What is the best data storage media to keep your photo and video for the next 20 years?

You have a bunch of possible ways to kill data over a 20 year span. Let’s take a look at those. But first, a confession: I actually do back up! What I Do So I’ll start at the conclusion. My recommendation is simple: redundancy. Don’t count on anything important lasting on any single kind of media. Let’s look at what I do with my photographs (,B&W Photo of the Day,). So when I take a some photos, I pretty quickly import them to my PC from my camera’s SD card. SD cards are fine as a camera medium, but they aren’t long term. This gets dropped directly into files on my Data drive. That’s a 10TB Enterprise-grade drive, a bit longer lasting, in theory, than plain old consumer drives. Data from that drive is copied to my 24TB Drobo. Drobo is a weird proprietary RAID device, which is effectively RAID5 or RAID6, depending on how you set it up, if you put in enough drives. Either of these online drives is subject to virus attacks, power glitches, floods, EMPs, Godzilla attacks, etc. But if one drive fails (in single-redundancy mode), I can swap in a new one, and rebuild to full redundancy again in a couple of days. I also run a backup once in awhile to an external SATA disc. This one sits in a cabinet most of the time, not attached to my PC. So if anything were to go wrong with power, nefarious software attacking images, or other storage, I can restore nearly everything pretty quickly. Regularly, I run backups to BDXL M-Discs. An M-Disc is the most reliable form of consumer (CD/DVD/BD) compatible optical disc, and being BDXL, it stores 100GB each. I shot about 750GB worth of photos last year… I really need to do more culling. Since I moved to a town in which 21st Century-class internet hookups are possible (I’m on gigabit optical fiber), I also pay annually for “cloud” based backup. I use a company called Backblaze. So I typically have 5 copies of everything as an endpoint. At least two pretty much as soon as the data gets into my PC. Pre-Computer Storage Some forms of storage are pretty reliable, at least over a human lifetime or two. That doesn’t mean you don’t want this data online for computer use, but don’t entirely discount the old forms. I took this photo in 1977. This was scanned awhile ago, and I’m actually doing a project to bring all that old stuff in using better scaning technology. Old transparencies and negatives are subject to mold, dust, and fading (though this was Kodachrome 25, which holds up pretty well), but when stored properly, they can last decades. B&W negatives can last centuries if properly processed, washed, and stored. Color prints from the decades ago are almost certainly fading by now, and the paper used for printing was also an issue. But the Cibachrome I printed on back in the 1970s was rated for 25 years, but can still look pretty good today, thanks to stable dyes. The Flash Problem You can follow some of the links to learn more about flash memory, but any way you slice it, I don’t recommend it for long-term storage. USB dongles, SD cards, etc. are just dandy for photo taking, file transfer, etc. But modern high capacity flash devices are not all that reliable. And they get less so as you use them. SSDs have the same problem. In your PC, they’re actually pretty good. Unlike an HDD, there is less chance of a single point of SSD failure. So if things go bad, at least in the media rather than the control circuit, you are more likely to be able to recover most of an SSD. Like other flash, SSDs come in SLC, MLC, TLC, and even QLC technology, for 1, 2, 3, and 4 bits stored in each flash cell. The more bits per cell, the cheaper per bit the device, but also the less reliable. An active SSD is working in the background to ensure it isn’t losing data, including copying over older file system blocks to ensure they remain refreshed. But on a shelf, it won’t necessarily last any longer than SD card. One can buy SLC media, but it’s really expensive. A 128GB Swissbit SLC, rated for 10 year storage, runs around $140. A normal UHS-I U1 128GB memory card runs around $20 these days. Magnetic Storage A hard drive’s media recording is pretty reliable, and does not count on being powered on for long-term data retention. You’re like to be safe for 5 years, and possibly longer. The specific magnetic writing technology will have an effect. Supposedly, GMR (gigantic magneto-resistive) drives are stable for 10–20 years. It’s general practice in the computer industry to refresh the data on unplugged HDDs every 3 years. Some kinds of computer tape, like enterprise-class backup tape, have a pretty good 30 year reputation. Though analog 8mm videotape I shot in 1994 was full of noticable dropouts when I went to digitize it in 2007. Fortunately, the S-VHS master tape for the same film was clear as the day it was shot. The