รีวิว Q&A toyota j engine

Why is India buying a 30-year-old 4th generation Rafale fighter jet when China is ready with its 5th generation Chengdu J-20, which is not only an advanced stealth fighter but cheaper as well?

The Rafale is an excellent aircraft. For sure. Yes- the Typhoon night have been slightly better- but at a far higher cost (procurement, infrastructure, cost per flight hour). And: the Rafale might be (besides of the F-35 and maybe the much smaller Gripen) the jet fighter with the most advanced avionics! The J-20? Think about a 2 generation old Toyota Camry which body is just shaped to look 2020! The engines of the J-20: old, smoky and not on the required performance level! The avionics? Far less advanced than Rafale! The radar? No AESA for sure at this point. And stealth? Other than it has a reduced RCS due to internal weapons storage it is also not really stealthy (probably very similar to the Rafale!). Agility? Rafale kicks the ass of the J-20!Seems that the Indians have been clever- if they now just can pull off the decision and really purchase significant numbers of the Dassault! Some updates: The Chinese are moving fast to introduce new engines (domestically engineered). It is still a big question, if those engines are as capable as Russian engines - which are already behind the newer generation of western engines! But yes - the Chinese move at incredible speed of developments. Also AESA - seems, that the Chinese also introduced an AESA system. Again - it is no match of the latest Raytheon systems (like the AN/APG 81 of the F-35. But nonetheless it is important to note, that also their avionics are improving quickly. And to all the chatter in the comments about the body: The J-20 is mainly made out of aluminum and titanium - a surprisingly small amount of composite material. This is probably due to the fact of its origin as J-9IV-II prototype? I don’t really know - it seems odd, because their J-11 has already more composite material than their Russian counterparts, hence it seems, that China also progresses fast in the ability to use composite materials. But anyway - it is not very stealthy for sure - and still doesn’t have the “wonder” capabilities. And yes - even the Chinese themselves have identified a big lack of pilot ability. That means not only, that they lack behind Western ,and Indian, air forces - but it also means to a certain point, that their avionics are nothing compared to the latest Western systems (situational awareness).

Are Lexuses really cheaper to maintain and they break less often than BMW/Mercedes, or is it just a myth?

