What is a good safe, affordable small car to buy?
I am not too sure on the exact sizes of these cars, but I think they ,might, fit your bill. Try some of these models (assuming you live in Europe). They are classified as small cars (super-minis): Nissan Micra Vauxhall/Opel Corsa or Vauxhall/Opel Adam VW Polo/Skoda Fabia/Seat Ibiza/Audi A1 (if you are feeling a bit posh. its basically a posher version of the ibiza, fabia and the polo) VW Up/Skoda CitiGo (smaller than the VW/Skoda/Seat/Audi models mentioned above) VW Fox ( you will probably get a few cheaper old models) Renault Clio Ford Fiesta/ Ford KA Toyota Yaris Toyota Aygo (smaller than the yaris) Toyota IQ (Smaller than the Aygo.. almost like a smart car) Also try going for older models of these cars as they tend to be smaller than the newer models (body shapes). In North America, a Toyota Corolla gets as good gas mileage, costs no more, seats 4, will actually carry stuff, can be serviced anywhere and the cost of parts and repairs is a lot lower. A Toyota Yaris is even smaller and a better all round car. But if you want super small the Toyota iQ Even a Kia Rio with quality no better than American cars is overall a better car. No, I do not work for Toyota. Myself I have a Ford Focus but I do not like the new ones.

Before we switched to just a Volvo V70, my wife and I had a car each, I had a Boxster and she had a Toyota Yaris. When we decided to switch to just one family car (and my bike to the station) we sold my car and gave the Yaris to my Mum. We had the Yaris (5 door, 1.3l) for a couple of years with trips up to the Lake District (with four people and a 50kg dog on one trip) and regular 40 mile daily commute. Mum has had it for about 9 years now and it has just tipped over 100,000 miles with no major issues. There was a leak at one point from the air conditioning so it had to be regassed and it has gone through some new tires over the years. I’ve bought one for my cousin and my mother in law has the automatic version (but I’m not so keen). The five door has plenty of space (and knee room for someone 6 foot 2). It happily fits two large car seats in the back or three adults (but that is a bit more of a squeeze). The mother in law regularly transports a travelling theatre lighting rig and step ladder in hers. My tuba (Eb Bass) fitted in the back of ours. It has transport more than the odd Billie bookcase from IKEA when we were just furnishings our flats. So not a sports car but it will happily do 80mph on the motorway (cough or so I’m told). Chuckable round country roads, cheap to run and insure and so far all three have been very reliable. My little sister has a Toyota IQ which she uses on a daily 120 mile round trip commute weekdays. This can fit her, me and the two kids but NO luggage. She has taken both kids on a camping trip in it but she has a small tent. —- Old Answer — What do you need it to do? Are you just looking for a fuel efficient second hand car to transport you short distances at the lowest cost. Do you need something that will allow you to transport your canoe on the roof. Having just gotten back from the LA Auto Show press preview, it remains clear that Honda still has not found the mojo it has lost over the past few product cycles. It's relatively easy to compare the two companies, apples to apples, because of their common heritage, comparable models, and shared market goals. It's not that Toyota just beats Honda in one segment and takes advantage of this one lead, it's that ,Toyota outpaces Honda in spades in nearly every factor. Honda's Inability to Replace a Lost Market One major factor is Honda's inability to stay ahead of trends. We all remember the riced-out VTECs roaring down the suburban asphalt in the late 90's, early aughts. Where are they now? Take a walk around SEMA, the world's largest aftermarket auto show, and these over-the-top import-styles are derided as gauche. With the "rice rocket" is no longer in style, the excitement of a Honda as a blank canvas is gone. What was the hottest sport compact at SEMA this year? None other than Toyota... er... Scion's FR-S. FR-S, Tuner Challenge at SEMA 2012 Where Have All the Children Gone? , Honda, Toyota, Nissan, these are brands that young buyers are drawn to due to their low maintenance costs, high resale value and multitude of packages for any price point. Young people today have less income to spend on cars, are less brand-loyal, and are looking for vehicles that will not only last, but stay cool 10 years down the line. They want choices when they walk onto the lot. For those of us Millenials still driving our first cars from when we were 16, we see our first "real" purchase a style statement. What's down there at the bottom of Honda's lineup? Honda Fit. Under $20k, you've got Civic, Insight and CR-Z (just barely). Prius C bringing hybrid to the masses Toyota's under $20k lineup has more than 2 times as many options. Toyota offers Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, the new Prius c, and a small cab version of the Tacoma pick-up. All of Scion's models except the FR-S can be had for under that price point: iQ, tC, xB, xD. Scion's engagement marketing focused on college and first-time-buyers has already begun to pay dividends in lifetime brand loyalty building. Like a Truck, Truck, Truck, Speaking of trucks, Honda offers the Ridgeline. Yep. The line sold 50,000 a year at its peak in 2006. By comparison, Tacoma sells 100,000 a year or more. Tacoma and Tundra are the 5th and 6th best selling trucks on the market, with Ridgeline coming in at a modest 12th. Options here, again, are key for the pickup market. The aftermarket for Taco's, FJ, Tundra is flourishing. Outside of the US, people LOVE the Hilux (from Toyota), one of the most affordable pickups out there. Where's the Fun?, Remember the Honda S2000? The new Mazda Miata is a gentle reminder of what you can't get from Honda anymore: a thrill. The CR-Z is a unique take from Honda, with a 6-speed manual hybrid. But it's still a hybrid, powered by a 1.5 liter 4-cyl. Meanwhile, Akio Toyoda has called for cars built with EMOTION. His appreciation for BMW and his racing past are taking the brand places. FR-S isn't a Supra, but it IS a 6-speed, rear-wheel drive sport platform that will (JUST ANNOUNCED) get a TRD Supercharger around Q2 of 2013. A relaunched Avalon, the V6 Camry with a 268 HP 3.5L, Lexus IS F, IS C... Waku doki indeed. Not your Grandma's Avalon. In the Supercar category, Acura brings us the NSX, which stacks up against Lexus' LF-A but already feels behind the newly launched LF-CC and LF-LC concepts. 2014 Acura NS-X Lexus LF-LC Innovation, Here's one place where Honda comes in close. They get excellent marks for their innovations and utilization of Compressed Natural Gas, Hydrogen + Fuel Cell technology, Electric Vehicles and so on. They really are leading the way of the future and putting money into technology that will hopefully not stay proprietary and change the way we drive forever. Honda FCX Hydrogen Fuel Cell But as far as access to hybrid technology, the advantage still goes to Lexus. Acura launched their first hybrid, the ISX for the 2013 model year. Meanwhile, Lexus offers 5 hybrid options, including the CT 200h (Prius platform), ES (Camry platform), RX, GS and LS. Out here in California, Prius is the NUMBER ONE selling model, ahead of Camry. Toyota is also partnered with Tesla Motors, particularly on the RAV4 EV, which starts at the immodest price of ~$50,000. But that kind of partnership will pay dividends down the entire product line. Malta has a very varied car market, with most of the popular brands having a strong presence here. When it comes to models, I dont think there is any particular one with a large enough lead to make a good list, though I can give the brands you would see the most on the islands. Toyota - most common cars by far. Models like the Vitz/Yaris and Aygo are ubiquitous, and others like the Rav4 and IQ are pretty common. This is the brand most seen on the roads in Malta. VolksWagen - Most likely to take second place in popularity. Golfs and Polos, especially the pre-2014 models, are very common in the islands. These cars are pretty plentiful on the islands and would be seen alot, but not as much as Toyotas. Fiat - Relatively common in the islands, you'll definitely see a few in your daily commute. Fiat 500s (new design, not the classic) are quite commonly seen in many villages, as well as other models of cars. Ford - Similar popularity to Fiat, Ford has a near monopoly on transport vehicles (minivans and such) with the Transits, old and new, making up the vast majority of school vans aswell as company delivery vans. They are also quite common for normal individual cars, especially smaller city models. BMW - Relatively common brand, a lot of Maltese people see these vehicles as status symbols for some reason, leading to them becoming quite a regular sight on the island, particularly in the harbour area (Centre-East) of the main island. Driving in Malta you will likely see a decent number of these cars, both new and old models, everyday. Other brands can be found just as, and in some cases, more than those in this list, but those brands would mostly be old (pre 2008 at the latest, in quite a few cases pre 2000) cars that have gone through a number of owners and are often first cars for new drivers, while this question asks for newer cars. NOTE: with the exception of Toyota, this list is not in any particular order, as I said the market and ownership is quite varied, and the only clearly leading brand right now would be Toyota.