other problem with both HDDs and tape is that there’s always a mechanical component. Drive platters can get sticky and refuse to move. Controller boards can experience component failure. Lubricants can dry out. So it’s not only the storage medium itself, but the whole component that’s got to survive. Optical Storage Technologies The big advantage of optical storage has been its consumer connection. CD, DVD, and BD all began life as consumer media. And some of these can be reliable. Others… not so much. The formulations for CD-R and DVD-R have long been Low-to-High (LTH) writing technologies using organic dyes. The disc starts out with low reflectance everywhere but the index pits. During writing, the writer’s laser is zapping pits, changing the low reflectance to high. That writing won’t be reversed. But over time, random low reflectance areas have changed to highs by the fading of the dye, possibly accelerated by sunlight. You can pretty much count on a CD-R or DVD-R lasting 3–5 years. And sure, some stored under ideal conditions made in the 1990s are still. Others have certainly died. Blu-ray initially solved this dye stability problem by not using organic dyes. A BD-R is made by sputtering very a thin later of copper alloy and then silicon. This layer starts out highly reflective, but when a pit is hit with a writing layers, the silicon and copper merge to a non-reflective material. This HTL technology is not subject to fading in light. Blu-ray is also pretty large, with discs at 25GB, 50GB, and more recent BDXL variation at 100GB and 128GB. And just because Blu-ray was a little too good, some nefarious villians — the folks holding the patents on organic dyes for CD and DVD — started making a LTH BD-R, which is potentially cheaper than an HTL disc. But karma works out, and so there’s also a technology called M-Disc. The M-Disc is another kind of HTL technology, in which an even higher power laser burns pits in a reflective “stone-like material” to lower the reflectance of the material. You need an M-Disc compatible BD drive to burn an M-Disc, because of the hotter laser. There are M-Disc blanks for CD and DVD, too, but again, you need a special drive for burning. The M-Disc people claim 1,000 years estimated life on an M-Disc. But hey, who cares if it’s only 250 years? It’s not just the data layers. All these discs are made of polycarbonate, which is pretty robust stuff. But CDs have their data layer under the label, literally. That label is a very thin coating of laquer. Most commerical music CDs make this layer so soft and thin, you can scratch it off with a fingernail, removing both laquer and reflective material, killing the disc. DVDs are a stack of two 1/2 thickness polycarbonate platters, with the data layer near the middle. This is a better design, since the polycarbonate is hard to scratch. However, the glue that binds the two halves together is another point of failure. BDs are similar to DVDs in their stackup, only the data later isn’t central, but much closer to the “bottom”, the side that’s being read. In fact, it’s so close (0.1mm) that the BD designers at Sony and Philips were worried about scratches taking out BDs fairly easily. The first discs using this technology, XDCAM disc for digital broadcast cameras, were permanently mounted in cartridges, like a Zip disc or floppy disc. So all BDs today have a very hard, thin material covering the polycarbonate, making it very difficult to scratch a BD. Format Rot So, the bad news is that Godzilla just stomped your house. The good news is that, just before that, I was able to back up all your data. T,he bad news is that it’s backed up on about a ton of ST-506 hard drives in the back of my Toyota Tacoma. The Lizard King got my controller… how do we restore these to a modern computer. Even if the storage works, are the drives easy to read on a modern system? That’s the idea behind ,format rot,. Can I read those old 8mm video tapes? The old Zip discs I used for backups in the early 1990s? And will those BDs or SATA drives or anything else we have today work in the future? When PCs have died and we’re computing via neural links to our phones and the internet, how to we get this data backed up onto out rod-logic systems? This is the next place that multiple copies works in your favor. At some point, you’re moving to a new storage medium. Keep your old ones, but backup to the new format, too, from some of the older stuff. This is usually a pretty easy thing… I mean, just how many 880K floppies do you think I had in 1995? Online Backup The idea behind online backup is great! Basically, I run an app on my PC which has a list of the directories I want backed up, and just magically, everything I create gets backed up to a cloud server. But there are certain potential issues here. One is simply that these guys need to make a living. So you are going to