What is the big appeal of driving a Toyota Land Cruiser?

Let’s start with this This is the 1951 BJ25. Toyota took the venerable Willys Jeep, reverse engineered it, fixed a bunch of shortcomings, and started mass producing them. The US Army and the South Korean Army used a pile of them in the Korean War. It was a cobbled together mess, with a chassis from the 3 ton truck, the 3.2 liter in-line six from the 4 ton truck, the suspension bits from the Toyopet, and a body which appears to be made from surplus air conditioning duct (probably not, but still). And you know what? It was insanely reliable. You could not kill it. In response to an inquiry as to the overall durability, Toyota famously responded “we’ll know how long it lasts when the first one wears out”. Fun fact: it’s still around. Now, the astute observer will note that this, and the M38A1 Jeep and the Land Rover Series I all share a certain ,je ne sais quoi. ,They’re rugged. They’re simple. They’re light weight. They are four wheel drive with low power engines but insane gearing which means you can literally drive them anywhere. And the top comes off and the windscreen folds down. What more could you want?? And you know? There’s literally nothing else like them. Now, over time they all grew up. The Jeep left the Army and moved to civilian life, becoming the CJ-2, then 2A, then 3A, then 3B, then CJ-5 then CJ-7 which eventually became the modern Wrangler. Still looks nearly the same. That’s history. That’s lineage. That’s one of the reason people buy Jeeps. The Land Rover moved from the Series 1 to the 2, the 2A, then the 3, which became the Defender with the addition of the V8 engine. It then pivoted into an adjacent space to become a full-bodied four-door fully enclosed “true SUV’, the Discovery, and eventually the more luxe Range Rover. The Land Cruiser went through a similar evolution. The BJ25 became the FJ20, as the B series engine was replaced with the more powerful F-series engine. It became the iconic FJ-40, which was replaced by the FJ-55 - more of a progenitor of the Jeep Wagoneer than further evolution of the original concept. Then came the FJ60 in 1980 which was still incredible off-road yet not unpleasant on pavement. After a decade it was replaced by the FJ80, which was much better tempered around town but equally qualified off-road. The FJ80s also got the Lexus treatment as the LX450, which meant you could off-road in style. That evolution has continued to today’s Land Cruiser, where the nearly $100k price tag makes you wonder just how exactly it’s related to that original BJ25. Until you drive it, off road. Then it’s all clear. In both the Land Rover and the Land Cruiser, the original form factor was abandoned in favor of more market-friendly enclosed bodies. The underpinnings, though? Still pure kick-your-ass-hard off-road truck. If you’re talking about a modern Land Cruiser you’re probably more interested in the 13 cup holders and leather interior and traction control with hill descent…. but you’re also interested in that lineal tie back to the original BJ25. Just like the Jeep guys. Without bugs in your teeth.

Why is the Toyota Land Cruiser better than the Range Rover?

