What is so unique about Tesla Model 3?

The most impressive electric car this side of a Porsche Taycan. Fresh design, a sense of humor, and backed up by Superchargers Overview What is it? The Tesla Model 3 is an American four-door saloon car with rear- or -four-wheel drive, seating for five people at a pinch, and a touchscreen inside. Sure, it’s all-electric, but it hardly sounds like A Verified Big Deal, does it? But the Tesla Model 3 is one of the most important big deals of the 21st Century so far. This is Tesla’s long-awaited affordable entry-level car, designed to take on the best-selling likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class, not to mention their slow-off-the-mark electric cousins. And thanks to Tesla’s viral, household name status and the ambition of the car’s features, the Model 3 has become a phenomenon. It sits below the Model S saloon in the range, and in Standard Range Plus guise, is priced from £40,490. That gets you rear-wheel drive, and a claimed 278 miles of range between visits to a public Supercharger, or your home wall box. Above that in the ‘3’ pecking order lie two all-wheel-drive versions: the Long Range (good for up to 360 miles), and the Performance, which sacrifices a few miles of range but will outrun a Lamborghini Huracán up to the national speed limit. Something for everyone, then… These model lines are correct at the time of writing (January 2021) but Tesla has a habit of creating and killing off trim levels willy-nilly – here today, gone tomorrow. And the price has long since crept away from the mid-£30k target once-vaunted. Not that it stopped the Model 3 from becoming Britain’s best-selling electric car in 2020. As per all Teslas – and most electric cars – the Model 3 is powered by a slab of lithium-ion batteries mounted on the car’s floor, where they’re best protected from a crash and helpfully low to keep the center of gravity in check. That means you get a second boot (frunk or froot, choose your front-biased cargo bay term) in the nose, which is handy for stowing mucky charging cables. Chances are you’ll have heard fragments of what makes Teslas so interesting floating around the internet. Giant touchscreens, funny Easter egg content like games and built-in Netflix, and something about them being able to drive themselves while you take a nap or watch Tiger King. Let’s get on with saluting Tesla for the truth in that, and dispelling the myths the Californian brand’s cult-like following would have you believe. Driving What is it like on the road? Yes, you do have to do this bit yourself. All UK-spec Model 3s come with ‘Autopilot’ built-in as standard, declares Tesla’s website, and you’ll have visions of setting the nav for Saint-Tropez, bedding down for the night, and waking up on the riviera. Not yet, by a long stretch. Autopilot is merely an umbrella term for adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-following assistant, and pedestrian-avoidance steering. All terribly useful and well-integrated, but nothing you can’t find in a BMW 3 Series and co. To get the full suite of Tesla cleverness, you’ll need to spend £6,800 on the Full Self-Driving Package, which purports to control the car entirely on the motorway (though no longer without your hands on the steering wheel) to automatically find and enter or exit parking spaces, and even summon the car to your location if, say, you want to avoid getting caught in the rain when leaving the shops. Welcome to The Future. Splendid idea, but in execution, not quite there. The Model 3’s automatic lane-changes on the motorway vary from hesitant and haphazard, causing other drivers to be wary of the Tesla rather drunkenly dawdling nearby. Similarly, the Summon feature is a great party trick but better suited to sprawling American parking lots than your average provincial high street. We’ll bet you end up just taking over and doing it the old-fashioned way, using the supercomputer between your ears. Having saved you a few quid on the tech, next, let’s do the same with speed. Trust us, you really don’t need the 450bhp-strong Performance. The £56,490 dual-motor range-topper is supercar fast and that’s one heck of a punchline, but the acceleration is so vivid it’s verging on uncomfortable for passengers. We’ve got into the habit of turning down the acceleration from ‘Sport’ to ‘Chill’ mode, which sort of defeats the point. Imagine how rapid it feels to make us lot at Top Gear say we’d make do with the slower one. Aspirin, anyone? Even the entry-level Standard Range Plus will go from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, silkily speeding away in silence from the Porsche Cayman who’s still changing gear and building up his revs. It’s effortlessly, instantly rapid. The other reason you might not want quite so much poke is that, despite Tesla’s best efforts, this isn’t a true sports saloon. Sure, the CoG is snake-low and there’s plenty of grips, but the remote, synthetic steering feels like it’s come off an early Xbox rig and the brakes are mushy. The Performance can be coaxed into powerslides, but you can sense the sheer mass heaving around in direction changes and the Model 3 feels out of sorts when pushed as hard as the Crème aus Cremes of German performance metal. As a seven-tenths car with effortless pace though, it’s sensational. Shall we talk range? Teslas tend to excel here, and the Model 3 keeps up the tradition. In a recent winter test of the 2021-spec Model 3 Standard range, we were headed for 210 miles on a charge, with a power consumption of 4.7 miles per kWh knocking the VW ID3 and Nissan Leaf’s 2.7 mpkWh into a cocked hat. Teslas are pretty range-anxiety proof, due to the proliferation of the Supercharger network, its speed of charging, and how efficiently the car uses its battery reserves. A new heat pump from the Model Y has eaten into front boot space in the latest models, but it means even less guilt from cranking up the heater in cold weather. Of course, you can save yourself the bother by pre-conditioning the car via the touchscreen calendar, or your smartphone, which can also act as the car’s key. The low-speed ride is leagues better than it used to be in, say, an early Model S, and the rolling refinement is predictably serene. But handling and speed – that’s all a bit 20th Century, compared to Tesla’s true forte: the interior tech. On the inside Layout, finish, and space Staying true to the Model S’s maxi-minimalist interior design, the Model 3 is just as stark. The dash is nothing but a slab of wood, a full-width air vent, and a 15.4-inch touchscreen, landscape orientated, rather than the larger portrait screen in the S. From where you sit, on a slightly narrow but otherwise comfortable chair, the screen appears to hover in mid-air. Scour the cabin and the only physical buttons you’ll find are two unmarked scroll wheels on the steering wheel (left blank so Tesla can change their functions if needs be via software updates), regular for the electric windows, a button for the hazard lights above your head and a button on the grab handle to open each door, although there’s a physical lever below that in case the electrics catch a cold. Space in the back seats is fine for