I write this as someone who has owned both vehicles, though quite a long time ago for the Mitsubishi Mirage, a 1989 model driven for around 10 years. The car has remained among the cheaper vehicles for all this time, and like the bottom of the line cars from other manufacturers it is built to a price point competitive with those other cars. This means that the Mitsubishi Trading Co. builds it in the least costly labor markets world wide. To compare it to a Tesla Model 3, even one built in their Shanghai China plant is a false comparison because the Tesla is a step or two up just in features alone from the Mirage, not to mention the Tesla’s really impressive performance. The Mirage is working very hard to get up to highway speeds rather anemically, and from my experience an engine worked that hard is not suited for long trips at high speed. I found that my 1989 four cylinder 1.5L Mirage sedan was spewing blue smoke by the time I had 150,000 miles on it. It died shortly after. My replacement was a two years older Toyota Celica 2.0 L of similar weight, but at highway speeds it engine was at 2000 rpm when for the same speed the Mirage used 3000 rpm. I traded that Celica in on my Prius and the engine was still in very good shape. My mechanic had told me just change the oil regularly and it will last 250,000 miles. The Tesla I now have has an electric motor tested to last around a million miles. The Tesla’s battery is warrantied to last as long as that Mitsubishi engine did, and others have seen Tesla batteries last twice as long as the warrantee. The Tesla of course will never need an oil change, or a water pump replacement, starter batteries, or regular brake repairs unless I am foolish enough to go road racing with it. Those front calipers are still pristine looking after 30,000 miles because the Tesla slows down by regeneration. I had much the same experience with the Prius which also used regeneration, but the Tesla is even better. It has one foot driving, coming to a complete stop without using the brake pedal, as the control system is that sophisticated. It has near instant (silent) acceleration to 100kph in 5 seconds, if I want to, and effortlessly can exceed 160 kph, reaching a top speed of 225 kph like it was on rails. I know, because I have done it repeatedly on a closed course. That did no damage at all to the motor since it is speed limited in my version, from the 300 kmh that its performance version can do. You may get to try that with the Mitsubishi just one time, I suspect. I will never need to buy another car in my life, though of course I am in my 70’s. But I have said to younger people in my life that generally if you can afford it, buy the car that will last. It may take buying two or more Mitsubishi Mirages to get the sort of safety, and longevity such a car will give you. And you still will not have a car with lane keeping and radar braking as good or better than a Mercedes in a car costing much less. Did I mention the cost of electricity I have consumed being half or less than gasoline for the Mirage? Or the fact that the Mirage fuel tank only holds enough to go perhaps 50 kilometers further down the road? Your money, your choice of course.
Right now I am researching the same thing. My main interests are subcompacts, cheap, entry level trim and reliable. You can never go wrong with a Honda Fit, a Toyota Yaris or a Mazda 3 (or 2 if you can get one). Those vehicles are a lot more expensive than the up and coming Kia Rio or the Hyundai Accent. Or even the Nissan Versa. I am presently leaning toward the Rio because a new one can be quite reasonable for the basic trim line with automatic. It carries a five year 60k initial warranty, as does the Hyundai. About six months ago I was offered a new 2018 Rio base trim auto for $13.1k. Wish I was in the market then. I am looking at a two or three year old one as well, to take advantage of initial depreciation. I am a believer in the proposition vehicles manufactured now or recently can last as long as you want them to if maintained according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Additionally, all late model cars have backup cameras. Another vehicle to view is the cheapest new car sold in the U.S., the Mitsubishi Mirage, made in Thailand. It also has a 5/60 warranty. However, I am steering away from that unit. Read the reviews. Additionally, there are some who believe the manufacturer will leave the country. There is also the route of looking for a Beater. If you find such a vehicle, say for $5k or less, have your trusted mechanic look it over. Around here that costs about a hundred bucks. My major concern now is insurance. This is a very high risk category and premiums are priced accordingly. Here are a couple of quotes for basic coverage in WA state: —If the teen is living independently and is not part of any other policy, a quote I received was $394 a month. —If the teen is added to the parent’s policy and coverage is bundled with other coverages, the premium could drop to $233 a month. The downside of this situation is likely to be that in a chargeable accident the aggrieved party could go against the parents. Everybody could be wiped out. The breakpoint on premiums is 25, but at least one company told me that 21 is another break point. In any event, shop around. If you’re lucky you’ll get some good answers to both the insurance comment and the right car to buy.
