What's the buying experience like when purchasing a high end luxury car like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc?
Going anonymous here as I don't want anyone who knows me to think I'm bragging. I purchased a Bentley Continental GT V8S in the US (San Francisco). Rang up the dealership (there are not many that sell Bentleys here) in SF, told them I'm looking for the exact model and exact specs. I wanted a Dark Sapphire (blue) exterior with linen (beige) colour interior. Told them I'm paying cash and don't want to waste my / their time. They started taking the enquiry seriously. They sent me 2 options that closely matched my specs. I have a delay of 2–3 months in my purchase, so they sold off. Contacted them again, asked about those models. Told they were sold and they spoke about another one in their dealership that was discounted about $40k. That was a black exterior with red interior. Visited them, test drove that, showed to my wife and she didn't like the colour. So I asked them to custom order one for me. The sales manager wasn't very convincing. He was very annoying trying to subtly sell me the car they had in stock. I felt he was trying to intimidate me. So I emailed his boss with the request. They sent me the closest match. I didn't like the dashboard wood. So I asked them to keep looking. They found one in the factory (all cars are manufactured in Crewe, England). I went in, signed a contract and reserved that. Wired the full payment for the car. This is where things get interesting. Once they got the money things started to move very quickly. They gave me the shipping status. When the car would be loaded on the ship, when that would land in NYC, when it would be loaded on the trailer and when I can get delivery. Got frequent emails/calls from the dealer on the status. On the delivery day, I took my wife and kid along. I was treated extremely well and the whole process was done in about 1 hour. Drove out shortly after. Here is a picture taken on delivery day

What happens to all the abandoned cars in Dubai? Can I import those into the USA?
These cars can be found all over the place. In my building there is an 850csi covered in dust(not sure what year) and an M6, amongst others. They are very common in Dubai. I drive past a fairly new Audi A4 on my way to work that has been parked there for about a year. Abandoned cars are very common in Dubai but dont think that it just some rich guy that left it because he was bored with it. As the previous answers mentioned, these cars were owned by people that found themselves in debt and had to leave the country or was confiscated because the amount of fines exceeded the value of of the car. You can find tons of amazing cars at the police impound. Most of them even have their keys inside. Literally hundreds of cars. I found quite a few rare and classic cars as well. At least a hundred bikes too. I have taken these pics on an excursion to the impound. Very sad to see. Cars not in the pics that broke my heart was a dark blue s65(~2012) with collapsed air suspension, paint was peeling and all rubber cracked. It must have been parked there for 2 or 3 years, so I guess mileage must have been low. There was a Bentley Continental with only one rear window open, and about two years of dust and rain entered this tiny window, back seat and surrounding area was trashed, rest of interior was ok though. There was a yellow 911 convertible with its roof down and the interior was no longer recognizable. Seats were completely destroyed. In the pics, the saddest car is probably the F430 spyder, parked with windows down but ready for a restoration. The RS5 just arrived and hardly had any dust on it, but will probably be there for a long time. As for the last part of your question, buying these cars are not impossible, but incredibly difficult. Cars have to have all cases against the owners dismissed, all debt dismissed or paid off, and then if the owner does not claim them back, the cars will go into police auction. There is a long queue of car restorers and car flippers waiting to pick these cars up for a bargain. Edit: This answer is getting slightly popular so I thought I'd upload a few more pics. Edit: Lots of people are asking about the size of the impound. I took this pic from Google Maps so you guys can see the size of it. There is a much larger impound right next to it, and there are quite a few of these impounds in Dubai and in the UAE. Thousands of cars going to waste. Edit: Sorry for the edits, but just to respond to people saying that this is a waste, please realise that all countries have car impounds, and with this being Dubai, a few exotics is not completely unexpected. All these cars have court cases pending against them, and they cannot be sold without all necessary protocols being taken place and all fines been either paid or written off. These cars were most likely owned by people that lived above their means trying to live the Dubai life, but not everybody owns an oil well. What's the nicest car I can drive without looking like a rich jerk?
To me if a car is a great work of art it can't really make you look like a jerk. So there's another option, rather than understated but luxurious cars like the VW Phaeton, look for something that iconic. IMO to make you look like a jerk the car has to be flashy, e.g. a combination of massive, brightly coloured, open topped, covered in spoilers, loud (engine and stereo). Any of the great classics, e.g. most Ferraris, Jaguars, Aston Martins are not that flashy. You can spend hundreds of thousands on those cars and people will admire them not sneer. For example the Ferrari Dino. These go for $300K. If anyone tried to tell me I looked like a jerk driving this I'd laugh at them. For a modern car I'd try the Bentley Continental R. ~$200K plus tax, 6-litre W12 engine, 552 bhp 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. But very understated (as these things go). It's actually less flashy in reality as it's relatively small. And whatever you do, get it in gunmetal or possibly navy blue, that cuts the jerk factor down by 50%.

In my experience (most recently when I got a ticket 2 days ago), if everyone’s speeding, but one car is obviously going faster than the others, that one gets pulled over :( Other times it can be pretty subjective. My favorite case was when I was on the 101 north of L.A., and I was one of two cars on this stretch of freeway, both going about 15mph over the limit in the left lane. The other car was in front of me, and as we started going uphill, he gradually slowed, and I decided to pass him on the right to maintain my speed. As I was passing him on the right, going about 5MPH faster than he was, I suddenly saw flashing blue/red lights pop out of nowhere right behind me, and my heart sunk, thinking “why did you just do something so blatantly stupid?” I’m a boring middle-aged guy riding with my equally middle-aged wife in our boring middle-aged family guy Acura TL. The car I was passing was being driven by a slightly older guy, accompanied by a superhot 20-something “Hollywood Girl”, in a Bentley Continental convertible with the top down. I was ,clearly, going faster than he was, right next to him, but when I checked my rear-view mirror again, the ninja cop was gone… well not gone—he had moved over to the left lane to pull over the Bentley. Sometimes it pays to be a boring guy in a boring car :)

The Case in England When I lived in Oxford, I chose to live with a host family rather than pay extra to live in the campus dorm. That proved to be the better decision, but that’s a story for another day. I lived with a single mum and her 7 y/o daughter in a 2(.5?) bedroom council house. I was happy there, the family was good fun, and my host mum Ally always made sure to keep the house clean. The neighbourhood I lived in was categorically on the lower half of the middle class, but I don’t much care for that. However, there were notably a number of houses in an area such as the one I resided in with.. shall we say unrepresentative automobiles. I remember seeing a baby blue Bentley Continental GT parked just a few houses down, and some other houses weren’t shy about their BMWs/Mercs either. The Case in Indonesia The case in my birth country is the same as it is in many other places. The middle class putting on a show. It’s quite entertaining, to say the least. They live in snazzy homes, drive posh cars, and own the latest gadgets. Almost certainly, they’re all bought using borrowed money that, when added up, eats up almost all of their salaries. There’s no money put aside for savings/investments in case of a rainy day. Recently, there’s been a case publicised on Twitter that’s been garnering attention. Someone posted about a friend of theirs who make $5500/month (rough conversion) and has all the “fancy” stuff. But now, during the time of massive social restrictions to reduce the Covid-19 spread, said friend has been furloughed. Now, they’re barely keeping up with bills. I have a sense of pity for these people. With the façade they try to maintain, it’s clear they can afford to allocate money for investments, but choose not to. I believe it’s largely cultural, something about wanting to show their relatives and friends that they’ve made something of themselves.