I bought my 2003 Lexus IS300 with six miles on it. It died with 296,000 on it. I had to replace tires, batteries, wiper blades and brake pads. At 140,000 I replaced the timing belt and water pump. The parts were sometimes expensive as “ Lexus” parts, but sometimes a less expensive Camry part would work. But in 13 years and 296,000 miles, very few things wore out or had to be replaced j. Toyota makes the most dependable cars on earth, and one thing about owning a Toyota , when it is time to buy a new Toyota , you can trade it in on a new Toyota for $500 at the dealership , then the dealer will turn around and sell it for $3000 on their used car lot. Or you can put it at the end of your driveway and put a FOR SALE sign on it and sell it for $3000. Someone will ALWAYS be willing to buy your used Toyota in a private sale when you want a new car. There is a reason why you always see immigrants driving older toyotas . When you have risked your life to come to the USA , do backbreaking work for minimum wage working 2 or 3 jobs a week, every dollar counts. When you have saved $2500 and want to buy a used car , the last thing you want to do is repair it constantly or worry about the car functioning . So many Hispanic, Asian , or Carribean Immigrants seek used Toyotas, even a ten or 15 year old Toyota with 200,000 miles will sell, because people know that the car can easily reach 300,000 if properly maintained. Try selling a 12 year old Buick or Pontiac with 200,000 miles on it, you may get $700 if you get anything . A ten year old Toyota with 200,000 miles on it is a great deal at $2500–3000 for both the seller and buyer. It is much harder to sell ANY car with 300,000 miles, so if you don't sell it at 200,000 you can choose to keep driving it. A Toyota owner at a gas pump next to mine last week said his 4Runner had 370,000 miles on it . But even with a great reputation like Toyota , a car with 400,000 miles on it will be hard to sell, so when you see a person driving a 20 -25 year old Toyota it's because they crossed that imaginary line where no one will buy it because it has 400,000 miles on it but it still runs so they don't want to part with it. At a recent gathering of friends from University , we looked outside in the parking lot and of 9 cars owned by us, 7 were Toyota/Lexus. If you are an educated and informed car buyer of the middle class, who makes enough that they can afford to choose between Honda, Nissan and Toyota and the American cars, but not rich enough to not care about the cost of a vehicle, Toyota is the clear choice. Some people argue that a Hyundai has the same options and costs $20,000 to the Toyota that is $33,000, or the Nissan or Honda is $28,000, but the dependability of Toyota will make it cheaper due to less repair costs over the life of the car. If you can affford to sign the deal, you know that you are ultimately getting a better deal over the next 10 years. But someone with just a little less income or less belief in Toyota will go with the Nissan or Hyundai, because of the lower sales price, unable to see the future savings in less repairs. The pickup truck market shows Toyota Tacomas holding their value at an incredible rate. A Tacoma, originally 35,000, with 200,000 miles on it, 10 years old, will sell for $12,000. A 10 year old Dodge with 200,000 miles on it , originally $45000 , will sit on a used car lot unsold , with an asking price of $5000. And it's very hard to buy a used Toyota truck, because people just don't want to get rid of them . A 20 year old Toyota 4x4 truck will sell in a few days. The Japanese car designers use simpler designs than the Germans . Imagine a Swiss or German made Antique cuckoo clock, the elaborate and complicated designs were made with pride, the Europeans seem to enjoy making things difficult for a mind not as smart as the engineer to understand. So parts may be harder to get to or hidden away, but the Japanese designers use basic designs with high quality parts , that may not ever need to be replaced but if they do can easily be reached, but sometimes the bigger, meatier hands of an American mechanic may have a hard time reaching certain parts in cramped places. Mercedes and BMW are classic old names in the automotive world, and their once quality workmanship created a reputable name that has been declining in quality for years. They are difficult to repair and need more upkeep and maintenance than a Toyota/Lexus, which has been the name in dependability for 30 years and counting. Once great, quality cars that established the names BMW and Mercedes-Benz have declined, yet the names and the quality associated with them is what carries the brand today, as people who purchase these brands aren't concerned about the cost of repair bills, and at the dealership they pamper you with fine coffee and loaner cars so you hardly realize you and the service manager see each other more than you see your kids. For someone middle class, who can afford a nicer car, but is frugal enough to care about repair costs, and understands that a car is to get you from point A to point B, and if it's in the shop you can't get to point B, there is only one brand. Spend the little extra on the bill of sale, and remember that the consumer who paid $10,000 less for a Hyundai will be in the shop and will end up paying that $10,000 to the shop in repair costs anyway, and in ten years will be car shopping again as you enjoy having no car payment and practically no repair bills for the next 15!years. “ Who can ask for anything more? TOYOTA!!! The Author and three of his Toyotas/Lexus vehicles. The pickup I bought for $2900 and sold ten years later for $3000. The Lexus bought with 6 miles and the engine died with 296,000 miles on it, and the 4Runner still going strong at 12 years old.

Have you ever put 100,000 miles or more on a car that you now or used to own?

Yes—I have a 20-year-old Toyota Camry that I bought when it was a year old, but I found out two days ago that it had come to the end of its useful life. As ,Donovan Minckler, said in his answer, “Should a vehicle’s upkeep become more expensive than payments on a new one, it is time for a change.” I loved my Camry, and up until a blown head gasket this week, it had served me faithfully with barely a problem, and it was still a pleasure to drive. It has about 150,000 miles on it, at least 130,000 of which were put on it by me. It was finally starting to look like it needed a bit of a facelift, though, and it needed new tyres and a few other minor adjustments, so it was time to move on. I chose a ‘new’ (2012) car in mint condition yesterday and I can’t wait to pick it up from the dealer this week after it has had a few modifications. This question has given me a chance to show a picture of my new car, which will probably serve me another ten or fifteen years: I’m a huge fan of Toyotas because of their longevity. My husband had one that was nearly 30 years old and was still running without any obvious issues until it finally gave up and caught fire in the middle of the freeway (dust near the engine was ignited by a spark). As long as a car is in good condition and running well, I don’t care whether it’s new or not—if it’s still going strong with 100,000 miles on the clock, I’ll still be driving it.

