What treatments to improve health or cognitive ability are effective but have not become mainstream?

The irony is that all what is needed to improve health or cognitive ability is already known, but mainstream medicine still is looking for a cure of the diseases we get when we do not work on prevention. I am talking about prevention of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, which are the major diseases that either kill people prematurely, lead to a loss of memory and cognitive function or to disabilities. The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (also known as A4M) has published a book where all of this is discussed in detail (Ref.1). But there are yearly conferences as well in Las Vegas and other places where further details regarding anti-aging and prevention of disease are discussed. Since 2009 I have been attending the conferences in Las Vegas regularly every year. Based on this knowledge let me start by reviewing the tools that can be used to slow down the process of aging significantly, prevent the above-mentioned diseases and also disabilities. 1. Mitochondria At the center of improving health is the preservation and metabolic optimization of the mitochondria. Each of our cells contains little particles called mitochondria, which is where our energy metabolism takes place. Mitochondria function like mini-batteries. Old people who shuffle when they walk and have difficulties climbing stairs have lost significant amounts of mitochondria and simply run out of energy. 2. Preserving mitochondria There are supplements that specifically preserve mitochondria: PQQ (=Pyrroloquinoline quinone) helps mitochondria to multiply. A typical dose to take every day is 20 mg. Mitochondrial aging is slowed down by ubiquinol (=Co-Q-10, 200mg per day for a younger person, 400 mg per day for an older person). Co-Q-10 repairs DNA damage to your mitochondria. There are simple lifestyle changes that you can make: eat less calories as this will stimulate SIRT1 genes, which in turn stimulate your cell metabolism including the mitochondria. Resveratrol, the supplement from red grape skin can also stimulate your mitochondria metabolism. 300 to 500 mg of trans-Resveratrol once daily is a good dose. Build in regular exercise into your day – and I mean every day– as this will also stimulate your mitochondria to multiply similar to the effects of PQQ. Lipoic acid is an anti-oxidant that counters the slow-down of mitochondrial metabolism. I recommend 300 mg per day. Researchers from the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD found that mitochondrial DNA content varies according to age (less mitochondrial DNA in older age), sex (yes, women have more than men). Each mitochondrion has its own mitochondrial DNA contained in 2 to 10 small circular chromosomes that regulate the 37 genes necessary for normal mitochondrial function. 3. Slowing down hardening of our arteries It makes sense that young people who do not have signs of hardening of their arteries have better blood supply to their cells and thus supply their mitochondria with more oxygen and nutrients than frail, older people. The same is true for people who exercise regularly: more blood pumps through, more oxygen and nutrients reach the cells. Vitamin D and vitamin K2 have been shown to lower calcium in the blood vessels and to retain calcium in the bone preventing osteoporosis. This is particularly useful in postmenopausal women. This October 2014 publication mentions that apart from vitamin D (4000 IU) and vitamin K2 (100 to 200 micrograms) resveratrol and inositol are additional factors helping to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis. This September 2013 publication confirms that a deficiency for vitamin K2 is common in the general population. This deficiency leads to osteoporosis and calcification of the arterial wall and causes heart attacks, strokes and bone fractures. Supplementation with vitamin K2 at 100 to 200 micrograms per day is recommended to prevent this from occurring. 