarches and back out again by newly vertical ‘air breather’ vents, which reduce drag. Boy is it bluff to look at. A BMW caricature. In a hall of mirrors. Round the back, the LED lights are now more angular and their lighting elements animate and ‘scroll’ across the car. Apparently the boss of BMW Korea hugged the designers when they demonstrated this, so grateful was he that this gimmick – sorry, novelty – had been built in. Oh, and there’s a full-width light bar at the back, like every other German car these days. Are you not convinced? Are you wretching over your screen? Well frankly, unless you’re in China, BMW doesn’t give a monkey’s. In China, the 7 Series has a 40 per cent market share, and the big grilles and XXL chrome is bang-on for Asian tastes. BMW says it’s also had bags of positive feedback about how the car looks from American and European customers. They seem to be quite difficult to track down, though… Inside, the 7 has been gifted a new centre console layout with flush glossy buttons from the 8 Series, and the new digital dials from right across the BMW range. The highlight is the bodyshell. BMW made use of techniques and production methods devised for the i3 and i8 to trim 40kg from the 7’s chassis, which incorporates bits of carbon fibre (some as long as a normal-sized bloke is tall) for added stiffness, strength and lightness. All told, the new 7 is some 130kg lighter than the old car. A net 200 if you factor in all the added kit, which weighs 70kg by itself. Powertrain wise, the biggest improvements come in the 740Le plug-in hybrid, which can now go up to 36 miles on a charge, thanks to a 40 per cent increase in battery capacity. There’s also an entirely new, and utterly glorious V8, in the 750i, which is great news for American customers but of little note in Britain, where it’ll incur more tax than a cross-channel ferry. The M760Li V12 lives on, albeit dropping below 600bhp because of pesky new particulate filters strangling the power a touch. We doubt you’ll notice. 5.Audi A8 £70,785 – £104,590 A big, important barge of a thing relatively few will buy, and a technical achievement few have the resources or engineering might to match or surpass. It’s the new Audi A8 – the cleverest Audi of all. And so it should be, because if you really want to see what a manufacturer is truly capable of engineering, you look at its flagship. And the A8 is and always had been Audi’s, which is why the new one gets a load of tech’ we haven’t seen before, but almost certainly will on future A6s and A4s. Tech’ like ‘Traffic Jam Pilot’, which delivers “conditional level three autonomy” by taking complete control of the steering, brakes and accelerator on motorways and dual-carriageways. Or the new infotainment system, which pairs Audi’s ‘Virtual Cockpit’ instrument cluster with two touchscreens for a largely button-free centre-console. Much of said tech’ can only exist for the 48-volt, water-cooled electrical system that technically makes the A8 an ‘MHEV’, or ‘mild-hybrid electric vehicle’. This all takes some explaining, so more later. More too on the interior, which because the new A8 is bigger than the car it replaces – longer by 32mm and taller by 13 in either short- or long-wheelbase (which adds another 13cm of rear legroom) – is suitably spacious. The car’s heavier too; for all the aluminium, CFRP and magnesium Audi promises it’s used in the more rigid ‘Space Frame’ chassis, it’s almost 100kg up on the old car and lardier than either of its main competitors, the (relatively) featherweight carbon-cored BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. So in the short-term anyway, it’s not massively quick. For starters Brits get a 3.0-litre V6 in either petrol or diesel. An ‘e-tron’ plug-in hybrid (with wireless charging) will follow along with a W12 and 4.0-litre diesel V8. And the one you want is… 4.Bentley Continental GT There’s a key point in Bentley’s timeline that we can call BC: Before Continental. So vital was the first Conti GT – not only for sales, but setting a template and tone for the whole brand – that you could easily argue that were it not for the two-door coupe Bentley might very well not be with us today. The most successful luxury car of modern times? Quite probably. And now it’s into its second generation. It must sell well, and it must still be the focal point for the whole brand, to embody what a Bentley is while the Bentayga SUV makes the big bucks elsewhere in the range. It’s a handsome thing, the new Conti GT, at least in profile, where the front wheels have been shifted forward to improve the weight distribution and drop the engine lower and further back in the chassis. In fact 55 per cent of the weight still sits on those front wheels, but there’s less of it than before – the body alone is 80kg lighter, helping the new Conti GT weigh ‘only’ 2,244kg. But Bentley has made no secret of the fact that a heavy kerb weight actually helps deliver the road-crushing stability and momentum that characterises the way its cars drive. They’re knowingly hefty things. Powerful 48v electrics from the Bentayga are used – among other things – to manage the suspension, with actuators on front and rear anti-roll bars combating body roll. The set 40:60 power split is now fully variable and actually sends 100 per cent of torque to the rear wheels as often as possible to the benefit of fuel efficiency and emissions. There are two engines to choose from. Cheapest is the V8, a 4.0-litre twin turbo offering up 550bhp, a 4.0sec 0-62mph time and 198mph top speed. Another eleven grand upgrades you to the big-boy 6.0-litre W12 engine. Basically two V6s on a common crank, it’s carried over from the old Conti albeit modified enough for Bentley to declare it the ‘most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world’. It