Is the Toyota Yaris Hatchback 2020 (essentially Mazda 2) a good snow car?
Toyota never makes it easy. The Yaris sedan is built by Mazda, but the Yaris hatchback is actually a Japanese domestic market Vitz. Regardless of provenance, neither will be a good snow car on account of being very lightweight and low powered. If you experience a crash in such a tiny car, chances of injury are higher compared to a heavier and larger vehicle. If you want a car with better winter capabilities that’s sold by Toyota, you can step up to the RAV4. The smaller CHR is just another small FWD car looking like a crossover.
What's the best cheap car I can buy used that will last me a reasonably long time?
A key question is whether or not you want 4WD .... I like it a lot, especially in a wintry place, but I grew up driving FWD cars in Scotland and never had an issue. If you want 4WD, choices for a car (as opposed to an SUV) are limited, and the bigger vehicles won't meet your fuel consumption goals. I am a big Audi fan and that would be one of my first choices, an A4 quattro with the small turbo engine (1.8). However, they can be expensive for routine maintenance and older German cars tend to break little plastic stuff (they use environmentally friendly plastics). My daily driver is a 15 year old A6 with quattro and a manual gearbox. The best deal for simple transportation is a brand that is undervalued by the public. My usual go-to when people ask is Hyundai-Kia ... used ones are very well priced, their engineering is better than most people think, and their long lasting warranty protects you from the risk of major mechanical repairs. I'll also second the vote for Subaru, and of course they are all 4WD. Another one worth a look is Mazda, for the same reasons as Hyundai. However, they only offer 4WD in the big SUVs, so you'd be talking FWD in a Mazda 2 or Mazda 3. The MazdaSpeed 3 is a ton of fun (car guy here) :)
Why doesn't Mazda import AWD models for the Mazda3 and the Mazda6?
I can’t tell you why Mazda made this decision but I can identify a few of their considerations and add some commentary - Cost of Certification There are a ton of technical rules around this. Mostly, the rules are designed to ensure that cars on sale meet emissions and safety standards. AWD cars use different transmissions, drive line configurations, and potentially different engine calibrations. If a manufacturer wants to sell a version of the car with these changes, they have to certify the emissions and fuel consumption and can’t ‘carry over’ the work from similar cars that have passed certification. Also, AWD cars sometimes use different floor pans or have different crash dynamics (or a substantially different weight) and automakers have to submit that version of the car to the safety authorities and get it certified as well. People toss out figures of $1 million to $5 million to get a car certified for sale in all 50 states. Manufacturing and Supply Chain Complexity As far as I can tell, Mazda doesn’t sell their AWD cars in left hand drive (LHD) markets. It might be pretty straightforward for them to put the AWD equipment in a car. But it might not be. Even if it is, they’re going to have to figure out how to order the right parts to build AWD LHD cars (e.g now they have to order AWD parts with LHD headlights and dashboards whereas in the past they didn’t) and factor that into their quality inspections as well. Also, Mazda now has to manage more parts going into North America - new drive shafts, axles, suspensions, ect. They need to support the cars if they break. Product Mix In addition to costs (outlined above), Mazda has to think about how they can sell these. A Mazda dealer can only have so many cars on the lot and there are a lot of different ways people want to buy Mazda cars (e.g trim level, color, transmission are all important and can make or break a deal for a customer). Mazda dealers would have to think about what cars their customers want and adjust their mix accordingly. Does an AWD Mazda 3 bring new people into the show room? Does it get Mazda 3 customers to pay more? Or CX-3/CX-5 customers to pay less? And for every AWD Mazda 3 they sell, did they lose a customer because they didn’t have the ‘right car’ (e.g a FWD Mazda 3) on the lot? CAFE considerations CAFE is a program that helps set fuel economy goals. Each manufacturer gets scored separately and manufacturers actually get seperate scores for ‘trucks’ and ‘cars’. Because it’s a program that’s used to score easy victories, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. The MPGs reported don’t match the MPGs on the window sticker, SUVs are usually count as ‘trucks’, and the milage standard you have to meet is governed by how much area a vehicle takes up between its 4 wheels. Right now, Mazda is one of the best Manufacturers by CAFE performance. Their imported cars in 2014 got a CAFE average of 41.5 MPG and their light trucks got 31.4 MPG average in 2015. That’s very good and because they’re doing such a good job. They get ‘CAFE credits’ which they can use to relax future standards or sell to other automakers. As of 2014, they had ~62 million CAFE credits. ,CAFE credits could be worth a dollar or two each. AWD sedans could make it so they accumulate fewer CAFE credits. Because of the program’s measurement eccentricities, it’s probably better for Mazda to sell a 25 mpg CX-5 than a 28 MPG AWD Mazda3. Conclusion It’s all about the dollars and yen. I’m sure Mazda would love to offer as many cars as possible (e.g the Mazda 2, AWD sedans, the Miata with the smaller engine) but each car has explicit costs (regulatory costs, opportunity costs, complexity costs) and can only provide so much benefit.

