What is the best British car of all time?

I have (had) skin in the game on this one, so here is my thruppence… My first ever car, bought off my grandad for £50 in 1979. A Ford Cortina Mk1. Fortunately it fell apart after I had owned it for 6 months. My second car, in 1980 I entrusted my life savings of over £300 to my Dad to pick me up a car at auction. I was very specific, I wanted a VW beetle, nothing else. Unfortunately he came back with this, an Austin Allegro. I never forgave him 🤣 My third car, bought in 1983 for £800, a Landrover 88 MkII. This car was the love of my life. I should never have sold it. There have been newer cars, better cars, more comfortable cars, faster cars, German, Italian, French, Japanese and even British cars. Luxury, sports, family and even muscle cars, but there was never anything like as cool or as much fun as my Landy. I should never have sold it (did I say that already?). You do dumb stuff when you are 21 😢

As a police officer, what was the first cruiser you drove?

When I joined Kent County Constabulary in 1970, in my home town the Ford Cortina Mk1 estate was used as the ‘panda’ car. To my disappointment, on being posted to Margate, I found that we used the Hillman Imp, a 2-door , 875 cc ( 53 cubic inches for our US friends!) rear-engined saloon as our ‘panda’ car. Trying to get a fighting drunk into the back of one of those was a definite art! Metros? Rubbish!

The high end cars tend to own you in the sense that you are forever worrying about where to park them and you can’t drive them at speed on the road. A Lola T70. Porche 917. Ferrari GTO. Lamborghini Muria. Bugatti Royale. Mini Spint. Lotus Elite MK1. Lotus Cortina MK1. Ford Cortina MK2 Savage. And another Lola T70, the one with the Aston Martin engine.

What is an experience you had while in a car you’ll never forget?

Many years ago, a friend of mine bought a car. It was a Mk1 Ford Cortina. For those unfamiliar, it’s similar to this:- They come in 1300cc, 1500cc and sporty versions. The Sporty versions had a Lotus Coventry Climax engine which was generally used for Motor Racing, Rallies etc. The Police also used these types of cars because they were blindingly fast. Tony’s had a Chevy Corvette Stingray engine! V8, Twin Carburettors. Therefore, a bit quicker than your average police car. One night, after the bars closed, he asked us if we’d like a ride. Some wholeheartily agreed. some reluctantly did. We went from Central Woolwich, South-East London, up the Woolwich road towards Eltham, also in South-East London. Halfway there, we passed the Shooters Hill Police Station. At 155 Mph! They stopped us on the A2, going out of London into North Kent, at Falconwood with a heavy road block. When we stopped, the first cop that came to the window says to Tony… “What the F++K you got under the bonnet?” Tony pops the bonnet and shows them. A substantial crowd gathers, Cops from all over South-East London and North Kent are turning up to see this beast. They’re discussing the performance of this thing and Tony is giving them a run down on it. My Brother and I, together with our friend Paul, who is sitting on the front passenger seat, are sitting quietly thinking… “Any minute now we’re gonna get nicked! Any minute…” They all got back in their cars and drove off. Suddenly we’re all alone. We took it a little careful after that. 40 years later, it still gives me the shudders thinking about it!

What car have you sold that you would pay double to get back?

I sold my Ford Cortina 200GXL and took a 1966 Cortina Mk1 2 door GT in part exchange. I rebuilt the engine after a piston blew. I changed all the bearings, shells and piston etc.. After it was ‘run in' for next 500 miles I put my foot to the floor and … woof!. It went like a rocket and performed better than the 2000GXL. I regret selling it when I moved north. Would be worth a fortune now but so would the Ford Consul Capri GT I had before the GXL.

What cars owned by your family many years ago do you wish you had now?

Ford Cortina mk1 and mk5, Ford Capri, Lotus Cortina, Original Mini Cooper S (numerous) and Ford Puma (that was mine)

What vehicle was used by people 50 years ago?

1969?, well I had one of these for fun, and my employers provided one of these for me to do my job with, and tucked away in the back of the garage was this relic of my student days, Austin Healey Sprite Mk1, Ford Cortina Mk 1, Lambretta 150. We call those the “Good Old Days”.

What are stereotypes of drivers of various car brands?

FORD managed to get all the stereotypes into one brand, well actually in a lot of cases one model and a lot of variants on the same theme. This was despite naming two of the later models after pornographic magazines popular at the time in England. So technically I might not be answering the question as framed but I think for the sake of historical record I should at least tell you how it was done. It was sheer marketing genius and it could only have worked in the UK where the class system and snobbery was and probably still is extant. Ford were extremely clever in the 70’s and 80’s and they were the market leaders in the small, medium and full size cars in what was known as the fleet market. That is the company car which until taxed out of existence in the 90’s and 00’s was a valuable perk for any employee. They started with this. The MK1 Ford Cortina. It proved to be very successful and was sold in 2 or 4 door and estate car variants. Then they had the MKII Cortina They had the model as with the MKI in various trim levels but it really was not until the MKIII that they really started to exploit the niches in British company hierarchy and make a model for every level. So first Engines: 1300, 1600 and 2000 Body styles: 2 door, 4 door and Estate Trim levels: Base, L , GL, and Ghia. So you could tell where everyone was within the company pecking order. Bottom rung pool car: Base 1300 version Sales representative: 1600 L model Middle management: 1600 GL model Top flight management 2000 Ghia Now there were subtle variations available for some favored employees but the bottom line was that badge on the back, none, L, GL, Ghia. It put you firmly in your place and was very important. Finally Ford realized what was going on and it engaged in a battle plan to capture the company sector and they had the jump on most other manufacturers. So if you look the advertising was aimed at all those stereotypical company drivers and pandered to their oneupmanship. The whole thing really got into gear in the 80’s and 90’s These were the cars and if you looked at the badge you knew who was going to be driving it and where they fitted in society and the company hierarchy. Ford Fiesta Ford Escort Ford MKV Cortina There you have it then the complete Ford range in th 80’s from Fiesta through Escort to the Cortina, two of them named after Porno mags oddly but they encompassed every strata within any business and there was a model to suit everyone. Except of course the owner of the company or Chairman who would not be seen dead in a Ford car so he had a Jaguar a Mercedes or a BMW.
