There is some misunderstanding here. 4H merely locks in 4 wheel drive as in it engages the power to the front(or rarely rear) wheels. It has nothing to do with whether the front axle is diff locked to the rear axle. Obviously it is with a part time transfer case but this is not always the case with all transfer cases. The 4 simply means the transfer case is engaged in AWD or 4x4(part time) mode The H means there is no gear reduction happening at the transfer case.
Can we please please stop calling anything that has slightly more ground clearance than a sedan as a SUV? For reference this is what a real SUV does: And this is wannabe SUVs call “wading” If I am looking to buy a SUV, the questions I will ask the dealer is - does it have diff locks? give me wading depth. Give me approach and departure angles. Can I shift between 2H and 4H on the fly? I am unlikely to get an answer for this for Brezza or its clone Urban Cruiser. Now I love Toyota, have one, my daily runner, about 1.3 lac km, 16 years old. Nothing ever happens to it. It is a boring car but is a very reliable car. And it is pure Toyota. And what I like about Toyota India is they are extremely smart, super smart. Their market segmentation is very simple but effective. Do not get into the “plebeian” segment with thin margins and where you are likely to be killed by Maruti and Hyundai. For appearance sake, create cars like Etios, rebadged stuff like Glanza and make people believe we are active in all segments. While people are delusional about our presence in the entry segment, let us make a killing in the “politician” segment, i.e. Innova and Fortuner. Let the moolah roll in. Fat fat margins. Let us create an aura around the Toyota name and make the suckers believe that Corolla Altis is a premium sedan while we sell the same thing as “pleb class sedan” in USA. While we are at it, let us also introduce Yaris and price it higher than Vento TSI. What do you mean Vento is turbocharged petrol with more torque and has better DSG AT? Indian customer does not need those “things”. If I am looking for a no-fuss cars below 10 lakhs, I will go with Tata or Volkswagen.
Originally Chevrolet took over a Lada Niva 1998 2323 platform to boost lackluster presence in Europe and Asia. GM invested quite some and made Niva II a much greater vehicle improving interior and suspension for better ride. That allowed them to move around 700,000 units around Russia, Europe and Central Asia - a sort of feat for both Lada and Chevrolet, both considered junk brands in Europe at the time. By 2013 it has become long in the tooth and GM proposed upgrade aka Niva III, but was in disagreement over the scale of upgrade. Based on the disagreement GM decided to retire to Detroit and develop an all-new vehicle mostly based on Lada parts to put Lada before the fact. That was the end product in 2014. About the same time a new Cold War has started and the American upgrades has started to look pricy. Lada: why do you want this body part curved? It adds 0,5% to the cost! GM: straight is ugly! Lada: Okay, let's have it corrugated for consensus. GM: here is 190hp V6. Lada: are you kidding? We have an 82 hp straight four since 1969. It runs on moonshine and the only way to kill it is to run without oil. Why do you want to add extra moving part to ruin reliability? We propose more displacement for 106 hp. GM: here is 8 gear automatic transmission and front wheel drive. Lada: are you kidding? What part of consumers are homosexuals? Real men want manual and 4wd. We are proposing 12 gear stick with transfer box and three diff-locks for off-road instead. All things considered the end product has turned to Lada’s vision: Chevrolet said it won’t put its badge on a mix of Toyota RAV4 and agricultural tractor. Although given the rural audience it is very likely that Lada is right.
I love Toyotas though they produce some of the most boring cars. However, boredom is more than compensated by the peace of mind that Toyota delivers. At a first glance, some of the Toyota cars ARE overpriced, especially that stupid shit Corolla Altis diesel., Let us look at how Toyota India rips off Indian customers with their pricing. [Source - Carwale] You see there. Top line Octavia with ESP, HHC, traction control and a freaking diff locks on a sedan and lot more comfort features is priced only 4 lacs more than Corolla Altis diesel,. And with Skoda you always have an opportunity to knock down the prices by 1 lac to 2 lac depending on the season. Toyota only will give you a free coffee in their showrooms. Why did I add Ciaz there? It costs whole 10 lacs less than Altis and has a 94 bhp diesel engine with higher torque of 225 nm. AND a car costing freaking 23 lacs has a puny 87 bhp engine with run-of-the-mill torque of 205 nm. Octavia is 141 bhp by the way with loads of torque and it is automatic too. Much better, reworked DSG. And no, ever since Zac Hollis came in Skoda service has become much better. Unless you want the Toyota brand name, you are better off buying Octavia (much better car) or get a Ciaz and put the 10 lacs you saved in FD. Or get a top end Yaris if you still want Toyota name. My Corolla petrol is 16 years old and I can smash that Altis diesel to a sorry mess in straight line racing. On the other hand, their popular models Innova Crysta and Fortuner are worth every paisa., Yes, they are slightly overpriced compared to the competition. But offer much better reliability (Endeavor is a better car, but we don’t know when Ford India will shut down) and peace of mind, especially if you live in Tier 2 or Tier 3 cities. Go with the Germans if you are looking for sedans and go with Toyota if you are shopping for MPVs or SUVs. I love my Corolla, but Corolla Altis sucks big time. Way overpriced and Honda with its overpriced Civic giving Toyota a run for its money when it comes to stupid pricing.
