Why does a turbocharger require an intercooler while a supercharger does not?

In truth, neither turbocharging nor supercharging ,require, an “intercooler,” which is properly named a “charge air cooler.” Forced induction systems of all types can run without cooling the air charge, but doing so reduces the efficacy of the system. Forced induction, regardless of whether belt-driven (supercharger) or exhaust-gas-impeller-driven (turbocharger) work by pushing more air into the intake manifold. More air means more oxygen, which with additional fuel and spark mean more power (remember kids, suck, squish, bang, blow!). Accelerating air heats it, and compressing it heats it even more. If you remember, heat is simply motion at the atomic level and cold is just a lack of motion, so that’s pretty easy to remember. A basic diagram of a turbocharging system Intercoolers work by running air through a radiator made of many small fins of highly heat-conductive material, usually aluminum or similar. The air charge passes through the radiator, and since the car is moving, fresh air is running across the fins on the outside, enabling heat transfer. It is ,exactly, the same thing as your radiator (and if your car is equipped with them, oil or transmission coolers), with the only notable difference being that your radiator has fluid in it and the intercooler has air in it. Intercoolers are usually placed between the compressor fan where the air is accelerated and/or compressed and the intake manifold, cooling the charge after its heated and before it goes into the cylinders. A Roots-style blower sticking out of the hood of a muscle car, with carburetors and air filter on top of it. Intercooling is less common among superchargers for one simple reason - packaging. Roots type and twin-screw type superchargers are usually mounting directly on top of the intake manifold - usually as an actual ,part, of the intake manifold - which makes placing an intercooler difficult, though it has been done before. Centrifugal superchargers and turbochargers (which differ only in the fact that where the turbocharger has an exhaust-driven impeller, the supercharger has a belt-driven gearset instead) are remotely mounted, and thus make including an intercooler in the system easy. It is a positive displacement supercharger, meaning that it compresses air inside the supercharger as well as accelerates it into the intake manifold. Note that the compressed air comes out the bottom. An air-to-water intercooler for a twin screw blower, which mounts directly to the bottom of the blower. Installed in a Subaru BRZ this SprintEX brand twin-screw intercooled supercharger barely clears the hood - notice the height of the pulley and supercharger assembly (in the very center of the photo, the large pulley with the belt going down is the supercharger drive pulley). The remote nature of turbocharging allowed the designer to move that mass away from the top of the engine bay leaving room for the strut tower brace to stiffen the chassis. Most factory superchargers are Roots-type blowers in the US. GM has used Eaton manufactured Roots blowers exclusively to my knowledge for decades, though supercharging has fallen out of favor to turbocharging, due to turbochargers being more fuel-efficient while providing more power at the price of a higher boost threshold (often mistakenly called turbo lag). In practice, most forced induction systems are limited to around 5–6psi of boost without some method of cooling the air charge. Boost is the amount of compressed air, measured in pounds per square inch in Standard measure or Bar in metric, above our normal atmospheric pressure added to the air charge. Earth’s atmosphere at sea level is 14.5psi or 1 Bar. So a system running 5 pounds of boost is pushing 19.5psi absolute, 5psi above our normal atmospheric pressure. We tend to find that pressures much above 5–6psi (.34-.4 bar) lose efficiency without a charge air cooler, where the air is expanding from being heated so much that it overwhelms the compression we’re trying to achieve. Adiabiatic efficiency map, showing air charge temperatures by color as they pass through a twin screw supercharger Few factory systems rely on anything but a traditional air-to-air intercooler (as described above, like a radiator), because the alternatives are either consumable or complex (which you can simply read as “expensive”). Aftermarket setups sometimes use water or methanol injection, which are exactly what they sound like, injecting those substances into the air charge, usually in the intake manifold, to cool the air charge through evaporation. The problem, of course, is that you run out of water or methanol and have to refill those tanks, and most people can barely be bothered to put gas in their cars and have their oil changed. You’ll also occasionally see air-to-water intercoolers, which run the compressed air charge over a heat exchanger filled with coolant to cool the air charge. These setups are more complex, and thus more expensive, because the coolant must be cooled down again after it’s heated, necessitating a pumping system to move the coolant around, check valves to ensure hot coolant isn’t recirculated before it cools down, and a second heat exchanger to dissipate the heat transferred from the air charge to the coolant. Thus ends your basic education on forced induction. Hopefully you understand the nature of forced induction and intercooling sufficiently to understand why charge air coolers are commonly used, but not required.