They are different. I’ve owned 3 Toyota Land Cruisers and 1 Range Rover and 2 Land Rover LR4s. I currently drive an LR4. One son in law drives a Land Cruiser. My other son in law drove a Lexus GX for many years (over 150k miles) which is the Land Cruiser Prada version and this year (2020) traded it for a full size Range Rover. We have a lot of Land Cruiser / Range Rover experience in the family. This 2017 Answer is modestly revised in late 2020. The Land Cruiser is mechanically outstanding. Compared to Range Rover and Land Rover products prior to 2010ish, the Land Cruiser crushed the Rover products for mechanical reliability. In the 1990s, this difference was compelling. Maintenance cost is meaningfully higher for routine costs in the RR family versus Land Cruiser. RR/LR oil changes are expensive and brakes are frightfully expensive. But if you own a Land Cruiser or a RR/LR, the cost of maintenance isn’t really an issue. Compared to the LR4, RR Sport and the prior RR SWB, the Land Cruiser seems bulky from the inside. The seats are a little stiffer and the acceleration seems a bit slower. (My son-in-law has a Land Cruiser and I ride in it often). Forget the stats, the RR/LR feels faster on highways (especially the old 5.7 liter V8s). The Land Cruiser has way more after market items that enhance the off road experience or the camping experience. My SIL has may add on’s to his LC almost none of which are available for the RR or LR4. I frequently go off road….mostly beach driving but occasionally in the north Georgia hills. Nothing stops the Land Cruiser. When I had the RR SWB, it didn’t give me the confidence of the Land Cruiser. I currently drive an LR4 and find it as good as the Land Cruiser or maybe a bit better. The RR is competent off road but I’ve had my LR4 with sand over the side steps with no issue. I’d worry just a bit in the RR but probably no issue. We have had the LR4, LC and GX on the beach at the same time with no issues despite deep loose sand. I currently drive a 2016 LR4. I could drive the Land Cruiser but there are a couple of reasons why I don’t: [1] In the Land Cruiser the third row seats stand up on each side of the rear compartment. This takes up space that could be used for cargo and very restricting on cargo width. The LR4 rear seats fold flat into the floor allowing for much more cargo. RR will have even more rear space with it’s flat floor. Land Cruiser 3rd Row Seats stow position: [2] Visibility in the LR4 is much better for the driver than the Land Cruiser. Pillar obstruction is much less. [3] The roof design of the LR4 allows for much more interior daylight. [4] The LR4 HSE LUX interior is nicer. Really. And so is the RR interior. LR4 Interior: Range Rover Interior: It is a small thing but I love the mini fridge in the center console. Land Cruiser Interior: I had an LR4 for 7 years and it had one issue in it’s first year (under warranty) and absolutely no problems otherwise. Living on an island some distance from the dealer, I use a local mechanic and have not had any issue with routine maintenance. For all practical purposes, RR/LR has closed the maintenance gap. I traded my LR4 for another, and this 2016 is the end of the LR4 line. Big decision to make around 2022/23. If you have the opportunity to meet your SUV need with a Land Cruiser, go for it. It is a well made, rock solid vehicle. It just might be my next SUV. RR has discontinued the LR4 and there is no real 7 passenger option for me (don’t get me going on the Discovery). If I were still working in the city, I’d still probably go with the Range Rover. It’s a perfect vehicle … safe, solid, comfortable to drive and a fun driving experience. I suspect it will be the next car for my other S-I-L (2020 update, the Lexus GX was traded for a full size Range Rover). The Land Cruiser and the Range Rover are different. Both are great. Compared to a full size Range Rover, the Land Cruiser is a relative bargain. So on the basis of cost, the Land Cruiser might win. (The Lexus GX is the Land Cruiser Prada in other parts of the world.) But in either case, who really cares about cost. There are other brands that are solid SUVs at far less cost. PS: I notice in Europe that the Land Cruiser is smaller than the USA version of the Land Cruiser. I like this smaller version better. In the USA it is the Lexus GX. Quite nice. Why is Toyota Land Cruiser so reliable?

It’s a Toyota. That’s all that needs to be said. Toyota’s are so well built, being improved on from generation to generation. They kept it simple and didn’t push the boundaries of hp ratings. Ask any mechanic if you can only take one vehicle anywhere desolate…and the majority will answer the Land Cruiser. In case you’re wondering, no I’m not a Toyota fanboy. I currently own two BMW’s (530i and 330i) and a Honda Pilot. Do almost all the work on my car, except engine and tranny swap/rebuild. Used to drive VW, Audi, Toyota, Honda , and Ford. Learned a lot working on the VW and Audi…if you’re wondering, that’s not a compliment. Grateful for the experience, but man, those cars nickeled and dimed me to death. Now I buy cheap used cars (typically German since their resale is in the toilet, but they’re so fun to drive),

What are the reasons to buy Toyota Land Cruiser?

I personally bought mine,(2000 100 Series) after traveling through the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia for 4 days in 2016, seeing hundreds of all model Land Cruisers, mostly 80 and 100 series, along with their Lexus equivalent(LX450,470,570) being absolutely beat on over incredibly tough and rugged terrain with very little maintenance required. Land Cruisers are designed around the concept of a 25 year service life which means more expensive and durable components. The windshield is 2mm thicker on a LC than a standard Toyota and the entire exhaust system is double thick stainless steel to prevent corrosion when submerged in water wandering the wilds of this world. The odometer on our tours 1994 80 Series read almost 700,000Kilometers (~434,000miles) and it was still running strong. Picnic lunch down near the Chilean border in the Atacama desert. I have always liked Land Cruisers from the old FJ’s to the new luxurious trucks they have morphed into but after seeing them in action in such a harsh climate as Bolivia I decided I needed to get myself one to explore the mountains of my new home in Colorado. Here are a few pics of mine: EDIT: I have owned my LC for 3.5 years now and put almost 50,000 miles (~80,000 kms) on it since purchasing it and the only major repair I’ve made was a new radiator at 230,000 miles. Update: I sold my LC100 in the fall of 2020 with 250k miles(~400k kms) before we moved away from Colorado. I got 75% of the purchase price despite beating the piss out of it all over the state for 4 years and having insurance cosmetically total it in the worst recorded hail storm in Colorado history. I miss it everyday… Will be buying another one again. If you’re in the market act soon. The values are rising fast especially as the nice lower mileage ones are getting rarer and rarer as time marches on. To recap: Land Cruisers are incredibly tough, well built cars engineered by Toyota to go hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles over the most unforgiving terrain on Earth needing very little repair and upkeep. Their parts are readily available anywhere Toyota’s are sold, which on this planet is everywhere. My recommendation to everyone is go get a Land Cruiser as soon as possible!! Bonus points for having FOUR 12V!! chargers scattered throughout a vehicle made in 2000.

