No, they are big, noisy to be in, ride terribly and eat brakes. They have a myriad of less than reliable sensors so they kick up engine management faults for a past time i wouldn’t have one as a gift, even a diesel (which trash injectors, boost pipes and other turbo-related stuff). The only thing worse is a similar age BMW X5 which is assembled somewhere where vast sheets of hard plastic with a leatherlike pattern moulded into it is considered adequate, has an EGR thermostat cooling pipe made from tupperware which explodes at the slightest provocation, simultaneously dumping all the coolant drowning the electrics and cooking the engine, handles like a Morris Traveller with a sofa on the roof and manages to bestow the driver with the elements of bad judgement, poor taste, ignorance and inadequate sexual performance all at the same time.
Yes. Oil leaked and water pump leaking coolant into the timing belt cavities are the major breakdown of timing belt materials. That is why when we change timing belts we also change the camshaft seals, crankshaft seal, water pump and tensioner pulley to make sure the specified belt that we put on will last as long as it supposed to be by the manufacturers.
You can buy the coolant from the parts section at the dealership, but that will be very expensive. I own a Volvo XC90 and I go to an commercial parts place and buy my oil, coolant/antifreeze, brake fluid, all have on the label “made for” and a list of car makers that it’s approved for. My owners manual has in it but Castrol 0–40 motor oil. Which is what’s called an aftermarket motor oil and it specify’s which filter that’s approved. The people at the parts place like AutoZone has up to date info on cars and trucks ( it’s their business ) I wouldn’t trust WalMart or Kmart. Once you know what’s an approved aftermarket item then you can visit a parts house and tell them the maker of the car engine specs and pretty much get everything unless it’s a dealer only item like the mounting bracket for an external mirror or a door handle.
Because of the tree huggers, trying to do better for the environment. Better use synthetic, and do all the maintenance. They use a lifetime coolant, so that's good. It they can keep it running in spec, then it should be ok. But if the motor is beat on, then it won't be long before it won't move on its own!!!!
I own a 2012 Volvo XC60 with a whopping 220,000 miles. I bought it with 100,000 miles in January of 2017. Here is a list of the repairs I’ve had to do, in order if I can remember: Vacuum pump reseal. It was leaking when I bought the vehicle. CV Axles started making noise at 120,000 miles or so. It got worse and worse until I finally replaced both at 155,000 miles. I used aftermarket units - Trackmotive surtracks. Many shops recommend only the Volvo axles at exorbitant cost but I haven’t had any issues. $240 parts, $500 labor to a friend of mine because no shop would let me supply my own parts. also around 150,000, I had the upper and lower engine mounts replaced, which included a torque rod. Unfortunately, this did not fix the droning roar coming from the front end, so I was taken for unnecessary repairs here. $450. At the same time, the same shop traced my check engine light to a PCV oil trap vent box. A very common issue on Volvos. $330. Immediately afterwards, my car began burning oil. More on that later. 177,500 miles, both original headlight bulbs went out at the same time and were replaced. They are HIDs that swivel with the steering wheel. The bulbs are $135 each, BUT the labor is only 15 minutes per side. No crazy removal of the bumper or other surgery is required for access. The owner’s manual states that conventional bulbs can be changed yourself, but HIDs require servicing “by a trained Volvo technician”. They mean it. When I got the car back, one was pointed almost straight up, and the other was aimed 30 degrees to the right. Neither faced the road. It was hilarious! A quick return to she shop for an alignment procedure cured this at no extra charge. Even Volvo techs make mistakes! During that dealership visit, I inquired about why my vehicle was burning through rear brake light bulbs at a rate of a set every couple months. The service advisor climbed into my truck and spent far more time than he probably should have trying to fix my wiring harness, he cut a couple wires and spliced in new ones with butt connectors. No problems since and the fix was free! 185,000 or so, I finally found out the cause of the droning roar coming from the front left: A wheel bearing. It’s sold as the complete hub assembly. $108 from FCP Euro for the original equipment part. My local NTB installed it for $288. This saved me $150 over