features cylinder shut off under light loads, while also producing 626bhp and a thumping 664lb ft of torque from a mere 1,350rpm, maintaining that through to 4,500rpm. Performance is better: 0-62mph takes 3.7sec and its top speed is 207mph. Both versions powering all four wheels through an eight-speed gearbox and, should be feel like behaving uncouthly, via a launch control system. Standard specification includes full Matrix LED lights, a 12.3in central touchscreen, wifi, head-up display, night vision, a 650w stereo and 21in wheels. Pricing starts at around £150,000, putting this in direct competition with the likes of the Aston Martin DB11, Mercedes S63 Coupe and Ferrari Portofino. But you won’t be spending that. You’ll be spending much more, getting the stitching to match your shoes, the wood to match the office in your third home, and so on. This is a car made for the bespoke treatment. 3.Rolls-Royce Phantom Since the first Phantom appeared in 1925, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has had its ups and downs. When the outgoing Phantom appeared at the stroke of midnight on January 1st 2003, the company even called it ‘the last great automotive adventure’. Maybe that should have been penultimate, because we’ve just driven the new car, and as internal combustion most likely won’t be around in another 14 years’ time, this really could be The One. Rolls-Royce reckons the Phantom is the barometer by which everyone else in the world of expensive luxury goods measures themselves, so the bar isn’t just raised here, it’s bejewelled and platinum-plated. You know when someone claims to be ‘the Rolls-Royce of watches/furniture/granite-kitchen-worktops’? Well, this is the Rolls-Royce of Rolls-Royces. Rolls says the Phantom’s new spaceframe structure is 30 per cent more rigid than the previous model, a figure that rises significantly in key areas such as suspension and gearbox. This new structure, coincidentally, offers sufficient flexibility to underpin the next wave of Rolls product, its SUV included. The chassis gets an all-new suspension setup, with a double wishbone configuration on the front, a five-link axle at the rear, adaptive dampers, and active anti-roll bars. It’s also the latest car to benefit from four-wheel steering, whose three degrees of counter-steer help shrink the car’s heft at higher speeds, as well as improving low-speed agility. The Phant’s air springs feature bigger chambers than on any previous Rolls, and the tyres are specially developed Continentals whose structure incorporates 2kg of sound absorbent material. There’s 6mm-thick, dual-layer double glazing windows all-round. The body-in-white features the largest-ever cast aluminium joints to enhance sound insulation, and overall the Phantom carries more than 130kg of sound-deadening material. There’s double skin alloy within the floor and on the front bulkhead, into which a foam and felt layer is squeezed. There’s more insulating material in the headliner, doors, and boot cavity. All of this contributes to the car’s 2,560kg kerbweight (2,610kg if you go for the long ’un, which adds 220mm to the wheelbase), but that’s surely an irelevance. As well as monitoring body and wheel acceleration and steering inputs, a stereo camera mounted in the windscreen reads the road ahead to effectively erase surface unpleasantness before it’s allowed to upset the occupants’ Dom Perignon. The new Phantom also features so many assistance systems that the heart of its electronic architecture is the single largest component produced by the BMW Group. 2.Range Rover £81,785 – £177,485 Arguably the definitive big, luxury SUV. Frequently imitated, but rarely bettered or even equalled, the Range Rover has been around since the early Seventies. And even though that means it’s only a couple years shy of its fiftieth birthday, the Rangie is still only in its fourth generation. Admittedly the fact the first-gen (later known as the ‘Classic’) lasted for more than two decades skews that figure a bit. But still… The current car was launched in 2012. It debuted a new aluminium monocoque that cost the company a billion quid or so to develop. So even though it’s bigger than the car it replaced, it’s lighter by in some cases almost half a tonne. That means it’s faster, tangibly better to drive and more efficient. And with the 2018 facelift comes even more efficiency, thanks to the introduction of the P400e plug-in hybrid, which pairs a 296bhp, four-cylinder petrol engine with a 114bhp electric motor for 64g/km of CO2, a claimed 101mpg and 31 miles of all-electric range. The P400e replaces the SDV6 Hybrid (a conventional, non-plug-in hybrid with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel and a small electric motor) in the line-up, but V6s and V8s in petrol and diesel (with up to 557bhp for the flagship, 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol) remain available. All are linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive with the deeply clever ‘Terrain Response’ technology that gives the Rangie its peerless off-road ability. Nowadays the Rangie doesn’t just compete with other big SUVs, but conventional luxury saloons like the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8. It has to rival those cars – traditionally their makers’ technological flagships – on every level. Which is why the new car offers higher levels of luxury and cleverer tech than we’ve yet seen from JLR. For the facelift it’s added the dual-touchscreen infotainment setup as debuted in the Range Rover Velar, ‘Pixel’ headlamps with 144 LEDs and four laser diodes each for more than 500m of visibility and much besides. We’re promised a new seat design - adjustable up to 24 (!) ways - makes the Rangie “more comfortable than ever” in the front, and that the ‘Executive Class Seating’ option for rear-seat passengers gives “the impression of a luxurious wraparound lounge-like interior”. Exterior changes include a new grille and bumper, with larger vent blades. At the side the lower accents and vents have been reworked, while at the rear the updated bumper features integrated tailpipes across all derivatives. Long- and short-wheelbase options are available, with prices starting at £79,595 for the former and £112,900 for the latter, and rising to £177,030 for V8-engined examples of Rangies fettled by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division. 