รีวิว Q&A hyundai rally car

Should I use an RWD car like an MX5 or an FWD, say Hyundai Excel, for local gravel/dirt rally rounds?

You can trash a bunch of Excels for the cost of a Miata. The Excel also has a proper tin roof and room in the interior to mount a spare wheel, tow rope, triangles, a few tools and so on. However, many have turned Miatas successfully into rally cars Dan Edmunds and his rally Miata As for FWD versus RWD, it probably depends on whether you are more comfortable with understeer or oversteer. I have rallied both. On really slippery surfaces such as ice, I find FWD to be easier to drive. FWD responds well to left foot braking…but then I would love to have my Pinto powered Cortina back ;-)

What are different car brands known for?

All brands will be listed A-Z. Lets get started, shall we? Acura, - The NSX (,not, the new one); more luxurious version of Honda. Alfa Romeo, - Quirky design and styling you won’t find on any other car; Very outdated infotainment. Aston Martin, - Resembles certain Fords; Very composed and comfortable yet fun cars; Crazy hypercars (Vulcan, Valkyrie, 003). Audi, - Good looking, comfortable, luxury cars; Inline-5 engine (TTRS); The Quattro - the original AWD rally car; and of course, the R8. Bentley, - Rolls Royce’s main competitor; Ultra-high-end luxury vehicles; Used to be owned by Rolls-Royce; Slightly behind Mercedes-Maybach technologically. BMW ,- Symbol of wealth for people that lack it; Often driven by wealthy Asian college kids that shouldn't have a license; Built the amazing M1 and E60 M5. Bugatti ,- Ancient luxury company resurrected by VW; The only brand that currently produces a W16 engine; Insane performance and an equally insane price tag to match. Buick ,- Had its heyday a while back; Cars are a bit dated; Makes generic Karen vehicles. Cadillac ,- Limousines. And the CTS-V. That’s about it. Chevrolet ,- Duramax engine; Corvette; Big Ford competitor; One of the American Big Three car manufacturers. Chrysler ,- Old american brand; Not known for much besides making up a component of FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) which owns a couple other brands; Made (Makes?) the Chrysler 300 which some people mistake for Rolls-Royces somehow. Dodge ,- Muscle cars; Challenger / Charger Hellcat; Ram pickup trucks. Ferrari ,- Supercars; Ultra-exclusive hypercars (LaFerrari, Enzo, F50); Distinctive engine sounds; Has been active and highly successful in racing since the company was founded; Fiat ,- Little cars and FCA. Ford ,- Reasonably priced, solid family cars; The infamous Crowd-Hitter (Mustang); The police cars you see in every 90’s film (Crown Vics); Famously defeated Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966–1969 with the GT40. Geely ,- Wealthy Chinese company; Very good at taking failing companies and turning them around (Volvo, Lotus); sells family cars for the Chinese domestic market. Hennessy, - Car tuners-turned-manufacturers; Briefly broke the production car record with the Venom GT; Not the most reliable cars. Honda ,- Makes some of the most popular cars on the planet (Civic, Accord, CRV); Very reliable, low maintenance cars; Fastest FWD production car (Civic Type R). Hyundai ,- Similar to Honda / Toyota, makes reliable, low maintenance cars; Infiniti ,- Nissan’s luxury brand; Makes good, comfortable cars; big BMW competitor. Jaguar ,- British engineering; Not the most reliable cars nor a really good value; Mostly old folks drive these; Built the C, D, and E Type which were great cars. Jeep ,- Offroad vehicles. Kia ,- Yet another Toyota / Honda competitor; Made a half-decent sports car in the form of the Kia Stinger. Koenigsegg ,- Hold the current production car speed record with the Agera RS; Cutting-edge technology; Many of the greatest hypercars. Lamborghini, - Biggest Ferrari competitor; Symbol of wealth; Aggressive design and styling; NA V10 and V12’s as opposed to forced induction. Lancia ,- Rally heritage; Now makes boring city commuters; Built the Stratos HF, which was a very successful rally car with a Ferrari engine. Land Rover, - Another British brand; Also not the most reliable or the best value; Asian people seem to like these. Lexus ,- Solid, practical, and comfortable luxury cars with good reliability thanks to their Toyota engineering; Decent value for the money; made the LFA, possibly the greatest sounding production car of all time. Maserati ,- Overpriced and not up to par with other brands in the same price range quite yet. Mazda, - Karen-mobiles and some light, low-powered fun sports cars (Mazdaspeed3 and the like); Used to make Rotor-engine powered cars in the form of the legendary RX-series; McLaren, - Racing; Excellent hypercars (Senna, Speedtail, F1); Exceptional engineering capabilities as shown in the 720S. Mercedes-Benz, - Largest BMW competitor; Maybach ultra-luxury vehicles; AMG Performance; Good quality luxury cars with fantastic infotainment systems. Mini, - Rally heritage; Small and fun cars. Mitsubishi, - Average cars, not too bad for the price; Drift cars; JDM; Nissan, - One of the better car lower priced car brands; The legendary GTR. Pagani, - Handcrafted, super-luxurious supercars and hypercars. Porsche, - Excellent sports cars with great handling; Very successful in racing; Built some truly incredible cars over the years. Ram, - See ,Dodge,. Rolls-Royce, - Famous ultra-luxury vehicles; Competes with Bentley and Mercedes-Maybach; Very distinctive design. Subaru, - Some of the greatest offroad rally cars, and for a very fair price as well. Tesla, - High quality luxury EVs. Toyota, - Honda but different; Also, the famous MK4 Supra. Volkswagen, - Owns many other car brands; Makes typical unassuming family cars. Volvo, - Makes decent cars, for acceptable prices; Also, holds the fastest truck record with the Iron Knight. Zenvo, - Tried and somewhat succeeded in making a hypercar, only to have it blow up on live TV (ST1 / TopGear). Please, feel free to suggest changes / additions to this list, and hope you enjoyed.