Which is the better off road truck the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Tacoma?

I’m going to assume you are referring to new Toyota products and not older models. By throwing the Toyota Land Cruiser into the mix, it makes for a wide field of vehicles. The 2019 Land Cruiser is a well-respected vehicle with good to very good off-road performance. It’s also a very large, heavy and luxurious vehicle with a huge pricetag of $85,000. In that respect, it doesn’t really fit well with the two pickups in the lineup. The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup with great power, and excellent off-road performance, especially when it’s equipped with the TRD Pro package, which will give you much better suspension, better traction control and improved off-road performance. The cost of a TRD Pro Tundra is still pretty high, at $49,645. That leaves the Tacoma. In my book, the Tacoma is the darling of this bunch for a couple reasons. One is the narrower wheel track and shorter wheelbase make it better on trails and rocks. It has good approach and departure angles, a good breakover angle and is the lightest vehicle in the bunch, by far. They also offer a TRD Pro package for the Tacoma, and it will set you back $42,660, or about $7000 cheaper than the Tundra. The Tacoma is also available with an excellent manual transmission and the 278 horsepower V6. If it were my choice, I’d go for the Tacoma 4x4 with the TRD Pro package.

The Lexus LX570 is available in all countries under the same name. Lexus GX is not sold in the markets where LC200 is present, though there could be some exceptions due to diesel and gas variants availability. UK and Europe only have diesel based LC200, Australia has both Gas and Diesel LC200, South Africa has more versions than a LC enthusiast can remember. The Prado of Australia, Europe and Africa is 4 Runner in North America, just like LC200 it also goes transformation as per geography, from diesel to gas and so on. So, Toyota sells everything everywhere, you need to solve the puzzle by looking at the specifications and you’ll get the vehicle!

Which 4x4 SUV is better than the Toyota Land cruiser?

Range Rovers are more luxurious, Jeep Wranglers are better for doing trails, Mercedes G-Wagons are considered cooler and the Jeep Grand Cherokee is faster. The Land Cruiser, however, is the best all-rounder. It is equally at home fetching and carrying kids and their things as it is climbing a rocky mountain pass. It is a great tow car and a comfortable cruiser for long journeys. It is a great over-lander, yet it doesn’t look out of place in an executive parking lot alongside German luxury sedans. It is also the most reliable car in its category. So whilst the Range Rover, the assorted Jeeps, the G-wagon, Q7s, X5s, etc, tick some boxes, the Land Cruiser ticks them all.

Talking about prado, its basically a Toyota Fortuner. ,so, why is it expensive? , I you were aware, Aston Martin DBS is a DB9. With little bit of everything. You cannot tell the difference unless you are a die hard fan. Just minor improvements in every aspects. Engine tuning,suspension setup, exhaust etc. But is twice as expensive. Similarly, Toyota Fortuner is a very reliable vehicle as it is. But it was made little bit better in every aspect in terms of safety and reliability. ,Its the vehicle thats built to last, that does not stop at nothing,. Everything in it is purpose built. The wiring in it, is extra fire proof, the suspension parts weights a ton, the position of the battery, etc are designed to work even if the car is subjected to a crash. Like i said, nothing can stop a Land Cruiser. Ofcourse, a ,Range Rover, is slightly better in offroading, but it brakes down on the second day. while the Land Cruiser can do it 24X7,365 days, through out its life., That’s why, if you observe, Range rovers are driven by movie stars and rich people, while most of the CM’s, ministers, UN officials and every high ranking officers prefers the Land Cruiser. ,Its a statement. This is the car you want to drive, if your life is on the line.

Which one is more reliable and durable: Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol?

Both are very well build SUV top of their lines in each brand .. which it’s more durable will depends on the maintenance and driving conditions for each one over the time. I put them both in the same category with no mistake selecting each one.