anyone up to six-foot-tall, a bit cramped beyond that, but it’s worth it for the endless view out through the full-length sunroof that wraps right around and behind your head. It’s because of that infinity roof that the 3 isn’t a hatchback, so you have to make do with a notchback boot, although split-folding rear seats mean you can fit longer objects in, too. Fallen on hard times? Drop the back seats and double blow-up mattress slots in perfectly – some companies make bespoke ones that pack up neatly in the boot. Overall, the build quality and materials are a step behind the established premium European players, but by keeping things super-simple, it’s never really an issue. Acres of plastic switchgear and multiple screens and sockets would have only highlighted Tesla's shortcomings. Multiple test cars we’ve tried have suffered from bugbears like sticking windows and misaligned trim, so check a Model 3 carefully before you accept delivery. As it is, everything is dominated by that central screen. Seriously – you even have to find a sub-sub menu to adjust the steering column reach and rake. The general idea is that the quarter closest to the driver is dedicated to information and controls you might need while driving, including a visual representation of your autopilot situation and shortcuts to the trip computer, charge status, etc. Oh, and your current speed. The Model 3 would do well to include a head-up display for such vitals. The rest is dominated by a map or whatever you want to overlay, such as your radio or music streaming, climate control settings, and phone status. Alternatively, you can dive into the settings menu (best to do this when stationary) and have fun tweaking your steering weight, how much re-gen braking you want, and if you’d like the turn signal to make a fart sound. Really. Although the basic driving controls couldn’t be simpler, this isn’t a car you fully understand in the first five minutes. Like a new smartphone, you need to commit some time to learn the shortcuts, locating the settings you might need, and engraining them in your brain. That said, the touchscreen operation itself is fabulous. The graphics are industry-leading for sharpness, the reaction times are iPad-like and the menus aren’t complicated stacks of multi-layered mayhem. Got everything set just so? Good. Now you can have fun exploring some of Tesla’s ‘Easter eggs’ – modes that are there for no reason other than to make you and your passengers laugh. Modes like the Mars button that turns the map into the surface of the Red Planet, or the Santa setting (only available with Autopilot engaged) which turns your car into a sleigh, the road into a rainbow and other road users into reindeer, or the vast array of old arcade games you can play with the steering wheel scroll buttons in gridlock. You will either find this stuff fun or excruciatingly annoying. Especially when you discover the racing games, which employ the car’s actual steering wheel and pedals, will do your tires no good whatsoever as they’re dry-steered about while you aim for a new high-score. Still, when was the last time you played in-built Mario Kart in an Audi? Exactly. Welcome to a new way to do interiors, where how you have fun when you’re waiting for a charge is just as important as the boring old business of regular transport. Owning Running costs and reliability If you’re happy just to lease it, the cheapest Model 3’s payments dip to £450 a month, from around £600 on a PCP. This is the iPhone of cars after all. In 2024 you’ll be due an upgrade. And in the meantime, Tesla is at pains to point out you’ll save tens of pounds per mile in tax, fuel, and maintenance versus a conventional petrol-powered rival, though that case will weaken as more EV contenders come on stream, with the likes of the BMW i4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E due on the scene imminently. The latter is more of a crossover of course, but if you need more space in your Tesla, there’s the higher Model Y now joining the family. Whereas Superchargers used to be free with the Model S and Model X, you have to pay as you go with the 3, although there’s an allowance of around five to six free Supercharges per year. You’ll spot the red and white charging stations at most motorway services now: as of March 2020, Tesla has created 16,100 Superchargers at over 1,800 locations worldwide. These include 908 stations in the U.S, 98 in Canada, 16 in Mexico, 520 in Europe, and 400 in Asia, with more promised to link in the gaps between major highways and byways. Plug the car into your three-pin wall socket at home and the juice crawls along, adding about five miles of range for every hour. Get a home wall box and you could charge at up to 16.5kW depending on your home connection – that’s 51 miles for every hour plugged in. More realistic for most UK homes is around 7kW, or 22 miles per hour of charging. Beware upgrading to 19-inch rims – they’ll pinch range due to added rolling resistance – and we’d shun the white interior scheme. Even if you’re only keeping your Tesla for a handful of years, the upholstery will be looking tired if you have children, pets, or wear denim. As standard, there are a plethora of features, from heated electric seats to built-in karaoke internet browsing with Netflix and YouTube apps, a tinted glass roof, electric folding, and adjustable door mirrors, and for 2021, wireless phone charging. Pity that Tesla chose to angle the charging bays directly at the driver, where they’re most distracting – but by the look of that touchscreen, Tesla’s hardly worried about screens being overbearing, is it? Happily, the waiting list is now down from over a year to less than a month. That’s the boon of only offering a handful of colors and only two cabin color schemes. The Model 3 doesn’t need a wild spec to stand out, yet. Verdict Final thoughts and pick of the range Everything Tesla has done up to this point has built towards the Model 3... and it's been worth it Posed against po-faced competitors, Teslas are invariably the quick ones, the efficient ones, the fun ones with Fart Mode, and the lucky ones least dependent on a haphazard charging ecosystem. Even a basic version with a single rearward motor and only Chill/Sport acceleration settings develops 235bhp and punches to 60mph faster than a £55k Jaguar F-Type. While the angry frog styling won’t be to all tastes, the interior is a real love/hate arrangement and the driving dynamics aren’t all that memorable once you’ve stopped swallowing your tongue every time you nail the throttle, it’s easy to see why the Model 3 has become a global standard-setter for EVs. This is the future we were promised – a car with sentience, a sense of humor, and a fresh take on the old norms. After trying this, your old repmobile will feel positively Brunellian. The Model 3 was Top Gear’s 2019 saloon of the year, beating the old guard and maintaining its lead of the new EV pretenders. It’s been in production since mid-2017, but even heading into middle age, nothing on the market has yet managed to beat the Model 3 on all fronts. While not without flaws, it is quite simply one of the most interesting, compelling cars in the world right now.

