What can I say about Hyundai? Hyundai cars are made for comfort, premium, and luxury. Hyundai is not like it's Japanese competitors that their cars has a wide variety in economy, utility, and performance segments. What do I mean by that? If you notice Hyundai don't have sports cars that competes with the JDM cars like Skyline, Supra, Skyline GTR, RX7, and other JDM performance cars. Yes, they have sports and performance cars like the Genesis Coupe, Tiburon, Veloster but its aftermarket support is not strong like the JDM . If you notice Hyundai is not that active in motorsports like its Japanese and European competitors well they once joined the WRC. If you prefer a affordable premium than the overrated Japanese brands car maybe you can consider a Hyundai. If we talked about the market of Hyundai here in my country which is Philippines, what I can say they have a good market and they are one of the selling brands here in Philippines. Hyundai is quite new in our market because they just started being available in our market during the late 90s to early 2000s which is during that time Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi is dominating the sales. Hyundai stepped up on their game in our market during the mid 2000s when the Tucson, Santa Fe, Starex, Accent, Elantra was available in our country. What I like in Hyundai is their CRDI engine found in their vans and SUVs like yhe Starex, Tucson, Santa Fe, the CRDI engine has a good performance and you will feel you are like driving a European car since the CRDI engine of Hyundai and Kia is developed in Europe. If you asked me if I have the money to buy a Fortuner, Montero Sport or a Santa Fe, I will prefer the Santa Fe. When it comes to long term reliability, they improved in their modern cars which is their mid 2000s sold here in Philippines. According to owners who owns a Hyundai for the long time based on their experience their Hyundai is reliable overall with proper maintenance. It is not true that Hyundai are crap which is true when we talked about most of their 90s models. The Hyundai Accent CRDI is popular among taxis and transport apps like Grab here in Philippines. I rode a lot of Hyundai Accents when I ride the cab and Grab and most of the Accent CRDI I rode have over 200k in its odo and according to the driver Hyundai is reliable based on their experience.
I can proudly say I was apart of the “Rice” generation that was influenced by the The Fast and the Furious franchise It’s a pity I don’t have more photos but camera phones where pretty crappy back then. If you were around Newcastle, NSW about 10 odd years ago and in the tuner scene, you’ll probably remember the “Downside-up” Excel with the airbrushed flames. Back then we couldn’t afford the cult classics like the skyline, supra, rx7, wrx or evolutions. We had to make do with whatever piece of crap we had laying around, and that was the beauty of it. Buying an $800 shitbox and turning it into something special. Looking back now I roll my eyes at the idea of modifying a Hyundai Excel, but it was bloody fast at the time. Despite the outrageous bodykit, the red underglow. Downside-up had a lot going on under the bonnet. I can’t fully remember the complete spec list but these are some of the things I had done to it to make it stand out from the crowd: Custom forged pistons 15:0 : 1 taken out to 1.00mm oversize Custom Forged light weight H Beam Conrods New cams Bigger valve springs plazmamann throttlebody Bosch 725cc injectors Ported head SAS turbo kit (I think it was a T66) Mishimoto fmc K&N Pod filter 2.5in straight pipes, muffler and cat delete. 6 point roll cage wrapped in fluro orange foam pool noodle. Rear disc brake conversion and larger front discs Hydraulic handbrake Exedy heavy duty clutch K-Sport coil overs Stiffer rear sway bar stripped rear portion of the interior from the back seats to the boot. Fully sick monster tacho with a huge shift light. To this day I have no idea why I didn’t just spend all that money on something better to start off with but I had a pretty strong bond with my Excel. Ludicrous is a nice way to describe it.
I drove a Hyundai Accent for a few years. It was a car I could afford; love writing a check and paying in full rather than going in debt. prior to that I drove a 1962 VW Ghia. Maybe a little bigger than the Hyundai. My oldest brother drove a Nissan RX7 back in the 80s. What’s behind the question?
Aha - a little more refined now. Your condition of 4 seats makes it very tough to narrow down (from your other question) but some cars I would recommend are: (not all are exactly similar to a z4 because cars in that class all have two seats like the Porsche Boxter, Lotus Elise, and so on) Ford Mustang Mitsubishi Eclipse (the newer generation ) Infiniti G37 Coupe Mazda RX7 Hyundai Genesis Coupe An old Jaguar XKR Two sweaters: Porsche Boxter Nissan 350z Mazda Miata BMW Z3
Cars I have owned: 1996 Mercury Sable 1984 Mazda RX7 1984 Nissan 300ZX 1981 Datsun 280ZX 1998 Nissan 200SX 1999 Nissan Sentra 2001 Ford Escape 2000 Dodge Dakota 1987 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (Stretch) 2013 Hyundai Accent 2017 Hyundai Elantra The Mercury and the Mazda both required a lot of maintenance. The Ford Escape developed a few issues while it was still under warranty, they were handled very quickly by the dealer and I was satisfied with that vehicle. My 2 Hyundai’s have been excellent cars.
There is a company called Seasucker that makes awesome rack systems that can be used on any car. I’ve used mine from everything from our Expedition to the Rx7
When I was shopping and ended up buying Honda’s or Acuras, the Mazda’s just didn’t seem as good straight up for the models I was looking at. I did consider an RX7 at one point, but chose not to get any new car and keep using the old one for longer. When helping kids shop, tried Mazda, Honda, Suburu and Hyundai, and we didn’t like the Honda or Mazda at the time, and ended up with one of each of the others. One concrete advantage is that Honda has more dealers than the others mentioned (but less than Toyota).
Only when you need one. Keep an eye on tire wear. I currently own 3 vehicles that have never had an alignment. I bought all of them new myself and still own and drive them. 2002 Silverado 72k miles , 2006 Mazda 3 sedan 112k miles , 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan 54k miles. I have also owned several vehicles in the past that never need an alignment. Now for front drive cars like the Mazda 3, you have to rotate the tires to keep them from feathering. But I owned a 86 Mazda RX7 once that was balanced so well, I was advised by the tire shop to not rotate my tires because they were wearing so perfectly.

Hyundai genesis coupe .caption applies to the ones below . below the caption that one was a 2007 concept . The genesis coupe debuted in 2010 . The second pic under that is a 2010–12 track version . The bottom one is a 2013–16 track version . 2016 was the last year they were on the market. All the ones above this caption are random tricked out genny coupes. I cant have just one. I love sports cars period! Gran Turismo the 1997 original on ps1 made me fall in love with them . Although I had my hotwheels collection growing up. My Hyundai genesis coupe is definitely one of my favorite Sports coupes. It’s not a “true” sports car by definition . There is a reason I bought 2 of them. It’s in the same category and almost exact price range as ,camaro , mustang, 370z ,wrx etc. Comes in 2.0t 4 cyl and 3.8 v6 engine types. Mine is a copper color . Ford mustang, Dodge viper, Toyota supra, Ferrari 458 italia, Porsche 911, Audi R8 , Mazda Rx7 .Love them all And so on