1.Mercedes-Benz S-Class Without a doubt the benchmark big luxury saloon, the one Audi, BMW, Lexus, Cadillac and even Jaguar and Maserati must define themselves by and be measured against. This car defines the sector and is the one all others must topple. The latest A8 and 7 Series are both much newer than the S and thus have some exceptionally clever tech on-board, but while both are excellent cars in their own right, neither is quite as special as the big Merc. A facelift in 2017 – this generation’s last before it’s replaced by an entirely new S-Class – gave many new things. Chief among them new engines, Merc’s latest-generation in-line six-cylinder diesels and petrols, plus a plug-in hybrid and the S63 AMG’s V8 bi-turbo petrol. The rare-groove S65 is no more, but you can still get a V12-engined S-Class in the form of the super-luxe, super-rare and super-expensive £180,000 Mercedes-Maybach S650. This update also gave the S-Class an array of semi-autonomous driving technology like Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Lane Change Assist and Remote Parking Assist, most of which debuted in the E-Class. But to make sure the S-Class kept its crown as the techiest Merc, it got a few of its own too. The main one is a kind of active cruise control that, as well as sensing and maintaining gaps to other cars, knows to slow you for roundabouts, corners and tolls using GPS. Of course that particular system has been rolled out to other Mercs now, but it’s reasonable to expect much cleverness from the new S-Class, which could be revealed as soon as this year. Because this particular era of S-Class is so near the end of its life, Mercedes has massively cut back on the number of trim levels/equipment combinations if offers. Now there’s just one trim for the non-AMGs – ‘Grand Edition’ – and only the cheapest S350d is available with the short-wheelbase.

One of the first electric SUVs, it not only trumps the original F-PACE which it supersedes, but it’s also in strong competition with Tesla’s Model X (also a stand-out electric SUV). The I-PACE is hands down the strongest Tesla alternative on the market. The Tesla Model X will set you back a minimum of £79,000, whereas the Jag I-PACE starts at just £63,000. But how does it actually stand up to the Tesla? Jaguar’s new I-PACE electric is taking on the Tesla Model X Very well it seems. Auto Express have suggested the I-PACE can transform the Jaguar brand – this is high praise indeed… But considering the car’s luxury feel, spacious interior and futuristic additional features (there’s a setting that allows you to replace the absence of engine noise) we feel comments like this are well deserved. Not only that, but it has a top speed of 125 mph. It’s no slouch. To conclude, it’s the first electric car to really take on the Model X and survive on all fronts. If you are going down the electric SUV route, it’s an important vehicle to consider. Hyundai Kona Electric In early 2018, the Hyundai Kona Electric became known as something of a game changer in the auto industry. Before its release, you had to pay upwards of £60,000 to own a new car that will go that far before needing a re-juice. The Hyundai Kona Electric starts at around £30,000 – at just half the price of the Jaguar iPace, you can see why they’re calling it a game changer! The 2018 Hyundai Kona Electric in all its efficient, long range glory Range aside, at a weight of 1.7 tonnes, it’s a bit heavy and not the most practical car – and it doesn’t feel quite as fast as many other slicker EVs. But it’s got all the features you’d want in 2019 – including a charging pad with higher-end models. The handling isn’t the best but it’s comfortable, and with 300 miles of range for £30,000 it’s generally hard to quibble! This one should definitely be on your short list. Price range: from £25,000 Distance on a full charge: 200-300 miles Advantages: Futuristic looks Excellent value Incredibly high mileage for the price Disadvantages: Poor ride, mediocre handling and it’s heavy Less spacious and more impractical that the iPace and Tesla Model X Expensive to service and insure 3. Kia e-Niro The new fully-electric Kia e-Niro has the potential to completely change the electric car market in the same way as the Hyundai Kona Electric has. In fact the Kia E-Niro shares many components with its Hyundai compatriot. For example its motors and batteries are identical. Kia claims it will do an impressive official range of 282 miles between charges and all that at a price that’s around half the cost of many of its rivals… £32.995 to be exact. In real world driving conditions the Kia managed 253 miles in one charge – a staggering result. That’s further than a Tesla Model S, and double the VW e-Golf (which is in the same price bracket). The ride is impressive. You’ll get a smooth, easy drive with plenty of punch from the 201bhp electric motor. Handling will never be quite as good as a petrol or diesel equivalent (mainly because of the heavy electric motor) but this electric Kia handles more than well enough around corners and in town. The Kia e-Niro could be a game changer in the industry due to its high mileage range and low cost. Winner! So what is the difference between this and the Hyundai Kona? Well for a start the handling is slightly better (even though Kia is slightly heavier). The interior of the Kia is slightly higher quality than the Kona too and you’ll get a better driving position. There’s also more space in the back seats. For the price it’s very hard to argue that the Kia E-Niro shouldn’t be on your wishlist. The downside is that at the time of writing (March 2019), the Kia E-Niro isn’t actually available on the market to buy. Though we can expect to see it on roads towards the end of the year. A winner. Price range: starts at £32.995 (depending on spec/ finance choice) Distance on a full charge: claimed 282 miles, real world 253 miles! Advantages: Bargain price! 