Are BMW cars durable?

I think that several good answers have been provided already. As an owner of a BMW I asked myself the same question for months. Arguably, at the end of the day, the best answer I received was provided by a local mechanic who knew how to work on German cars and it was that “if properly cared for, BMWs and most German cars can get to 300k miles or more”. The issue is that very few people properly care for them as it gets expensive and so the risk to buy a used lemon is fairly high. It is also not a secret that, I seem to recall, a bit over 50% of BMWs are leased. That is why in 2017 BMW changed the warranty to 3 years or 36k miles from 4 yr or 50k miles. They said that is what the market is asking as most people lease BMWs for 3 years and 30–36k miles. During the lease time, all typical services are covered and they even call you to bring the car in when it is due and it is free (brakes are not, but driving cars that are supposed to go fast almost without brakes it is always a bad idea, if you ask me, money or not money) so there is no real reason for the “owners” not to get the required work done. And the next buyer should get a car in good shape. But after that, the honeymoon is over, and everything has to be paid for and there is where the bad rap for luxury German cars begins. The normal wear and tear is not minor thing to consider either. On my Honda CR-V (21 years together and still counting, 301k miles together, I get 80–90k miles on a set of tires, I get about 80k miles on brakes). I religiously change the oil every 7–8k miles and get it serviced 3x a year and probably spend less than $1,000/year on average to keep it up. On my X5, which is still a tad too new to really say anything, based on the computer which tells me how I am doing, I can probably get to 40k miles for the front brakes and 55k for the rear brakes. Tires (run flats) I am probably going to get to 40–45k miles based on the thread wear and the amount of miles I have. And many tell me that it is already a major accomplishment. Oil change is set at 10k miles and, in my case, the computer told me I can get to 11k miles. Apparently, I drive it “better” than the average. I drive it fast, but I do not abuse the brakes, meaning that when I see brake lights well ahead of me I start to slow down. I did drive it at 110–120mph though. On my CR-V at 90mph it starts to feel like one is getting ready to take off… Fuel economy.. My old 1st generation CR-V gets 23.5–24 mpg with 87 grade fuel. My X5 gets 22–22.5 mpg with 91 grade. A newer CR-V gets quite a bit better mpg, but so would a BMW X1 or X3, a more suitable comparison. So on fuel, I am not feeling much of a pinch. I drive 30% city, 70% highway/freeway. During the occasional all-city driving, on a car like the X5,I feel like crying though. However, on all-freeway driving, like LA to SF, keeping a stable pace and coasting a lot, I got 25.6 mpg which is very respectable. Smaller and/or lighter models of BMW get respectable mpg these days too. That does not apply to the M-series, but mpg is not the reason one buys or leases those. Going back to durability. If you buy a used BMW, you need to pay close attention to the model and the year it was made. Consumer Reports has become sort of the go-to source for checking cars’ reliability. As of recent I started to become disenchanted with the publication for a series of reasons, but that is a story for another time. However, doing my research before purchasing my BMW, I notice that the reliability of the same model varied a lot by year. So for my X5 there were a few years in which it was possible to get a lemon, even if bought new! And other years were reliability seems to have become quite good. So, check the trend in reliability for the vehicle that interests you. Keep in mind that when new models are introduced, if important changes took place, the reliability records could mean next to nothing. In recent years, Audi managed to climb the ladder in matters of reliability approaching the likes of Lexus/Toyota, according to CR. BMW improved, but not as much. However, there is model and model. Series 7, for instance, seems to have awful records, no matter the publication, Series 3 seems the most reliable, etc. {ADDED: In early 2019, according to JD Power and Associates, Audi has gone down a lot, BMW and Mercedes have improved, Lexus Toyota is still at the top. Surprisingly Honda has dropped quite a bit. Porsche has made a serious jump forward. As I wrote earlier, reliability should be looked at on a year by year and brand by brand and even model by model and there are no general absolute scales of reliability: The industry average was 136 problems per 100 vehicles. I mean, is the driving experience so much better on a BMW than, say a Honda or a Toyota, to justify all the extra money to sink in the car to properly maintain it? That is a personal matter. Some people buy BMW or Mercedes or Audi to make a financial statement. Those, and I am among them, who bought it because they enjoy the car and the way it drives, may have different ways to look at it. I enjoy the feel of driving the X5 and I compared it to Lexus RX 350, Audi Q7, Volvo XC60 and XC90, Mercedes GLE 350, Jaguar F Pace, and a couple more. So, I did my research. I must say that after a few months, I fall asleep inside my X5, unless I can open it up and, in any case, a 0–60mph in about 6 seconds is not that impressive. Surely it is when I drive the X5 after driving my 20+ year old CR-V that gets 0–60mph in 8.5s, but it is not the 4s that really makes you dream. My wife and I tried the X5-M. Beautiful car, but it is brutal. Passengers can get sick if the driver does not drive it fairly slow and conservatively. My colleague’s M3 suffers from the same issues.. his elderly parents do not want to get in the car with him! But, ultimately, if properly cared for BMW and German luxury cars in general can last. It is just that the “properly cared for” is way more expensive than for a Toyota or a Honda. Trend in reliability has been improving, but it is not up there with the Japanese brands yet. And it may never be as they probably do not want to compete with them on reliability.