Is automobile racing a dying sport?

A part of it, perhaps. But racing is still a great promotion for all car brands with Le Mans for premium ones (Aston Martin, Porsche..) and WRC for more general like Ford, VW, Hyundai etc as they always tend to use the models to make a WRC rally car based on regular models that they want to promote, intended for general public (Fiesta, Polo, i20..)

What are some cars similar to Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi EVO?

It depends what you’re looking for. The EVO can be scratched off the list because it was discontinued in 2015. If rally cars are your thing, then the WRX is your only option. If you’re looking for compact sports cars, then take a look at VW Golf R, Hyundai Veloster, and Honda Civic Type R. They tend to be the trending variants. If your pockets are deep enough, a BMW M2 would be a serious contender for 2x as much.

What are the few competent cars that failed in India due to marketing?

Over the years, there have been many different types of cars that have been introduced in the Indian market. ,While most of them were launched to go with the flow by a particular automaker, some deserve a mention for being competitive and more ahead of the time., Unfortunately, the bold attempts carried out by various automakers have been inconsistent in the market. Due to the inefficiency in marketing them well by the automakers, many outstanding products were ignored over the years. This later on proved to be influential in the massive failure of the products. ,Here are five such products which despite being great, had to be discontinued due to some poor handling of sales by their respective automakers. Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet introduced the Cruze to the Indian market in the 2009 model year. Unlike most of the models launched by the automaker during the time, the Cruze was a sure shot winner on their hands. It had a potent 2.0 litre diesel motor, which produced a massive 197 BHP of power back then. The Cruze also had a pretty decent petrol engine in its stable compared to its German counterparts. Above that, the design of the Cruze resembled that of the Camaro, which had attained good fame here coming from the Transformers series. Despite all that, the Cruze was marketed as a premium by Chevrolet despite being well priced compared to the Skoda Laura and Volkswagen Jetta. In fact, you had to pay a premium as a booking amount while purchasing the car, Which kind of frustrated its potential owners. All that was backed by the mediocre service by the dealership, which never inspired confidence. Hence, the car which was touted to revive the premium sedan segment back then turned to be a massive failure. It kind of gave us a lesson that in the business front, marketing surely matters. Thus, the Cruze despite being an enthusiast favourite went off air in 2016, just a year before Chevrolet left India for good. 2. Ford Fusion. This is my personal favourite amongst the list and its failure in India really bothers me. The Fusion was among the first attempts by the automaker to introduce a whole new segment, called the premium hatchback one. Looking at the Fusion, it was not amongst the best looking cars around. But it more than made up for it due to its practicality and large dimensions, which resulted in more space inside. Handling and driving feel were a massive plus on it, with the Fusion having a great engine to support it. Ford marketed it as a no-nonsense car, but the automaker also kept a budget cap in order to advertise it back then. This proved to be a massive dent in the India journey of the Fusion, which was a tad bit expensive at the time. But, Ford had developed a habit of making a deal of slightly expensive cars with the Endeavour, so the Fusion was also expected to fall on the same bracket. But what happened was the Fusion, despite its incredible versatility hardly managed to sell in decent numbers. In fact, even before its discontinuation in 2010, the Fusion became a rare sight in Indian roads. This was a sad end to a car that could have been the face of the premium hatchback segment back then, one which forms the highest chunk of sales amongst all segments in the Indian market today. 