My dream car is the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is probably not affordable for me and for my entire life. So here we go, my dream car that I can afford: BEHOLD The Subaru BRZ (At stock) Well, this four seated sport-sedan looks pretty neat, and can obviously daily-drive. This is pretty good for a first car. It costs around $389,800 HKD which is around $50,295.8 USD. And this can go 205 KM/H, which is ok for a first-car. (Modded) And this infamous beast can be finely modded. That’s a big +1 (Credits to Google for the pics)

What make (or brand if you rather) of car has the best average safety rating for all of its models?

In my opinion it would have to be Subaru. They’re one of the few manufacturers to have at least a 5-Star NHTSA/G-rated IIHS Safety Rating throughout their fleet. With ,five, of their cars receiving the IIHS ,Top Safety Pick+, given to vehicles who excel under all circumstances. Subaru Legacy, - Top Safety Pick+ Subaru Outback, - Top Safety Pick+ Subaru Forester - ,Top Safety Pick Subaru Crostrek XV ,- Top Safety Pick+ Subaru Impreza, - Top Safety Pick+ Subaru Impreza WRX, - Top Safety Pick+ The entire Subaru line is 5-Star rated and G-rated for Good. ,The highest NHTSA and IIHS gives out respectively. What other brand can you name that has each and everyone one of their vehicles 5-starred and Top Safety Picks from a private and government agency. *Subaru BRZ omitted since platform is shared and designed by Toyota Photos from ,http://IIHS.gov, website.

Have you ever seen someone park in a handicap spot who wasn’t disabled and get ticketed by the cops?