Has Alfa Romeo bombed in the US? I keep seeing ads for “new” 2018 models that are being sold at deep discounts. If so, why did Alfa Romeo bomb in the US?

Not sure how to define “bombed”. There’s a couple of relevant points about the entire Alfa Romeo situation. First, Alfa has never really had its own broad personality and market segment. The late great Sergio Marchionne (the architect of what FCA is today) really believed that the Alfa brand could be used as a brand to compete against the mainstream offerings of Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW, Porsche, Audi, etc. He also believed that Maserati could be used to compete with those companies higher end products. The Maserati thesis somewhat played out ok, the Alfa one less so. Its super relevant to note that the resurgence of the Alfa brand, and the push to make it unique, sporting and luxurious, and propel it into the higher end of European sport sedans was something the Marchionne really believed in and was almost obsessed with. He mentioned it on earnings calls, spoke about Alfa publicly often, and really sold the entire marque hard whenever the opportunity presented itself. He pushed Alfa hard, and targeted 100,000 Gulia sedans sold globally in 2017 alone, but they barely sold 25% of that target. 2018 was even worse…. The US relaunch was key to his strategy too. In 2017, car sales were simply on fire in the US. Anything with 4 wheels sold, and the luxury brands were all having banner years, as they did into 2018 as well (with the exception of BMW). It seemed a no brainer to bring Alfa back to the US to Marchionne, especially as Jeep was crushing it, the dealer body was excited for new product from FCA finally, and expensive sport sedans were far more profitable for everyone involved. Now, to really dig in to your question and the causes. First and foremost, pushing into the mid level sport luxury market is tough. There’re too many models, too much product in general, and too many brands competing for mindshare. Its no different than the struggle that Jaguar has had getting noticed and maintaining momentum. BMW has had terrible challenges with product line redundancy and confusion, and even Mercedes has stumbled here and there. Only Audi has sidestepped these problems for now at least…. The US didn’t necessarily need another mid level European luxury sport sedan brand, there are likely already too many. There’s also the lingering problem of societal memory of Italian cars from decades ago, when they developed a reputation for reliability problems, rust, and service challenges. Many of the buyers that could afford an $80,000 Giulia remember those days, just like they remember Jaguar’s dark days. And to add insult to injury, many of the long term tests of Alfa’s newest offerings yielded tough reliability problems as well, mostly focused on mysterious electronic maladies that scares the heck out of everyone (even me, and I’m an idiot). Many of us were/are ready to give Alfa a try, but the systemic problems are simply deal killers for many who can just go buy any of 10 other brands in the same market segment. And worse than the long term test results, is the fact that in 2019, the car market worldwide, including the US, is taking a breather, after several years of huge sales volumes just about everywhere on the earth. Everyone who wanted a new car already has one for the time being, and sales volumes are down in the US, the EU and China, which represent a huge amount of the planets car sales. Which brings us to the grander question…. Did Alfa in fact bomb in its bid to re-enter the US market? And if so, what does that mean. Alfa actually sold around 25,000 cars in the US in 2018, which isn’t too bad considering they only really started selling in 2017. Jaguar, who’s been in the US forever, sold around 39,000 cars in 2018, most of which were its new F-Pace SUV. So Alfa actually did pretty well. Porsche, who’s basically the king of the segment, sold 57,000 cars in 2018, and that was their best year ever. So given that context, I’m not sure if Alfa bombed. In fact, depending on how I tilt my head, squint my eyes, and suspend disbelief, I could almost convince myself that Alfa did fantastic against those other established brands with strong followings given they’ve only been at it for a couple of years in earnest. But I’m an idiot OCD lizard brain car guy. And I try and see the world through the lens of other car people and those that would buy cars like Alfa Romeo. And therefore, everything I wrote is probably wrong!