7 year Kia warranty Quiet Incredible range! Disadvantages: Average performance, average handling Heavy car 4. Mercedes EQC The Mercedes EQC is the first in an all-electric range coming from Mercedes in 2019 . It’s a totally bespoke, built-for-purpose electric vehicle – not a re-boot of an existing model. The EQC should be able to get you a whopping 280 miles on a full charge and the battery can be charged from flat to 80% full in just 40 minutes. It has two electric motors (for both sets of wheels) and will do 0-60 in just 5.2 seconds. As well as being speedy, it’s worth noting that this is a super-luxurious model, as you’d expect from Mercedes. It has ‘metallic textiles’ and inside it looks like something straight out of a futuristic sci-fi film. Not surprisingly, it is not cheap. It’s likely to cost you from around £55,000 to £75,000 with added specs, trims and other options. The Mercedes EQC at the Paris Motor Show 2018. Hello future! It’s more expensive than the Hyundai Kona Electric of course, but given you get two crystal-clear Mercedes ‘infotainment screens’ and speech recognition software built-in, it’s probably more than worth it to feel like you’re living in the future. It’s amazing to look at too. Bonus. Price range: from £55,000 Distance on a full charge: 250-300 miles Advantages: Luxury exterior and interior Spacious (thanks to being an SUV-style vehicle) 2 x electric engines for speed and performance Disadvantages: Expensive There may be limited stock in early 2019 5. BMW i3 If any electric car can credibly described as a ‘Tesla killer’ it would be this one. Top Gear named it the best small premium EV you can buy and you can see why. Its stunning looks never fail to impress. The i3 has been around for more than four years now, yet still manages to look forward thinking. You’ll get to 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and reach a top speed just shy of 100mph (93mph to be precise). BMW’s flagship BMW i3, one of the very best electric cars to buy in 2019 There are various models available, some with more oomph under the hood and others with more range. With the new and improved i3S (Sport Edition) due out soon, the i3 has to be top of the pile of the best electric cars. Price range: £30,925 – £46,595 Distance on a full charge: 80 – 125 miles Advantages: Speed Build quality Futuristic looks Disadvantages: Expensive to service and insure Poor low speed ride 6. Tesla Model 3 The Tesla model 3 is the electric car everyone is talking about. Stunning, futuristic and reasonably priced, this electric is a smaller, cheaper (half the price) version of the Model X (which we’ve also reviewed here). It is a vital part of the Tesla’s master plan to provide and sell an ecosystem of sustainable products – but there’s a small spanner in the works. They won’t be widely available in the UK and Europe until at least mid-2019. That’s a lot of waiting around… Tesla’s latest – the ‘Model 3’ That being said, there are still a fair few to buy on the market (whether new or used) and Tesla recently announced a successful ramp up in production. Not only that, but in October 2018, Elon Musk also suggested a newer, cheaper Model 3 may be just round the corner . All in all, there may be more available to purchase in 2019 than some auto pessimists suggested earlier in the year, so those waiting lists could be shorter than at first thought. But whatever the supply situation, the auto press has been singing the Model 3’s praises since it was first announced. This thing is quick, it’ll do 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds while the more expensive P100D version does it in an amazing 2.7 seconds and it drives much better than many of its rivals. Not only that, but it drives up to 350 miles on a single charge which thumps many of its power-hungry rivals. It’s also full of cutting edge tech, you start the thing with a credit card you ‘wave around’ for a start! Another benefit to owning a Tesla is the potential for autonomous driving. An ‘autopilot’ option will give you all the cameras you’ll need in the future for some slick, autonomous functions. It may not be the cheapest or the most unique, but it’s still the one to beat for futuristic tech. Price range: £30,000 – £38,000 [TBC] Distance on a full charge: 300-350 miles Advantages: You’ll impress your friends! Full of tech (it’s a Tesla after all) Very quick Disadvantages: There could be a lengthy waiting list May draw unwanted attention Elon Musk may not be to everyone’s taste 7. Volkswagen e-Golf The historic e-Golf was the first ever VW Golf to drop the internal combustion engine and go 100% electric. If you have ever driven a petrol or diesel Golf you’ll know how solid, dependable and fun-to-drive they are. The electric version doesn’t differ from a regular Golf too much, other than the fact it’s got a 24.2kW lithium ion battery between the axles. Going electric gives you speedier acceleration, but generally a lower top speed (87mph for this Golf). VW’s eGolf. An updated electric design for an ever-popular