Today as I do each year, I take my mint 8,000 mile 21yr old Honda VTR 1000 for MOT. It passes , I return to my garage and pay the VED, parking it up until the next MOT. Annual mileage = 14. I then ride my BMW GSA and the VTR remains a workshop ornament - am I alone? https://t.co/EYzUs7OoNQ
So far: Couple of: Honda Yamaha 90–125cc Yamaha 600: Exchanged for VTR-1000 after 4 weeks, feeling sketchy passing big rigs and others on highway in the rain in Pacific Northwest Honda VTR-1000: No problem passing anything on the road. Very comfortable and reliable sport cruiser Ducati 1100 EVO: Sportier. Lot shorter and more compact than the Honda. Got totaled from behind at stop light after only couple thousand miles Ducati 1200 25th anniversary: Much much better bike than the 1100evo. Like it a lot so far! Future: looking at bmw r9t or 1250rt for cruising Happy Riding!
I’ve just gotten my first V-Twin, a Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm, after owning 5 other bikes ranging from a dirt bike, a big thumper and an inline 4. The V-Twin is so awesome that I can’t even tell you how awesome it is but then, you know that already because you own a Duc. Thumpers are a lot of fun but they are lousy at speed. My KTM 625 is very reluctant to go over 100mph, it’s a wheelie/hooligan machine but it’s no good for long trips. A bit slow and very uncomfortable because of the vibrations. It could shake your fillings loose. My inline four is quick but it’s like riding something powered by an elastic band. The power has to build and is only really useful at high revs and by the time the revs are up there you’re really moving and you need to back off or risk losing your license. The twin is like the best of both so my advise is go for a big V-twin. The Panigale would work but it’s not too comfy. Your wrists will take a beating and your ass will get numb and your knees may get stiff from the crouched riding position. Something like a KTM 990 Supermoto, they do a touring version that you can fit panniers to might be pretty good. They also do the 990 Super Duke and the absolutely insane 1290 Super Duke. Ducati Multistrada as well. I’ve wanted one of those for a while. Nice looks, plenty of grunt and good for long trips. I’d like the 1200. The s1000rr is an awesome bike, one of my friends has one. It’s good, it’s seriously fast but it might be a tad focused for all day riding. Same as the Panigale really. Like I suggest. I’d look around at some big V-twins.
It can vary, depending on engine layout and fuel system parameters, for example,The Honda VTR 1000F Firestorm produces 110 HP from it's V-Twin 1000 cc carburreted engine, whereas, the Honda CBR 1000 RR - R produces 215 HP from it's straight 4 cylinder, multi point fuel injected 1000 cc engine.
Everyone’s idea of fun (on a motorcycle or what a ‘fun’ motorcycle is) isn’t the same, so it’s really a matter of taste/preference. Some people prefer the slow thumping ancient single cylinders like Royal Enfields, some like modern edgy singles like the KTM Duke 390, some like V twins and some like parallel twins. Overall, twins are much more likely to be fun than singles, because they’re likely to have higher displacement engines , higher RPM limit and more power/torque with lesser vibration and broader powerband than a single. Even within the same type of architecture from the same company/brand , there can be huge differences. A Panigale 1299 is a very different animal from a Supersport, let aside a Vtwin Harley Davidson which again is very different from a V twin Moto Guzzi. Arguably, the best V twins aren’t even in production anymore (the Honda VTR-1000F and VTR-1000SP/RC-51 and Suzuki TL-1000 R/S). I suggest you test-ride the following bikes in the same order: 1) KTM Duke 690 2) Harley Davidson Fat Bob/Fat Boy 3) Kawasaki Ninja 650 4) Triumph Bonneville 1200 5) BMW R1200 (R or RS) 6) KTM Duke 790 7) Ducati Monster 1200/Panigale 959
