Here’s the OP. The “person” I mentioned is the “anonymous” (as least as for now). He/she initially answered without going anonymous, but then changed his/her mind. Also I don’t really understand why this person disabled the comment function. Okay, let me start. First, this person seemingly does not know exactly how a “model” is different from a “trim level”. Let me start with the vehicles this person claims to drive. A Range Rover is a model, and it has several trims: base (just called Range Rover), HSE, Supercharged, Autobiography, etc. A Range Rover Sport is another model (bearing the “Range Rover” part and the overall styling), and has its own trims. A Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is a model, and its trims include GLE 350, and those unavailable in the US, such as GLE 350d. ,Note that different manufacturers use different terms here: some call a trim level a model or a “body style”, call a model a car, vehicle, class, series, line, or whatever. The point here is that ,make-model-trim, is the sequence of the hierarchy. Please don’t focus on the choice of word. Now let’s look at Land Cruiser. First I don’t know how this person came up with “Land Cruiser Premium”. He/she claims he/she uses internet information, but in his link there doesn’t exist the word “premium” at all. Anyway. The Australian Land Cruiser 200 has a “200” in its name because Land Cruiser 70, which is a totally different animal, is also available in Australia. ,The Land Cruiser 200 in Australia and the Land Cruiser in the US, (“premium”, as this person calls it) ,are one model but just different trim levels,, or more specifically, engine options: the Australian Land Cruiser 200 comes with a 4.6 gasoline engine, while the American Land Cruiser comes with a 5.7, each of which is exclusive to its market. If it was a decade ago, they would be named 4600 and 5700, respectively, in some markets, just like BMW 528i and 550i. Of course, the Australian one is RHD. But Lexus GX and LX are completely two different models,, just like BMW 5-Series and 7-Series. Now, this person says Land Cruiser 200 is the same as a Lexus GX, but Land Cruiser is the same as a Lexus LX. This is essentially like saying that a Chevy Tahoe LT is the same as a GMC Yukon, and that a Chevy Tahoe LTZ is the same as a GMC Yukon XL, or Nissan Armada in the US is the same as Infinity QX 80, while that in Saudi Arabia is the same as Infinity QX 70. Trim A of model X is the same as model Y, while Trim B of the same model X is the same as model Z? This is ludicrous. Then, this person claims that the Australian Land Cruiser 200 is the same as the GX 460 because they share the same engine and some other parts. Well. A while ago a Mercedes-Benz ML 500/550 and a GL 500/550 used the same 4.7 M278 engine (that on ML was a reduced-power variant) and share almost the same “chassis”. They even have the same ,Baureihe, at Daimler: they are both 166, ML/GLE being W166 and GL/GLS being X166. So are Mercedes-Benz M/GLE and GL/GLS the same model? Or will you say Mercedes sells GLE as GLS? Nobody says so. It is such a common practice to place one engine in multiple models. This does not make two models the same. I admit, that Land Cruiser / LX and Land Cruiser Prado / GX share some mechanical parts. But that ends there. Oh, I almost forgot that Land Cruiser / LX both have 5-stud wheel hubs, while Prado / GX both have 6-stud wheel hubs. Why Land Cruiser and LX are the same car? A decade ago, the J100 Land Cruiser and the J100 LX (oops, they were both called J100! That must be a coincidence!) share ,exactly the same exterior dimension, and a lot of their ,body ,parts are interchangeable (interchangeable engine and electrical parts are not surprising). Similarly, the J120 Land Cruiser Prado and the J120 GX share many ,body, parts, but their dimensions are slightly different, as optional equipment varies. As Toyota releases the current generation of all four, in order to make Lexus really stands out as a luxury brand, the Toyota-branded cousins share a lot fewer parts with the more upscale Lexus cousins, and accordingly, their dimensions are no longer the same. But still, you can see Land Cruiser’s dimensions are very close to those of the LX, while the Prado’s dimensions are very close to those of the GX; however, the Land Cruiser is about 100mm/4 in. longer than the Prado, while LX is also about 100mm/4 in. longer than the GX. What a coincidence… From an engineering point of view, one of the biggest advantages of badge-engineered cars is ,the interchangeability of body parts,. In the press shop, the dies do not have to discriminate; in the body shop, the fixtures and jigs do not have to discriminate. Often you are essentially building the exactly same body-in-white for two models of two brands, but you can’t tell until the painted body enters the assembly shop. That’s why badge-engineered cars almost always have the same waistlines and A/B/C pillars, sometimes even fenders, hoods and trunk lids. I can’t believe I wrote this much on such an obvious question… Anyway. What I believe is that all people familiar with Toyota and Lexus will tell you that: Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX are a badge-engineered twin; and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado / Life and Lexus GX are a badge-engineered twin; and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado / Life and Toyota 4Runner share something, but they are far away from a real badge-engineered twin. (Maybe not too much today, because the more unique a Lexus looks, the bigger its price tag can be.) So, Toyota doesn’t sell Prado as 4Runner in Canada; it sells Prado as Lexus GX; 4Runner may be a substitute of Prado, though; Toyota don’t sell Land Cruiser 200 as GX 460; Land Cruiser 200 in Australia is just the RHD-version Land Cruiser in the US with a smaller engine along with some equipment variations, or, is just the RHD-version Lexus LX 570 with a smaller engine and luxuries removed. Period. P.S. Some links ARE dead. But don’t worry. Official website is not the only place I can get information. Screenshot: Also, unlike someone, I gladly accept kind comments. In addition, this anonymous person appears to try to use sarcasm, but I’m not offended at all. Of course I don’t mind this person seeing my question here.