4. Sugar and starchy foods You need to understand that starchy foods equal sugar, once digested. As a result a refined cereal breakfast=sugar, pasta=sugar, bread=sugar, donuts=sugar, potatoes=sugar and so on. It has to do with the glycemic load. When you cut out sugar and starchy foods (meaning that the glycemic index of the foods you eat is below 50) you will shed 30 to 50 pounds of weight within 3 to 5 months, if you are overweight or obese. You will feel a lot more energy. Your blood vessels will be cleaned out as the oxidized LDL cholesterol will disappear and the HDL cholesterol will mop up what cholesterol deposits were there before. It is certainly good for you, if you are not into the sugar and candy stuff, but the seemingly harmless pizza and all the other starchy foods mentioned above are of concern as well. All of the high -glycemic carbs stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin. This in turn produces inflammation in tissues including the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the complications of this. Where does this leave us? For decades we have been told that saturated fats and cholesterol in our diet were the culprits and we replaced them with sugar that is part of a low-fat diet. We need to pay attention to the glycemic index and cut out high glycemic foods. However, it is OK to eat some carbs from the medium glycemic food list and most of our carbs from the low glycemic food list. With regard to fat it is important to consume only the healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil and omega-3 fatty acids. As you make these adjustments to your life style you will also prevent many cancers, as you normalize the body’s metabolism and help prevent chronic inflammation, which can cause arthritis and cancer. Finally, pay attention to stress management. The body and the mind work together. Uncontrolled stress leads to heart attacks and strokes. 5. Cut down on processed foods Processed foods contain the wrong type of vegetable oils that are composed of omega-6 fatty acids. This disbalances the ratio of omega-6 fatty acid versus omega-3 fatty acids. This is typical for all the processed foods, but also fast food places in the industrialized world. The consequence of this disbalance is the formation of arachidonic acid and inflammation in blood vessels and tissues. This causes high blood pressure from inflammation of the arteries, arthritis from inflammation in the joints and can irritates the immune system to the point of causing autoimmune diseases. The end result after decades of exposure to a surplus of omega-6 fatty acids are disabilities from end stage arthritis, as well as heart attacks and strokes from inflammation of the arteries due to the hardening of the arteries. The remedy for this is to cut out all processed food and stick to the basics of preparing your own food from healthy ingredients with no food preservatives. Use olive oil for salads and coconut oil for cooking. Take omega-3 supplements to restore the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid balance. 6. Replace hormones with bioidentical ones When I watch postmenopausal women, many look prematurely aged with sagging skin in their faces. Had they replaced their missing hormones when they entered menopause, the bioidentical hormones used for replacement therapy would have helped their skin to remain younger looking, hardening of the arteries would have been postponed and osteoporosis in the bones would also have been prevented. With men it is now known that testosterone is vital for prevention of prostate cancer, but it is also important to prevent heart attacks, strokes and dementia as they age. I would recommend that you at an age of 45 to 50 you see a naturopath or an anti-aging physician to have your hormones checked and if necessary start replacement with bioidentical hormones. 7. Quit smoking or never start Smoking is incompatible with what I said under point 1 and 2 above. You want oxygen in your cells, not the hundreds of carcinogens and carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke. Conclusion Prevention of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease and avoiding disabilities from aging are now a possibility, if we manage our lives in a way that the biochemistry of our bodies remains the same and our mitochondria continue to function, even when we get older. I discussed the details of how to do that above. I hope that you incorporate at least some of these steps in your life to prevent suffering from the major diseases and avoid disabilities and premature aging. How should I prepare for BITSAT 2017?

