Why can’t a more fuel efficient motor be made?

I assume you are talking about gasoline powered engine. I have good news, It has been made in 2018 by Toyota - Their 2 liter Dynamic Force Engine. Many of the bennefits of this engine have been used in later model Toyotas. Problem with ICE engines is that most energy generated by combustion is lost as heat to the surroundings. Most ICE engine average only 20% thermally efficient. The Toyota Dynamic Force engine is 40% efficient in normal ICE mode and 41% in hybrid due to polishing of all moving parts to reduce friction with narrow grooves cross cut in it to improve scuff resistance. It has a high efficiency intake port, high power coil and multi-hole direct injector - a new version of Toyota’s D-4S direct injection system already used on the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ. A new synthetic oil is also used - 0W16 that improve fuel usage by 2%. That new engine also has higher torque and begins generating it at a lower and useful engine RPM. VVT and cam phrasing was also used similar to the latest models as well.

How do I add power to my Subaru BRZ without adding forced induction?

Only things you can do is to add a cold air intake, a decent exhaust system and a ECU remap otherwise known as a tune. This is about all you can do bar adding some form of induction. Mind you on the BRZ these gains will be fairly mininal considering the money spent. They are a great little car but power is really not there thing.

Do the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 have the same engines?

Yes, there are 100% the same engines. Factory code is FA 20 an they are made (I think) at Fuji Heavy Industries Factory in Japan. The same angine is also in SCION FRS. This engine is Sybaru body with advanced Toyota's dual injection system. It has 8 injectors - 4 direct and 4 indirect. After facelift in 2017 - you can find some visual and minor technical differencies betwien manual and auto. Manual has red painted intake mainfold without any cover. Automatic - old black plastick with small plastic cover. Manuel has now 205 hp, Automatic - still 200. But anyway - regardless of brand - engine in engine bay is the same, no matter it is BRZ or GT86.

How much can you improve horse power on a Subaru BRZ without fitting a turbo and how?

The days of big HP gains on the cheap are over. In the name of cost savings, efficiency, and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE), most of the old school hot rod techniques are not really useful anymore. Things like the air intake, a performance chip, and a full exhaust system are really all you can do without adding forced induction or major internal engine work. Those things are already decently designed from the factory these days however, so you might see a 5 or 10 HP increase, and the cost/benefit ratio getting it is terrible. You’ll also have a noisy car with worse gas mileage, and lowered value when you go to sell it.

Which is better, an 800cc engine or a 1000cc engine?

It is not a clear cut answer, and the only way to give an A is better than B answer is to know what 2 engines you are specifically comparing. Comparing only cylinder volume paints a very incomplete picture. For example the 2.5L V6 of an old Mazda MX-6 only had 164HP while the 2.0L engine in the subaru brz/toyota 86 has 205HP. Thus size is not the only measurement of output ability. The cc (Cubic Centimeters) is a measurement of volume. Meaning the combined volume (all cylinders added together) of the space inside the cyinder that the piston moves up/down. So area of piston head multiplied by stoke distance of piston multiplied by number of cylinders. The only thing this number actually determines is the quantity of air the engine CAN hold. What the engine actually outputs is a combination of many variables including compression ratio, intake/exhaust valve size, intake/exhaust valve duration, intake/exhaust system as whole, fuel delivery, cooling ability, to even the thickness and material used for the engine block and cylinder head, plus many other variables. Different purposes will require a very different change in these variables. Is this an 800cc engine for a genrator, an ATV that needs low end torque, a crotch rocket bike that needs high rpm/high horsepower? These 3 engines (even if using the exact same bottom half) will perform much differently due to the change in variables for their intended purpose. The engines that span decades are the ones that had great engineering and was able to find a good sweet spot for those variables. As time goes on though, new demands and new technology makes that engine obsolete. Many of the older “bulletproof” engines where made out of cast iron, this is heavier and more difficult to cool and thus have been replaced by aluminum alloy ones that are less durable but can reach higher RPMs and weigh less. The Toyota 2JZ, Mitsubishi 4G63 and Nissan RB26 are all cast iron engines from the 90s that were eventually replaced with aluminum versions. Variable valve timing and direct port injection are some technologies that also caused new generations in engine design.

Mike and Jerry did a wonderful job of explaining their answer. In real world the answer has to be C. The latest and the most efficient ICE engine - Toyota’s Dynamic Force Engine debuted a couple years ago and used by Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ has an efficiency of 41%. A lot of the tech that went into that engine other than high efficiency intake ports and multi-hole direct injectors are the polishing on friction surface to a mirror finish and used 0W16 syntheic oil to further reduce friction. In real world nature always work against us. Cars have friction of every type to reduce the overall efficiency. Friction from road surface and running gears, air dynamic of the vehicle, load considerations, weather conditions and even tire designs will impact the final outcome when it comes to efficiency. Since IC engines are approaching its design limits, it is time to consider electric vehicles.

Is Scion TC a really good car?

