Is the Jeep Wrangler the best vehicle for off-road driving?
This is the perfect question to answer if you want to get bullied online. The Jeep Wrangler fanboys will burn me and drag my body behind their cars before abandoning my body in the desert. I hope I will be saved by the Toyota Fanboys. Well, the Jeep Wrangler is the ultimate fun car. It reminds me of the old Toyota FJ40 or BJ40. You can remove the doors, the roof, fit supervised tyres and have the best time of your life. Now, if you are overlanding through Africa for weeks or months, I have never seen anyone using a Jeep Wrangler… and never met someone that wanted to. I see three main reasons to that: It is fairly small as an overland vehicle. Jeep's reputation for reliability is some what… uhmmm not the best. As overlanders, we don't want to have problems 5-day drive from “civilization”. It might be extremely difficult to find spare parts in many countries. So you should just ask yourself if it is a good off-road car for you. If you live in the US, do not intend to go abroad, travel for long period of time, yes, it's the perfect car. If you want to go around the world, cross Africa, then get a Toyota Hilux or LC79.
What are some recommendations for a proper off-road 4x4 vehicle available in Europe?
A proper 4x4? A vehicle that have a large third-party equipment catalogue. You will need to equip your vehicle if you are serious about off-roading. A good starting point is to go to ARB's website, download the catalogue. ARB is THE third-party equipment specialist for real off-roaders and overlanders. If your vehicle is not listed or has only a limited list of accessories, then it is NOT a recommended 4x4 vehicle. Choose a vehicle for its off-road capability. It should have 4wd long and 4wd short, a rear diff locker. I personally don't like automatic gearbox and traction control. A good approach angle, climbing angle and departure angle. This is the clearance, the ability to approach an obstacle, go over it and drive away from it. Prefer diesel over petrol. Yes, I know, big cities are slowly banning diesel but when you cross a river, diesel is less prone to electrical short-circuit. Don't take a car that is too precious like a Range Rover. Choose a car with a good reliability reputation. In conclusion, I would buy a Toyota Hilux or any other double-cab pickup listed on ARB's catalogue. Or a Toyota Landcruiser or any non-public 4x4 listed on ARB's catalogue. But Toyota Hilux is my first choice as it fills all the above criteria. Unfortunately the Toyota Landcruiser 79 series is NOT available in Europe.

Reliability Off-road capability Ease of repair Ease of finding spare parts worldwide Simple vehicle that are using proven solutions Rugged, rugged, rugged Size suitable for overlanding I know I sound like a Toyota fanboy and I don't think I am but I would trust only one of those three vehicles and I own two of them. P.S.: Please don't scream. I have been driving during extensive test drives Grand Cherokee, Range Rovers. I have been towing Nissan and Mitsubishi in the middle of the jungle. And had bad experiences with Landrovers (which are the best to drive but too often at the garage). And try to fix a Jeep Wrangler in Nepal or Tanzania.
What are the best makes of vehicles to drive Central and South America?
No perfect vehicle. Period. Every truck has it upsides and downsides all truck are a compromise on some level. You trade the complexity and size of a 200 series Land Cruiser for its ride and comfort. You trade the off road capability for ride comfort in a 1st Gen 4runner. I would generally look at trucks with these criteria to guide you. Serviceability a simpler truck like a 70 series land cruiser or a land rover defender will be much easier to work on in the field then newer more plastic and computer trucks. Off road capacity a jeep rubicon will go farther then just about any thing. The other side of the coin is on road ride. The Rubicon will never ride as nice a 200 land cruiser. But a 200 land cruiser wont go half as far off road compared to the Rubicon. Payload is another thing to look at a jeep cant hold half the weight that a 200 series land cruiser. Its important to answer the question how much stuff do I wanna bring. The final criteria is durability and reliability. How often dose a truck break down and how much hard use can the truck stand up to. With these criteria said stick to international brands like ,toyota and mercedes benz. That way you know that there is at least some dealer down there. Nissan wont be in every country like toyota or benz will be. With that said just because a toyota is sold the USA doesn't mean it will be sold in south/central america. A classic example is the the 4runner was never sold in south and central america. So stick to "global platforms". truck that are sold in every market basically the same. Think the 100 series land cruiser and 105 land cruiser. Same basic truck with some parts commonality. I would say any land crusiers are a good place to ,start . Any of them really from the 40 to the 200 series. The 70 was never orginally sold in the USA but you can find them imported. These are the modern day work horse land cruiser sold to places of the world that need the toughest SUV. There will be parts or the ability to get parts for any land cruiser ever made in every country. Other trucks are the ,Mercedes Benz G wagon, land rover defender, toyota hilux not sold in the USA. These all fit the global platform criteria. Others to consider are the Land Rover Discovery Jeep JK. What most important is to do the pan am. My personal overland truck that I plan on taking on the pan am is a 1998 100 series land cruiser. Perfect balance for an overland truck. Being one who'd also like to make an overland expedition around the world one day too, after researching this, most who have do so mainly in Toyota LandCruisers or Tacomas(Hilux)- as Jim Murphy pointed out already, or Landrover Deffenders or Discoveries.

Any 4wd Hilux. Avoid 2wd Hilux. Personally I prefer a double cab. The G series because I like manual over automatic gearbox and because, as an overlander, I do modify my car a lot. So why paying for equipment that you will not keep?