Hey students i did score 354 but it was on one of the days the paper was unreasonable and did have some questions which left me wondering. Most important thing needed in bitsat is not a super high IQ level of toppers but good preperation, with good preperation i have seen many average students beat iit rank holders in bitsat . This is also because most of the students who have the ability to score 320+ are busy studying for iit advance and do not give much precedence to bitsat. What many students fail to do is read the syllabi of bitsat carefully if you do that you would notice that topics like cell ( biology ones) , zeolites, biological properties of Ca and Mg , cement and most importantly petroleum (papers on 4 different dates had a question from this chapter and left all the students in unawares) Bitsat has a tendency to ask questions in chemistry which are absurd and from parts of ncert which we generally pay no attention too.Read ncert of chemistry very thoroughly plz .Its like finding easter eggs in games. Also read up the syllabus and tally up whether you know all the things or not in maths and physics too. IMPORTANT THING IS THESE MAY PROVIDE YOU 20–25 MARKS MORE THAN AN AVERAGE FELLOW , BUT YOU MUST FOLLOW FOLLOWING TO SCORE ATLEAST 320 IN BITSAT——- TIME MANAGEMENT—— most of us who are of average intellect are not able to complete the test in time and lose up on one or two very easy questions. To avoid this first attempt the easiest portion of bitsat - english and mental ability - for this portion no need to study anything extra if your english is fine or average. This section in actual bitsat (not mock tests - they are harder) would actually be over before you know it. (20 mins max).After this attempt your favourite out of pcm (that will reduce the amount of easy question left behind) important thing is never attempt maths at last.Maths of bitsat is very lengthy and of 135 marks so lots at stake here ( generally if you are weak in maths never attempt it at the last in iit mains or advance or any paper— big theory behind it).Whatever your pattern maybe perfect it over atleast 4 complete bitsat paper. While doing the paper at home attempt the paper in 2 hr 40 mins , if you are able to attempt 130–140 questions well and good, give approx. 60 secs per q. in chemistry 80 secs in physics (easily achievable) and 120 secs MAX in maths. During this if you come across any calculation intensive question in p and c or you are not able to do them correctly in one attempt; leave them and GO FORWARDS , YOU would have plenty of time to attempt them later. HIGH SPEED—- speed is another thing that you can improve if you are preparing for jee also than you must have given tons of papers where you would do mind numbing 60 questions in 180 mins and score 50–60% , but in bitsat you have to attempt 150(162) questions in 180 mins and score 75–80% .This can be acheived by repeatedly solving as many questions as you can in time boundation. The more no of different questions you solve in physics and maths - your speed would increase consistently because you are creating a habit of applying a set no. of formulas and concepts over a wide range of problems - which increase your chance of attempting correctly a similar or look alike question in bitsat or jee mains. The questions are generally easier in bitsat than in jee mains, but time is very less so if you are feeling insecure attempting an unknown question better leave it untouched. Accuracy— only way to increase this is to keep calm and concentrate on the current question only , read the question properly even write down the given info/make a diagram(mechanics) , as it will reduce silly mistakes. TO ATTEMPT OR NOT TO ATTEMPT EXTRA 12 QUESTIONS—— after you have once seen through the entire paper the following scenarios may remain==== attempted questions are 135+ and time left - 20+ mins definitely go for it attempted questions 125–135 and time left 20+mins you should not go for it as , even at 90% accuracy (unreal) you will only score 300, go for it if you have 30+ mins left only if only 20 mins or less are left it is better to attempt the left lengthy questions and revise the paper thoroughly might try putting the options or values in maths or physics portion Another thing to do, this was for 2016 only as extra questions were harder to do and most students were able to correctly attempt 8 of it ( most of them were toppers). So go to exam hall half an hour before (if you are giving the test in 2nd or 3rd slot) and ask the students coming out whether to attempt 12 qs or not as they can make a difference if they are easy which was the case on some days.