model All the internal goodies are top notch, as we’ve come to expect from the Volkswagen Golf range . A sturdy mid-range electric winner! Price range: £17,570 – £34,095 Distance on a full charge: 100 – 118 miles Advantages: Comfortable ride and handling Practical Cheaper to run than the BMW i3 Disadvantages: High monthly PCP payments Slightly dreary interior 8. Audi E-Tron Quattro The Audi E-Tron Quatro (not officially on the market until early ‘ish’ 2019) is without doubt an electric car you should have on your radar. It’s Audi’s flagship electric SUV, taking on the Jaguar I-PACE and Tesla’s Model X. Its 248-mile real-world range means it comes in at a little under the Model X’s roughly 300 mile range but with a charging time of less than 30 minutes on 150kW you won’t need to stop long to go further. The Audi E-Tron Quattro (Coming in 2019) The E-Tron will manage 0-62mph in under 6 seconds and has a top speed of 124mph, like many electrics it’s extremely nippy off the mark – especially for an SUV of this size and weight. It also comes with a “Range Mode” which will allow you to reduce the electricity consumption and travel further by taking power away from things like the air conditioning (not required much outside of summer in the UK). Advantages: Be an owner of the first ever Audi electric Audi build quality Full of tech Good range Disadvantages: Not released until Jan 2019 Not fully tested and reviewed yet 9. Renault Zoe We’ve chosen to look at the Renault Zoe electric car as they start at just £14,245 (with a Government grant) making it the cheapest EV on the market in the UK. The only downside to that low initial cost is the slightly odd fact that you have to lease the battery at an additional cost. Renault’s Zoe, the budget-friendly electric car for 2019 You can buy the car outright (Zoe i model) but it’ll set you back more upfront. The benefit to a lease however is that Renault will replace the battery free of charge if the range drops below 75% of what it was when bought new. Quite an attractive offer with anyone familiar with owning an old mobile phone. The Zoe has the biggest driving range of any sub 30K EV so if range is a worry, the Zoe could be for you. Tesla Model X The Tesla Model X is one of Elon Musk’s most successfully adopted electric cars yet. It was designed to crush the opposition in the SUV/ MPV markets and during its three-or-so-year-reign it did a pretty good job. It’s been around since December 2015. Back then there were basically no rivals in the market, but now we have direct competitors like the Jaguar i-Pace, Audi E-Tron Quattro and even Tesla’s own Model 3. So how does the Model X stand up now? Well, the new 100D version sill packs a punch! For a start, the falcon wing doors will always give it a wow factor and for that alone, it feels like something out of Back to the Future (available to buy in the present)… Tesla’s popular ‘Model X’ It’s super-quiet to drive, like most electrics and has HUGE punch on the acceleration front – reaching 0-60mph in a blistering 5.2 seconds. For a car that weighs 200kg, it’s seriously impressive. Again, all new Tesla’s come equipped with Tesla Autopilot (one of the best driving assistance packages on the market). Thinking about stopping distance? Tesla has you covered by locking in automation to slow you down if required. It can also change lanes for you. Have named the Nissan Leaf their Electric Car of the Year for 2018 and it’s hard to argue with them. Now in it’s second generation, the original Leaf was launched back in 2010 – making it the world’s first mass-market EV model. Top of the tree of electric cars in 2019? The Nissan Leaf There have been many improvements made since the first generation edition. The new massive battery range sits at a proven 168 miles and the engine produces much more power at 150bhp. Price: £21,990 (Including Government grant) Distance on a full charge: between 168 – 235 miles (top of the range) Advantages: Cheap to own Very quiet and smooth drive Spacious Disadvantages: Boxy design is a bit over-used and boring Not many options beyond the standard spec Awkward driving position 12. 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hyundai may not have been the first brand that popped into your head when thinking about electric cars, but they should be considered. The Ioniq is key to Hyundai’s plan to produce a range of 22 green cars as soon as 2020. This model is also available as a petrol/ electric and plug-in petrol electric hybrids, but it’s the fully electric model we’re focused on here. Hyundai? Not a brand normally associated with electric cars, but the Ioniq is a great fresh pick for 2019 This car has a modest maximum range of 174 miles and a super-smooth feel and ride, but it can be a bumpy drive when dealing with rough roads. Price: £28,995 (Including Government grant) Distance on a full charge: between 168 – 235 miles (top of the range) Advantages: Plush exterior and interior Spacious Low running costs Disadvantages: Options on specs are limiting A bumpy ride on less-smooth roads No ultra fast charging You may disagree with their evaluation but the sheer number of electric vehicles on sale and in the pipeline is quite amazing. Electric cars are already a mainstay on the roads, with a growing number of all-electric models being available to buy right now . The electric effect is now in full force, with established brands committing to offering a wider range of pure electric cars in the future, while those who depend heavily on diesel are seeing sales falter - with a deadline of 2035 in regions like the UK to halt sales in combustion cars. Prices are falling, models are diversifying and it's all going hand-in-hand with increased investment and roll-out of charging networks . But what electric cars are