What car do you still own that has lasted forever with minimal maintenance?
I own two vehicles like that. The one I’ve owned the longest is a 1973 BMW R75/5 motorcycle that I bought new/used in April of 1974. Was 19 then and wanted a bike that would be reliable runner for a long time. Rode it all the time until 1986 when I became too busy with work. It had 65K on the OD then and the only parts I had to replace to keep it running was a leaky cam seal and voltage regulator. I went thru tires, cables and batteries but those are wear items. It sat for 7 years before I took it out again and fired right up on the first try. It’s gone thru three more 7 year parks and always ran like a champ when put back on the road. My other vehicle is a 1988 Chevrolet G30 service van. Bought it 1994 as a former GTE fleet vehicle with 87K on the OD. The OD broke at 93K in 1995 and I never bothered to fix it, so think it now has 275–300K on it today. Mine looks just like this one with a ladder rack on top. Painted it’s grille black when I repainted the truck in 2000. So far I’ve just been replacing parts as they go out over the years. Nothing major since the 5.7L TBI and TH400 automatic have been trouble free so far. It’s AC compressor went out in 2002 so never bothered to replace it and other related components in order to run a R134A system. Has a wonky AM/FM radio that works when it wants to. The cab’s vinyl floor mat went to pot so replaced it using a $20 1/2″ thick rubber stall mat from Tractor Supply. The driver seat got shot so switched it with the rarely used passenger seat. I may get two decent newer seats from a wrecking yard. It can use two new wing vents (I have one), new weather stripping for the cab door windows and the sliding side door. It’s hardboard headliner snapped apart when being removed to run wires to the rear so will replace it with glue-on foil-backed Styrofoam sheet insulation. Got four new tie rods on hand to install when that time comes. I had to repaint it in 2000 due to the factory white paint coming off the primer on the right side of the van. I shot a primer/sealer over the entire body then repainted it white. That paint started popping off on the left side of the van in 2016 so I sealed the paint edges with thinned shellac then touched-up the spots with white Rustoleum rust inhibitive enamel. Can’t tell the difference when 10 feet away plus it’s stopped the popping. The power steering gear leaks so been topping off it’s reservoir once a week with cheap ATF. The engine uses or seeps 1 quart of oil every 300 miles so add a quart when needed and change the oil every two years since it stays relatively fresh. I monitor the color of the ATF and change the tranny fluid and filter when it starts becoming darker. It’s been dead reliable over the years so plan on driving it while fixing things until the motor conks out. Then I’ll slap another engine in and keep on using it.

What fuel additive is the best for my Chevrolet Colorado?
You shouldn’t need to use any additives if the truck uses top-tier gasoline of the proper octane most of the time. The majors use proprietary additive packages that’ll keep the fuels system and combustion chambers clean. The cut-rate stations’ gasoline use a cheaper generic additive packages that contain a lesser amount or none of their proprietary additives so running their stuff all the time can call for the use of an additive every so often. Failing ignition and engine components can create a need for using an additive before and after those are replaced. I’ve been driving an ’88 Chevy G30 service van since 1994. Most of it’s use was in urban driving for short distances to jobs and material stores. I used top-tier gas most of the time but the 5.7L engine would still get carboned up inside so added a bottle of Chevron Tectron once or twice a year when I had an out-of-town job were I could run a tankful of gas out at highway speeds. The engine ran better for several months afterwards. Sometimes I got stuck with a tank of crummy gas so used Berryman’s B-12 in the tank to make the engine run better on that crud until half a tank was used up where I could top-off with fresh quality gas. My van once sat idle for three years with half tank of gas and ran like crap when I finally fixed it’s problems. I didn’t want to drain and toss the 15 gallons of old gas so dumped in a half gallon of B-12 then jumped on the rear bumper for 15 minutes to slosh the tank’s contents around to get intermixed. The doctored old gas made the engine run a lot better so topped off the tank with Valero mid-range and ran that mixture down to E before refilling with Valero’s 87 regular. A few years later I added a big bottle of Techron to see if it would unstick the van’s fuel level sending unit as advertised and it did.
