What is wrong with Tata Nexon?
The biggest mistake that Tata did with the Nexon is to offer customers a quality and safety level that they are not used to. Airbags, thicker sheet metal, ISOFIX child seats, wheels that actually fill the wheel-well properly are just to name a few. All of these safety features do add a certain weight to the vehicle and so does the strong sheet metal. Customers in India are satisfied by the “Kitna Deti hai” mentality, they do not care that in the zeal to extract more fuel-efficiency, a simple collision in those “Tin ka dabbas” can add multiple garlanded photo-frames on your wall. I have owned a Nexon Diesel for the past 15 months, clocked about 23,000 kilometers, had a truck hit my front driver door yet went ahead with only minor dents and scratches, had another accident where the rear passenger door got stuck against an electric pole while the vehicle was rolling back on a slope ( a cousin had mistakenly disengaged the park brake) yet the door refused to twist - as we are used to seeing with maruti’s. I was severely pessimistic before buying the Nexon, now I realise that I’ve bought the best car I could have in that category. It’s way better than Ecosport and Duster, my other two choices ( Sorry, Brezza was not considered as I would like to ensure maximum safety for my family ) However, Tata should have gone the Maruti way, reduced the weight further by Thin sheet metal that crumples when pressed by bare hands Under-size and thinner tyres that offer even better fuel-efficiency at the cost of loss of traction. These would have increased the fuel efficiency even further and would’ve ensured that the Nexon sells even more ! After all, in our country, who cares for Safety when you can get more fuel-efficiency To add : I still consistently get over 20 kmpl in the city with AC always on and I never ever drive in ECO mode.

MY OPINION: I would go with Ford Ecosoprt due to the, Kerb Weight., The added Kerb Weight does really ,makes a difference, when a car crashes but it also makes the ,car prone to slow breaking,. The Venue is light by 284 kg so it can definitely brake better than the Ford but we’re here for the end result which is a collision. In the end, mostly a Ford wins.

Is the Tata Nexon better than most other budget SUV's?
No There are other cars in the segment which offer better features and performance when compared to Tata Nexon. Tata Nexon offers very less features when you compare it with its competitors like Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 300 and Ford EcoSport. Talking about performance Nexon offers good performance. But the XUV 300 provides class leading performance. Even the turbo petrol version of Hyundai Venue provides class leading performance. Even in terms of space, the XUV 300 beats Nexon. XUV 300 offers lots of legroom for the rear seat passengers (but the boot space has been compromised for this purpose). But Nexon offers good build quality which has been proven by Global NCAP with the 5 star safety rating. But that doesn't mean that other cars in this segment are unsafe. The top spec variants of Venue and XUV 300 comes loaded with many safety features. Venue comes with 6 airbags, vehicle stability management, ISOFIX child seat mounts and hill start assist. XUV 300 comes with 7 airbags, hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front parking sensors, Electronic stability program, disc brakes on all four wheels and Tyre pressure monitoring system. Talking about maintenance, I feel Brezza and Venue will be easy to maintain as they have many service stations throughout the country. Even Mahindra provides good service but it is costlier to maintain. The maintenance cost of Tata Nexon is low, but the service quality and service center experience needs to be improved. If someone wants a car with class leading performance, lots of features and space then they can go for XUV300. But if they require tech features and decent space then they can go for Hyundai Venue.

You will get an entry level variant only.
Which car is better in diesel variant? S-Cross or Duster?
Answering based on considering these exact cars and owning a S-Cross 1.3 (Pre- facelift) for the past 2 years. Duster Pros: Engine options-110ps and 85ps diesel Excellent ride quality (seriously its very good!). Glides over bad roads. SUV image. Truly looks bold and rugged. 85ps engine very tractable and breeze to use in city. Second and third gear ratios are so good that you can use them like an automatic in city. 110 ps has good power for highway cruising. Fuel efficient (13–21kmpl) Good boot space. Ground clearance so huge you can’t run over a puppy. Neutral: Despite a 6th gear in the 110ps version, the 6th gear isn’t really tall. Mild turbo lag is also an issue with the 110ps. Has lost its shine in the competition today. No longer a hot commodity. Rightly so, for it is not updated well and horribly priced. Resale value has gone down. Also facelift is expected in a year or so. Cons: Outrageously priced. Not at all VFM. Pathetic plastics for a 10+ lakh rupee car. Cost cutting evident at some places. Poor legroom (for such a large car!) Speaker quality is bad. Should have been much better for such an expensive car. Renault service is simply horrible. Non-availability of spares, poor communication with customers, poorly trained technicians and so on. Duster sold in Indian market has smaller airbags and inferior safety design/metal. Hard clutch. Better than the previous version which had a brick like clutch. But still a pain in the rear to ride in inching traffic. 110ps engine isn’t reliable. Bound to give one or the other problem. Injector failure is a common issue. Most VFM version: RXS 85ps S-Cross Pros: Surprisingly not built like a tin can. Has solid build quality (not like Germans though!). Just try lifting the bonnet. Disc brakes all around. It does wonders on road. Very confidence inspiring even in emergency situations. Good ride quality. Especially on highways. Slight stiffness can be sensed over bad roads at slow speeds though. Ridiculously fuel efficient. Thanks to the superbly tuned 1.3 multijet engine and excellent aerodynamics (Drag Coeff of 0.33!). Never has it gone down below 15.5kmpl in city(inching traffic jam for hours with A/C) and best on highway is 24.7 kmpl. Safety features are standard across all variants. Dual Airbags, ABS+EBD, ISOFIX, etc. Projector headlamps standard feature. You get features like Cruise control, touchscreen, GPS, Auto A/C, Smart key etc. on Zeta variant which is less than Rs.10 lakhs ex-showroom. No other car in the segment can match its VFM tag. Service costs are definitely lesser than duster and general reliability is much better. Midrange power/torque is so good that highway cruising at three digit speeds is bliss! Neutral: Facelift version looks good to me but then again that’s subjective. The pre facelift I own version looks bland. Good legroom and headroom. Decent boot space. Seats could have been firmer. They aren’t bad but could have been padded better. Cons: SHVS is just a gimmick and has added more weight! The 88bhp 1.3 multijet engine is adequate at best. Suffers from mild turbo lag. Best ridden sedately. The first three gears are boring. Fourth and fifth gear are fun on highways. Hence its a bit annoying to ride in city (my personal opinion). Typical Maruti rattles and vibes are present. Can be solved but should have been rectified for a so called premium product. OK music quality. Average person will not complain but an audiophile won’t be satisfied. Engine sounds gruff especially when accelerating hard. Most VFM version: 1.3 Zeta. I suggest you consider Creta 1.4 and Ecosport. Creta is pricey and not at all VFM but is very successful model. I am not a fan of its looks. Interior feels claustrophobic (high window line). However it makes up having good service backup and reliability. The 1.4 diesel is fuel efficient and very refined. 1.6 is too pricey. Ecosport is smaller than all three above cars. Again its a successful model and priced in the same ballpark. It is also overpriced but I would say worth it. Has strong build quality, superb interiors with high quality materials. The 1.5 diesel has a good balance of power and fuel efficiency. Ford has reduced its service costs greatly. Quality of service varies from place to place. Downside of the Ecosport is mainly its size. Poor legroom and again a claustrophobic interior. The suspension is stiff and the car gets uncomfortable over bad patches. My answer may have a slight tilt towards S-Cross since I own one and know more about it than other models. I suggest you take test drives of all the cars on good and bad roads. Take them on highways especially if your usage is bound to be for long rides too.
