Could somebody shed more light on modern computer systems used by ships for navigation and propulsion?

Someone with a flashlight could shed some light on those systems if they are fitted in a dark cupboard. The computerised navigation system ECDIS looks just like a desktop PC with an UPS attached. Some run on Linux, but most are Windows based. They all are coated black or dark grey, if that helps. Propulsion controls for large two stroke diesel engines with electronic fuel injection and valve control typically use tall grey Rittal cabinets for hardware and power supply. They usually are on the mid platform itself or inside the engine control room in well illuminated places. No need to bring a torch.

Hey, We will make a chemical storage cabinet for our microbiology laboratory. However, we could not decide on the cabinet material. We work in an area with high humidity. Whether galvanized steel or polypropylene would be more useful?

I agree with Sadie Giroux. No material is suitable for everything and you may need two or more cabinets depending on what is to be stored. Flammable materials are highly regulated and require specialized storage. They may be required to have outside storage. I would not use any uncoated metal, especially not galvanized steel, which is two dissimilar metals that are highly reactive with some other materials you might want to store. One material you might want to check out is fiberglass which is frequently used for storage cabinets and enclosures. Fiberglass is very strong, relatively inexpensive and inert to more things than a thermoplastic such as polypropylene. I recommend that you talk to a salesperson for an enclosure manufacturer such as Rittal. They could recommend the best solution for your project.

How should I choose a network rack? (for router, switches, tower server, and gadgets)

Since you need to put both network equipment and server(s) you do not strictly need a network only rack. You mention tower server, but you may want to use a rack mounted server, or more than one if needed, along with required accessories. Computer racks come in standard width sizes of 19 inches for side and front mounts. Actual cabinet width is normally more (up to 80cm) to accomodate cables. Depth can be 100 or 120 cm. Consider that rack servers are usually very long. Height is normally 42u (1u=1.75 inches) to accomodate as many standard height units. Rack can have wheels for easier movement, or a foot to prevent tilting when servers are extracted for maintenance (rack server can have side mounted rails to pull them out and perform maintenance). You can choose racks from many manufacturers. I have experience with emerson, rittal, apc, tecnosteel. Racks must allow custom configuration in terms of options, like shelves, cable organizers, doors, side panels, power units, fans, etc. Your choice will be determined by the environment in which you have to fit it, power type, cooling type, floor type, available space on front and back, ease of maintenance, cable distribution for power, network and monitoring, airflow, etc. A quite common choice these days is a 42u 80x120cm, with wheels, single front grate door, double back grate door, airflow from front to back, 2 independent power strips on the back, with at least 16Amps each. You may want to have locks on the doors. You may want to consider an ups to be put on the lower part of the rack, powering one of the two power strips. A 5kva ups should be fine to power what you described for 30–40 mins. Another thing you may want is a kvm console, which is a keyboard+video+mouse that can be connected to more than one server or device, and you can easily switch from one server to another with a simple key. You can use a network kvm to allow remote low-level access to your equipment via network. Do not forget to buy a thermometer to place on your back rack door, so to check temperature. As a rule of thumb, you should never exceed 35C on the back of the rack. Good luck! Feel free to ask any question detailing your setup.