Don’t know fully…earliest model Mazda cars I saw were the Mazda 800s, and the Mazda Cosmo, the second of which I only ever saw in a car magazine. First one I ever rode in was a Mazda 1500, which was probably the pre-Capella. The parent company is Toyo Kogyo, and it is or was headquartered in Hiroshima..which I’m sure there have been some jokes about over the years. their 1970s cars were things like the 808 Savannah, which was the successor to the 1200/1300, the Capella, the 929, and the first model 121, which to me was styled to look like a very compact version of an American car such as , say, a Mk IV Continental. Plus of course all the rotary versions of the above cars.R100, RX2–3–4–5. Later I had a bit to do with the Ford Telstar, which was a Ford-badged 2nd generation Mazda 626 FWD, often with the 2.2 12v engine. My impressions of that car, was that it was good quality very strong mechanically. I worked on some or most of them, but not really the rotaries in any deep surgery sense. …In the 1970s models, there was a general feeling among mechanics that although well-made and finished, they were ‘soft” mechanically compared to their Toyota and Datsun counterparts.That if an 808 vs a Corolla vs a 120Y/Sunny…the Mazda, although maybe best looker of the three, should be the last preferred, though still considered. These latter days, things like the Mazda 2, 3, and 6. My impressions are that it is a very good product. But for some reasons, as a non-American, I notice on this site a lot of American posters seeming to devalue disparage or sneer at them.Compared to Honda or Toyota.

Hello there, Oh goodness there are some ,choice, bad ones - some intentional, and some not … I’ll go through my favourite examples. Fiat Ritmo, - this is the go-(slightly)-faster Abarth version. Not a success in the United States or Canada thanks to sharing its name with a then-well-selling brand of ,Toilet Paper,! Not the first example of toilet humour, as we will see… Renault Manager, - a,.,k,.,a. Renault 21. A freak of a name, as the initial idea for marketing it over the pond (i.e. USA and Canada) was to call it a ‘Chamade’ - this was found not to work because the Yanks and Canadians would either promptly call it a ‘Chemise’ and all its Victoria’s Secret connotations (remember kids, Americans are public prudes - and unhinged in private!) - or , else, be confused with the small economic Daihatsu Charade, which was already in the market. Which is difficult, but, there you go. The 21 was freaky for being produced as ,two, distinct platforms! One was FWD and very up to the minute, and the high powered versions were a completely RWD - but both featured the same auto slushbox which was, by all accounts, the reason for their insipid glacial acceleration … and the manual box was, well, woolly would be a nice description. Freaky name for a freaky car… Mitsubishi Carisma, - famous for having none. Nissan Cedric, - A strange name for a ,series, of cars, some of which have made it overseas under the names of Maxima (which is better, I suppose) or others. Nissan Gloria, - Another series of smaller four door cars over the years. Cedric’s girlfriend, perhaps? Mohs Ostentatienne Opera Sedan, - for a car that had ,no, ostentation, ,no, opera (though the larger ladies might have appreciated its sheer bulk in terms of interior space which was a redeeming feature), and ,no, sedan - its sole door was a rear hatch, making this behemoth probably one of the world’s largest hatchbacks (Jeremy Clarkson’s Fiat Giant Panda limo being the current world record holder - and funnier). Ford Probe, - Actually quite a sophisticated beast, it is a re-body of the best bits of the Mazda MX-6 sportscar. Its name, however, is iffy - I always associated it with a space probe (e.g. Pioneer 10, Voyager 1 & 2), however the majority of people tend to think more - ,medically,. In truth , though, Ford had made a number of ‘Ford Probe’ experimental cars in the late 1970s and early 1980s, one of which became (with a few mods) a production car - the Ford Probe IV, which then became the best-selling Ford Sierra from Ford Europe. Great Wall Wingle, - From China, and made there - shudder - and with a name like that I think it should be given a miss. Mazda Titan Dump,. More epic toilet humour from Japan. The truck, however, it a neat idea for tight spaces (wicked, ,wicked, grin - there’s just so much ,mileage, from this running gag…) Chevrolet Celebrity, - I suppose famous for being the last gasp of the much-reviled 1980’s K-cars trailing off into the 1990s. Not an actual celebrity, btw. Austin Princess, An oddly named car - this one’s clearly 1970’s, as it is brown and browner. Not a bad car… Then it had a transition and became the ,Austin Ambassador.,. The mind boggles. Audi Q8., What’s weird about this one ? Audi has sold millions of these Panzer tanks, and they are really popular everywhere. Say the name out loud … Kuuu. Aight. OK - this is a car the United States believes in liberating from the late Saddam Hussein, as long as they have a UN resolution to do so. And it's best if the car is liberated in the Persian Gulf (seeing as there are lots of them sold there, this isn’t a steep pitch). They’ll even have a war about it too… Toyota Urban Cruiser, - sadly a ,very, dodgy name for an otherwise competently engineered car. Mazda LaPuta, … sigh … named after Johnathan Swift’s flying city in ,Gulliver’s Travels, (which I have always found pleasantly bawdy - and do you know, there is a real Lilliput in Ireland?) which could fly with ,no visible means of support,. Spanish for ‘a fallen woman of ill repute’ and other fruitier names e.g. tart. Japanese oddness for sure. Toyota Toyopet, - which is the ancestor of the Corona and the Carina. Its name was literally a ,near miss. ,They wanted to initially call it - wait for it - the ,Toyolet. ,Can you imagine the witty repartee - ‘Hello, I drive a Toyolet.’ ‘You sure do buddy - you sure ,do.’ There are lots of others. James May picked up that the last Ferrari supercar has an odd name indeed … Ferrari LaFerrari, - Which James promptly - and correctly - labeled ‘The Ferrari The Ferrari’. Oh, it's a great car, but oddly named. But it's not alone… The track-only ,Ferrari FXX K, - the LaFerrari’s racecar version, and named - it seems - after the first words English speakers uttered on seeing it for the first time. Literally the f-bomb… Lamborghini Countach, - the name, in Piedmontese Italian, is also a slang expression when translated into English as the F-bomb, in expletive. There are many, many more, sadly. But this lot do stand out. With kind regards.
