Why do people doubt the electric car industry?

Because there’s reason to doubt it. Of course, my points here largely relate to pure electric cars, not necessarily hybrids. Let’s look at the biggest factors first… Range, charging and cost. Range - Other than a handful of examples, most, if not all offered by Tesla, a pure electric car will only get about 100 miles on a full charge. Fine for your every day commute in most cases, but what if you live far from your nearest major airport? They’d cope better in places like the UK, where that distance is a pretty sizeable road trip. But in larger places like the US where some people drive stupid distances just to go to work? They wont do. Charging - Put simply, there isn’t a whole lot of infrastructure specifically for electric cars, even less when it comes to rapid charging. This differs by country, but either way, you’re waiting 20+ minutes for ~80% charge at best. Worst case, you could be talking an hour or more. Compared to the 1–5 minutes it takes to gas up and go, it’s not hard to see why this puts people off. Imagine getting caught in traffic making you run late for your flight and you’re running low on fuel. Now imagine that with a battery powered car. Cost - This one is sort of a false argument. It’s a lot like the PC vs console debate. Electric cars are PCs, ICE cars are console. The PC has a higher upfront cost, but is cheaper in the long run due to deeper game discounts and overall lower prices on new games. In terms of cars, that difference is largely down to maintenance, fuel costs, and road tax (or similar forms of vehicular tax if present in your country). There are some cheap electric cars out there, but again, they barely manage 100 miles on a full battery in the real world. The only ones offering reasonable range are pretty much just Tesla’s offerings, which, at it’s cheapest is $35K before incentives. If we take say… Ontario’s EV incentive is $14K, which, presuming I’m understanding how incentives work, brings it down to $21K. Sounds nice, but if you’re looking for something cheap, but new, that’ll get you from point A to B, you can get something like a Chevy Spark which starts at $13K. This problem is only exaggerated in other markets. In the UK, you’re looking at ~£25K based on a conversion of the price, with estimates going as high as £35K, take the £4.5K Government grant off, that’s still £30.5K for the cheapest EV with a reasonable range. Again, if someone just wants a point A to point B machine, and they’re not bothered about specs, you can buy a Toyota Aygo from £9.3K, how about a Skoda Citigo from £8.8K? How about the cheapest car on offer in Britain (as far as I’m aware), the Dacia Sandero from just under £7K (That’s a little over $9K US). For one model 3, based on estimates, you could buy 4 Dacia Sanderos and have change to spare. Then there are other concerns, which may not be valid, but they still push people away. This is things like battery life, that is to say, the life of the battery itself. Think of your day to day experience with batteries, a phone will come to mind, most people will charge their phones from the wall, that usually means high amperage charging, especially with the popularity of quick charging these days. This gives people negative attitudes towards cars. People tend to swap their phones out every 2 years. A car? Some people will run it till the scrap it, which can be 10 years or more. Again, it’s not necessarily a valid criticism of EVs, but it will act to keep some people away from them. Then there are other points like battery safety, again, not exactly valid, but they push people away. Especially with recent reports of faulty batteries from certain manufacturers in the tech industry, I guess the idea that you could potentially be sitting on a time bomb doesn’t sit well with people. Then there’s probably one of the most important. You’ve had a long trip, your EV is nearly flat, you get home, and in such a rush to do whatever, by the end of the night you’ve forgot to put your car on charge. The morning rolls around, you get ready for work, start up your car, only to find you don’t have the range… In an ICE, your nearest fuel station is probably within a few miles, in my case, there’s one less than a mile away. Start her up, go to the fuel station, gas and go. EV? Unless you’re sitting on some cool tech the industry would like, you’re going to have to look to alternate means of getting to work. It wont be a common occurrence, but how many times have you forgot to charge your phone? It’ll happen, especially if they’ve only recently switched over to electric, and it’ll put people off. Then there are various other factors… For example, I work in a warehouse. If you didn’t know, warehouses have adopted EVs in the masses. Personally, I generally operate one of these: A Linde T20 PPT. We have 6 of them, 5 of them are sitting at about 1500 hours. the other one is at about 500 hours. They ALL discharge at different rates. For example, in an 10 hour shift, I can run PP5 down to about 90% from 100. Whereas PPE (hasn’t been given a number, so I just throw E on the end because it has forks for Euro Pallets), in an 8 hour shift, can be run as low as 50%. All the others range from 80–60% in an 8 hour shift. These are vehicles designed to be used around the clock. Granted, the workload wont entirely be the same, but the ones I use the most; PP2, PP5 and PPE, all run down to roughly the same charge (same charge that each of them achieve, not the same charge for all 3 of them) every time I use them for a shift. With an experience like that, it makes you wonder if electric cars suffer the same fate of inconsistent battery drain. I’d rather not play with money like that and risk it. If using EVs at work has taught me anything, it’s that German EVs should be avoided like the plague, of the 6 PPTs we have, 3 cut out when trying to use the horn. We also have 3 VNAs from Linde, all 3 are suffering minor problems relating to the electrics, especially with the dead man pedal. In short: people have their reasons, some valid, some not. All I know is that I’m waiting for Toyota to release a decent EV, and once EVs are common place, I shall never consider anything that has be touched by the Germans. Germans and electrics don’t mix.
