What are the differences, if any, between the Toyota GT-86, FT-86, Scion FR-S, and the Subaru BR-Z?
To meet ever stricter automotive emmission and safety regulations carmakers reguarly share chassis' and engines to increase prodcution volumes lowering R&D costs per unit manufacture. The more you produce the quicker you can pay those costs off. A few examples where manufacturers have shared chassis' or engines or both: - The Toyota Aygo is also a rebadged Citroen and Peugeot - Toyota iQ is the Scion iQ in North America and also the Aston Martin Cygnet - Chrysler Crossfire is an old Merc SLK and the last 300C was an Old Merc E-Class Chassis - VW Golf chassis underpinned the Beetle, Bora, Jetta, Audi A3, TT, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon etc. - Mercedes joint venture Pentagon engines ironically appeared in Minis (owned by BMW) and they now have Peugeot/Citroen engines There are literally thousands of examples of this kind of thing and it is by no means a new phenomenon. In terms of differences betwenn the Scion/Toyota/Subaru there really are none, the Toyota/Scion is simply down to badging and the Subaru does have different panels but underneath all is the same except spec levels. Why? Toyota still has an interest in Subaru but these days both brands have a similar problem, they both produce boring cars. Every Subaru ever made has been hit with the ugly stick although engineering wise has been amazing, think any WRX STi. Subaru desperately needs to show off that amazing ability in a pretty body and hopes to do it with the BRZ. It's about time. Toyota have got form here, from the amazing looking 2000GT in the sixties to the MR2 (stands for Midship Runabout and the two is for two seater), Celica and Supra but over the last ten years has abandoned this space altogether. Hopefully the GT-86 will bring some spark back. The naming is in hommage to the Toyota Corolla Levein coupe AE86 from the eighties.
Should I buy a Ford Focus ST or a Toyota 86?
I have friends that own both cars, which means I’ve driven and experienced both. The 86 makes you feel like you’re in a sports car thanks to its height, stance and number of doors. But you could make yourself a delicious cheese and salami sandwich by the time it reaches 100 km/h. It is PAINFULLY slow. Yes, I know it is a Toyota, which makes it indestructible but unless you’re planning on turbocharging it, the 86 won't bring you any joy. The Ford Focus ST on the other hand, man, what a car! Great bucket seats, great interior design, great speakers (Sony Xplod as stock - WAY better than the pathetic stock speakers in the 86 that have 0 bass). What’s more? It looks great and once you put the pedal to the floor, you GO FAST. Faster than most cars on the road. 0–100 km/h in 6 seconds. Go for the ST. In blue.
Is the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 a good daily driver?
Actually it depends on your life. A university student around early 20’s will definitely prefer this vehicle. But if you are married and expecting or if you have children you must have another car if you want to stick with your BRZ or 86. One more thing, if you are close to or over 1.90cm tall you won't be comfortable in this vehicle.
Is the Mazda Miata a better sports car for the money when comparing it to the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86?
Miata is actually an acronym: ,M,iata ,I,s ,A,lways ,T,he ,A,nswer. I love the BRZ/GT-86. I’m just ever so slightly too tall to drive one with stock seats. Not an issue in the Miata unless someone decides to stick a hardtop on it (in which case, not an issue in the NA and NB). I find that the BRZ (at least the one I drove, modified enough to have highly non stock seating arrangement) is more in line with what I think of as “GT Car” than “sports car”. There’s too much power for the weight, and it misses - somehow - the incredibly finely poised handling of the Miata. The Miata is basically a unibody steel constructed modern replica of a Lotus Elan, which is one of the finest sports cars ever made. The Miata is arguably better for something you’d drive with any frequency. The BRZ frankly gives older BMWs a run for the money - it feels more like an E36 than anything else, frankly, but “sportier”. So maybe more like a street-version of a race prepared E36. Dunno. But not a sports car, as I reckon “sports car”
Is an 86 Toyota a Subaru?
It’s more Subaru than Toyota. Subaru FA20 engine using Toyota direct injection. The chassis is a modified Impreza chassis. The gearbox for both is sourced from Asin, simiiar To gearbox used previously in Alexa’s Altezza and Honda S2000 Toyota came up with the original concept and engaged Subaru who came to the party after a bit of resistance. Toyota also we’re reluctant to share their direct injection technology with Subaru but eventually did for the sake of the project. Like others have mentioned Sabura manufactures both the BRZ and the Toyota 86. There’s a great video on YouTube giving some insight into the development process, we’ll worth watching if you’re into these cars. Why does Subaru BRZ, Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S look completely the same?
Why do they look the same? Because they're ,the same. Basically, the engine, which is a boxer (flat four) is built by Subaru, while the rest of the car (body, interior, etc.) comes from Toyota. As for the Scion FR-S, it was simply the USDM version of the Toyota model (Scion was a Toyota brand only available in the US and Canada, from 2003 to 2016), before Scion disappeared in 2016 and before the Toyota 86. The only different thing between the Toyota 86/GT86 and the Scion FR-S is basically the badges, the small differences for each market as for safety and regulations, the position of the steering wheel and the units (metric for continental Europe, Japan and Canada, imperial for UK and USA). Now, between the 86/GT86 and the BRZ, there are slight differences, with the BRZ being a bit more heavy and having slightly harder supensions than the 86/GT86, but not much else. It's the same car.
What is the better car: Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ?
There’s quite a few differences, albeit slight. Here’s a sampling: The BRZ has better fuel economy. Only 1–2 mpg HWY, but there it is. The BRZ costs less. J.D. Power Predicted Reliability is much higher for the Toyota 86: 4 vs. 2.5 out of 5. That’s big. The 86 has a larger touchscreen. Again, some care, some don’t. The BRZ comes standard with Brembo brakes. It’s an option for the Toyota.
Is the Toyota 86 base model worth it?
To someone I am sure it is, sure. Is it to you? It’s not to me. To each his/her own.

Toyota is considering releasing a KERS aided version of the FR-S. KERS stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System and is used in F1 and other racing series. It takes braking energy and stores it either electrically or in a flywheel and releases it by either gearing it out of the flywheel into the transmission or through an electric motor when acceleration is needed (launching and passing).