This topic just happened to pop up on my feed. What great timing, as this exact thing happened 2 days in a row. We don’t really have cops issue tickets for this in Australia. It’s up to parking officers (who aren’t cops) or council rangers to enforce the rules and issue tickets. My wife has limited mobility, and has been issued with a pass. She usually looks for a spot elsewhere, as she says “there’s always someone worse off who needs the disabled spot.” Having this considerate attitude can have it’s downsides though, like I wrote about in story 2 here: ,Mick Parker's answer to Have you ever had someone scold you for parking in the handicapped section even though you are “handicapped”? Anyway, yesterday she needed something from the local shopping centre. They have 8 disabled spots, all grouped together, near the doors. Every spot was taken. Fortunately I found a vacant spot one row back, facing them, parked there, and waited in the car.. As far as I could tell, only 2 of the 8 cars in the disabled spots showed permits in their windscreen (required by law). I watched people come & go - noting the distinct lack of a pass on display from many of them - both those leaving, and those coming in to take those spots. I don’t judge people based on physical appearance, as disabilities come in all shapes & sizes, including well hidden ones, but when a young early 20s couple comes in - and crawl out of a lowered import sports car with no problems, then almost skip their way into the centre, and come out minutes later carrying a box of beer each, you have to question their need for disabled parking…. A “Mall Security” guy or as I like to call them a “rent-a-cop” came along while I was there. Now these security staff really don’t have the power to do much, nor are the fines usually enforceable, but I found out that because it’s private property, and they are contracted by the centre who owns the property, they do have the power to issue infringement notices on behalf of the centre, and even call up to get cars towed. He went from car to car in the disabled spots, checking carefully in each windscreen, and wrote 5 tickets. Perhaps they had a sense of self-righteousness, or just plain evil intentions, but one of the other rent-a-cops turned up to keep him company. They stood together nearby, watching people come back to their cars and get angry when they spotted the ticket. They watched (ogled would be a better word) one young woman in gym apparel come out to her car, which was parked in the disabled spot, with a pass on display. The ticket issuer sprung into action. He ran over to her car - parked directly opposite mine - and asked to see the pass. She argued a bit, but relented. I had to crack my window to listen in. The photo ID on the pass wasn’t her. She argued that because she was there buying a new phone for her disabled mother (lucky mother, getting a new iPhone 12), who was the person on the pass, that she was entitled to use the spot. She got a ticket too. I don’t think they can do anything if people don’t pay the tickets (maybe just ban them from the centre?) but it was satisfying to watch these entitled brats get tickets. Then today topped it off. My father-in-law (FIL) can’t drive anymore, and needed to go to a specialist. Normally my wife would take him and my mother-in-law (MIL), but we’re still on summer holidays, and we were out with the kids. My MIL called and asked us to meet them there, so my wife could attend the appointment with both of her parents (she’s in the medical industry). We found 2 vacant parking spots together, right outside the building the specialist was in. One standard, the other disabled. Both my in-laws have a disabled pass due to hip replacements and other issues. We parked in the normal spot, and waited for them to arrive. They went past on the other side of the road, so my wife got out so she could flag them down when they came back on the correct side of the road, and point out the vacant disabled spot. Within seconds, a young guy in a Subaru BRZ pulls into the spot. My wife is standing there, behind my car, right on the corner of that disabled spot, on crutches, with a moon boot on, and pointed at her parent’s car, now stopped behind his car. He got out, looked at her, looked at the in-law’s car (with the pass clearly on display) said just loud enough for her to hear “ah puck it” and walked off. She motioned for her parents to stay there. I was already thinking ahead as my wife came up to my window, and we agreed that our on-the-fly change of plan was for me to leave my wife there, back out of out of the spot I had, and let them take it. They could go in for the appointment while I circled the block for another spot. But within seconds, the brown bomber (parking officer) who happened to be nearby shot over, looked into the windscreen of the BRZ, and started punching his rego into the handheld machine. He raced back to his car, but too late, she was sticking the printout under the wiper. He cursed the parking officer, and she explained that it was zero tolerance, no pass, no right to park there, and fine issued. He then accused my wife of calling the parking officer over, and directed his abuse her. The parking cop shot straight back and told him if he didn’t get his car moved this second, she’d call to have it towed. She could see me getting out of my car now, and told me to stay there, and she stood guard until the asshole reversed out of the spot and drove away. She then waved the in-laws into the now vacated disabled spot, and had a quick chat to my wife. She was concerned he may come back and seek revenge, so my wife told her it was OK, that I was waiting in the car, and would keep an eye out over both cars. She wished everyone a nice day before walking off. Good PR from a parking officer - a rare thing to see these days.

What was your favorite discontinued car model?

I love ,David Wayne,’s and ,Chris Coleman,’s suggestions. I know the bronco is supposed to be making a comeback, but I doubt it will retain the same feeling/spirit of the original. Too bad. The 240z would be an awesome come-back car, too. I feel like the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ and Porsche Cayman are the closest we’ve got in the USA to the old 240z. I would welcome a revival of the 240z by Nissan. The car I’ll choose is one that I have loved ever since my father told me a story about it back in the early 90’s. He was on a business trip somewhere in New England, driving from the airport to some plastics company. He told me he was driving at the speed limit (55mph), as he always did, on a long and straight country road when I corvette flew by him fast enough to make him feel like he was sitting still. After the vette passed him, he noticed a black car far behind in the rear view mirror. Then, all of a sudden, that black car had red and blue lights flashing from behind its windshield and grill. My dad told me that he thought to himself, “ah, you’ll never catch him”, and proceeded to drive. When he looked back to see the police car again, there was nothing, and then Whooosh!!! it blew by him on the left. He was impressed, but had no idea what the hell that cop was driving until a few miles down the road, he saw that the cop had caught up to and pulled the vette over. The car that the cop was driving was this: The Buick Grand National (1986 & 1987 model years). That police car had probably been modified, but these cars were very quick right from the factory, especially for that era. We’re talking Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini fast from a blacked out grand ma’s car. It wasn’t great on the twisties, but damn could it haul ass in a straight line. Several years later, I bought one. LOVED IT!!! Here are some more photos: I’d love to own another one someday.
