My answer is based on my experience from working in a similar organizational set up (not related to Mahindra) Why Mahindra hasn't launched more Ssangyong products since acquiring the company circa 2010 Challenge behind launching imported products in Indian market -, Ssangyong had no manufacturing presence in India at the time of acquisition, and would have required MM to launch a fully imported (thus costly) product in the market. (Costly because of import duties, added logistic cost for vehicle and spare parts). Mahindra overcame this challenge by investing in a local assembly set-up for Rexton, and launched the SUV in the Endeveour-Captiva-Fortuner segment. Now the question was why not follow the suit and launch other products via same route!? Why Mahindra hasn't launched more products after the Rexton - ",Ssangyong" brand is relatively new for Indians. ,Even on the global level, it is a lesser known brand (as compared to other new brands in India - Renault, Datsun, etc.) So, as I see it, markets weren't really going crazy in speculation of getting a Ssangyong product. A proof of that was Rexton, despite of being a well engineered (though old gen) product with a Mercedes driveline, hasnt done exceptionally well on sales charts. T,o put it in a perspective - Mahindra did more good to Rexton(Ssangyong) in India by assembling it locally, providing sales and service support through its dealer network. ,Having said that,, the first launch should have helped Mahindra to 1) gauge the market response to Ssangyong brand 2) place the brand in consumers mind, before launching high stake products (read below),. What lies ahead, - New Product launches, - Ssnagyong's latest success, ,Tivoli, will be showcased at the auto-expo in 2016, and will possibly be launched in India as a Creta/Brezza competitor in the mini-SUV space. Technology sharing with Ssangyong, - Technology sharing news (within company brands) isnt always made public. So to assume that the latest variants of Scorpio, XUV havent't got any link with Ssangyong will be incorrect. There are few that I know about - the new XUV500 shares its auto transmission with Tivoli, that was developed by Japanese supplier Asin Seiki. The KUV-100 uses a petrol engine derived from Tivoli's 1.6 litre petrol. There are possibly more! To sum up, Ssangyong wasn't a brand that could have been launched in India with closed eyes. But Mahindra IS utilizing Ssangyong products/technology to its best capacity and in my view...timing it pretty well.