Why don't bigger car companies such as Ford start producing electric cars, eliminating Tesla's presence in the emerging market, thus claiming said market share for themselves?

General Motors, Nissan and Mitsubishi already are selling mass-market electric vehicles, but they're still more costly than cars with gasoline engines, and they haven't sold in great numbers. ( USA Not included ) Higher cost is one reason consumers are not yet buying purely electric vehicles in large numbers. The lack of charging points is another, leaving many owners of electric vehicles to use them mainly in cities or for shorter trips. Volkswagen and other automakers are working together on building a freeway network of fast-charging stations to enable longer trips with battery powered cars. VW's growth plan is heavily focused on electric vehicles and investments in "sustainable mobility." It aims to boost its operating margin to between 7% and 8% by 2025 (from 6% in 2015, excluding special items related to the diesel scandal), and to hold its distribution ratio at about 30%. Toyota's growth plan is more of an incremental one. Like several of its rivals (including VW and GM), Toyota is in the process of moving most of its vehicles to a shared architecture. That's expected to reduce costs and increase the speed with which it can launch new models and variants. Dieter Zetsche President August 2018: Porsche just released some new specs about the upcoming Taycan electric car. As expected the electric sedan will make more than 600 horsepower in total system power and come with 800-volt charging capability, which will give the car enough juice to go 400 km. (248 mi.) in just 15 minutes of charging. Overall, Porsche proclaims an electric range of 500 km. (about 310 mi.) and a 0-100 kph time of three and a half seconds. Porsche says it has built "three figures" worth of Taycan prototypes altogether. PorscheTaycan will ride on a custom-built platform called J1 with a big space in the floor for its hulking lithium-ion battery. The Taycan will come with multiple variants. Reportedly , the three initial power outputs offered will be 402 hp, 536 hp, and 670 hp. Daimler- Mercedes-Benz, has a message for Tesla CEO Elon Musk: It’s putting money into electric vehicles. Daimler’s provocation was in response to Musk’s own tweet sent over the weekend that expressed disappointment in the German automaker’s announcement it was going to invest $1 billion into its Alabama factory to produce an electric SUV for North America there. Daimler announced Sept. 21 that it plans to produce a Mercedes electric SUV under a new brand called EQ at the VANCE, Tuscaloosa, Ala. factory for the North American sales. The automaker is also building a separate battery plant next to the factory. The EQ brand will cover a number of electric products, from vehicles and charging services to home energy storage units. Established automakers as well as several U.S. startups are rolling out electric models to compete with Tesla , currently the market leader. Auto companies need electrics to meet new environmental standards in many countries. BYD on the ChinaEV blog, the e6 will be a fleet-only vehicle in the U.S, as the company instead concentrates on its electric bus sales in North America. The e6 electric crossover will be part of those plans, but any hopes the vehicle would be available for private purchase in the U.S. have now fallen through, at least for the time being. Instead, says BYD's Stella Li, the company will focus on taxi fleets. BYD recently held an opening event for its Lancaster plant in California, where the electric buses are produced. While the battery cells are imported from China, assembly and several other components are sourced from American companies. For most Americans then, their first taste of BYD's products won't be behind the wheel, but as a passenger in its electric buses and taxis. The venture is nearly a decade old, putting it in the elder-statesmen range of startups, but it has evolved its product strategy and timetable over the past seven years.It moved its headquarters from Florida to suburban Detroit, acquired an existing assembly plant in Normal, Ill., resolved to focus on electric vehicles, and now employs about 450 people in Michigan, California and Illinois. Rivian will debut two vehicles, an SUV and a pickup, at next month's AutoMobility LA. The company is eager to introduce itself to potential customers and begin taking deposits on its launch vehicles, which are expected to be produced and begin shipping mid-2020. "We're launching a vehicle that has to deliver a lot of technology — electrification, connectivity, self-driving," Scaringe said last week during a presentation at Automotive News' office. Panasonic has the biggest US exposure, followed by LG Chem and SDI With Tesla as the best-selling EV in 2015, with 25,000 Model S sales, Panasonic has the biggest exposure in the US EV market, followed by LG Chem and SDI. Panasonic will likely retain its top market share in the US with the completion of 35GW battery cell plant (50GW pack) in Nevada in 2017, which will be in time for the release of Model 3 EV. LG Chem operates 2GW battery capacity in Holland, Michigan, which was completed at end-2012 and partially operational from 2013. LG Chem is capable of further expanding its US plant without having to invest heavily in infrastructures, as the plant was originally designed to house further capacities. SDI has no battery plants located in the US or EU, but plans for sizeable investments centered around the EU and China for the next five years. If you were to put the 28 modules in parallel, you'd get (6.5 Amp*hours x 28 modules) = 182 Amp*hours at 14.4v. This would be tough to manage though, with an ideal minimum charge rate of about 100 amps at 16v (!). Don't forget the difference between "An amp" and "An amp for one hour." The big issue the Prius has is that its price pushes it against poverty spec cars from the premium German brands. The two batteries are also about the same size. The lithium batteries are 30.5 liters (1.1 cubic feet), while the nickel-metal ones are 1.25 cubic feet. Both are smaller than the outgoing battery, under the back seat . Lithium-ion is proven enough for Tesla, Chevrolet, Nissan, and many others as well. Toyota uses NiMH because its cheaper, which is fine, but Lithium-ion is superior in every way (except initial cost). Lithium-ion is just as durable. It has much lower self-discharge rate. Lithium-ion has higher voltage so fewer batteries are needed to obtain a certain voltage. Lithium-ion has much better energy and power density. NiMH will go the way of NiCad batteries--soon to be completely obsoleted by even cheaper and more powerful Lithium-ion variations. The Prius NiMH battery has a specific energy density of 41Wh/kg . Compare that to A123System's LiFePO4 prismatic cell 131W/Kg. That's more than 3X the energy density of the Prius c battery! The A123 prismatic cells require a heavier enclosure because they are pouches rather than hard encased cells. And, be careful of you units, because W/kg is power density. 