3. Mitsubishi Cedia. The Mitsubishi Cedia can easily go down as one of the most underrated cars ever to be sold here. Launched in 2005, the premium sedan had huge potential, after all it came from the stables of the company which made the legendary Evolution road going rally cars. The Cedia had various styling bits from the Lancer Evo 8 and later on the Evo 9. The highlight of the Cedia was that it had a very performance-oriented 2.0 litre diesel motor which was loved by journalists and enthusiasts alike. But, Hindustan Motors who partnered Mitsubishi here were really short of cash in order to market the car. Mitsubishi on the other hand had problems of their own globally, which eventually led to the company being bankrupt a few years later. This never quite helped the sales of the Cedia and despite the car being a very reliable product, never took off. Thus, the inability of resources within both automakers resulted in the Cedia massively losing out. But over the years, it has garnered a bit of a reputation as a performance sedan and also as a collectors edition car here. All of that came late as by then, the Cedia was already phased out from the market. I can mention almost every model that Mitsubishi has launched after the Lancer in this list, but out of all of them the Cedia was the most promising product. 4. Tata Aria. The Aria was launched in the 2011 model year and was a landmark car for Tata Motors in many ways. Firstly, it marked a new beginning for the homegrown automaker by being a product far different from any other Tata car ever sold. It was feature loaded and also spacious, which seemed the ideal code to crack the market. But the then flagship model of Tata Motors never found favour with the public as it was marketed as a premium. This meant that customers were not sure of paying a lot of money for a Tata car. This was itself a roadblock for a company known for making affordable and fuel efficient vehicles. Product wise, the Aria had many flaws like its bland looks, inconsistent engine and bad riding feel. But all that could have been forgotten by the automaker if the MPV was marketed to a large extent. Back then, the Aria was a massive threat to the Toyota Innova which was without doubt an established brand here. But, the Aria found a very few takers, with most of them being in the fleet and taxi segment. In the end, Tata Motors had to discontinue the car in favour of the Hexa in 2016. Thus, this was a sad end to a car which had a lot of promise during its day and should have sold more than it did. 5. Skoda Fabia. The Fabia was without doubt the most influential Skoda launch during its time. Skoda were then specialised as a premium brand here, with no experience in the mass market segment. But in 2008, the automaker took a risk in entering it, particularly the premium hatchback segment. Skoda spent a lot of money to develop the Fabia for India and the automaker had also said that it will thoroughly focus on this segment for the coming years. The Fabia was a typical Skoda, having a decent equipment list and exciting engines, but what made it different was that it was not priced high. But one thing that we associate with Skoda is that they never market their products extensively here. That was the case with the Fabia, with Skoda banking on its premium image to lure customers into buying the car. But that did not click as the Fabia, despite getting great reviews from automotive journalists never quite clicked. What made it difficult was that it was competing with the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which was at its peak back then. The further arrival of the Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto and Honda Jazz sidelined the Fabia, which turned out to be a massive downgrade. Skoda quietly phased out the Fabia in 2012, with the car never being able to fulfill its potential in the Indian market. Thus, these were the cars that I feel deserved to have some success in the market, if not for the marketing blunder that their respective automakers made. ,There are many such cars that fall in this category and it would take a long mention to write about them., ,Nevertheless, most of the automakers that I mentioned above moved on from their failures by concentrating on other ends of the market. But the failures mentioned above may likely have haunted them during that time. ,This teaches us a very significant lesson about the Indian market, that is, even the most technologically advanced car launched will not guarantee you success in sales numbers. ,For that, the automaker must realize it is a success and should widely market it as a success. Thank you.

