In this incredible photo you can see genius Nikola Tesla in his laboratory. Electricity is discharging across the air-gap in Tesla’s circuit. The Tesla coil produced currents with a far higher frequency and voltage than other devices of the time. https://t.co/FdPUEOYiyA
An electrical discharge from a Tesla coil arching towards a man's tongue. #TongueOutTuesday -Don't Try This At Home- A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit designed by inventor Nikola Tesla in 1891. #science #videos #experiment #footage #electricity https://t.co/4F7vft1XgG
It's Saturday night, so of course Mr Haigh has made a miniature Tesla coil, a high frequency transformer circuit which creates an alternating electric field than can induce currents in nearby electrical components. https://t.co/mtKNi5z3Qd

Playing music from high voltage arcs using a flyback transformer 😊🔥💯 And yes, the sound is coming from the arcs 😂 I connected the flyback transformer to the circuit from my Audio Modulated Tesla Coil https://t.co/CC4hg3WQc7
The Tesla coil is an electrical circuit used to produce high-voltage, low-current electricity. Their sparkling discharges are caused by ionisation of the surrounding air by the strong electric field which allows it to conduct electricity. Ionized gasses are also called plasma. https://t.co/i2l2Bb31fB

No - discharging the capacitor would overstress the transistor and could burn it out. The capacitor should be reconnected in parallel with the coil primary. That way the transistor would draw current through the coil (stopping oscillation for that time) and the current would then continue as oscillating current. Using a MOSFET is not a great idea since they have significant capacitance from drain to gate (as well as between all terminals). That will make driving the gate rather difficult as feedback current will flow into the gate drive circuit (since this is a SPICE simulation it may not display this performance. It would be better to use a BJT power transistor with fairly high frequency capability (not 2N3055 or TIP32!) and high collector voltage. I would recommend using a fairly short duty-cycle drive waveform since resonance will be suppressed during the drive portion. It’s a class C driver and conduction angle should be down around 20 - 30 degrees.
The original Tesla coil, as designed by Tesla, does not use transistors. However, using a transistor can simplify the circuit’s construction immensely. Which transistor to use depends on the voltage and power rating you want to achieve! Here’s some examples: ,single transistor tesla coil
In order to have a resonant circuit, one must find out whether the capacitive value is physically connected in series or in parallel to the primary coil winding. If the capacitive value is connected in series, then reactive voltage levels can be produced across either component at the combination’s resonant frequency, and it represents the minimum value to input current, i.e., it can take a lot of current to power it If the capacitive value is connected in parallel to the coil, thus making up a tank circuit, then at the combination’s resonant frequency, a maximum amount of electron movement known as “current” will be produced between the two components at the resonant frequency . At the same time, at that resonant frequency, the tank circuit’s input current requirement are at an absolute minimum. These two features are the signature of a resonant tank circuit, which is the input section of a Tesla coil.
Your room lights went off when you connected your Tesla coil to the house wiring ? That implies several things. Your Tesla coil is connected to house wiring. That makes it a mains shock hazard. Please use appropriate protection. Your Tesla coil - if working - will be a rich source of mains borne radio-frequency interference. Please consider the rules of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) or its equivalent in your jurisdiction. You may be breaking a few laws. Your household power circuit is connected to your household light circuit, which is not normal. They should be on separate breakers. Please have this checked out by a licensed electrician. Your Tesla coil drew enough current to trip a circuit breaker ? Please consider the wire gauge you have used to make this device. In Australia, that would be a minimum of 16 A, or 2.5mm square copper. User-11350918151920609530, pointed out most of the electrical reasons the device might not be working. Just take great care with this thing. It is likely to be lethal to anyone who comes anywhere near it. And if you kill somebody, you are guilty of at least manslaughter. Not good. Regards, Tony Barry
Dear aspirant, Thanks for your request! Well as per wikipedia and other sources I guess it does! I was initially confused about the circuit, but after finding out that there is this parasitic capacitance on the output of the secondary winding, all became clear! Let me explain how it works. Below is the picture of the circuit : The stray or parasitic capacitance that exists on the output of the secondary winding. You don’t add it, but the capacitor exists naturally there. Also in case of a Tesla coil the toroid on the top helps with creating this capacitance. The way the transformer needs to be connected, by showing those transformer dots. The components used are as follows: Q: 2N2222, or 2N5550 or similar regular NPN with >50V VCE and >60 hfe D: 1N4148, or 1N400x (x is a number) R: >= 22kOhm T: my hand made transformer I showed in the video. With primary of 10 turns (could be fewer depending on where you connect the wires) and secondary of around 750 turns.

Electricity moves around all the time but to flow continuously, there has to continue to be a source of charge and an oppositely charged place that it’s attracted to. When you get a static shock it stops very quickly because the available charge runs out and things are back in equilibrium. In a battery it continues for some time until the stored charge is used up (and the internal chemical reaction producing the charge is depleted.) Normally we use wires because they conduct easily- small voltages will flow through many metals with little trouble. Air can conduct electricity, but it’s very bad at it. The voltages we normally work with aren’t usually high enough to overcome its tendency to ,not, conduct. What the Tesla coil is doing is generating an extremely high voltage - in effect, artificial lightning. It builds up a charge to higher and higher voltages using a resonating transformer and an air-gapped capacitor. When the voltage gets higher than air’s breakdown voltage, the air suddenly becomes able to conduct and the charge on the coil then finds the shortest path back to ground through it, either directly to the oppositely charged plate on the other side of the spark gap, or depending on how the electrodes are set up, it can flow directly to ground or dissipating in air streamers. The current does indeed flow in a circuit from high potential to low. However, the total current is very low and it runs out very quickly. Then the system needs to charge up again, but this whole process happens many times a second using alternating current. This is what creates the audible buzzing tone characteristic of a Tesla coil, it’s the frequency of the alternating current.