131 Wh/kg is their energy density. As far as Lithium goes, we are at the stage that Toyota was at back in the late 90's, where they had D cell NIMH sticks for the NWH10, and large format NIMH for the RAV4 EV. Now, they have an experiment running with 5Ah cells in the Prius Alpha+ in Japan, and 21Ah cells in the PHV. The electric effect is now in full force, with established brands committing to offering a wider range of pure electric cars in the future, while those who depend heavily on diesel are seeing sales falter - with a deadline of 2035 in regions like the UK to halt sales in combustion cars. Prices are falling, models are diversifying and it's all going hand-in-hand with increased investment and roll-out of charging networks . But what electric cars are coming? Let's take a closer look at what you can expect to see hitting the roads in the next few years. JEEP Jeep Wrangler BEV Concept Jeep has teased an all-electric Wrangler. Thanks to a site looking forward to the future of Jeep , we now know that the brand is looking at an electric offroader. Not much is declared about the plans, but it does say more will be revealed at the Easter Jeep Safari. HYUNDAI Hyundai Ioniq 5 Hyundai has teased images of its forthcoming Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 is said to be based on the Hyundai 45 concept that was shown at the 2019 Frankfurt motorshow. It's expected to be a new E-GMP based battery electric vehicle and promised to get a world premiere in February 2021. KIA Kia future electric cars Kia has confirmed that there will be a new next-gen battery electric vehicle announced in early 2021. It will sit on the E-GMP platform, have a crossover-inspired design and over 500km of range. It will be the first launch under the new Kia branding and we suspect it will the car internally known as the Kia CV and closely related to the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5. RENAULT Renault 5 Prototype When in doubt, roll in nostalgia. That seems to be the approach that Renault wants to take, showing off an prototype of an electric Renault 5. We've all got fond memories of this classic, and it would go head-to-head with the Mini Electric and the Honda e as a compact EV for urban dwellers. Please Renault, please, please, please reinvent the Renault 5. MOTOR1 Audi Q4 e-tron Audi unveiled two versions of the Q4 concept - the e-tron and the Sportback . It's very much following the lead of the original e-tron model, offering two styles of electric SUV in smaller sizes than the existing model. That will expand the range towards Q5 size. A range of 279 miles is claimed from an 82kWh battery for the Quattro models, a rear-wheel drive only model should hit 310 miles. We're expecting to see more of the Q4 e-tron later in 2020, with the Sportback due in 2021 - and already spotted in camouflage out testing. BMW BMW iX BMW has announced its flagship electric SUV, the BMW iX . This is the production model of the long-tease iNext, now appearing more like an electric X5 in terms of size. It promises a number of configurations, with 300 mile range, all-wheel drive and a 500ps model. There's a refreshed interior design too, so it feels like something of a continuation of the BMW i3. HYUNDAI Hyundai Kona Electric Hyundai has announced a refreshed version of the Kona Electric , due on the roads in 2021. While the underpinnings remain similar - it will still give impressive 300 mile range and come in two battery sizes - there's been a refresh to the interior and the exterior to make this car look a little more like an EV. No word on pricing, but we expect it to compeitive. GMC Hummer EV There's an electric Hummer coming that promises to be a capable as combustion version. Hummer is throwing in loads of tech and loads of power, wanting to rival the Tesla Cybertruck. There's 350 miles of range promised and a super-fast 350kW charging, while the motors will deliver 1000hp and a 0-60 time of 3 seconds. There's full visibility with cameras under the body, as well as the ability to drive diagonally, thanks to all-wheel steering. Production won't start until late 2021. DACIA Dacia Spring The Dacia Spring is now an official prodcution car. Aimed at the affordable end of the market, it has a range of 140 miles, rugged urban looks, and 44hp. It's designed as a mass market EV for city dwellers. There's no word on pricing, and we also don't know if it's coming to the UK. POLESTAR Polestar Precept The Polestar Precept was a concept design, but Polestar has announced that it's going to put it into production. It's going to be aimed at the premium end of the market, with grand coupe lines and the promise not just of zero tailpipe emissions - but of an environmentally conscious approach to all the materials used in the car. BMW BMW i4 The BMW i4 is due for launch in 2020 and will sit on the same fifth-gen eDrive system as the BMW i3X and the iX. The model is what might expect from a BMW Gran Coupe, but with massive teeth and the details of the eDrive system have already been confirmed. There will be an 80kWh battery that will charge at 150kW and give a range up to 370 miles. The motors will produce 530bhp, giving a 0-62mph time of 4 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. It looks and sounds exactly what you want