Image source: Ageless Aging - Medical Articles by Dr. Ray Ageless Aging We have been exposed to a lot of clichés about aging, which makes it more difficult to dispel rumors and to clearly focus on what can and what cannot postpone aging and the associated disabilities. Here I will attempt to summarize what is known about this topic. The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (also known as A4M) has published a book where all of this is discussed in detail (Ref.1). But there are yearly conferences as well in Las Vegas and other places where further details regarding anti-aging are discussed. Since 2009 I have been attending the conferences in Las Vegas regularly every year. Based on this knowledge let me start by reviewing the tools of anti-aging that can be used to slow down the process of aging significantly. Mitochondria At the center of anti-aging is the preservation and metabolic optimization of the mitochondria. Each of our cells contains little particles called mitochondria , which is where our energy metabolism takes place. Mitochondria function like mini-batteries. The citric acid cycle builds up ATP, which is subsequently hydrolyzed into ADP and orthophosphate releasing energy for cell metabolism. Old people who shuffle when they walk and have difficulties climbing stairs have lost significant amounts of mitochondria and simply run out of energy. The key to prevent this from happening is to preserve our mitochondria. We inherited them from our mother, because only the head of the sperm, which does not contain mitochondria entered the ovum when the egg cell that was destined to become you was fertilized. Subsequently the mitochondria from mother’s egg have provided all of the mitochondria in the cells of our body. 2. Preserving mitochondria There are supplements that specifically preserve mitochondria: PQQ (=Pyrroloquinoline quinone) helps mitochondria to multiply. A typical dose to take every day is 20 mg. Mitochondrial aging is slowed down by ubiquinol (=Co-Q-10, 400 mg per day is a dose that I recommend). Co-Q-10 repairs DNA damage to your mitochondria. There are simple lifestyle changes that you can make: eat less calories as this will stimulate SIRT1 genes , which in turn stimulate your cell metabolism including the mitochondria. Resveratrol, the supplement from red grape skin can also stimulate your mitochondria metabolism. 300 to 500 mg of trans-Resveratrol once daily is a good dose. Build in regular exercise into your day – and I mean every day– as this will also stimulate your mitochondria to multiply similar to the effects of PQQ. Lipoic acid is an anti-oxidant that counters the slow-down of mitochondrial metabolism. I recommend 300 mg per day. L-arginine is an amino acid that is a precursor of nitric oxide (NO). Red beet is a rich source of nitric oxide, which is directly released into your system. There are also commercial products for NO. This keeps the arteries open, prevents high blood pressure and also hardening of the arteries and has a direct effect on preserving mitochondria. Researchers from the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD found that mitochondrial DNA content varies according to age (less mitochondrial DNA in older age), sex (yes, women have more than men) and mitochondrial DNA; it even has an inverse relationship to frailty and a direct relationship to life expectancy. This paper was published in February of 2015. Each mitochondrion has its own mitochondrial DNA contained in 2 to 10 small circular chromosomes that regulate the 37 genes necessary for normal mitochondrial function. In multi ethnic groups it was apparent that mitochondrial DNA content was dictated by the age of a person. Frailty was defined as a person who had aging symptoms including weakness, a lack of energy compared to the past, activity levels that were much lower than before and loss of weight. When persons with frailty as defined by these criteria were identified, they were found to have 9% less mitochondrial DNA than nonfrail study participants. Another subgroup were white participants; when their bottom mitochondrial DNA content was compared to the top mitochondrial DNA content, the researchers found that frailty was 31% more common in the bottom DNA content group. This means that white people are more prone to frailty and they should take steps early on to prevent this from happening. 3. Slowing down hardening of our arteries It makes sense that young people who do not have signs of hardening of their arteries have better blood supply to their cells and thus supply their mitochondria with more oxygen and nutrients than frail, older people. The same is true for people who exercise regularly. Vitamin D and vitamin K2 have been shown to lower calcium in the blood vessels and to retain calcium in the bone preventing osteoporosis. This is particularly useful in postmenopausal women. This October 2014 publication mentions that apart from vitamin D and vitamin K2 resveratrol and inositol are additional factors helping to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis. This September 2013 publication confirms that a deficiency for vitamin K2 is common in the general population. This deficiency leads to osteoporosis and calcification of the arterial wall and causes heart attacks, strokes and bone fractures. Supplementation with vitamin K2 at 200 micrograms per day every day is recommended to prevent this from occurring. 