Having been a consultant for 10 years, I'll take a stab. Background: I've worked for 4 firms, two of which are the largest left after the AECOM/URS merger. I have a degree in Archaeology and a minor in Geology and I have worked mostly as a geologist. Consulting can be a hard life. Your work product is essentially billing hours to client project numbers. That's how the company makes money. If you want to get a head, you have to be either extremely smart or willing to sacrifice having a life outside of work. Sometimes both. The type of work you will do will vary upon the office you work out of and the projects your manager has at his or her disposal. Breaking out from your managers projects will be the best way to get ahead and distinguish yourself, but also do more rewarding work. I have worked 80 hours in two weeks and I have gone months with little to no work only hitting 40 hours by charging 10 hours of administration time. Its peaks and valleys unless you're perceived to be a "top performer". Then again it all depends on your location as well. Some regions are booming and others are experiencing massive layoffs. Some companies run individual offices as profit centers so you may miss out on travelling for work if the office has a lot of local projects. But if those go away, people will start leaving and getting laid off. In 4 years I spent a year of my life travelling to and working in Alaska. It was great, but hard at home. The project was the most intense and best learning experience I've had, but it died down and I had to find new projects. Writing is paramount. You will write a lot of reports. If you can learn to write like a consultant, active voice with little or no emphasis of your opinion, you'll get less red ink coming back. You don't say "contamination" you say "impacted material". If you want to work outside, starting off you will sample a lot, and I mean A LOT, of Groundwater Monitoring Wells. GWM is the backbone of consulting. It's boring, it's tedious, but sometimes after months in the office its kind of nice. But you will quickly price yourself out of that work if you move up the ladder. Geologists and environmental scientist will always do a lot more field work than engineers, unless the engineer pushes to do field work. You will install a lot of wells, collect soil boring cores, and become best friends and enemies with a hand auger. Make friends with your subcontractors, but make sure they know you're in charge. Example project sites: Current and former gas stations (leaking underground storage tanks) constitute a lot of work, Refineries, bulk fuel terminals, an abandoned newspaper facility (soil vapor issues), mining smelter along the columbia, current and former dry cleaners, railroad sites, pipeline spills, military bases (army and air force), commercial real estate developments, and oil field sumps.
I have that same problem. Have you ever thought about how well you can “relate” to other people? The people you see and talk to, do they sometimes seem difficult to understand because you cannot “read between the lines”? Do parental units ever get on your case about your “lack of engagement” with life stuff, you know, pursuing some sort of emotional/physical relationship with a human and to “get with the program”? A lack of engagement with life activities others pursue with seemingly reckless abandon can be difficult for me because I have Asperger’s syndrome and I tend to see others as I want to see them, rather than how they wish to project themselves into the world of the living. I am far better with my dealings with inanimate objects because most often what I see is what I can get out of them, or how I perceive they will be useful to me. I know this sounds a little narcissistic to others, but after a lifetime of social awkwardness and indecisions about what others expect from me based on how they are “feeling” at any given moment, I have adopted a self- centered approach towards all my sentient relationships. Why do I do this? Because I am not very good at reading others faces and seeing all their non-verbal cues as tell-tale markers for whatever mood they are currently in. When people like me are thrown into situations involving a lot of decisions concerning how I should respond based on my own first inclinations to a rapidly changing series of manipulations made by others towards a group as a whole or to a subset within that group as a whole, I tend to think they are always speaking to me individually, rather than just to the group they likely intended. Why do I do this? Quite often it is because I am very easily manipulated by others opinions. I take things literally quite often when figuratively is how others would receive the same information. Why do I do this? Most often it is because I tend to want to be a “people-pleaser”. Why is this? Because I operate from a “guilt-based” self concept, or my “theory of mind” is based on “The Tyranny Of Shoulds” and self hate. See: Where does self-hate come from, what are the progenitors? Karen Horney's (1885-1952) masterpiece, “Neurosis and Human Growth, The Struggle Toward Self-Realization” (1950). “IF (I) YOU MUST BE SOMEONE THAT (I) YOU ARE NOT, (I) YOU WILL HATE WHO (I) YOU ARE, I.E., (I) YOU WILL HATE (MYSELF) YOURSELF. “Echoes of this theme are evident in Brandchaft's ideas of "pathological accomodation" (2010), and Masterson's "false self" (1988), among others.” Growing up with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and not being diagnosed until the age of 40 meant that I never really “fit in” with any peer group particularly the ones I fell into once I became school age. I never could understand what separated me from others, they all seemed to adjust to their lives rather “naturally” and not “unnaturally” as I did and I was let known constantly by others that I was always “rather strange”. People with undiagnosed ASD’s bounce back and forth in a “hit-and miss-out” cycle of acceptance and rejection by our peers. I quite often do not know why I do the things I do, and when I do, I question the authorships legitimacy to claims of such. For instance, I don’t know “how I think”, only that I do think but not as if I was in control of my thoughts, “there is someone inside my head, but it’s not me”, I have always been told that I “think too much”, which to my way of understanding is an unthinkable construct. I think too much because I cannot understand the nature of my own reality, my existence is based on perceptual evidence, but I quite often cannot make sense of what my senses are telling me? Every society has rules of decorum and groups within these societies share many of these same totems and taboos, while there are other groups that do not share in many of these same beliefs. Which group do I belong to and what if the one society “assigns me to” is an unacceptable group one I cannot agree too and least of all can accept? I am excluded from inclusion an participation within the “status-quo” group and banished into the unacceptable GWM population based on nothing I can see in a mirror, it’s only because of something everyone else can see about me that counts as “for real” about me that sticks. It’s not my ASD, that’s more of a behavioral disorder in my “theory of mind”. Someone has to experience this oddity in my makeup before they understand “there is something strange about that boys mind”. But, getting back to your situation, have you experienced any significant trauma physically and or emotionally devastating to your sense of self and where your life intersects with those other lives around you? I am thinking of something like have you experienced a traumatic stress disorder of some kind? PTSD, I know, everyone can claim a significant PTSD event at sometime in their life, but this one was a “tipping point” where you have not been able to tip back into the fully upright citizen you know you used to be like, sometimes, at least more often than than not? The reason why I ask this is because of such a tipping point occurrence happening in my own personal life, back in 2010. Have you ever experienced a “nervous breakdown”? Everybody probably knows someone who knows someone else that has had one. I think they are happening (or are at least being diagnosed) more often than we as a society would really care to admit. “Insanity is a perfectly rational explanation for adaptation to living inside an insanely difficult world and the society’s maladaptation to it” a paraphrase, see: Are you fighting the goads of your own transformation? See: ,Carl Gustav Jung, developed the usage to indicate a spontaneous attempt of the psyche to heal itself of unbearable conflict by melting down and then being reborn in a more adaptive form – a form of self healing often associated with the ,mid-life crisis, and psychotic breakdown, which can be viewed as a potentially productive process.,[2], Jung considered that psychotic episodes in particular could be understood as an ,existential crisis, which might be an attempt at self-reparation: in such instances metanoia could represent a shift in the balance of the personality away from the ,persona, towards the ,shadow, and the self.,[3] Similarly, Dabrowski’s theory of Positive Disintegration see: I have yet to recover or see any positive benefit from my own disintegration. Perhaps you have asked these questions early enough in your life situations, where separating the good from the not-as-good will not require a major course correction as so often is required when choosing the bad over good becomes a simple matter of pleasing those whose opinions you seek.