your mid-range BMW saloon to produce. It will be on the roads in 2021 - but there's also been a tease of an M Performance model . VW VW ID.4 The VW ID.4 is official, the German company's second electric model, this time in compact SUV form. There will be several versions of the ID.4 with 310 miles on the top model, starting as a rear-wheel drive model and expanding to be all-wheel drive in the future. There's no price or exact date on the ID.4, but we can expect to see it in 2021. POCKET-LINT Porsche Macan Porsche has announced that the Macan is going to move to being pure electric - meaning that Porsche will have an electric SUV. It will join the luxury ranks of SUV EVs with a performance leaning, using the 800-volt system Porsche is using in the Taycan, and sitting on the PPE platform adapted from Audi. Not a lot else is being said at the moment, but the shifting of the Macan to electric shows real diversification of the Porsche portfolio. It is expected on the roads in 2022. FORD Ford has promised that there will be an electric F-150 on the roads in 2022. That's going to hit the US market in the big way. Ford hasn't said much about its plans, except that it doesn't want to compromise on the performance that the F-150 offers. SKODA Skoda Enyaq iV Skoda's first electric SUV is the Enyaq iV and it's going to be closely related to the VW ID.4, both sitting on the same platform. Three battery capacities and five power levels mean a range of options, although not all will come to all markets. Prices will start from £33.450 in the UK for the 242 miles range model. It will be on the road in 2021. NISSAN Nissan Ariya Nissan's latest electric car is the Ariya . It was originally unveiled as a concept in 2019, but has made its way to production practically unchanged. It's an SUV, sitting in the space between the Qashqai and the X-Trail. The Ariya will offer two battery sizes and a number of different motor configurations, as well as options for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. With prices starting from an estimated £40,000, it's expected on the roads in 2021. BMW BMW iX3 No longer a concept, the BWM iX3 is the electric version of the X3, meaning you can how get an emission-free BMW SUV. It's an exciting change, slotting right into the competitive crossover space and it's great to see another EV in this space. It will be available from late summer 2020, price to be confirmed. AUDI Audi Artemis Audi has setup a special working group, called Artemis , with the aim of creating a highly-efficient electric car. The new group has been designed to work autonomously with plenty of freedom, with a target date of 2024 for a new vehicle. It's being headed up by Alex Hitzinger, formerly working on the Apple car project, and previously with some of the biggest names in motorsports. We're expecting something that pops out of the Audi template here, so watch this space. SAIC MOTORS MG 5 MG has said that it's bringing an electric estate car to the UK as soon as it can open showrooms again. Currently there are no electric estates so this fills a small gap in the options available, likely to appeal to those needing accessible load space and dog walkers. It looks to be based on the Chinese Roewe Ei5, and we're expecting a 52.5kWh battery and range of 260 miles. BMW BMW i7 BMW has confirmed that the next-generation of BMW 7 Series will include an all-electric version. It's not going to be exclusively electric as there will be petrol, diesel and hybrid versions too - but there's talk of two versions, the i7 and the i7S. The latter is expect to have a 120kWh battery, 660hp and a range of 320 miles. BMW is serious about electric cars and there's a lot in the pipeline - the BMW i7 will take things to the luxury level. RENAULT Renault Twingo ZE Renault has made one of its cutest cars electric in the Twingo ZE . This compact urban car is designed to keep the price down, with a 22kWh battery - good for 250km (143 miles) - and a 60kW motor, that will whisk you from 0-30mph in 4 seconds, perfect for city driving. There's no word on the price, but we've already heard it's not coming to the UK. FIAT Fiat 500 The Fiat 500 has been relaunched as an electric model, getting a redesign over the 2007 model that's been really popular. Now there's a 42kWh battery and 87kW motor, claiming 0-62mph in 9 seconds, but 0-30 in 3.1 seconds. It supports charging up to 85kW and will give you 199 miles of range (WLTP). There's four seats, lots of options (including convertible) and it's available to order from £29,000. TESLA Tesla Cybertruck If you wanted a vision of the future, then Tesla may have delivered it. Unveiling the Cybertruck , this is Elon Musk's promised pickup truck, with dual cab and then a loading bay at the rear. The Cybertruck is eye-catching with its unusual angular design. On the practical front it will come in three different versions with 250+, 300+ or 500+ miles of range, with the top model, a tri-motor version promising a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds. Tesla doesn't do things by half. It's available for pre-order now, deliveries expected from 2021. VW GROUP VW ID. Space Vizzion VW had long said it was going to have a full family of ID electric cars and the Space Vizzion is what you get when you pull together an electric estate or station wagon. It's quite the looker we can't help thinking and while many are focusing on SUV or crossover models, the lower and longer effect that you get from a wagon could do wonders for the performance of this EV, not to mention the boot space. It's a concept for now, but we're expecting this electric Passat (did we say that?) to be available in 2021. VW is saying 300 miles of range which isn't quite the 600 miles you'll get from the diesel, but we don't have to drive that far to walk the dog, so we'll all cope. FISKER Fisker Ocean Fisker is trying to shake things up with a range of luxury electric cars. The Fisker Ocean got an official unveiling in January 2020 - although it's not due on the road until 2022. It will use recycled and vegan materials, have an 80kWh battery and a range of 250-300 miles. Fisker wants to compete with Tesla with a 0-60 time of less than 3 