4. Sugar and starchy foods You need to understand that starchy foods equal sugar, once digested. As a result a refined cereal breakfast=sugar, pasta=sugar, bread=sugar, donuts=sugar, potatoes=sugar and so on. It has to do with the glycemic load . When you cut out sugar and starchy foods (meaning that the glycemic index of the foods you eat is below 50) you will shed 30 to 50 pounds of weight within 3 to 5 months, if you are overweight or obese. You will feel a lot more energy. Your blood vessels will be cleaned out as the oxidized LDL cholesterol will disappear and the HDL cholesterol will mop up what cholesterol deposits were there before. It is certainly good for you, if you are not into the sugar and candy stuff, but the seemingly harmless pizza and all the other starchy foods mentioned above are of concern as well. All of the high -glycemic carbs stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin. This in turn produces inflammation in tissues including the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the complications of this. Where does this leave us? For decades we have been told that saturated fats and cholesterol in our diet were the culprits and we replaced them with sugar that is part of a low-fat diet. We need to pay attention to the glycemic index and cut out high glycemic foods. However, it is OK to eat some carbs from the medium glycemic food list and most of our carbs from the low glycemic food list. With regard to fat it is important to consume only the healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil and omega-3 fatty acids. As you make these adjustments to your life style you will also prevent many cancers, as you normalize the body’s metabolism and help prevent chronic inflammation, which can cause arthritis and cancer. Finally, pay attention to stress management. The body and the mind work together. Uncontrolled stress leads to heart attacks and strokes. 5. Cut down on processed foods Processed foods contain the wrong type of vegetable oils that are composed of omega-6 fatty acids. This disbalances the ratio of omega-6 fatty acid versus omega-3 fatty acids . This is typical for all the processed foods, but also fast food places in the industrialized world. The consequence of this disbalance is the formation of arachidonic acid and inflammation of tissues. This causes high blood pressure from inflammation of the arteries, arthritis from inflammation in the joints and can irritate the immune system to the point of causing autoimmune diseases. The end result after decades of exposure to a surplus of omega-6 fatty acids are disabilities from end stage arthritis, as well as heart attacks and strokes from inflammation of the arteries due to the hardening of the arteries. The remedy for this is to cut out all processed food and stick to the basics of preparing your own food from healthy ingredients with no food preservatives. Use olive oil for salads and coconut oil for cooking. Take omega-3 supplements to restore the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid balance. 6. Replace hormones with bioidentical ones When I watch postmenopausal women, many look prematurely aged with sagging skin in their faces. Had they replaced their missing hormones when they entered menopause, the bioidentical hormones used for replacement therapy would have helped their skin to remain younger looking, hardening of the arteries would have been postponed and osteoporosis in the bones would also have been prevented. With men it is now known that testosterone is vital for prevention of prostate cancer, but it is also important to prevent heart attacks, strokes and dementia as they age. I would recommend that you see a naturopath or an anti-aging physician to have your hormones checked and if necessary start replacement with bioidentical hormones. Conclusion Slowing down aging and avoiding disabilities from aging are now a possibility, if we manage our lives in a way that the biochemistry of our bodies remains the same and our mitochondria continue to function, even when we get older. Why is the Chinese military viewed so poorly by Western countries?

Because of media propaganda, history, and reality. Selective report about Chinese military is already beyond the world “biased”. When is the last time you see media posting real in-exercise or in-operation Chinese combatant, instead of some gate guard, trainee, or soldiers in decennial parade? The western medias never show any slightest sign that Chinese footmen have enough bulletproof vest + individual radio + gun decorated like X’mas tree, do they? Pardon me questioning more aggressively: By free & private mainstream media, had you ever been shown how fully-armed Chinese servicemen and servicewomen looks like in theatre? If I smear their faces and remove the logo of Chinanews, it gonna be almost impossible to let some western folks recognize which country these she-peacekeepers come from. How many countries would one gonna have to pass before guessing “can it be that, ehhhh, China?” Just think. The impression one have is made by the information one recieve. I don’t