Is it a smart business idea for Hyundai to launch their N division?

Hyundai is following in the footsteps on their Japanese competitors, both with their N performance division and with their upscale Genesis division. The N division should improve the brand image among younger customers. Rally cars have to be fast and durable; creating that image won't hurt at all. Genesis is also a smart idea. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and even Cadillac have discovered that people who buy up-market (and highly profitable) cars don't want to mingle in the showroom with the hoi polloi buying their econoboxes, hence Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti. Hyundai's Genesis and upcoming Equus replacement move them squarely into the same upscale market. Like Lexus, they will start by significantly undercutting their competitors' prices and then, over time, they will raise prices to directly competitive levels. Smart thinking either way. Bottom line? Hyundai wants to move from "cheap Korean stuff with lousy depreciation" to "quality engineered vehicles that can hold their own against anybody". As long as they back that up with product -- current signs are that they are serious about doing so -- it's hard to argue with the strategy.

If car brands had honest slogans, what are some examples of what they would be?

Chevrolet:, “Mediocre cars you’ll want to buy because our actors confuse them for Audis!” Jeep:, “One. Tough. Wrangler. (and a bunch of other total crap made by Fiat).” Dodge: ,“LOOK!!! 707 HP!! ,(please buy all our other mediocre crap because of how much you love our ,707 HP!!!!!!!!!!,).” Ram: ,“We build the toughest pickup-truck drivetrains built by other people that money can buy.” Ford:, “Why use new designs when you can tweak the existing good ones into something only a mother could love?” or… Ford,: “Beating Europeans at the low-income, budget car game since 1998.” Nissan:, “At Nissan, we feel no design is too ugly.” Honda: ,“Cars so reliable you’ll forget how boring they are.” Toyota:, “Slowly eroding our reputation for quality in order to be #1 in sales!” Lexus:, “15 years later it will be as cool as your mom’s Camry… because it is.” Mazda: ,“Slogans so dumb we guarantee our spot at #12.” Kia:, “Quality of Toyota. Design of BMW. Reputation of Daewoo.” Hyundai: “,Striving to be the other Honda since 1967.” Suzuki: “,We build cars, we swear!” Mitsubishi: “,Bottoming out Consumer Reports - 20 year running.” Subaru:, “Building for rally… Selling to vegans.” Volvo: ,“Sounds like female anatomy… but a heck of a lot safer!” Mercedes: ,“Better than BMW. Uglier than BMW. Proud of it. No laughing.” BMW:, “With our 0% down lease options, your neighbors will never guess you are barely lower middle class.” Audi: ,“Striving to be what BMW used to be!” Saab:, “9 out of 10 dentists drive one.” Tesla: “,The ultimate fairly short road trip machine.” Volkswagen: ,“Our cars tell your emissions laws to “schieb sie in dein Arschloch.”” Porche: “,We make our cars stupid fast to make up for our Volkswagen Beetle inspired designs.” Jaguar:, “The H.M.S. Hood of automobiles.”
