For Germany, I see a relevant target group: Wealthy entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors or other prosperous people who use a luxury car as company car today, for example a Porsche Panamera. In Germany these people who use the car mainly for their business are eligible to deduct its full price from their taxes, including the operating cost. This runs over a period of five years, so if the car costs 100,000 Euro they can deduct 20,000 Euro per year from their taxable income. In return they have to add one percent per month for the benefit of using the car privately, so in our example they have to add 1,000 Euro per month to their taxable income. This is also valid if a company gives an executive a car as a part of his compensation. The company can deduct the list price of the car over 5 years, and the exec has to pay taxes for one percent of the car price per month. In order to promote electric cars, german government has changed the tax rules on electric cars. If you use an electric car as a company car, you do not have to pay taxes for one percent of the car price per month, you only have to pay for 0.5%. So for a 100,000 Euro Taycan you only have to pay taxes for 500 Euro per month, which are not more than 235 Euro (depending from what you earn). The option to save taxes is always a strong incentive to buy stuff;-)
Duh, no. Tesla Model S hardware options: Version (2) - Long Range or Performance Paint color (5) Wheels (3) Interior (3) The Full Self-Driving option on the Model S and the $500 MP3 recording of motor noise on Taycan are software. Porsche Taycan: Models (2) - Turbo or Turbo S Colors (10) Wheels (5) Wheel paint (6) Tires (2) Interior Color/material (9) Seats (2) Packages (2) Premium or Performance Exterior design packages (21) Performance options (7) Lights and vision (2) Comfort and Assistance features (6). Interior options (24) Interior Leather (6) Interior wood (1) Interior Carbon Fiber (6) Interior Aluminum (4) Audio options (2) E-mobility, basically cables (11) Wheel accessories (3) I didn’t include accessories for either car. When I added up the TayCan options, they totaled over $50,000 on top of $185,000 for the car (Turbo S).
It’s not easy to count from the Porsche configurator, but I got around 106 options, excluding non-attached accessories like floor mats, fire extinguisher and the fake engine noise MP3 file ($500).
So there has been this thing called a global pandemic which has affected all sorts of manufacturers and their operations, along with global supply chain disruptions and raw materials and finished components supply. Some countries have had more severe lockdown restrictions, and others have yet to recover from a labor and materials shortage. In the past couple of decades consumers have seen very short dream-fulfillment cycles. Six months might be considered reasonable in former days, when instant luxury was not the norm….and it is not the norm right now, either.
How worried should Tesla be about competition from the Porsche Taycan? Well, first of all, the Porsche Taycan isn’t for sale yet and its supercharging network doesn’t exist. Until the car is actually for sale and the supercharging network is in place, there is no competition. Right now, this is a smokemobile, similar to the software term, vaporware. The claims don’t mean anything until there’s actually a car to drive. I should point out that Porsche (and Jaguar) got forced into making a fully electric car because they were losing marketshare. They aren’t playing to win at this point, they’re trying not to lose. They seem to have gotten hit the hardest and that’s why their electric cars are serious entries. But bear in mind that both automakers are introducing their first generation electric cars ,a full ten years, after Tesla did. They are coming to the party quite late. They will retain Porsche and Jaguar customers for sure, but are they going to make a dent in Tesla’s market? Or are they just helping Tesla by further legitimizing EV? If they were ever going to seriously threaten Tesla, they had to do it years ago. With the Model 3 in full swing, the best they can hope for is to rob some market share from the Model S. It’s not going to affect the bottom line much. Tesla has moved on to bigger and better things. Tesla has been eating everyone’s lunch in the luxury car business and now that they’re finally starting to do something about it, Tesla is starting to eat everyone’s midsize sedan lunch. They’ll be doing that in every vehicle market they get into. The rest of the industry is a day late and a dollar short. The Porsche Taycan isn’t going to change that.
Not many is my guess. Much more likely is that around 20 thousand likely Porsche buyers or owners will see just how awesome fully electric cars are and take the plunge. So called Tesla killers, which only come out in 20 thousand examples a year are not Tesla killers, they are a market research and they most often are aimed at customers that would buy their brand anyway. I would even say that this publicity will increase Tesla sales because you have to realize, Porsche does not have a single supercharging station anywhere in the world. There are only 3rd party stations available, so the fast charge to 40% battery will only happen if a company that shares none of the business Porsche has, sees a benefit. Tesla stations on the other hand are awesome.
More batteries, - at least as an option. Better batteries, - their batteries are made in the same building where the cars are made and they own the company that makes the equipment that all battery makers use. Better battery management, - they actively warm or cool the batteries as needed to get the very best out of them, and the system can simultaneously warm some batteries and cool others as needed. A more efficient motor, - they designed their own and it has computers inside it. Fancier motor control software/regenerative braking, - HINT: AI software is like voodoo magic! A MUCH better drag coefficient, - HINT: It helps if the boss also owns a spaceship company with wind tunnels and stuff! They trust their customers, - which I need to say more about… The Porsche Taycan (for example) locks down the battery so you CANNOT charge it to 100% - and you CANNOT drain it down to zero. In a sense, that’s a good thing because if you charge to 100% or drain to 0% very often, you’ll wreck the battery. So Porsche don’t let you do those things…,ever,. Tesla are OK with you charging to 100% and draining to zero - ,*BUT*, they warn you that if you’re stupid enough to do this ,on a regular basis, - that you’ll wreck your battery. The charging control panel shows “Regular Driving (70%)” and “Road Trip (100%)” markers so you can see. If you charge to 100% very often, a little popup appears and tells you what a bad person you are. BUT - if you actually need every watt-second of charge for a long road trip - then it’s fine with it. Tesla trust their customers to be smart about it - and if they’re not - well, it’s their own stupid fault. Porsche don’t trust their customers so they they treat you like a small kid and lock away the best toys. I know which I prefer!