Ford Focus will be a very good car for you because of it's compact size hatchback body. in other cars Toyota Vitz, Mitsubishi Mirage, Hyundai i10 & i20, Fiat polo & Golf are also good mid sized hatchback cars for daily use
The absolute worst I have EVER seen was a 1996–1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT 3.0 V-6 DOHC with twin Turbos. Labor time for spark plug change is about 20 hours. You MUST use the correct Iridium NGK OEM spark plugs, nothing else will work correctly. Plan on removing BOTH turbos, intake manifold, and almost the ENTIRE top end of the engine to change the spark plugs. You have to be absolutely SURE exactly what you are doing, as one incorrect connection and the car will NOT start or even crank over. Most of the engine wiring harness has to be removed from the top of the engine. Plan on changing the oil, Anti Freeze, thermostat, and most of the time, upper and lower radiator hoses at the same time. MOST mechanics will inspect the timing belt (inspection cover is UNDER all the stuff you have to remove to get the spark plugs out). And in MOST cases, recommend a timing belt, water pump, tensioner, kit (add another $350 for parts). Typical 60K service on these cars runs $6–8,000.00 likely the most expensive car on the planet to do a regular service on. Base model 3 liter DOHC, is around $4500–5,000 for the 60K service. I bought one with 24K on it, and sold it at 60,500 miles after finding out how much REGULAR service was to have done. At the time the Serpentine belt was around $175.00 and spark plugs were $24 each, add in the $350 for the timing belt/water pump/tensioner kit, front struts ($150 each), clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing replacement ($350 for parts alone)… I decided it was just too expensive to own and sold it….. this was after spending $800 for a set of tires (was on 3rd set of front tires at 60K), $50 for front brake pads, oil and filter change ($50 for oil and $20 for filter)… I just gave up The most time consuming by far was my 1977 Monza Mirage with a 305 V-8/Automatic trans, AC, PS, PB…. you have to lift the compressor out of the way, remove the compressor mounting bracket, to get to one plug, on the other side you have to REMOVE a section of the steering column to get 2 plugs out. You MUST use the factory ignition wire mounts and use EXACT length wires, or the wires WILL burn through in just a few hundred miles. Figure on at least 6–8 hours to change plugs. I would suggest Platinium or Iridium plugs as if you use copper you will be doing the job again in about 12,000 miles. The Worst job on that car was replacing the starter. Book time is 12–14 hours, and it takes every bit of that. You have to remove the AC compressor, remove the mounting bracket, passenger side exhaust manifold (from the top), completely loosen and drop the stock exhaust system (cat must be removed from car), then loosen and remove 2 engine mounting bolts from the engine mounts, and jack the engine up 2 -3 inches, after removing the bolts, the starter will FALL out.
This depends on your playstyle. My personal opinion is Russia, because they have a mix of everything, and their MiG-21SMT is arguably the best jet in the game as of now. If you’re interested in boom and zooming in fast planes with mediocre to underwhelming maneuverability, the ,US, should be your choice. Their jets are also terrific overall, there is not a single bad jet except for maybe the F-100D (in the eys of some) because of its 10.0 battle rating the F-4E is currently one of the best jets in the game, they also have great CAS for tank RB, and are notorious for having the best bombers. If you’re looking for an all-round tree, pick the ,USSR,. The Yaks are very good at being jack of all trades, the Lavochkins and I-185s are decent energy fighters. Their bombers are overall good, they have the Pe-8 with that massive FAB-5000 bomb for example, the Yer-2s are versatile in speed and bomb load options and the Pe-2s are a mix of bombers and ground attackers. Jets are also particularly good, like the Yak-23, Yak-30, MiG-9/L, MiG-15bis and the MiG-17. As for supersonics, the MiG-19PT is very good in air RB even now with all those missiles being fired, the MiG-21F-13 is also decent but you need to actively use your mind to fly it well, and the MiG-21SMT is currently and arguably the best jet at the moment because of its crazy acceleration, climb rate, energy retention and its R-60 missiles. Germany, has a mix of boom and zoomers (Fw 190s, Ta 152s) and energy fighters (Bf 109s). Somewhat an all-round nation, not as much as the USSR, but they have great propeller aircraft under the right hands. Their jet line can be underwhelming at first considering the first one they’ll unlock is the Me 163, at a battle rating and with a playstyle unfriendly to jet beginners, and the Me 262 A-1a is not really easy to fly for first-time jet pilots, but they are all good once you get the hang of them. Of particular interest is the fact that they have both worlds towards the end; Russian and American jets. They have Sabres, MiGs and the F-104. Maybe soon enough, they will have the F-4F to tag along their MiG-21MF. Japan ,may be the easiest nation so far. Most of their props are straightforward dogfighters, which makes them friendly to newcomers, especially if you consider the fact that Allied teams still suck; they actually turn fight with their Zeroes and such even though they always lose. If you get bored of turn fighting, you have their