seconds, but the big unique feature is the option for a full-length solar roof to help charge the battery. POCKET-LINT Electric Range Rover There's a fully electric Range Rover in the works, going under the name of Road Rover, because it's going to be slightly more road-centric than some of the other Range Rovers. It's supposed to sit between the Velar and the Evoque in terms of size, so it sounds a lot like the Jaguar i-Pace. Not much is currently known about what it might offer or when it might appear. POCKET-LINT Seat El-Born Seat is joining the electric car movement with the El-Born , named after a region of Barcelona. The car sits on VW's MEB platform and is due to arrive in 2020, getting its first appearance at the Geneva International Motorshow in 2019. Seat is looking at a 420km range (260 miles), with a 0-62kpm time of 7.5 seconds. There will be 204PS from the 150kW motor and a 62kWh battery. CUPRA Cupra El-Born Cupra - now a separate brand from Seat - has its own version of the el-Born. It also has the same name, Cupra El-Born , which doesn't really aid its cause of being seen as a separate entity. It has sporty looks, a custom chassis control and claims of 310 miles from the 82kW battery. POCKET-LINT Byton M-Byte Byton originally showed off an SUV EV concept , with broad ambitions for a start-up in the EV segment. That has now matured into the Byton M-Byte, with production getting started and looking to get on the road in mid-2020 - in China at least. The price of €54,000 sounds fairly aggressive, but there's little telling what verison that's for. There are two- or all-wheel drive options, with the latter claiming a 270 mile range. Most of the conversation is about the huge 43-inch display curving across the interior, however. POCKET-LINT Lotus Evija The Lotus Type 130 or Evija as it is called, is an all-electric hypercar limited to just 130 models, but paving the way for future production cars from Lotus. It has been designed for maximum performance, with 2000PS and a 70kWh battery that aims to give 250 miles of range. However, the car will offer blistering acceleration, and while Lotus hasn't given final figures, it'll hit 186mph in under 9 seconds. This car will cost £2 million pounds and preorders are open, asking for a £250,000 deposit. POCKET-LINT Lightyear One The Lightyear One is a luxury saloon that adds solar panels to the roof and bonnet of the car, aiming to give the owner a boost from the sun all the time - even when driving. While much of the car is conventional for an EV, the additional solar panels will give a 12km range boost per hour (in good light). That might mean free charging while parked at the beach - although in winter you'll have to charge it more. However, the asking price for the limited run Lightyear One will be €119,000, so going solar comes at a price. POCKET-LINT Audi e-tron GT concept Unveiled at the LA Auto Show 2018, the Audi e-tron GT Concept showcases Audi's future electric sportscar. This is a four seater, powered by the same batteries as the existing e-tron models and sharing a lot with the Porsche Taycan. Audi has been quite open about the co-development of the e-tron GT and the Taycan, and we're expecting a lot of technical similarities. The performances stats currently suggest an 800V charging system, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a range of 248 miles. There's a vegan interior on the Concept model, with Audi saying that it wants to push the eco message even further. The Audi e-tron GT Concept will be hitting the roads in 2020. POCKET-LINT Rivian RS1 Rivian wants to join the EV movement with this offroader of its own. It's designed to tackle the great outdoors, boasting a wading depth of 3ft and 0-60mph time of 3 seconds. Why you'd need to go so fast offroad, we'll never know. Rivian is a newcomer to the EV space, showing off its cars for the first time at the LA Auto Show in 2018 - there's also a truck/pickup version - and is available for pre-order for a $1000 deposit. We'd be tempted to wait until these are actually on the road before parting with any money. POCKET-LINT BMW i5 BMW unveiled the i Vision Dynamics concept coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017. It previews a mid-sized saloon car, in the BMW i range that's likely to be called i5 when it launches in 2021. It's bigger than the company's 3-Series saloon, but smaller than a 5-Series and designed to sit between the i3 and i8 in the electric BMW i range. The family-sized car will be capable of reaching 60mph in under 4 seconds, go on to a speed over 120mph and be able to last up to 372 miles on a single charge. Let's hope it arrives with the same futuristic design displayed on the concept version. POCKET-LINT Faraday Future FF91 A huge question mark hangs over the striking FF91. The company has been through ups and downs, but managed to showcase pre-production drivable models in 2020. The FF-91 has a huge 126-inch wheelbase, but that makes for a huge interior. The panoramic sunroof, rear and side windows use Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Glass, which passengers can tap on to tint the windows and let less light in. Don't expect to get a conventional rear-view mirror inside, as Faraday Future has replaced it with a widescreen monitor instead. The 1,050bhp electric power unit will accelerate to 60mph in 2.39-seconds and will have a driving range between 378 and 435 miles. Faraday Future says the battery can be completely recharged in 1 hour. POCKET-LINT ID Buzz and Cargo Concept The ID Buzz is due to go on sale in 2022. It references VW's historic Microbus and will able to seat up to eight people, with an interior that can be constantly changed around. There's also a Cargo Concept, which may well get launched before any passenger model arrives, with the rising demand for clean first and last mile transport. Two electric motors will give the ID Buzz a total power output of 369bhp to propel it to 60mph in around 5-seconds. It will be limited to a top speed of 100mph, will have four-wheel drive and a 372 mile driving range. You will be able to recharge the battery to 80 per cent, which VW says will be enough for 298 miles of travel, in 30 minutes.
