Question: ,“Weren't air cooled cars with gasoline heaters, like Volkswagen Beetle and Chevrolet Corvair terribly dangerous for the occupants?” I installed a Samba gasoline heater in a 1960 VW Beetle. The heater was mounted in the luggage compartment under the hood over the right wheel well and directly in front of the glove box seen in the above photo. The heater drew gasoline from the car’s front mounted fuel tank. It consisted of a pulse jet burner, a heat exchanger, and a blower that sent heated fresh air though a hole cut in the car just above the front passenger’s legs. The exhaust gasses from the heater were exhausted through a hole cut into the right wheel well. Note that the heater and back side of the dash shown in the above photo as well as the floor of the trunk were both covered with fiber board in a VW. The heater was operated by a knob installed just to the right of the car’s ash tray. Turning the knob to the right turned the rather noisy unit on. Pulling out the knob increased the temperature. The Samba heater was very effective even in very cold weather. That was helpful, as the one thing that the little underpowered car could do well was operate in deep snow; but the standard VW heater, which scavenged heat from the exhaust manifold and had NO BLOWER (It pretended to get airflow off of the engine cooling fan.) and produced less heat than a pet gerbil was essentially useless. As the heat exchanger separated the combustion process from the cabin air and the exhaust gases were vented into the right front wheel well, no fumes from the heater entered the cabin. The Samba gas heater, which burned very little fuel, was safer to operate when the car was stationary than the conventional hot water heaters on water cooled cars on which the need to run the engine and a leaking exhaust system or back drafts could allow carbon monoxide to enter the passenger compartment. The gas heater on the Corvair was similar. Note that both of these gasoline heaters are really copies of the American Stewart-Warner South Wind car heater from the 1930s.
Is the Chevrolet Corvair the worst car ever made?
Not even close… The Corvair was actually a pretty decent little economy car in its day. It was lightweight, had adequate room, a decent-sized trunk (in front) and got reasonable fuel mileage. The early problems highlighted by Ralph Nader were mostly exaggerated, but definitely had some truth to them. While the car could be made to spin, flip and crash if pushed hard enough, the vast majority of owners simply didn’t drive them like that. My family in the 1960’s did own a Corvair. It was a pretty spartan automobile, with no strong points going for it. It wasn’t fast, good looking or good handling. It also frequently had the faint odor of burning oil, no doubt caused by an oil leak coming from the back of the car. However I’ve seen and owned far worse cars than the Corvair. One was a car my first wife had when we were married. It was a Mercury Monarch. Despite regular maintenance, within a few months, virtually every single major component failed, including the engine, transmission and brakes. It was horrible and we eventually had to have it towed out of our driveway. Yugo also comes to mind as one of the worst cars. Others include the Chevy Vega, Chevy Chevette, Ford Pinto and numerous Daewoo and Isuzu cars I’ve seen, before they exited the U.S. market. The Corvair is definitely not at the bottom of the heap…

What is the engine power of the 1962 Chevrolet Corvair?
It varied by options. The base engine was rated at 80 hp, with a manual transmission. The automatic transmission car got 95 hp. The high-performance turbocharged engine was rated at 150 hp (Chevy and Olds were the first factory turbos in the US, in 1961, with ZERO electronics OR wastegates! Detonation was controlled with a mechanical ignition system pressure-retard. Boost was controlled by fixed turbine size.)

This book and Mr Nader pretty much ruined any future for the car and it was dropped from the chevy line.

I owned one, a convertible that My dad and I restored. It had a 2.7 liter air cooled flat six factory turbocharged 4spd manual. The turbo was sluggish to spool up but when it did, it meant business. Remembered passing a big rig on a country road starting the pass at about 45 mph and as I moved back to my Lane in front of the truck I glanced at the speedo reading 90 mph. Mine looked just like this one.. It had modest gearing and a low red line of about 5800 which limited the top speed to about 120mph, if the fan belt stayed on. But at 150 hp, the Spyder option offered 40 more horses then the 110 version and 55 over the standard 95 hp. There was also a buzzer that sounded if your head temp reached 350f and it was time get your lead foot off the gas for a bit!
Should the Chevrolet Corvair be permitted on the road again? If not, why?
Corvair’s aren’t exactly noted for being safe cars. I don’t think any major car company would ever WANT to market a car as poorly designed as the Corvair in 2019 so the question doesn’t need an answer. But there’s nothing to stop GM from designing a new car and CALLING it a Corvair, other than the poor reputation associated with the name. It would sell about like winter coats in Miami on the Fourth of July.
