How reliable is a Nissan 240SX?

Nissans are not only pretty reliable, but depending on the model, somewhat easier to fix than say…an older Subaru. Those can be a nightmare. We’re a Nissan family around here. I own a 1997 D21 (‘hardbody’) truck with 119,000 original miles. It is in perfect condition and I wouldn’t sell it for anything. The wife owns a 1998 Pathfinder. Pretty much the same thing. Can’t go wrong with a Nissan as long as it is in fairly good shape when you buy it, and know something of the history. People there will always try to help you out with problems, and some of them are really good at it. As far as recommending this Nissan or that, more information is required. Year, type, mileage, etc. Some pictures of my truck shown below. It is slightly modified with a Lund sunshade over the windshield, and a canopy. Has air conditioning, power steering, upgraded stereo, 15″ tires and American Beauty steel wheels. It has no issues. It just IS. Its nickname at Infamous Nissan is the ,Teal Terror,, which is sort of a joke referring to the fact that teal is one of the less popular colors for these trucks. If you haven’t owned a Nissan before, try to avoid the ones made prior to 1991, because many of those had ‘Throttle body fuel injection’ (TBI) rather than a straight fuel rail injection system. TBI can be tricky unless you know what you are doing, and the parts for that system are getting harder to find. For first-time Nissan owners I always recommend this. This was the last year for the D21 hardbody, which they replaced with the Frontier. Why don’t they make these trucks for the USA anymore? Simple. I,t is called the Chicken Tax,. If you want a blanket recommendation on a Nissan, buy a truck instead. The good ones just keep going up in value, as long as you keep them maintained and looking clean. The 4WD models are nice, but overrated and harder to fix sometimes. 2WD in a Nissan truck will take you pretty much wherever you want to go anyway, even in modest snow. They come in three basic versions. The SE, (most options) the XE, (mine, which means no power windows or door locks mainly) and the Base. You can get King Cab or standard cab. You are much better off with the King Cab. My recommendation on which YEAR you should buy is either the 96 or the 97, because they came with the new OBD-2 diagnostic system. You can just plug in any code reader to see what’s wrong if you get a check engine light. Prior to 1996, you have to pull the passenger seat and read the flashing light codes the old-fashioned way, which is not as good and a pain in the butt. One good thing about the D21 truck is that it has a timing CHAIN, rather than a timing belt, at least in the four-cylinder version. The V-6 has a belt. I recommend going with the four banger because they are much easier to fix and you have more room under the hood to do it. And a timing chain gives you plenty of warning when they need replacement. (chain rattle) No more belt breaking and you stuck on the freeway waiting for a tow truck. The later models like mine also came with rear-wheel ABS. The advantage to rear-only ABS is that if you HAVE to…you can still lock up the brakes. I never liked four-wheel ABS anyway, for just that reason.
