Is Toyota lagging in electric vehicles?

Is Toyota lagging in electric vehicles? No. Far from it. “But they don’t sell any electric vehicles” you say. AH HA! That’s where you’re wrong, and this is why wording is important. You see, ‘electric vehicle’ is a very vague term… According to the Oxford Dictionary; a vehicle is “A thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car, lorry, or cart.”. Now, if you had said car, that would be a different story, they’re most likely waiting to get it right the first time, since the difference between the use cases of their current offerings and a car for the general consumer are very different. So back to my point. Why aren’t Toyota lagging in EVs? I present you this: “What is this?” you ask. This is a 1967 Toyota FB15, it’s a forklift rated for 1.5 tons, and what makes it relevant to this answer is that it is not just any old forklift… It was the first forklift of it’s kind, it was the first electric forklift… Okay… But how does this mean Toyota isn’t lagging behind? Look at the kinds of MHE you might see in say… A warehouse… This is a BT Pro Lifter Motorised, it has an electric motor to reduce the starting force required to move pallets of stock, particularly heavy pallets. Probably wouldn’t find too many of these out and about though. This is a BT Levio Powered Pallet Truck, you’ll find several variations, some have fixed platforms, some have platforms that can be flipped down, and some have no platforms. If you’re moving stock across a warehouse this is your bread and butter. They’re nippy and move heavy loads effortlessly. You may also find similar looking machines called powered stackers, same sort of thing but they can be used to move stock to/from higher locations. There are also order pickers, which are very similar to ride-on PPTs, though usually have the fork behind the operator. Of course, these are all-electric. This is a BT Reflex R-Series. It’s a very similar concept as the powered stackers, only reach trucks can also extend the forks outwards to access racking that’s two locations deep. Once again, all electric. The Toyota Tracto… You might find this in places that demand such a thing. Good for pulling a train of stock… There are ICE engine options (99% sure the one pictured is ICE, but it’s just there for show), but the electric option is also there as well. The Toyota Traigo HT… Okay, you’re not going to find this in your average warehouse, more like a dock yard, but we’re talking electric forklifts here. There are ICE options here, but the electric option is there from Toyota. Did I mention it’s electric? And finally, your BT Vector A-Series, a VNA truck. I’d hardly call that lagging behind. As far as electric cars go, one may well make the argument that Toyota is lagging behind. However, when you bring all EV’s into the equation, it’s clear that Toyota is actually well ahead of everyone else. How many car manufacturers can say their company has more than 50 years of experience manufacturing electric vehicles? So is Toyota lagging in electric vehicles? The answer is very easily no. When it comes to electric ,vehicles,, Toyota could almost certainly be considered as a leading manufacturer.