As far as I know, the 2015 Toyota RAV4 is already full-time AWD. The differential drive lock can only be temporarily engaged for extremely slippery conditions and only up to certain speeds. The diff-lock only affects the amount of slip between front and rear axles, not whether or not they are engaged. So, unless you happen to be stuck in the mud or snow, there is typically no reason to engage the diff-lock. At speeds over 20 mph or so, the diff-lock won't be doing much. Full-time AWD, ABS, VSC, and ETC have much more to do with maintaining vehicle control at that point.
There are lots of animations and educational videos online that explain how the various types of differentials work. O,pen , diff, erential This is the most fundamental type of differential found in most vehicles. A pinion gear connected to the engine gives motion to a hypoid gear, which rotates the assembly of 4 interlocking conical gears, 2 of which are freewheeling and 2 of which lead to the two semi-axles of the vehicle wheels. For badge value and electronic gizmos go for the Audi. For long lasting reliability, less maintenance ruggedness, choose the Toyota. Yes, Fortuner has more body roll than the Audi. Its Utilitarian than luxurious. The Q3 has got 5 star safety rating & equipment (ESP, ABS, EBD, electronic diff lock, a multitude of airbags etc.) But the after sales service cannot be compared with that of toyota. Not to mention the heavily prices parts and service costs of the Audi. Fortuner will last for a generation. But the Audi-Max 4-5years and 1.5lakh kms, after that you will start having electrical issues which may cost you a bomb! Just imagine if your starter fails. It will minimum cost you 25-30k where as the Fortuner may cost you a little less than the half of it. The decision is yours! Have a safe journey!
Toyota Fortuner is one of the popular SUV’s in India and has a separate Fan Base. It is offered by a Diesel engine which is a 2755 cc unit producing 175 bhp while the Petrol engine is 2694 cc producing 164 bhp available with Manual and Automatic transmission. It has a mileage of 10.01 to 15.04 kmpl. It has a length of 4795mm, width of 1855mm and a wheelbase of 2745m. Here are the reasons Why Fortuner’s are loved by most of the Indians: Looks:, The big and bold looks of First generation Fortuner was liked by many people. The secong generation became more popular because of it’s LEXUS Style looks with slimmer Headlights and Tailights, LED DRL’s and Backlight and some bodylines around the side which made it more Sharper and a much Premium Look. It neither look too big nor too midsize. Diesel Engine:, The 2.8L Diesel Engine which is now discontinued; was one of the reasons of Fortuner’s Popularity. This Engine was not only Powerful, But also it was High Efficient. The response of the engine was quite good and impressive. However, Now it only offers a 2.4L Diesel Engine which offers same bhp but slightly less powerful as compared to 2.8L. Still, because of this reason, The Fortuner will be depriciated. Ride Quality on Both Off/On Road:, It is available in both 4X2(5 variants) and 4X4(1 variant Automatic). Being a Rear-Wheel Drive Car; It attracts those car enthusiast who love to drift and Burnout but only skilled ones can do it. Also, it has the great capablity in offroad though the current generation generation does not have diff locks and all wheel drive which was in previous generation and reason which made popular at that time. The ones who don’t do offroad got to 4X2 offering 5 variants depending as per the Budget. Reliablity:, Toyota cars are one of the most reliable cars in world including the Fortuner. Even If you drive 1–2 lakh Kilometers, it won’t give any major issues if one maintains properly. Also, it’s maintainance is low compared to it’s rivals and other lower segment SUV’s Although the service intervals are high. After Sales and Service:, Toyota Offers a Great After Sales and Service. It’s overall Service Quality is good with Customer Satisfaction and also offers Qservice and Quick service which services your car around an hour or more for those customers who require car urgently. Major Toyota Owners give their cars at authorised service centres rather than giving to other service centres. Resale Value: ,Fortuner has a High Resale Value. Because of it’s high popularity, There’s hardly any drop in prices in Resale Market. One More Reason is that Fortuner owners use it for a long period of time and didn’t wish to sell even using more than a lakh kilometers. Also, some of them upgrade their cars to Fortuner or add one more in their collection. In some Areas, Specially in the North India, Owning Fortuner is a pride for them. It becomes a Status Symbol which creates a separate Fanbase. The Facelifted Fortuner was showcased globally few months ago with an addition of Legender. Hope both the models Enter into Indian Market as soon as possible. If you like the answer, Kindly Upvote the Answer, and follow me for such Reviews.