What does it mean when Costco says it only sells "Top Tier" gasoline? How does it differ from regular gas?

OK… the problem is that most people (at least in the U.S.) don’t understand where their gasoline comes from. Back in the “old days” (prior to the early 1960s), each gasoline brand had their own refineries, and they delivered the gasoline that they made (usually by rail) to their own branded depots, where it was then delivered to their branded service stations for sale. So, if you bought Esso gasoline, it came from a Standard Oil refinery, got stored at a Standard Oil terminal, and was sold ,only ,at Esso service stations. This all changed by the time we were half-way through the 1960s. Big independent fuel terminals were built that collected gasoline from multiple refinery sources (usually delivered by either ship or underground pipeline). The gasoline in the storage tanks at these terminals could be a mix of fuel produced at ARCO, Standard, Texaco, Shell, BP, or other refineries. So basically, the ,gasoline, that you buy today is all pretty much the same stuff… and just because it came from a Chevron branded station doesn’t mean that it was produced at a Chevron / Standard refinery. Today, the only difference between different brands of gasoline is the ,detergent package ,that is put into the fuel,. U.S. EPA has set minimum levels of detergent for motor fuels… this is the ,generic, package that you get in gasoline purchased from discount stations. There is also a second-level generic package (more detergent) that is often found in the gasoline you buy at national retail outlets, such as Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and others. Then there are the ,branded packages,… each major brand has it’s own proprietary blend of detergents that are in the gasolines that you purchase from their branded stations. The detergent package, and ethanol, is added to the basic gasoline at the terminal, as the delivery truck is being loaded… the driver selects which station(s) the fuel is going to be delivered to, and the dispensing computers pick the correct detergent package (,i.e.,, draw from the appropriate storage container) and inject it into the gasoline as it flows from the storage tank to the truck.. The brand-name gasolines generally have more detergent, and that detergent is a proprietary formulation that the oil company engineers have developed and tested. Top Tier, is just a detergent package specification developed by BMW, GM, Honda, and Toyota… a minimum level of detergent that these automakers determined would keep the fuel systems of their cars clean. Top Tier is a voluntary certification program that many retailers of gasoline subscribe to… they certify that the fuel they sell meets Top Tier specifications. So, is it worth the money to buy Top Tier ? You’ve got 5 choices with modern (post 1997) gasoline-fueled vehicles: Buy whatever gasoline is cheapest, and pay to have someone do a fuel system / fuel injector cleaning every 3 - 6 years (typically around $180 - $220), Routinely buy whatever gasoline is cheapest, but occasionally (e,.g.,, once every month or two) fill up with a Top Tier fuel, Buy whatever gasoline is cheapest, and periodically use a detergent additive such as Techron to remove accumulated deposits and varnish in your fuel system, Use only Top Tier gasoline, Buy whatever gasoline is cheapest, period… and have engine performance deteriorate with time. The choice is yours… and I suppose it in part depends on how long you plan on keeping your car. By the way, Chevron’s ,Techron, ,does, work as claimed… it is one of the few fuel additives that is really worth buying and using (most additives are snake oil that might even damage your engine,*,). You can get the benefits of Techron by either occasionally filling up with Chevron or Texaco gasoline, or by occasionally (6,000 - 8,000 miles?) adding a can of the stuff to your fuel tank. The standard Techron product (least expensive; around $ 6 for a 20 gallon tank treatment) is for routine use. There is also a much more concentrated (and expensive; around $ 12 for a 20 gallon tank treatment) Techron product that is intended for cleaning fuel systems that are known to be dirty (as evidenced by performance problems). [Disclosure: I do not, and never have, worked for Chevron or any other Standard Oil company… I’ve just been driving and maintaining all types of motor vehicles for the past 50+ years, and know what works and what doesn’t] *, Additives that were developed in the 1950s or 1960s (or earlier), and maybe worked a little bit back then, can not possibly provide any benefit in today’s close-tolerance / high-technology engines. They can’t and don’t do what they say, and pose a high risk for causing damage in modern engines. See more good information about Top Tier fuel in these answers: James Ebersold's answer to What does it mean when Costco says it only sells "Top Tier" gasoline? How does it differ from regular gas? Andrew J Marqueling's answer to What does it mean when Costco says it only sells "Top Tier" gasoline? How does it differ from regular gas? What is the most mind-blowing engineering marvel you know about?