First of all, “W” does not denote sedan. It generally denotes an “ordinary” body style. W163, W164 and W166 are M-Class, which are SUVs. W460, W461 and W463 are G-Class, which are off-road wagons. W638, W639 and W447 are Vito/V-Class, which are vans. Also, long-wheel-base sedans are designated “V”, such as V222 S-Class LWB and the Chinese-built V205 C-Class LWB and V213 E-Class LWB. “V” can also denote “a larger vehicle”, not necessary longer, especially for commercial vehicles. As for the numbers following the letters, they do have a meaning, but to decipher them completely is hardly possible unless we ask those few figures who came up with these initially. The general rule of designation is as the following: 100 - 299: Passenger cars, (as opposed to commercial vehicles) Sedans ,tend to, fall into the 200 - 299 range, but there are quite a few exceptions. 300 - 399: Trucks and buses,, mostly old models Historical examples: L-Series trucks (33x, 34x, 35x, etc.); NG 74 series trucks (38x, 39x); O 303 bus (303); T2 Gen. I (309, 310, 313). Current examples: Tourismo Gen. II (350). 400 - 499: Off-road vehicles, Examples: G wagon and G-Class (460, 461, 462 and 463); current Unimog (437). Exceptions: Smart models (45x); current Vito/V-Class (447). 500 - 599: Buses and coaches, Examples: Citaro (O 530); Travego (O 580). 600 - 699: General commercial vehicles, mostly old models, Examples: Old V-Class and Vito (638 and 639); Sprinter’s predecessor T1 (60x, 61x) and Vario’s predecessor T2 (66x); NG 80 series trucks (61x, 62x). 900 - 999: General commercial vehicles, Examples: Sprinter Gen. I (901 - 905); Sprinter Gen. II (906); Actros MP4 and Antos (963). The last two digits of the numbers usually do not carry a meaning, but sometimes for commercial vehicles they are relevant to the vehicle’s size or weight, especially for old models when one lineup (say, Sprinter Gen. I) occupies a series of model numbers. In the Sprinter Gen. I case, from 1998, those with sales designation 2xx (such as 208 CDI) are W902; those with 4xx are W904. For passenger cars, you ,probably, can tell the generation of the model, but that is very questionable and unreliable. For M- or GLE-Class, where Gen. I is W163, Gen. II is W164 and the current Gen. III is W166, the number increases as new generations roll out. Similar applies to GL- or GLS-Class where Gen. I is X164 and Gen. II is X166. However, it is not true for CLS-Class where Gen. I is 209 and Gen. II is 208. How about 207? That was the E-Coupe with the 204 C-Class underpinning. And of course we have no idea why the succeeding generation of 140 S-Class became 220. Information source: Daimler AG internal training materials I received while I was an intern; I updated it since I got it many years ago.