feel surprised for people “view poorly” to Chinese army. It is some sort of fact, but mostly is symptom of ignorance caused by long-term selective report. It takes 0 effort to find more solid evidence. Below is the first picture about Chinese military found after searching “China” on website of The National Interest, a relatively serious magazine. It is used as illustration in the article How Terrorism Could Derail China's 'One Belt, One Road' What u see in the pic? I see “dim cucoloris of a soldier who has nothing more than uniform standing lonely in front of bright but blur political slogan.” How SYMBOLIC! What a bloody perfect STEREOTYPE image! A random picture already concetrated all elements it needed to intensify a perspective of “Perplexed, badly-equipped, politically brainwashed, POOR Chinese army.” OBOR is mainly a trade route acrossing Middle-Asia and Indian Ocean, so what should be the proper illustration, if the journalist wanna really show something Chinese military to do with it? How about 62th Informationalized Mechanized Infantry Brigade of 21st Corp? It is stationed at northwestern China, and its strategic direction is towards Middle Asia. How about to use a photo of Chinese Naval Escort Flotilla in Aden Gulf of Indian Ocean? It’s already 25th batch now. These photo are not difficult to find, not at all. However, The National Interest insisted something only suggestive. “Why is Chinese military viewed so poorly by western countries?” The ones who provide what they read want Chinese army looks poor. This is a fact, not an accusation. Beside hiding capability, the other side is exaggeration of intention. There is a “small” problem for western media portraying China. The MSM have to demonize China, as well as belittle it. So, in military aspect, PLA is set to a role which is aggresive, mass number, and very poor. Chinese armed force protect its country on its own territory. The last time it fight outside the border China claims was 1979. Very few oversea deployment in last 30 years, all strictly abide UN protocol. However, if someone impose some “ambition” like “controlling this or that, eventually dominate the world” into PLA, than the image of Chinese army turns to imcompetent megalomania. There is also historical reason. The Korean War gave westerner the first impression of Neo-China’s army: Poorly equipped, poorly supplied, dumbass swarms only fight with number. The first 2 points are definately true, but there is a vital flaw in last one. On this planet, in the war participated by industilized powers, NOT a single campaign is won by that way after 1904, the time when mighty Maxim Machine Gun joined battlefield of Japan-Russia War. “Barely have anything other than men” doesn’t mean “win by piling up flesh in front of enemy fire”. The key was to explore all potential on how to use men. Contrary to universal western belief of rigid command chain, CPVA was very frank inside from head to boot: After captured several lost Chinese soldiers from 40th Army, UN Army felt so inconceivable that these low-rank Chinese infantry know the target and brief plan of entire campaign carried out by 250000 men. Well, they were really “foxy”. Magnify the first picture: “Assualt teams”, “Motar crew”, “MG crew”, “Commanding post”, “Squads gradually meet up to get advantage in CQB” Imagine a P.E. class at school, 50 students doing sports could make a standard 400m playground looks like “people everywhere”. That is what the rival of CPVA would feel. Literally all US soldiers remember “enemy kept coming endlessly”. It was not because there were that many Chinese soldiers, (if they really killed that many, Chinese troops would surely all died), it was because US soldiers were actually shooting at much lesser people than they thought. The formation when CPVA squad attacking, divided into 3 attack teams + 1 fire support crew (not shown in pic), teams are 20–40 meters away from eath other, in order to reduce damage from enemy fire. The regulation of infantry required: “one motar shell should only cause 1 man down, one 105mm shell could at most disable 2 teams, even the most fearsome MG flanking fire should only cause less than 2 teams casualty.” Such a formation was adopted for moving through enemy firepower with possibly minimal loss. “Our chance is within 50 meter. Stay low, pace up and carry on!” A CPVA squad defending dugout in early 1951 (much less sophsticated than post-1951 ones. Chinese troops learn from the war, really fast.): A squad in defending = Special rifleman aka marksman, snipe enemy HVTs; + MG man, slow down enemy move; + Grenadier (or motar crew), deal area damage to crowded and slowed groups; + Assistant, backup and help firepower posts; + Melee team with bayonet-on, ready to breach into enemy formation intending to confuse enemy fire support. Launching counter-charge in very close range to cease enemy attack, was a widely used tactics in all CPVA defend battles. Getting mixed with enemy infantry was the only effective way to weaken US firepower. “2 man-down in exchange for another 15 