In high performance engines, is “more than 100hp per liter of displacement is hand grenade territory” a valid rule concerning reliability?
Nope. When your new hyundai’s are coming with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and 201 hp out of a 1.6L engine, you can kinda throw that rule out. Even in naturally aspirated engines the Toyota 86 is at 205 hp from 2.0L Turbo Audi TT 2.0, 220 hp. Reliability? VOLVO! S60 Polestar 360 hp from just 2 liters. Honda Civic SI 205 hp from 1.5 L. These are brand new cars from the factory, so definitely not in “Hand grenade territory” In tuned engines, it depends on how its done, an engine is only as strong as its weakest component. Some engines are over engineered and can be taken to huge heights without a lot of issues (Looking at you 2JZ and RB26), but others seem to just like exploding when you tinker if you don’t replace all the weaker spots (Volkswagen, Hyundai come to mind when I think of over boosted engines that explode). It also comes down to maintenance, I had a Toyota engine grenade on me once because of an oil leak (check your oil before a long drive folks). In short: No, reliability comes down to components, engineering and maintenance.
Is it safe to say that station wagons are less reliable than other body styles?
i don't have specific reliability data to quote, but my gut feeling is that there should be little to no decrease in reliability in a wagon versus its sedan counterpart. Most wagons sold in the US are based on a sedan platform. For example, Audi A4/Allroad, BMW 328 sedan/estate, VW Golf/Sportwagon, Volvo S60 and S90/V60 and V90, Mercedes E350/Wagon, etc. 328i Sedan 328i Wagon, pretty identical until you get to the C pillar Since these wagons share pretty much all of their drivetrain and electronic components, there SHOULD be no difference in reliability. The only thing I can think of would be issues with the hatch mechanism, but that shouldn't cause any more difficulty on average tha a hatchback or SUV/CUV hatch.
Should I buy a high mileage Volvo?
I own a 2003 Volvo S60 and the car has almost 350000 km on the clock. It is probably my 10th Volvo and all of them where high mileage when bought. It depends what model/year the car is and if it had been properly maintained. I wouldn't recommend a Volvo that wasn't properly maintained as the repairs can be pretty expensive and a Volvo specialist is also pretty hard to find. If you ask a more specific question about a model/make year I will be able to provide a specific answer regarding common issues and fixes.
Which is the most reliable European car brand in the United States out of Volvo, Volkwagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar?
Choose any of the German brands and you won't be disappointed. I've owned models from all of them and they never got me disappointed. The only tweaks are that they may be small issues after a few years of wear and tear, but the important part such as clutch, gearbox, engine, they all hold and won't disappoint you if you treat them well. Germans have a high working morale, they engineer well thought-out products. I currently own a fully loaded fiery-red Volvo S60 r-design. It looks great and runs very good. I hope that this car will turn out to be as any of the German cars I've owned before. In depth and details, nobody does better than the Germans. Trust me on that.
Who can afford brand new cars?
Well the main issue is most people can afford it - by that I mean get credit and make payments. But in reality owning a new car is a waste of money - the depreciation in years 1 through 4 is usually staggering, and couple that with credit charges on a loan/finance its head scratching why people think its makes sense. If you are rich, really rich then buying the right new car can be Ok - for example a friend of mine always buys Porsches, and because of that Porsche like to offer him a space in a queue for a new car, so he bought a 911 GT3 RS, and drove it about for a year, then sold it for £10k more than he bought it…. but you need the £100k plus to even afford to buy it in the first place! Another example of how good motoring can be very cheap is another friend; he bought a 2003 model Volvo S60, and drove it sensibly for 6 years, got it serviced cheaply at an independant garage and did what it required to get through the MOT, he did 183k miles in it before it died and was non economic to repair - but he had saved a lot of money from buying a cheap Volvo so went out and looked at a Lexus GS300, with 80k miles on the clock and a full Lexus dealer history, heated and cooled seats, sat nav, leather, reversing camera, cruise control etc, top spec, he paid the guy £4500 for it there and then. He took it to an independant Lexus dealer who said ‘its great, clean car, be careful with it and it will do 200k miles no problem….. so he has a car which is luxurious as you would want, that costs him very little to run, will probably only depreciate another 1000 or 2000 over the next 5 years and when it dies he buys the same thing but 5 years newer. Thats sensible motoring.
I’m looking to purchase a 2007 BMW 3 Series. It has 150k miles, is that too many?
The E92 generation of the 3 series was a good car. The engine has a few issues that are rarely major. I’ve seen a 3 series with almost triple the miles than the one you are looking at. That motor can go forever with proper care so I’d say go for it. I recommend looking at a Volvo S60 T6 or a Mercedes C-300 if you are open to other options.
I want to buy a used European luxury car that will be cheap to maintain. I drive about 5k miles a year. What do you recommend under $10K?
I would suggest a Saab 9-5 aero. 2006 or before with a 2.3 engine. A Volvo s60…not a twin turbo. 2004-2010 or so, a Mercedes e320 or e420 1997-2000 or a Jaguar XJ8…make sure its post 2003…if made before 2004 there were nicosil and timing chain tensioner issues.
What CPO car would be better, a 2014 BMW 3 series or a 2015 Volvo S60? Both are very similar in price and warranty.
My simple and best answer is look at what each of them cover and decide what you can afford to pay for that is not covered and pick the one that will cost the least out of pocket. Since you are not drawn to one over the other let the numbers decide for you. Check maintenance costs, known issues and check Edmunds and KBB for the cost of ownership. At one time BMW included the services but I am not sure they still do.