This is easy. The Pyramids of Egypt? Well, okay. But my vote goes to the ,Coral Castle Museum,, constructed entirely of black coral by Ed Leedskalnin using home made hand tools only. It took him 28 years to construct and was done almost entirely in secret. It was a testament to the love of his life, who rejected him the day before their planned nuptials. From the front page of the website: Since it is documented that no one ever witnessed Ed’s labor in building his beloved Coral Castle, some have said he had supernatural powers. Ed would only say that he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids and if he could learn them, you could too. Features of the Coral Castle Museum include a, 9-ton gate that moves with just a touch of the finger,, a Polaris telescope and functioning rocking chairs – all made entirely of stone. We wonder what was the inspiration that could cause a man to spend 28 years to carve a Coral Castle from the ground up using nothing but home made tools. An homage to unrequited love? Perhaps to illustrate ancient sciences that defy gravity? Or maybe just sheer, raw human determination? The Coral Castle is an everlasting mystery to those who explore it. Other than that, I used to work building customized equipment or modifying existing equipment for the physically challenged and the iBOT wheelchair developed by Dean Kamen in partnership with Johnson and Johnson is pretty damn spectacular, if you understand the mobility issues faced by the physically challenged. It was discontinued by Johnson and Johnson because the U. S. FDA labeled it a Class III device, generating insurance issues, and because it cost $25,000 and the Federal Government, through the Americans with Disability Act, would only compensate $6000. So J&J didn’t sell many. But Kamen didn’t give up, redesigning the chair and getting FDA Class II approval AND backing from Toyota! The entire story can be read here (from New Mobility): ,The iBot is Back. Is the Second Time the Charm? Some images from the article: We had a client, Linda, who was born with just stubs for limbs; she did have a partial left hand, which allowed her to operate toggle switches and joysticks. But she had been in a wheelchair her entire life. She worked for the Veterans Administration and she received a grant, through them I believe, to build a custom wheelchair that would enable her to utilize the upper cabinets in her kitchen, like you see in the above image. She contracted with a Texas A & M engineer to design and build the chair and I was present when he delivered it to her. I will never forget the dramatic change that came over Linda - the sweetest damn woman, when she sat in the chair, pushed a joystick, and raised up so she was eye-level with the rest of us. It just completely altered her entire demeanor instantly. It was very dramatic. So I am very happy to see Kamen resolve some of these issues and get the iBOT back on the market. Very happy! But I’m also looking for amazing inventions for the mobile industry coming from Boston Dynamics:

How good are Chinese military jets?