minutes, great trade-off!” It was a kind of very unusal thought about method of war, carried out by an entire generation of veteran who just win liberation for their people. They grew up in an oppressed life, lived years if not decades with smell of gunpowder, knowing their fellow people just began enjoying unprecedented right and freedom. They cannot accept the fact that millions fight, with courage, devotion and flexibility, for a country ruled by communist. And racial superiority is badly smashed as well. Racism strongly existed at the time of Korean War, African-American had to be assigned into “black units” seperated from white soldiers. China know it very well cuz C Company of 24th Infantry Regiment surrendered to CPVA after minor resistance. Photo taken shortly after they were captured, I don’t think their smile is forced by gunpoint. The status of Chinese people in US was, at that time, probably even lower than other colored. I hope you know, Chinese was the only immigration ethinic group specificly excluded in US by law. The largest lynching incident in American histroy also targeted Chinese. Obviously, the Chinese speciality of the art on using men would surely be described as worthless and against civilization peculiarity. They cannot accept the fact that Chinese could be resolute and wise in war, capable to have dignified fight with whites. Combine these 2 together, we got how they possibly review Korean War: “Q: How did they fight? A: Come to us in large number, nothing changed since Mongols era, Asian normadic horde flooding everything… Q: Like Boxer Rebellions? A: Nah, Half a million of them were routed by 12,000 men 8-power-allies army. Q: Like IJA? A: Nah, Useless Banzai charge, can do nothing more than terrifying rookies. Despite all serious books about Korean War, like Cambridge PRC History, The Coldest Winter, Korea: The First War We Lost etc., the westerners still obssesed to an illusion of “pathetic communist Chinese human waves”. Poor army, very fitting perspective from the excuse they make up, very fitting. There are significant reality reasons. The fiscial support to Chinese military has been longly lagged behind economy and technology thrive. Chinese military expense had been 1.X% of GDP since 1986, X is always lower than “5” since 1992. Whilst China have 14 neighbor countries, bordering 2 of 3 world largest drug dens (Golden Crescent and Gloden Triangle), unstable regions like India-Pakistan, Korea, Central Asia, and still technically in the civil war. Plus most part of the border are on formidable terrain which is unaccessiable for machines. The number of military personnel is a must. Elite troops are only good at pure military action, but would be a huge waste to use in secure mission. Poacher, drug dealer, terrorist infiltrator, smuggler, illegal border crosser, normad following his herd, etc. are not something fancy weapons and keen-witted small corp can deal with. These circumstances require men, with arm, in uniform, show up at site. Thus the low spend and large number caused Chinese military relatively “poor”. Chinese defense budget was $40k for each servicemen in 2015, the same expense in US was $420k. Just can’t be close in overall quality while spend 10.5 times lesser on everyone enlisted. Now let’s come to technology part. Historically, Chinese army had long been lag behind than world top level. It is inevitable for a country which was pre-industry in 1949. When superpowers already finished nuke and computer, China was struggling on how to make nail and firematch on her own. When USS Kitty Hawk started construction in 1956, China just mastered know-how to manufacture AK-47 on her own in the same year. This “poor” in technology was literally no hope at that time. Many other support, trasport and ISR planes I didn’t calculate. Chinese navy commissioned 4 vessels of 052D class Area Air-Defense DDG in FY16 (1 ship on Feb. 2017 so I use FY here). Only mentioning 052D class, now there are other 4 in sea trial, and 3 in fitting-out after launched, 2 building in dry dock. All get done, in a single year, with defense budget as a RIDICULOUS 1.3% of GDP (954 billion/ 72.6 trillion, in CNY). With limitless supply of military asset, the attrition in training is also very affordable. So the strict train and high-end exercise could be done as many as man can endure. Many incompetent people, flawed equipments, outdated thought, unpractical tactics had already been exposed in high-intense exercises and had been corrected. Well-trainned and experienced personnel CAN be bought. It would be strange to consider the personnel of an armed force are some sort of “unprofessional”, hence they could launch 100 missiles of different aim in a single naval combat exercise, or put 4 fighter jet regiments and a dozen of AWACS wrestle in same theater for months long, or send ground force brigades to get f*cked one by one confronting an OPFOR combined by US information & air supremacy + Chinese artillery & scheming. Those are what China doing annually in last several years, likely since 2009.