coming? Let's take a closer look at what you can expect to see hitting the roads in the next few years. JEEP Jeep Wrangler BEV Concept Jeep has teased an all-electric Wrangler. Thanks to a site looking forward to the future of Jeep , we now know that the brand is looking at an electric offroader. Not much is declared about the plans, but it does say more will be revealed at the Easter Jeep Safari. HYUNDAI Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai has teased images of its forthcoming Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 is said to be based on the Hyundai 45 concept that was shown at the 2019 Frankfurt motorshow. It's expected to be a new E-GMP based battery electric vehicle and promised to get a world premiere in February 2021. KIA Kia future electric cars Kia has confirmed that there will be a new next-gen battery electric vehicle announced in early 2021. It will sit on the E-GMP platform, have a crossover-inspired design and over 500km of range. It will be the first launch under the new Kia branding and we suspect it will the car internally known as the Kia CV and closely related to the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5. RENAULT Renault 5 Prototype When in doubt, roll in nostalgia. That seems to be the approach that Renault wants to take, showing off an prototype of an electric Renault 5. We've all got fond memories of this classic, and it would go head-to-head with the Mini Electric and the Honda e as a compact EV for urban dwellers. Please Renault, please, please, please reinvent the Renault 5. MOTOR1 Audi Q4 e-tron Audi unveiled two versions of the Q4 concept - the e-tron and the Sportback . It's very much following the lead of the original e-tron model, offering two styles of electric SUV in smaller sizes than the existing model. That will expand the range towards Q5 size. A range of 279 miles is claimed from an 82kWh battery for the Quattro models, a rear-wheel drive only model should hit 310 miles. We're expecting to see more of the Q4 e-tron later in 2020, with the Sportback due in 2021 - and already spotted in camouflage out testing. BMW BMW iX BMW has announced its flagship electric SUV, the BMW iX . This is the production model of the long-tease iNext, now appearing more like an electric X5 in terms of size. It promises a number of configurations, with 300 mile range, all-wheel drive and a 500ps model. There's a refreshed interior design too, so it feels like something of a continuation of the BMW i3. HYUNDAI Hyundai Kona Electric Hyundai has announced a refreshed version of the Kona Electric , due on the roads in 2021. While the underpinnings remain similar - it will still give impressive 300 mile range and come in two battery sizes - there's been a refresh to the interior and the exterior to make this car look a little more like an EV. No word on pricing, but we expect it to compeitive. GMC Hummer EV There's an electric Hummer coming that promises to be a capable as combustion version. Hummer is throwing in loads of tech and loads of power, wanting to rival the Tesla Cybertruck. There's 350 miles of range promised and a super-fast 350kW charging, while the motors will deliver 1000hp and a 0-60 time of 3 seconds. There's full visibility with cameras under the body, as well as the ability to drive diagonally, thanks to all-wheel steering. Production won't start until late 2021. DACIA Dacia Spring The Dacia Spring is now an official prodcution car. Aimed at the affordable end of the market, it has a range of 140 miles, rugged urban looks, and 44hp. It's designed as a mass market EV for city dwellers. There's no word on pricing, and we also don't know if it's coming to the UK. POLESTAR Polestar Precept The Polestar Precept was a concept design, but Polestar has announced that it's going to put it into production. It's going to be aimed at the premium end of the market, with grand coupe lines and the promise not just of zero tailpipe emissions - but of an environmentally conscious approach to all the materials used in the car. BMW BMW i4 The BMW i4 is due for launch in 2020 and will sit on the same fifth-gen eDrive system as the BMW i3X and the iX. The model is what might expect from a BMW Gran Coupe, but with massive teeth and the details of the eDrive system have already been confirmed. There will be an 80kWh battery that will charge at 150kW and give a range up to 370 miles. The motors will produce 530bhp, giving a 0-62mph time of 4 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. It looks and sounds exactly what you want your mid-range BMW saloon to produce. It will be on the roads in 2021 - but there's also been a tease of an M Performance model . VW VW ID.4 The VW ID.4 is official, the German company's second electric model, this time in compact SUV form. There will be several versions of the ID.4 with 310 miles on the top model, starting as a rear-wheel drive model and expanding to be all-wheel drive in the future. There's no price or exact date on the ID.4, but we can expect to see it in 2021. POCKET-LINT Porsche Macan Porsche has announced that the Macan is going to move to being pure electric - meaning that Porsche will have an electric SUV. It will join the luxury ranks of SUV EVs with a performance leaning, using the 800-volt system Porsche is using in the Taycan, and sitting on the PPE platform adapted from Audi. Not a lot else is being said at the moment, but the shifting of the Macan to electric shows real diversification of the Porsche portfolio. It is expected on the roads in 2022. FORD Ford has promised that there will be an electric F-150 on the roads in 2022. That's going to hit the US market in the big way. Ford hasn't said much about its plans, except that it doesn't want to compromise on the performance that the F-150 offers. SKODA