Past owner of a 2008 Scion tC (actually belonged to my wife) considered 1st generation, still own a 2008 Scion Xb. Both cars were great, powered by the same bulletproof 2.4L engine that used to be found in the Camry. Later years of the tC had the 2.5L engine that got better gas mileage and made more power. Wife’s tC handled and braked well (although not as well as her current Subaru BRZ), had a very good sound system with a subwoofer, and came loaded with features, including a sunroof, that other cars did not have. It was peppy - never felt a loss for power despite the 2.4L and 4 speed automatic. (I believe 2nd and 2.5 gen models came with a 6 speed automatic). Both cars were designed and delivered loaded with customization done at the dealer. Toyota supported them with TRD replacement parts including performance exhaust, suspension, wheels, brakes, and engine accessories including a cold air intake and a now-discontinued supercharger kit. You’ll still find aftermarket offerings for all these issues if you want to take the car racing or improve the street performance. Disadvantages were road noise. Bridgestone tires are noisy; the replacement Falken’s she purchased were much worse after they got a little wear on them. Go with Michelin or Continental all season tires.The big window in the rear hatch was disadvantage (as with any hatchback) because in Arizona it admits a lot of sun and heat into the car. Tinting it helped that issue. The instruments, that essentially sit at the bottom of a tunnel in the dash, were hard to read when the lights weren’t on. I recommend the 1st gen tC and 2nd gen Xb without hesitation. Wife had 70k on her tC when she got rid of it 4 years ago for the Subaru BRZ. I still have my xB with 145k miles on it and still going strong. I’ve had to put very little into the car other than maintainence items.

I already have a WRX and I have it pushing a solid 320hp. Now, I want an affordable car with great handling because I really miss my little Mr2. would the BRZ be the correct choice right?

Depends on what you call affordable, your noise tolerance, and your physical size. I own a 2013 Limited (my wife's car) that has the Edelbrock supercharger kit on it. It is powerful. Edelbrock claims 240hp at the rear wheels with stage 1 tuning vs the factory 205hp at the crank. The supercharger eliminates the BRZ’s notorious midband torque curve drop and it has quite the moveout/punch from about 25MPH up (doesn’t do as much off the line because the boost is limited to prevent knock). The car is best handling I have driven—neutral, no body lean, goes directly where you point it with neutral steering and it brakes very well with the firmest feeling pedal of any car I’ve ever driven (with factory brakes, not the Brembo package available as an option). We have it equipped with aftermarket 18 inch wheels and Michelin P4 summer tires. So it’s a joy to drive. Except for one thing. Road noise. Despite putting luxury touches like alcanterra leather seats, heated seats, individual (front seat occupant) climate controlled A/C, Subaru/Toyota chose to put little sound deadening in the car (and this still applies to the 2017 models we drove with factory tires before buying the used 2013). On smooth surfaces, like the rubberized pavement used on some sections of AZ freeways, it’s reasonably quiet. However on most other surfaces it’s pretty noisy and on coarse pavement you can forget hearing the very good stereo (8 drivers) or carrying on a conversation in the car. I’ve checked. There is no sound deadening/controlling materials in the fenders, quarter panels, and only a small patch in the trunk (spare tire well). So my next project with the car is going to be adding sound control to the quarter panels, rear wheel wells, under the rear seats, the doors and probably adding a Second Skin undercoating mix under part of the cabin (instead of ripping out the interior to apply it inside). It’s also a PITA for me to get in and out of the car. While I’m slightly below average height (under 5′10″) I’m tall from the hips up. I am very broadshouldered. I pretty much have to bend over double to get in the drivers seat and under the roofline. With the seat in the lowest position my head is only an inch from the interior roof. And if the door is open all the way I have to duck and bender to reach out and grab the door handle to close the door. If you are bigger, you may not fit. I suppose that’s to be expected but I have not had that egress problem with other sporty cars (although believe it or not I have similar issues with my Dad’s 2007 Merc Marquis and a rented Audi Q40 recently). I am able to get in and out of the 2017/18 WRX without issue. I will note comparing 2017 BRZ to 2017 WRX, the WRX also feels much quicker and much more powerful than the stock BRZ (as the WRX has a 2.5L turbocharged engine), rides a bit smoother, and is noticeably quieter, especially on rough road surfaces). It does not, however, feel as tight as the BRZ or handles as well (WRX is also 4 wheel drive, front bias while the BRZ is rear wheel drive only). The turbo 2.0L Impreza is also noticeably faster than the BRZ. In our car, the supercharger is an equalizer especially once the car is rolling. (BTW, the Edelbrock kit cost $5k plus installation. It’s a slick kit and doesn’t require engine (other than intake), fuel system, exhaust, or oiling mods. It’s entirely self contained with it’s own oiling system and the factory injectors have enough extra capability to accommodate the additional fuel flow.) If you want automatic, the BRZ has 6 gears instead of the Subaru CVT automatic and may last longer. BRZ is also RWD, not 4WD like other Subarus. Since the BRZ is twins with the Scion FRS/Toyota 86, you can get Toyota parts for it as well as Subaru. For instance. subaru doesn't offer splash guards for the wheel wells. I got ones for the Scion FRS from the Toyota dealer and installed them on the BRZ (they have no brand markings). Other parts interchange as well. I feel much of the car is Toyota engineered with Subaru engine and other parts (such as the transmission, which isn’t bad). I would expect other TRD parts to work one the Subaru as well. If Toyota would allow the Subaru 2.0L turbocharged engine in the BRZ/86 twins, and install a little sound deadening, the car would be just about unbeatable (except for my entry/exit problem I’ve already noted). New BRZ’s start about $24k. So with that commentary, make your own decision about whether a BRZ would satisfy your MR2 memories and pricing.