having a shop install an aftermarket part. Buy your own parts and find an honest shop that will install them for you. You will save money, but it’s more of a hassle. During this same visit to NTB, they installed a fuel rail pressure sensor that was causing a check engine light. It cost me $35 for the part, also from FCP Euro. The mechanic told the advisor to not charge me for it, because in his words “It was so easy that I don’t feel comfortable charging for that.” That was all for repairs. Now, on to general maintenance: Volvo recommends castrol conventional oil on the 2012 XC60, and to change it every 7,500 miles. I use synthetic oil to provide better lubrication for the turbocharger, and I change it every 5,000 miles. The capacity is 7.8 quarts. Which is a lot. Oil change places charge you usually $10 per quart over 5 quarts, so an oil change will usually run you about $90–$120 depending on where you go. I’m cheap, so I change it myself. It’s not hard to do, and I use the oil I want. That said, oil changes truly are optional on Volvos. I had a coworker with a 2006 XC90 with over 200,000 miles and she’d had the car for 3 years and never changed the oil. Ever. The car ran just fine. I don’t recommend it, but in a Volvo, you might just get away with it. Transmission fluid “does not need to be serviced under normal driving conditions”. Yeah. Sure. I change it every 50,000 miles, and it usually costs around $400. More than it would cost in a Kia, but a lot cheaper than a transmission rebuild! Coolant is “lifetime and should only be replaced when the cooling system is serviced” blah blah blah. The cooling system needs service when the chemicals in the coolant break down and clog up components. By changing the coolant, you can extend the life of your cooling system components. When I bought the car, it had fresh coolant. I did it myself again at 200,000 miles, and I used the Volvo genuine concentrated coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. $28 per gallon of concentrate. Cheap insurance and it really doesn’t need to be done ,that, often, but definitely should be done every few years. All my components are original. Brakes seem to last virtually forever. My front brakes were installed at 117,000 miles and haven’t been touched since and the pads still have tons of life left. Rear brakes made it 90,000. Battery is easy enough to get to. All the lights (with the exception of the HID headlights) are easy to get to and change yourself. Inline 6 design makes spark plugs a breeze. 20 minutes with hand tools and you’re off to the races. I’ve done plugs twice and coils once. Starter is super easy. Mine’s never gone out, but if it did it’s right behind the oil pan and nothing’s blocking access. AC compressor is right on top of the engine. Mine’s original, but it can’t have much longer. Also a super easy job. I think book time is 45 minutes. Serpentine belt is a bit trickier, but it’s not something you’re changing super frequently. Water pump isn’t some wild design that’s driven by the timing chain and is an engine out job. I asked the Volvo specialist I go to now after the oil burning fiasco with the first shop and he can’t remember ever doing one, but said it wouldn’t be too much of a problem. He also said the alternator on this car is involved. They aren’t as bad as some, but although he’s seen a couple, it’s not a common failure. Turbochargers almost never fail and if they do, it’s always because of poor maintenance. What does it need now? Exhaust manifold gaskets. The turbo must be removed for this very labor intensive task. It’s a fluke and not a guaranteed to fail item. I can’t bash Volvo for putting them in an inaccessible position. The cost will be $1100, but my specialist says I can wait “Until it becomes embarrassing to drive”. It burns oil. About a quart every thousand miles. I plan to run an oil flush, followed by an oil change with 20% Lucas stabilizer. My specialist says it will help a lot, but it’s a high mileage turbo car so it’s something that one should just live with and continue adding oil. Replacing the oil control rings would cost thousands. Struts kind of creak over bumps on a cold morning. Shuts up after the first couple bumps but 4C suspension will need doing at some point. No idea of cost. Is a Volvo worth owning? A.B.S.O.L.U.T.E.L.Y. My car is supremely comfortable and quiet, has a ton of great modern convenience features despite being 10 years old, it’s fast as hell, handles great for an SUV it’s size, the AWD is great in the snow and I’ve even taken it off road. All wrapped up in a stylish, practical, and reliable package that doubles as the safest car on Earth. More people should own and drive Volvos!
