Why did the Indian prime minister use the Mercedes-Maybach S650? Why doesn’t the government want a locally-made car? What about the Made in India initiative?
This question comprises of two sub questions. The first one deals with why Mercedes Maybach S560 for the PM. And the second deals with country of make and why a Make in India vehicle is not chosen. The first question is straight forward and I quote from the newspaper feed. “,The Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Guard provides the highest level of armoured protection available in a production car. The Maybach S 650 Guard arrives with VR10-level protection. The car can withstand bullets and can take assaults from AK-47 rifles. The car is able to protect it's occupants from a 15 kilogram TNT blast of just two meters which gets the sedan an Explosive Resistant Vehicle (ERV) 2010 rating, the car also has polycarbonate coated windows. The under-body which has been heavily armoured can protect from a direct explosion. The passenger cabin also gets a separate air supply in case of a gas attack. Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Guard is driven by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine that develops 516 bhp and about 900 Nm of peak torque. The top speed is restricted to 160 Kmph. In addition, the car is equipped with run-flat tyres, ensuring a quick getaway in case of damage or puncture. It is the Special Protection Group or the SPG that makes requests for the new vehicles to be added to the PM'S cavalcade. The SPG identifies the security requirements and takes the decision to upgrade the vehicles, the SPG acquire two identical cars and uses one as a decoy.” It needs to be noted that this is a production car and thus its value is less. Its crashworthiness is also established. A grounds up hand tooled automobile would have costed way more and the guarantees associated with a crash would not have been possible to seek. The second question is Why not a Make in India car? Simply because Make in India does not make financial sense for manufacturing one or two cars. It makes sense when the product needs to be utilised by population at large. Mercedes Benz is a name to be reckoned with in the automobile sector and its credentials w.r.t. researching and designing safe cars, systems and sub-systems is formidable. People in doubt may take out time and visit the Mercedes Benz Museum at Stuttgart, Germany to know that this company has 135 years of history in designing top grade cars and safety systems. I am giving some pictures of the Museum. These pictures form 0.001% of what is there in the Museum. What is the difference between Mercedes maybach and Mercedes brabus?
For starters Maybach is a brand owned by Mercedes. Brabus is an independent company. A Maybach is the ultra luxury version of a Mercedes S-class in essence. Brabus takes any car you give them and tunes it for high performance. They specialize in Mercedes cars though, but really any car is possible. This includes Maybach like this one This used to be a Maybach S600. Now it's a Brabus Rocket 900.
Would a fullsize car or limousine (ie Brabus Rocket 900) be a practical car in Hong Kong or Japan?
One can argue that owning any car in Hong Kong is impractical, but what ends up happening is that cars are status symbols, so people own big impractical cars to show how rich they are. Assuming that the car is street legal, then if you have enough money, you will be able to get a parking space. As far as the practicalities of operating the car, the cost of a professional driver is going to be tiny compared to cost of the car and the parking space, so any difficulties that exist in driving and maintaining the car, are not going to be your problem. Once you have a driver, then they are amazing at squeezing into tight spaces, and if they can’t, then they’ll just drive around and pick you up when you call them. Hong Kong rich-people culture is funny so if you do buy a Mercedes Maybach S600 and you drive it yourself, most people will think you are very odd. For that matter, driving *any* car yourself for a daily commute is considered a bit weird. Most people that I know who have cars that they drive themselves, use them essentially as “land yachts” which they use to drive to the countryside on the weekends. Just out of curiosity, are you an American? I’m one myself, and Americans have cultural habits that most HKer’s consider bizarre (i.e. spending large amounts of money for a car and then insisting on driving it themselves).

Is Brabus better than AMG?
Personally, I don’t think that one is better than the other, instead, I simply think that they’re different. They started off as being similar companies. Both AMG and Brabus began as automotive engineering companies that specialized in making mechanical and aesthetic changes to Mercedes Benz cars. AMG probably always had a bit of a closer relationship to Mercedes than Brabus, as they also built and tested racing engines for them. In 1999, Mercedes parent DaimlerChrysler bought a controlling interest in AMG. In 2005, Daimler AG completed the deal and bought full ownership of AMG. Their relationship is not entirely unlike that of BMW and its M division, but M always existed within BMW in one form or another, and AMG remains independent. Perhaps BMW and Alpina would be a better example. At this point, AMG develops fully warrantied high performance and aesthetic packages for existing Mercedes models, and they also develop their own cars. Their cars are outstanding. They are used as the safety cars in Formula 1. The current AMG GT63S is almost beyond description, they are exceptionally fast and powerful yet they retain a certain degree of refinement and fit well within the overall design language of Mercedes Benz. Brabus remains an after-market tuner. Not all work is warrantied, and it’s a bit difficult to know what will and what will not be covered. However, one great benefit to Brabus is that they’ll do nearly anything that a customer asks for, and AMG can no longer offer this level of bespoke service. Cars modified by Brabus are monsters. The Brabus 900 is a Maybach, with every accompanying refinement, capable of reaching 60mph from a stop in 3.7 seconds and capable of achieving a limited top speed of 217mph. The Maybach is a tank, and yet these are respectable supercar numbers. The 900 looks somewhat tame compared to other Brabus-modified cars (depending on your personal preferences and tastes there can, for some, be a downside to producing whatever a customer wishes). Both companies are very good at what they do.

Some reports put Audi on tier 3… tier 1- Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Maybach, Jaguar (maybe?), maserati, Porsche tier 2- BMW, MERCEDES, Audi, Lexus tier 3- Volvo, Lincoln, Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura, Genesis tier 4- all the other luxury-ious models such as the Kia 900, Avalon, etc made by mainstream car companies.
