What is the most useless thing you ever bought?
A GREEN CARD - I'M a GWM from Cologne, Germany, and last century had fallen in love with a GBM from the Promise(d) Land, and decided to follow my dreams. Make a long story short: He died of AIDS within 6 months of my arrival to the Promise(d) Land, I had tested HIV+, and had burned through my savings (its hard when HE can't work due to a health condition, and you are not allowed to). By the time my partner's family barred me from his funeral ("We don't need no White Guy tipping off the congregation - Southern Baptist Hardliners - that our son was a gay and died of AIDS") I had run out of money myself, and had to become creative. Since my folks at home also had been Fundamentalist Christians and therefore rejected my lifestyle, the only option available to me was to purchase the right to work in the Promise(d) Land if I wanted to survive. With Reagan being President trickling it down to the poor, one trickle a week, that purchase cost me [literally] an arm and a leg and an ear - but that was still better than to starve to death, and die. Then I became a member of the club, still hoping that one day __________ (do fill in the blank, and you are allowed to be creative - I was back then). And look, its 2014, I live in Gay San Francisco, AND I'M STILL HERE. Now, the fact that EsssssEfff is sold out to the Trust Fund Children (or daddy's boy and moma's gurl) that's a new threat to my survival - may be next time I'll tell you all about it.
What is your unpopular opinion about K-pop?
A few opinions that are related: The heteronormative assumption that most of the major Kpop bands have all heterosexual members is damaging to society. It is a reflection of SK Culture. If you read through my responses over the past year you will see that I am not some culturally ignorant GWM I'm losing my own biases on a different culture. East Asian culture actually has its own spin on same sex attraction and gender expression that is far more ancient and rich than modern Western queer culture - though East Asia has been thrown into the modern Western LGBt+ movement much more rapidly than the 50 or so years since Stonewall. East Asia is coming out much more quicky. Anyway my criteria for seeing through some of the hints are based on the same sex Eastern culture I discovered while living in Japan and travelling in the East. 2. Kpop bromance, make up, high fashion skinship are NOT representative of most Korean or East Asian adult men. These are subculture metrosexual trends in a few high class expensive urban neighborhoods in one or two cities The vast majority of East Asian men, sadly, lose the affection and kinship, sometimes even camaraderie by the time they graduate and enter the corporate army or military army. By middle age, the most bromance mainstream East Asian men are allowed is when they are extremely intoxicated. Middle age Eastern men don't walk down the streets holding hands when sober: they bow to each other instead of hug. Kpop and gay male urban culture is kind of an oasis for continued male affection into adulthood in these very otherwise macho and reserved male cultures. You’d have to go to SouthEast Asia; Thailand to see the bromance across all ages. And even then, sadly, the tradition of male bonding is on the wane via Western influences. 3. The West doesn't need another closet case musician - we went through all that drama in the 70s and 80s. Harry Styles ambiguity or refusal to define is fine, it still makes him a proud queer. But young Asian men killing themselves with overwork or depression because they are spiritually and sendually repressed is something we Western fans have moved past. It's too needlessly tragic to go through again. Western fans also like their celebs to be completely open about their romantic lives. This idea of virginal, adolescent enforced asexuality in Kpop comes across in the West as pederastic manipulative fetishistic fantasy that is severely repressive. Keep the yaoi in the fantasy world of manga thanks. 4. Same sex fanservice is homophobic. The fakeness of it belittles genuine queer expressions of same sex love. The kicks people get out of ”gay panic” make it seem that a male on male kiss is weird and repulsive. ”gay confidence” portrays an unwanted sexual advance that our community has had enough problems dealing with in our clubs and online stranger danger. We would cringe if men played this game on resisting women. I fail to see the humour of a dom man assaulting an unwilling cringing man. At the very least it reminds most of us of cringey homophobic adolescent taunting and ”fag bsiting”. Grow the hell up! 5. Same sex Shipping is a useful, subversive outlet to combat the pervasive hetero norms in Kpop. They are complilations that poke fun at heternormativity and same sex fanservice as an ironic acknowledgement of the massive repressed closet that these artists are forced to live in. Showing gay panic as a ”valid” ship turns the college boy taunts and queer baiting on its ass. The Subversiveness of same sex shipping is a necessary statement and release to the oppressive tension that is the reality. 6. An artists sexuality, or asexuality, or gender expression or identification is important. These creators are expressing a deeply sensual part of themselves when they perform. If they block off their sexuality or sensuality or gender(s) perspective (s) from their art then the art loses its cultural meaning, depth, authenticity, and ability to deeply connect. 7. Queer Role models matter to young fans. With the Queer suicide rate remaining consistently ten times greater than heyerosexual youth for decades now; it is still important for fans to have queer/out role models. Celebrities have a unique cultural power to be that example for fans by being true to themselves and the world that sustains their art and fame. Be they bisexual, transgender, asexual, black and gay, Arab and lesbian - these out famous people are important for true societal growth. Closeted, repressed celebs who don't have the courage to come out are shirking a huge responsibility that ultimately comes with power and privilege. But coming out is a process that takes time and risks sponsors and agency osttravization. So the way to go for a while is to become an outspoken LGBT+ ally; heterosexual cisgender allies are most welcome in Kpop too if they stay on positive, inclusive message. Nonetheless, there often comes a time when the artist has the power and privilege to be pretty much untouchable even from cancel culture. That is the time, as a public figure, to come out. Sexuality is NOT a private matter: if that were true then society would not have engagements, weddings, baby showers legal rights and family tax breaks. Public Sexuality is not about what people do in bed. Cultural Sexuality is a centrepiece of most human cultures. It needent be some purely physical thing at all. Queer sexuality is not different in that respect; it is NOT some shameful only physical act that is an abomination to be hidden away. Queer sexuality is about the love and commitment of two people meant to be shared with the community, the world, and as another viable and healthy setting to raise children. So queer celebrities have every right to publically share in our culture fully and as a healthy cultural example. So stop hiding away in fear and shame Kpop celebs. If you want to conquer the West, you need to be real: and out. [Of course a celebrity or politician who is queer but uses their power and influence should be outed and humiliated not for their innate sexuality but their harmful hypocrisy - this may not apply to kpop] No vids and photos on this post.
Whether you're a self identifying member of the community or have knowledge about LGBTQIA+ issues, do you find there are internal problems of discrimination or harassment regarding how others are treated either based on race or sexual identity etc?
Reading these other answers makes my little complaints about gatekeeping and body Nazism seem rather trivial. But I'll say them anyway, to be on record. GWM here. Open and proudly gay since junior high, now fifty three. Tragically born unfabulous and unpretty. Which means that other gay men think it's ok to tell me I'm worthless. And should probably just kill myself. That I'm not “gay enough” because I would rather play hockey than go to brunch. Barred from entering bars or clubs. Refused service in Provincetown. Told to just go home at Pride. My husband and I have largely made peace with our status as Outsiders, no sense of community or inclusion.