Skoda Enyaq iV Skoda's first electric SUV is the Enyaq iV and it's going to be closely related to the VW ID.4, both sitting on the same platform. Three battery capacities and five power levels mean a range of options, although not all will come to all markets. Prices will start from £33.450 in the UK for the 242 miles range model. It will be on the road in 2021. NISSAN Nissan Ariya Nissan's latest electric car is the Ariya . It was originally unveiled as a concept in 2019, but has made its way to production practically unchanged. It's an SUV, sitting in the space between the Qashqai and the X-Trail. The Ariya will offer two battery sizes and a number of different motor configurations, as well as options for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. With prices starting from an estimated £40,000, it's expected on the roads in 2021. BMW BMW iX3 No longer a concept, the BWM iX3 is the electric version of the X3, meaning you can how get an emission-free BMW SUV. It's a major step, with BMW moving into the mainstream, offering 285 miles from an 80kWh battery. It will first be launching in China 2020, with global roll-out in 2021. VAUXHALL Vauxhall Mokka-e Vauxhall has announced the second-gen Mokka , launching an electric version from the off. It will have a 50kW battery and promises over 200 miles of range. There will be 100kWh charging and a refreshed design, showing the new face of Vauxhall. It's an exciting change, slotting right into the competitive crossover space and it's great to see another EV in this space. It will be available from late summer 2020, price to be confirmed. AUDI Audi Artemis Audi has setup a special working group, called Artemis , with the aim of creating a highly-efficient electric car. The new group has been designed to work autonomously with plenty of freedom, with a target date of 2024 for a new vehicle. It's being headed up by Alex Hitzinger, formerly working on the Apple car project, and previously with some of the biggest names in motorsports. We're expecting something that pops out of the Audi template here, so watch this space. SAIC MOTORS MG 5 MG has said that it's bringing an electric estate car to the UK as soon as it can open showrooms again. Currently there are no electric estates so this fills a small gap in the options available, likely to appeal to those needing accessible load space and dog walkers. It looks to be based on the Chinese Roewe Ei5, and we're expecting a 52.5kWh battery and range of 260 miles. BMW BMW i7 BMW has confirmed that the next-generation of BMW 7 Series will include an all-electric version. It's not going to be exclusively electric as there will be petrol, diesel and hybrid versions too - but there's talk of two versions, the i7 and the i7S. The latter is expect to have a 120kWh battery, 660hp and a range of 320 miles. BMW is serious about electric cars and there's a lot in the pipeline - the BMW i7 will take things to the luxury level. RENAULT Renault Twingo ZE Renault has made one of its cutest cars electric in the Twingo ZE . This compact urban car is designed to keep the price down, with a 22kWh battery - good for 250km (143 miles) - and a 60kW motor, that will whisk you from 0-30mph in 4 seconds, perfect for city driving. There's no word on the price, but we've already heard it's not coming to the UK. FIAT Fiat 500 The Fiat 500 has been relaunched as an electric model, getting a redesign over the 2007 model that's been really popular. Now there's a 42kWh battery and 87kW motor, claiming 0-62mph in 9 seconds, but 0-30 in 3.1 seconds. It supports charging up to 85kW and will give you 199 miles of range (WLTP). There's four seats, lots of options (including convertible) and it's available to order from £29,000. TESLA Tesla Cybertruck If you wanted a vision of the future, then Tesla may have delivered it. Unveiling the Cybertruck , this is Elon Musk's promised pickup truck, with dual cab and then a loading bay at the rear. The Cybertruck is eye-catching with its unusual angular design. On the practical front it will come in three different versions with 250+, 300+ or 500+ miles of range, with the top model, a tri-motor version promising a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds. Tesla doesn't do things by half. It's available for pre-order now, deliveries expected from 2021. VW GROUP VW ID. Space Vizzion VW had long said it was going to have a full family of ID electric cars and the Space Vizzion is what you get when you pull together an electric estate or station wagon. It's quite the looker we can't help thinking and while many are focusing on SUV or crossover models, the lower and longer effect that you get from a wagon could do wonders for the performance of this EV, not to mention the boot space. It's a concept for now, but we're expecting this electric Passat (did we say that?) to be available in 2021. VW is saying 300 miles of range which isn't quite the 600 miles you'll get from the diesel, but we don't have to drive that far to walk the dog, so we'll all cope. FISKER Fisker Ocean Fisker is trying to shake things up with a range of luxury electric cars. The Fisker Ocean got an official unveiling in January 2020 - although it's not due on the road until 2022. It will use recycled and vegan materials, have an 80kWh battery and a range of 250-300 miles. Fisker wants to compete with Tesla with a 0-60 time of less than 3 seconds, but the big unique feature is the option for a full-length solar roof to help charge the battery. POCKET-LINT Electric Range Rover There's a fully electric Range Rover in the works, going under the name of Road Rover, because it's going to be slightly more road-centric than some of the other Range Rovers. It's supposed to sit between the Velar and the Evoque in terms of size, so it sounds a lot like