fast, well-armed heavy fighters for boom and zooming, then you also have the Ki-61s and the noteworthy Ki-84s for energy fighting. They also have a wide range of torpedo bombers if you’re interested in the navy, but lack CAS and noteworthy bombers. As of now, they have a good jet lineup. The Kikka is pretty fast for a 6.7 jet, the only issue with it that newcomers may find is that upon being unlocked it only has one cannon so you’ll need the otsu mod researched for the second cannon. They have the Ki-200, like the Me 163, a decent aircraft under the right hands, two good Sabres (the F-86F-40 particularly, though it gets AIM-9,B ,Sidewinders they may still be useful), a decent indigenous supersonic jet (Mitsubishi T-2), a special F-104 variant dedicated to Japan and the F-4EJ Phantom, which is actually faster than the US F-4E. To be frank, ,France,’s prop lineups are underwhelming overall. They don’t have a single “superprop” except for the lend-leased F8F-1B Bearcat. The rest are meh, their top indigenous prop is the VB 10, which might be decent when spaded but still flawed. It’s 4.3 BR as far as I can remember. The rest of their props are low tier, but they have notable ones such as the VG.30, Potez 630, MB.152C and MB.157. They have good bombers; good payload options and decent defensive armament. They lead up to the quite fast SO.4050 Vautour IIB if you insist on flying jet bombers. For a jet bomber, it’s decent. The IIA is a much better choice though since you can use it as a heavy fighter; it has four 30mm cannons, but beware of missiles. They have a decent jet lineup; the F-86K is a very good jet loved by many, fast and well-armed. They also have the best F-100 in the game, because it’s the F-100D model and at 9.7 BR where it doesn’t face top tier jets, but transonic ones mostly, and is armed with four missiles. The Etendard is also fantastic, it’s the fastest non-afterburning subsonic jet in the game. The starter MD.450s are good because of their BR, the followup Mysteres (both IIA and IIC) are also decent, you should try them out. But of course the Mirage IIIC takes the spotlight - it has the best missiles in the game (R.550 Magic 1s), amazing maneuverability, high performance (but not the best) and the long-ranged Matra R.530 missile. My only gripe with it is that it only has two short ranged IR missiles, whereas on the MiG-21 and F-4, you find four. Italy ,overall is a good nation. Its low tier aircraft are all fantastic, the G.55 variants are very good, and they have some lend-lease. The G.91YS is especially considered one of the best subsonic jets in the game if not the best. But Italy lacks in the supersonic jet department, because sadly they didn’t have much after the war. They are currently at their cap for supersonic tier 6 - the F-104S, which is still good by all means but needs a decent pilot. Further beyond, you see Italian jets that are too advanced for tier 6. Sweden ,is honestly underwhelming as a whole, because it has the smallest tree in the game (at least right now) and there are many gaps. They do have props that are quite good and interesting like the derivatives of the J-21/A-21 and J-22, but that’s about it. If you insist on Sweden, I suggest aiming for their jets, because that’s where they really shine. The J-29D is one of the best jets at its BR, it’s a joy to fly, very fun, maneuverable and armed to the death. The J32B Lansen is the fastest subsonic jet in the game, armed with four 30mms and four missiles. The J35D Draken, the one that gets the spotlight, almost takes the cake for the most maneuverable jet in the game and gets four deadly RB24J / AIM-9J/P missiles. China,… unless you are a completionist, don’t bother. I only grinded it because I felt like I had to in order to keep my status as to having every aircraft researched. It’s a bad nation, filled with only copy pastes and lend-lease. I can only think of threeunique (somewhat) aircraft, the Hawk III low tier premium, Shenyang F-5 jet premium (a MiG-17 with an afterburner and two missiles), and the J-7II which is a MiG-21F-13, but with two guns instead of one. My advice is please don’t look at China. The only way to save it is to replace many of those copy pasted vehicles with lend-leased props that are still not in the game, and for Gaijin to focus on their modern jets, because there are some genuinely interesting jet fighters and ground attackers they could add for them, like the indigenous JH-7, J-7G (which is a J-7II withg double delta wings, armed with two AIM-9Ps and two Magic 1s, a radar and a better engine!), J-7FS, Q-5 Fantan variants and many more.
1: Chevrolet HHR Why: Small, underpowered, and forgiving of mistakes 2: Mitsubishi Mirage Why: small, excellent fuel economy, underpowered. 3:1999 Toyota Corolla Why: Built like an old Nokia, these cars will keep going and going. Unfortunately, if you want to have some fun, the car won’t let you. It is slow, bad tempered , wallowy, and it’s slushbox calls to mind compromises and bad credit rather than acceleration or handling . 4: Ford Focus SE hatchback Why: more style, slightly better performance, and better handling. Will allow you to have a little fun without breaking any laws. And it has excellent fuel economy as well. Lesson: start with something SLOW and forgiving of your inevitable learner driver mistakes. Those cars may not be as fun to drive as say a 328i, or 350Z, but you will gain experience. And that’s what matters. That’s all I have for now. I’ll add more if I think of any.