Interesting question. Long answer read till end to understand. If you want a smartphone which would you buy ? State of the art I phone or Samsung or China’s Huawei ? If you need a new car are you going to buy a Geely, Landwind, Dongfeng or you will the best cars on the planet which are from the free world - BMW, Mercedes Benz, Opel, Ford, Peguot, Audi, Chevrolet, Renault, Honda, Mazda, Citreon Toyota, Kia, Nissan Volvo etc because these brands are comfortable, fuel efficient and safe because the manufacturers have been doing this car thing for a very long time some for over or close to 100 years. Have you ever driven a Chinese car ? I have been a passenger, the difference is unmistakable even Steve Wonder will feel it. Below is the Quantum manufactured by Toyota and debuted in 2008. Extremely successful in South Africa, Asia, South America and Australia Used in South Africa for public transport, i love travelling in the Quantum because it is comfortable and noise free. Owners love it because it is a durable and efficient. The engine and gearbox sounds just tell you that this is a work of art. Below is the Chinese’s answer to the Quantum made by Beijing Auto works SA It might look like a Toyota Quantum but its nothing like the real thing. Mechanics including my uncle are making a buck fixing this car. The same company faced hostility when it tried to open a branch because of low quality cars ,Chinese firm drops SA taxi plans, for an earlier product. Chinese Quantum is not yet officially sanctioned ,Taxi bosses ignore alliance Why am i talking about cars when the question is about military jets ? Well if a 65 year old Chinese state owned company can’t come up with a respectable car that will compete with the ones i listed above what are chances that a Chinese state owned company such as Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group can make respectable fighter jets ? Consider that car technology is not as secretive as fighter jet technology so how would China cope with the limited fighter jet tech available when they can’t make use of the abundant car tech to make good cars ? In 2012 i went to Africa Aerospace Defence exhibition. Below is the ,Karakorum 8 ,fighter jet trainer manufactured by Hongdu Aviation Industry Group Ltd a Chinese state owned company. This one is owned by Air Force of Zimbabwe. The picture was taken at the 2010 Africa Aerospace Defence exhibition in Cape Town, South Africa. Two years later the exhibition took place in Pretoria and I attended. I went to the stand below The above is BAe Hawk MK 120 owned by South African Air Force. The pilots were present and taking questions and none had good things to say about the K 8s. Mind you Zimbabwe and South Africa hold training exercises together and get to be up close and personal with each other’s fighters. They all dismissed the K 8s as inferior. One pointed out that it was crammed and uncomfortable to sit in not to mention the poor electronics. I think another said they it had no aircon. To be fair to the Chinese i will say i am not sure if the K 8 was made to compete with the BAe Hawk because comparing them does not seem fair and yet both are fighter trainers. Its like comparing a Range rover to a Landwind. In 2008 a Air Force of Zimbabwe K 8 crashed soon after take off killing both pilots. In 2014 another K 8 crashed. Both crashes had to do with the Chinese engine. Tanzania retired their relatively new K 8s because of crashes. To answer the question, i strongly feel Chinese military jets are not good. If you want single engine light weight multi role fighter jet like the F 16 Fighting Falcon and can’t get one wait till you can get one or buy a Gripen or 2nd hand Mirage 2000s not a Chinese J 10 Vigorous Dragon or J 17 Thunder. If you want a twin engine multi role air superiority fighter jet like the F 15 Eagle and can’t get one wait till you can get it or buy a Su 27/Su30/Mig 35, Euro Fighter Typhoon or Dassult Rafale and stay away from Chinese J 11s. If you want a stealth fighter jet and can’t get a F 35 Lightning wait for Russia’ s Su 57 or Japan’s Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin or even buy an advanced previous generation fighter jet like the ones i just mentioned. Buying China’s so called 5th generation J 20 and J 31 will be disaster. Why are Chinese military jets not good ? Because the Chinese government is making them and its common sense no government on the planet is efficient . See, the American government does not make fighter jets it just puts out a tender in a newspaper inviting private companies to supply fighter jets that should meet a certain criteria. These private companies provide proposals and the American government will shortlist them. Shortlisted candidates will battle it out and one will be selected to produce the fighter jet. This happened in 1981 when it became clear that the Mig 29 and Su 27 were going to be trouble for the F 15 Eagle. Lockheed Martin and Northrop battled it out before Lockheed was choose to supply the ,F 22 Raptor, over, Northrop’s YF23 ,and believe me the loser is also way ahead of China’s J 20 and J 31. While the Chinese government is trying to come up with an indigenous jet engine that is as good as the one produced by American private company General Electric called J79 that powered the F 4 Phantom in 1960, USA has moved on to scramjets - a special kind of jet engine that enables a plane to fly very high up at hyper sonic speeds. In May 2013 an unmanned ,X-51A WaveRider ,reached 4 828 km/h (Mach 5.1. Boeing a private company designed the vehicle and another private company Pratt and Whitney supplied the scramjet engine. Out !