Are RWD cars faster than FWD cars?
Q: Are RWD cars faster than FWD cars? First we have to distinguish between faster and quicker. Faster is top speed. Quicker is time to reach a speed or cover a distance from standing start. Top speed is proportional to cube root of power. FWD (and front axle of 4WD) are limited in amount of power that can be sent through them. The outer CV joint has to allow for steering angle, this limits the size of the CV joint and the amount of power that can be put through them. Also FWD have torque steering issues, SAAB once stated that 200bhp was the limit for safety. Various special differentials have allowed that to be exceeded and Ford Focus RS500 had 345bhp. This is woefully short of the 600+bhp that performance RWD cars can put into the rear axle with stronger CV joints that only have to allow for suspension travel. The most powerful series production FWD car ever was the 400bhp ,Oldsmobile Toronado W-34 ,which is neither fast or quick for the power it has. 10 Most Powerful Front-Wheel-Drive Cars Ever RWD don't have the power limits that FWD have so will be faster. Quick being the time for 0 to 60 mph or time over 1/4 mile from a standing start is dependent on power to weight ratio and traction. FWD although initially having around 60% of weight on front wheels giving good traction unloads the front as acceleration increases. Under hard acceleration they can have as little as 50% on front wheels. RWD can put ALL the weight on the rear axle so under hard acceleration can have twice the traction and acceleration of a FWD car of the same weight and power. FWD due tendancy to lose traction and uselessly spin front wheels are called “Scrabble wagons", once the FWD car's wheels are spinning RWD is quicker. This is a 1994 Nissan 200SX, 1.8L DOHC 16 valve turbocharged 170bhp, 1200kg. 0–60mph around 7.6 sec, top speed 140mph. This one has 2 washers under the wastegate bracket, a 3″ turbo back exhaust, K&N filter, 14psi boost, maybe 190bhp. So 0–60mph is around 7sec and top speed 145mph. With 1/2 the power it is both quicker and faster than the most powerful 400bhp FWD production car. It has the same 9.5m turning circle as Mazda Miata/MX-5. USE A FULL SYNTHETIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AFT134 SPEC for : "Aisin Warner ,TF-80SC SPEC USA AFT 134 (SHELL , MOBIL ETC) This transmission is used in a dozen cars world wide.Warner http://www.atraonline.com/gears/2008/2008-08/2008_8_6.pdf More importantly, you need at least 12 quarts to do this job properly, even though the capacity of the transmission is around 8 quarts. This is because the capacity inside the transmission does not account for the fluid volume in the hoses or transmission cooler (in the radiator unit but obviously on a separate circuit). Thus you need more fluid than you may initially realize. A transaxle is just the combining of a gearbox and differential plus clutch into a single compact unit. It can be used for FWD (most common) or RWD. What are the Mazda CX 5 models?
In the US the models are Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Grand Touring Turbo. Every trim is offered with FWD or AWD except the Grand Touring Turbo where I think AWD is standard. For awhile at least Mazda was not offering AWD’s in Florida and some other states that rarely saw snow (maybe Arizona?) for average fuel economy reasons since the FWD does about 2–3 mpg better.
How hard is it to replace a power steering pump?
My RWD Nissan 200SX, easy. 2 hoses with banjo bolts, a tensioner with a bolt at the top and pivot bolt at the bottom. A FWD Mazda 323F, even easier, don't have to bend over the car at all. It's right at the top of the engine bay in front of the engine and behind the radiator. My mates FWD Ford Fiesta mkV 1.4L Zetec. Utter horror story, take it to a pro mechanic. It's hidden behind the engine and below the manifold.