the Jaguar i-Pace. Not much is currently known about what it might offer or when it might appear. POCKET-LINT Seat El-Born Seat is joining the electric car movement with the El-Born , named after a region of Barcelona. The car sits on VW's MEB platform and is due to arrive in 2020, getting its first appearance at the Geneva International Motorshow in 2019. Seat is looking at a 420km range (260 miles), with a 0-62kpm time of 7.5 seconds. There will be 204PS from the 150kW motor and a 62kWh battery. CUPRA Cupra El-Born Cupra - now a separate brand from Seat - has its own version of the el-Born. It also has the same name, Cupra El-Born , which doesn't really aid its cause of being seen as a separate entity. It has sporty looks, a custom chassis control and claims of 310 miles from the 82kW battery. POCKET-LINT Byton M-Byte Byton originally showed off an SUV EV concept , with broad ambitions for a start-up in the EV segment. That has now matured into the Byton M-Byte, with production getting started and looking to get on the road in mid-2020 - in China at least. The price of €54,000 sounds fairly aggressive, but there's little telling what verison that's for. There are two- or all-wheel drive options, with the latter claiming a 270 mile range. Most of the conversation is about the huge 43-inch display curving across the interior, however. POCKET-LINT Lotus Evija The Lotus Type 130 or Evija as it is called, is an all-electric hypercar limited to just 130 models, but paving the way for future production cars from Lotus. It has been designed for maximum performance, with 2000PS and a 70kWh battery that aims to give 250 miles of range. However, the car will offer blistering acceleration, and while Lotus hasn't given final figures, it'll hit 186mph in under 9 seconds. This car will cost £2 million pounds and preorders are open, asking for a £250,000 deposit. POCKET-LINT Lightyear One The Lightyear One is a luxury saloon that adds solar panels to the roof and bonnet of the car, aiming to give the owner a boost from the sun all the time - even when driving. While much of the car is conventional for an EV, the additional solar panels will give a 12km range boost per hour (in good light). That might mean free charging while parked at the beach - although in winter you'll have to charge it more. However, the asking price for the limited run Lightyear One will be €119,000, so going solar comes at a price. POCKET-LINT Audi e-tron GT concept Unveiled at the LA Auto Show 2018, the Audi e-tron GT Concept showcases Audi's future electric sportscar. This is a four seater, powered by the same batteries as the existing e-tron models and sharing a lot with the Porsche Taycan. Audi has been quite open about the co-development of the e-tron GT and the Taycan, and we're expecting a lot of technical similarities. The performances stats currently suggest an 800V charging system, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a range of 248 miles. There's a vegan interior on the Concept model, with Audi saying that it wants to push the eco message even further. The Audi e-tron GT Concept will be hitting the roads in 2020. POCKET-LINT Rivian RS1 Rivian wants to join the EV movement with this offroader of its own. It's designed to tackle the great outdoors, boasting a wading depth of 3ft and 0-60mph time of 3 seconds. Why you'd need to go so fast offroad, we'll never know. Rivian is a newcomer to the EV space, showing off its cars for the first time at the LA Auto Show in 2018 - there's also a truck/pickup version - and is available for pre-order for a $1000 deposit. We'd be tempted to wait until these are actually on the road before parting with any money. POCKET-LINT BMW i5 BMW unveiled the i Vision Dynamics concept coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017. It previews a mid-sized saloon car, in the BMW i range that's likely to be called i5 when it launches in 2021. It's bigger than the company's 3-Series saloon, but smaller than a 5-Series and designed to sit between the i3 and i8 in the electric BMW i range. The family-sized car will be capable of reaching 60mph in under 4 seconds, go on to a speed over 120mph and be able to last up to 372 miles on a single charge. Let's hope it arrives with the same futuristic design displayed on the concept version. POCKET-LINT Faraday Future FF91 A huge question mark hangs over the striking FF91. The company has been through ups and downs, but managed to showcase pre-production drivable models in 2020. The FF-91 has a huge 126-inch wheelbase, but that makes for a huge interior. The panoramic sunroof, rear and side windows use Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Glass, which passengers can tap on to tint the windows and let less light in. Don't expect to get a conventional rear-view mirror inside, as Faraday Future has replaced it with a widescreen monitor instead. The 1,050bhp electric power unit will accelerate to 60mph in 2.39-seconds and will have a driving range between 378 and 435 miles. Faraday Future says the battery can be completely recharged in 1 hour. POCKET-LINT ID Buzz and Cargo Concept The ID Buzz is due to go on sale in 2022. It references VW's historic Microbus and will able to seat up to eight people, with an interior that can be constantly changed around. There's also a Cargo Concept, which may well get launched before any passenger model arrives, with the rising demand for clean first and last mile transport. Two electric motors will give the ID Buzz a total power output of 369bhp to propel it to 60mph in around 5-seconds. It will be limited to a top speed of 100mph, will have four-wheel drive and a 372 mile driving range. You will be able to recharge the battery to 80 per cent, which VW says will be enough for 298 miles of travel, in 30 minutes.