Not by a longshot. Dodge is selling right now: the Charger/Challenger (platform mate with the Chrysler 300), the Grand Caravan minivan (Chrysler has the new Pacifica minivan on a new platform, the Grand Caravan is on the carryover platform), the Journey crossover, and the Durango SUV (shared platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee). The Charger/Challenger/300 are on a platform that has roots in the W211 chassis Mercedes-Benz E-Class of 2003–2009. They just keep throwing more boost at it for Hellcat and Demon editions to make more power, but the underlying car is a 3-generation-old Mercedes. Aside from some styling refreshening, the cars are essentially the same underneath as the 300/Magnum that debuted in 2005. The Grand Caravan is on the RT platform that debuted in 2007. The new Chrysler Pacifica is on a new RU platform, but the Grand Caravan soldiers on using the decade-plus platform. The Journey debuted in 2009, based on the former Avenger/Sebring/200 platform that debuted in 2007, itself a platform that was developed by Mitsubishi and also used for the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass/Patriot. So it’s basically a decade old. The current Durango debuted in 2011. Shared platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was developed during the DaimlerChrysler years (ending in 2006), and is common with the W166 chassis Mercedes-Benz ML-(now GLE-)Class, though by the time the vehicles debuted 5 years after the split, the number of common parts are largely limited to nuts and bolts. So… Innovative? Not so much. Their newest vehicle platform is the Durango which debuted 7 years ago after a 5-year gestation. On the engine front, aside from the Pentastar V6 that debuted in 2010, they’re heavily reliant on the 4th-gen Hemi that debuted way back in 2003. The only new platforms in the last couple of years have gone to other FCA brands, not Dodge. Note here I’m not talking about the new 2019 Ram pickup truck because FCA split them off into their own brand a few years ago, and the word “Dodge” no longer appears anywhere on the truck. That said, the 2019 Ram 1500 on the DT platform is an evolution of the previous DS platform that debuted in 2009.
It is in the Consumer Reports for 2019. 329,000 members responded on car relaibility. J D Power say they measure the level of defects, malfunctions and design flaws experienced by vehicle owners. Unfortunately only 3 out of 5. J D Power did not list what those defects, malfunctions or design flaws were. The question is how long will it last in miles? I have 5 Jeeps, the youngest is a 1995 Cheroker 4.0 Limited. It has rust in the floor, rips in the seats, the overhead console does not work, the aerial has disappeared and it has many scratches and defects in the paint but it has been maintained enough that the engine still runs and it drives pretty well. Mileage may be 120,000, hard to say as I have only had it 12 years. And those are tough miles of poor roads and heat. The original Grand Cherokee was launched in 1992 to replace the Grand Wagoneer and the XJ Cherokee. However the reaction was warm only, the Cherokee was a good package at a good price and kept on selling for another 10 years. The Grand is now on its 5th gen but the 2019 is the 4th gen WK2. It has a steel unibody, four wheel independent suspension for the first time, and a platform developed as the Mercedes Benz W166 platform. The platform is also used for Mercedes GLE class, ML Class. Basically all big SUVs. Various 4x4 systems were offerred and Qadra Lift 2 air suspension was optional. Engines were 3.6 l pentastar, 5.7 l hemi and 3l turbodiesel. A 6.2 l hemi in the SRT8 and 6.4l Hemi in the Trackhawk followed. All available in 2019. None of these engines were put in Mercedes versions, the diesel is a VM Motori and Fiat creation. At least not as gutless as the 2.5 VM Motori lump put at one time in Jeeps. Transmissions are 8 speed. So what can go wrong? Well, if you maintain it properly and replace broken parts as needed the first major component which would make it scrap would be the engine or the transmission. All the other parts are proven and heavy and well built, the elecyrical geegaws may stop working but you will not scrap a car for that. The Hemi has a great name and is a pushrod V8 in the American tradition. It has up around 320hp. It aslo has known issues with engine tick, exhaust manifold bolts, multi displacement system and misfires. A lot of this may be due to the MDS system but the roller lifters are known to suffer from lack of oil. Heavy bills ensue. The Pentastar is comparatively more reliable. Again the roller lifters can start to tick due to oil but this one also has problems with thermostat housings and water pumps. Nothing that will kill the Jeep if attended to. The diesel is a development of a well known European diesel used widely in vans and luxury cars. It does have problems, many report software issues and cats failing. The transmissions are reliable but the isolators, the rubber bits, can wear on V8 models. Fixable. The engines should last 300,000 miles with regular serviciing and at 300,000 the rest of it will be so worn and the value so low that I cannot see it heading anywhere but the scrapyard. In terms of years, if you look after it the heavy nature shoukd allow 15 to 20 years. Not as good as the XJ Cherokee but this is a much more complex vehicle.