have to pay for such services on a regular basis, and perhaps more, as your data used increases. But it is comforting to know that if Godzilla stomps my house, my data will not be destroyed forever. Sure, useful only if I’m not home when he stops by. And I know what you’re thinking: why in the world would Godzilla stomp Delaware when Jersey and Pennsylvania are right there, eh? In concert with that whole making a living thing, some cloud backup services have gone under. No company, no data. They will hopefully give you a warning, but do realize that, depending on your use of the system, one or two months warning may not be enough to grab your data back, should you need to, over the net. Particularly when every other customer has the same thought. The service I use offers a physical backup delivery, via 8TB HDDs. You can order these with the data you need… the cost of the first few in a year is refunded if you return the drive. So not bad. And yeah, you need some good data bandwidth for this to work. My online archive is somewhere around 14TB. At my old house, best-case, it would have taken 5.3 years to achive that backup, rather than a few months. And not even that, because of the data caps, it really would have been more like 30,000 years. Not practical. Why is online good? Well, aside from the locale thing, it’s bcause that’s managed storage. It’s redundant, on a cloud server, but you’re also paying for maintainence on that system done, hopefully, by data center professionals. So they replace HDDs that are dying, perhaps even before they’ve actually died. They migrate to more cost effective forms of storage over time, and they don’t likely run out of room for your stuff.. as long as you pay your bills! I looked into the Toyota site that has the manual, I am assuming that your asking how to change the Navigation system display. I really doubt underneath these products, Ford, Toyota, or even Microsoft all developed their own real-time executive from scratch... since there's already a slew of really really good ones out there. The one I used for awhile was VRTX (Versatile Real Time Executive)... Now owned by Mentor Systems.... It's used to run the Hubble Space Telescope and many other satellites. There's also VxWorks, which also supports FAT file systems... I'd bet it's lurking somewhere in most cars because of this.... most modern cars seem to understand smartphone SD cards and have their own SD cards and such for on-board navigation, which is the basis of my guess. Its owned by Wind River Systems, and they are a very, very important technology company.

There were two features I disliked about my otherwise great Toyota RAV4: The digital clock would only display in the 12-hour system. The music player took several minutes scanning a USB drive of 70 gigabytes of music before it would even play, had restrictions, such as depth of directories, and was not too good at identifying pieces. So I bought the smallest tablet computer I could find, and found a place I could mount it on the dashboard without hiding anything essential. The car’s clock is hidden behind the tablet, and I downloaded various clock applications for the tablet until I found one I liked. I gave the tablet a 128 gigabyte SD card, and I similarly downloaded a couple of decent music-playing applications (They are extremely hard to find - most just give a flat list of names of movements with no clue of what piece each movement belongs to.) and played music through the car’s Bluetooth connection. Since I don’t play music all the time (generally not when I have passenger(s)), and don’t need full-time display of what I am playing, I also downloaded an application to function as a digital picture frame, with the clock display superimposed, and set up updates for the picture collection from my main PC. They change randomly 1 per minute. That was in 2013. Technology marches on, so now I prefer to play music from my phone, which has 128 gigabytes of ,native, storage, avoiding various hassles of removable storage. Similarly, the phone now does most of the other functions that I used to do on that tablet. So now that tablet resides on my dashboard (though slipping out for charge and warmth), and mainly serves as a fancy clock, but also as a fancy picture display for my passengers.

However once you find the car you like you may actually need to use a different site to purchase the car. For example, we found my wife’s Toyota Rav 4 with 8000 miles on it using Car Guru. The car was located in Texas, we live in Nevada. The service we actually purchased the car on was Vroom. Great experience they even included first year registration fees which is not common here in Nevada. Car was used but really showroom condition. Only thing is it did not have a second key and the gps SD card was missing. They covered the cost of the gps SD card but not the extra car key.