It’s more fun, period. Seems like every answer here circles on what can be read online in terms of speed, weight, charging, etc… but nobody answered the actual experience. I have driven both a Tesla Model S P100D & Porsche Taycan Turbo S. (I also have a deposit for Audi’s RS GT but hasn’t delivered to test). Both are lightening. Yes, you can slightly feel Tesla’s better acceleration. Yes, everything about better charging is true. Yes, everything about price is true. But, the Taycan’s ability to corner and stop on a dime are immeasurable. Also, the confidence it instills in the driver to be able to perform hard corners and extreme application of the brakes is next level. You feel like you could be a professional race car driver. I can still feel the almost exactly 90 degree corner I took the Taycan in thinking I’d roll my personal Audi RS5/RS7 into a ditch. Words can’t describe it. The only visual is looking at those massive brake calipers. It’s the entire front half of the front wheels. Something NOBODY will mention or even know is this piece of parenting. The Taycan has a custom made car seat, made by Porsche, to fit in the back. My mind literally blew up over this. I’ve struggled to find the balance of super car, but also shuttle my daughter around & pick up groceries. It’s like the Taycan team was in my head during design. It’s been quoted, but I haven’t spent enough time to measure myself, that the Taycan can also regenerate more full accelerations off the line than the Tesla can on a single charge. We can debate pricing, charging efficiency, ability to take vacations in it, and many other advantages the Tesla has. The Plaid model might be the answer too. Their superiority in these categories are not to be taken lightly at all, but if you want a car that rivals the McLaren 720s in terms of “WOW” factor, then it’s already arrived.
If you are a potential customer for a conventional Porsche, then you might well look into the Porsche Taycan. It’s a very nice electric sports car in the Porsche tradition. If you’re used to an SUV, then probably not. One writer described the Porsche Taycan as the car you take to the mountains on a weekend.
We have close to 100k miles on our 2015 Model S 60. Maintenance has been close to nonexistent. We get about 35k miles on a set of tires, and over 3.5 years we’ve taken it in twice; once for a weird issue where the main screen would shut off (didn’t affect driving), once for a rear door handle that failed to pop out (needed replacing). I’ve had some instances of weirdness when new software is released. Very similar to when your smartphone gets a new update. Sometimes it’s a little buggy, but then an update comes out that resolves it. I chose to update the software to access new features of the car so I expect some of that that. We did blow a tire once and had a very interesting experience. Tire pressure alarm goes off, and I can see PSI decreasing quickly. I’m able to safely pull into a parking lot. There is no spare tire. I do keep a can of fix-a-flat but in this instance it didn’t help. As I’ve done my whole life I called AAA for a tow. They connect me to a tow truck driver. He asks “It’s a Tesla, right?” “Yes” I confirm. “Cancel the call with AAA, and call Tesla roadside assistance. Trust me.” So I called Tesla’s roadside assistance and they put me in touch with a tow truck driver. The same exact tow truck driver. He showed up five minutes later with a full replacement tire/wheel. Swapped it out and we’re back on the road in minutes. He dropped our flat tire off at our local Tesla service center. The service center charged me for a new tire, sent a tech out to the house the next day and put my original wheel (with new tire) on my car in my driveway. Overall it was an amazingly easy experience and I was not expecting it. The tow truck driver said Tesla has sent spare wheel/tires to all the tow trucks in their network. Now that is re-inventing the customer experience. edit 1: I forgot to add that I spent about $1400 on an electrician to add a fast charging outlet in my garage. This is about double the average cost I’ve heard. But my electrical panel is on the opposite side of the house from the garage. Any potential new owner of an electric car should take that charger cost into consideration. edit 2 (08/2019): we now have 120K miles on the Tesla. We recently had the computer (MCU) go out on the car, which was a $2,000 repair. It made it difficult, but not impossible to start the car, and no center screen. The repair took half a day. Not fun to pay that but considering this was the biggest expense we’ve had, I can deal with it. We moved into a new house recently ,due to our last house burning down, and spent $400 on an electrician to install a fast charging outlet. The electrical panel was luckily very close to where the outlet sits in the garage. edit 3 (5/2021): We sold the original Model S 60 in November, and bought a new Model S Long Range. Honestly, the car could have probably driven forever, but with young kids and 145,000 miles, the interior of any car gets beat up. I was briefly on the waiting list for the Porsche Taycan. But the secret strength of Tesla is the nationwide supercharger network. I already drove it from LA to Lake Tahoe and it was a true pleasure. One charge halfway up, one charge to top off in Tahoe, one last charge an hour from home. Positives: we like the fact we have double the range (400 miles) in our new one, it’s all wheel drive, and a lot faster. The ordering has gotten very streamlined, with most options now included. The supercharger network is really big now, and growing. They recently upgraded the charging to charge the first 50% even faster, then it starts to drop down. But it’s still way faster than any public charging network. Negatives: Tesla customer service is drastically lower than when we got our original car. The reason is obvious. They are delivering so many cars every day, you dont get the celebration we got back in 2015. If you ask them, they will take the time to go through all the features. Otherwise it’s “Your car is in spot 11. The key is inside.” Very friendly, but you can see they are selling a ton of cars. No joke, they probably handed off twenty vehicles to new owners while I was waiting to pick up ours.
