Your car’s cooling system is a closed loop system…so if your car is losing coolant, then there’s a leak *somewhere*. There are a number of possibilities from a leaking hose to a cracked block. You can check your car’s engine oil for signs of foaming or a milky color indicative of a cracked block or you can use a coolant dye marker kit along with a UV light to spot leaks. You can also do a pressure test of your cooling system to see if there’s a leak in there as well.
That is what your coolant reservoir is for, to hold the excess coolant that won’t fit in the system after everything warms up nicely. Oh, yes, water, or pretty much anything anything else, expands when heated.
What do I have to check in my Toyota Camry 1996 LE if the engine light is on? The radiator overheated dry, the cap was half open when I noticed. I let it cool down and filled it up with the coolant and fan doesn't work. For MORE than a decade, when the ‘engine light’ comes on, you need to read the codes…. So go get the codes read already.
HISTORY TIME Warning: Long Answer, But Lots of pictures. Back in the olden days of the early 1960s when gas was around $0.35/gallon, almost every car on the road was American -- they were huge, with giant engines and guzzled gas like there was no tomorrow. ^picture: 1960 Chevrolet Bel-Air MEANWHILE Japan was just coming out of its post-war reconstruction and was producing cars again for the first time since the start of the war. During this time the Japanese were cash strapped and didn’t have a lot of resources to work with; as a result, Japanese companies -- one of which became what we know today as Toyota -- focused on making small, economical cars that the impoverished Japanese could afford and rely on. These things were spartan compared to American cars, BUT they were ridiculously cheap. This here is the Toyopet Crown, one of the very first cars Toyota imported to the United States. It was tiny compared to any American car of the time, but it was cheap, economical and costs next to nothing to run. Nevertheless ,NOBODY BOUGHT ONE. ,Japanese cars garnered the same reaction in the 50s and 60s as Korean cars did in the late 90s and early 00s. People made fun of them, and to be fair it wasn’t without merit: this thing had a puny 40HP engine which may be fine in the slow, narrow, roads of Japan where speeds rarely went over 30 MPH , but on America’s newly built interstate highways where drivers would cruise at 70–80MPH for hours on end this thing just overheated and broke down. THEN THE GREAT GAS CRUNCH of ‘73 AND EMISSIONS STANDARDS HAPPEN. Suddenly, oil was no longer free and people found themselves unable to pay for their gas-guzzling Buick LeSabres that got six miles to the gallon that wouldn’t last 100,000 miles before it had to be written off. It didn’t help that around the same time, a recession took hold, meaning even fewer people could afford to buy and run a giant American land-yacht. MEANWHILE IN JAPAN Toyota realized that if they were going to be taken seriously by the American consumer, then they had some serious work to do. During this time, Toyota would start company policies wherein they would: base all their management decisions on long-term effects even at the expense of short-term profits Use only very heavily tried and tested technology encourage continuous improvement on all levels and encourage even the lowest employee to stop all production if they suspect a defect in even the smallest details in order to ensure quality: This became known as Kaizen, something automakers all over the world and businesses study and hope to emulate. All these internal and external improvements became the foundation for what is now known as the Toyota Way, , which in turn had allowed Toyota to produce some absolute legends in the automotive world Cars like: The Celica The Corolla The Land Cruiser The Corona (eventually replaced by the Camry) MEANWHILE IN DETROIT The gas crunch and Clean Air Act had absolutely devasted the Ameican automakers; suddenly those 8L V8s were illegal to make and sell, and instead of developing better high-efficiency engines from the ground up, Detroit decided that it will be cheaper to just choke their engines to meet the new standards, resulting in absolutely ,pathetic ,specific outputs. Cadillac Eldorado: 8.0L engine, 235 HP. How do you even get so little HP for an 8L V8? It’s pathetic. At the same time, the Big Three, with a special mention for GM, were just re-badging cars left and right without any shame, sacrificing quality for short term profits, and cheaping out on critical parts to save a couple of bucks. In this era, American cars lost all semblance of high quality design, control, and were plagued with ever worse reliability issues. This all culminated in cars like this by the late 80s: The Cadillac Cimarron. The symbol of the era when American Autos were at their lowest. Suddenly, Americans started to notice that their neighbor’s Toyota Camry and Corolla were still running like new after 200,000 miles while they only got 100,000 miles at most out of their GM/FORD/Chrysler product before they failed catastrophically. Slowly, Toyota car sales started to catch up with the American automakers as their reputation thanks to their focus on quality and long term perceptions over quarterly profits started to pay off in the form of sales. And that is how Toyota became America’s car, they did it by: building up staying committed to maintain a reputation for quality and reliability over a long period of time. Sacrificing short term profits to maintain their core brand perception for high quality Creating an ultra-efficient management system that placed quality control over all other aspects. And getting lucky thanks to GM/Ford/Chrysler’s bad strategies of sacrificing long term quality for quarterly profits, which lead to the inevitable deterioration of their brand perceptions. I am a Honda fan, when I was younger from late 90s to early 2000s , Honda's were the only cars that could take my driving habits, owned a BMW 320I in 1992 and the top cylinder would always burn if I drove it up to 160KM/PH on a journey I later learnt that when you import such cars to the tropics you need to upgrade the radiator to a double cell one. On the other hand I usually take my 86 model Honda accord to 185Km/PH no stress , no overheating, fast forward to year 2000 I had my prelude I think 90 something model, no stress taking it to 180 km/PH for a 2 hour journey, the first time I tried driving the same way with a Camry the engine exploded and it had a hole at least 5 inches in diameter in the block engine. Since then I have stuck to Honda accords. They take a lot of punishment loyally. Fast forward to 2013 I got an accord like the image (from google ) and it's a wonderful car still serving me 7 years on an over 150k miles, the problems are predictable after 6 years had to change the drive shaft, fan belts and just few bits that break over time.