Defenders? No. And I own 4 of them. Ancient design, Underpowered, noisy, slow and unreliable. Bad heaters, leaky seals, dodgy gearboxes, soft half shafts, CV joints made of chocolate, don't come with diff locks or limited slip. Bodywork is beer can flimsy and will kill you in a roll. The chassis is strong and the suspension is supple. So why do I use them? ( I have used other 4x4s. I crossed the Russian federation in a umm alter, the Sahara in a Lada Niva and the Sahara again in a Ford Ranger. Also used Toyots extensively and MB unimogs) But the fact that they are primitive turns out to be an advantage. Once you go seriously overlanding you will break every single 4x4 on earth. Then you have to fix the thing. Try fixing a Unimog gearbox on a mountain in the Sahara. Or a back axle oil seal on a Toyota. Or reweld a chassis on a brand new Isuzu trooper after exactly 3 days in the Sahara. With Landrover Defenders you are never going to get in a stock vehicle and go live in the bush. You have work to do first. You buy a second hand one to keep the custom duties low. Then you tear it down and rebuild it. Now you know how every bit of it works and you have the right tools . Engine is underpowered….live with it. It translates into better range. Bring spare fuel and water pumps. Upgrade engine hoses to silicone and goodridge. Put in AGM batteries. Upgrade alternator to 120 amp Bosch. Run on top class synthetic lube oil. Upgrade oil cooler. Noisy….. stick in a bunch of dynamat. Slow…..is good. You are not on tarmac. Reliability…..build carefully. The design is reliable enough so it boils down to workmanship. Build like it is an aircraft. Wire critical bolts. Loctite every damn thing. Learn about Unbrako bolts. Install a fuel conditioning system ..I use a pair that I can switch between. Heaters and aircon…..you dont need them. Man up. It is only 47 C outside. Gearboxes….rebuild and upgrade bearings. Install thermostatic oil cooler. TX box…LT230 is good. But put in a torque biasing diff if running on sand, gravel, mud. Use really good synthetic fluid. Halfshafts……upgrade to aftermarket stuff. Lots to choose from. CVs…Ashcroft do tough ones. Diffs….go lsd or lockers. The suicide alu body? Put a 2 inch external rollcage on. No winch, no bullbar, no aggressive lights. Try to keep outside looking stock as possible. No bling. BTW Shocks…upgrade to bypass. fwiw You are gonna do this on every truck. Tires…BFG ATs are my favourite. 265x16 Now put in a big ass fuel tank, spares and camping kit. Engel beer cooler. Hit the road. See you in a year or two. PS My point in this post is that the 4x4 and you are an integrated system. So a machine you can understand and fix is much much safer. You pretty much always bring back the same number of Defenders that you started out with. The old International Scout was like that too. But I have abandoned damn near everything else including unimog. As it happens I love Unimogs. They are the most stress free way of covering seriously bad ground. But they are ridiculously thirsty and complicated as hell. When they break they are in the shop for days and keeping full spares in a field camp us prohibitively expensive. Old Jeeps and Broncos were good. New ones…meh. Okay for city slickers just pretending. Toyota 4.2 diesel engines are deadly…a whole bunch had big end journal bearings that leached and threw rods.some were good but …. How do you know. Strip down time. The older 4.0 diesel Was excellent btw. These are being recycled from coaster buses. Brisbane Motors in Aus are searching Japan for them. 5000 dollars second hand. Having said all that if you are going into really bad country forget machinery and go SAS on it. Put your gear on a mule and walk. In 30 days you can cover over 600 miles of really broken country. No poor sap carrying his own gear can march fast enough to even see your dust.
Yes, Mercedes G Series, Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover. Some achieve diff lock w electronic limited slip.