Well..my son and I aren’t most people. My last repair a 2007 Toyota Camry. I bought the car a few months ago and with in weeks the head gasket blew. All blogs on-line pointed to a new engine. I will admit it was a very intimidating problem. The car overheated, the oil looked like shit. I started reading about the 2.4 engine in the Camry and found a world of problems with the 2007-2009 models. It seems the engine was flawed and Toyota was replacing these engines for a decade. The issue was the head bolt threads on the engine block are aluminum and would strip. The fix was to replace the engine or buy a very expense kit to drill and replace the head bolt threads with steel inserts. That is exactly what I did. I bought the tool (Time-Sert) for $500. It is basically a helicoil kit. I took the whole engine apart down to the short block. I bought a new water pump, radiator, timing chain kit, gasket set, hoses, coil packs, brakes\rotors, trans fluid and such. It was fairly cheap mind you. Parts for a Camry are rather cheap. Basically after the engine was apart we had to drill and tap\insert 10 new threads in the engine block. I will admit we had a blast. I ended up selling the tool on E-bay when the job was complete. The total bill was about $750 for parts and tool. The car runs great. It is the little things in life... I am lucky to have a smart son. He is 18 yrs old and graduates in 9 months with a dual engineering degree Electrical\Computer. He did all the big brain stuff and I did all the grunt work. He pulled his first VW engine at 13 yrs old. At 15 yrs old I let him fix my 2004 chevy truck. It needed a new camshaft. At 16 yrs old he swapped a LQ4 6.0 in our 1978 Camaro. Maintaining cars is our hobby. I guess the point to this wordy post is don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Q: What could be the consequence when the radiator of a Toyota Camry is filled with only water and no coolant? A: Potentially overheating, freezing, cracked engine block, corrosion…………
I can only speak on earlier models of those three manufacturers. Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have I4s and V6s while Subaru has a Boxer 4 engine. Accord and Camry have stella records for reliability. The earlier models of Subaru with timing belts have had problems with overheating and oil leaks. We did a lot of repair on those models but since the new models debuted in 2014, we rarely do much repairs on those as their engine timing chain cover is held on by 22 bolts thus addressing the major cause of oil leaks. I would say without reservation that all three vehicles have evolved and stood the test of time. It will be a toss up between those cars as far as reliability as long as they are properly cared for.
Ethanol is not gasoline. The owners manual that comes with every new car (you can get it from the dealer, if not) specifies what alternative fuels a car can support: whether it is E85, a blend, regular or premium unleaded. Image: Toyota Camry gas cap Ethanol burns with more heat than gasoline, furthermore it raises the octane number, so it burns cleaner and with less partial combustion (engine "knock".) However, if the engine is not designed for ethanol, it will increase both the temperature of the engine leading to overheating and lubricant failure, and because ethanol carries water, it will increase corrosion and rust. Another drawback is the gasket material in your engine, which may not be able to withstand polar solvents like water, ethanol, or methanol. If the gasket swells or shrinks due to the effect of the solvent, you could begin burning oil and emitting white smoke. Normally, if a vehicle can support ethanol, you will see the "E85" logo somewhere on the vehicle. If it is not present, you might be able to get away with it, or with regular unleaded to dilute the ethanol. But, unless you know what you are doing and or like replacing the engine on your car, you will stick with the type of gas printed on the gas cap.
If it’s overheating with no thermostat in it, then you have another problem. it’s not the thermostat or lack thereof . YOu do need a thermostat to get the best gas mileage and heat in the winter time but let’s look at your overheating problem first. When does it overheat? While driving down the freeway or sitting in traffic? If it does while sitting in traffic, it’s likely your radiator fan isn’t working. That coudl be due to the fan itself or the sensor which controls it. If it’s overheating while driving down the freeway, your waterpump could be faulty. Your best bet is to find a shop that knows what they’re doing and have them actually diagnose the overheating issue. The shop that told you to put the the Tstat back in doesn’t know what they’re doing.
