Uh…there’s no such thing as a Toyota Camry with a V4 motor.
Does it makes sense to buy an expensive car when they only have the same features as a Toyota Camry?
Well, this is only my opinion, but there is a side of this to consider: There is the list of features, and then there’s the package. The Camry and the Lotus Evora And the Camry engine with the Edelbrock supercharger, in the Evora :) For example, you can get a Lincoln that has the same features in its power driver’s seat as a Camry. But, Lincolns are designed for fantastic comfort, and they sweat every little detail in seat design. So, a 10-way Camry seat just won’t be the same as a 10-way Lincoln seat, and when you’re spending a twentienth of your life in a car, that is a big deal. A Camry front seat and a Lincoln front seat. Similarly, if you value handling, a suspension tuned by Lotus is going to be extraordinary compared to a Camry, even though it might have the exact same number of parts. And, in the convergence of Lotus and Toyota, that same engine will have different effects in a mid-engine Evora than in a front-engine Camry. None of this is to say that the Camry isn’t an excellent car. It absolutely is. It’s just that cars are as much about a groove as a specs list, and sometimes that groove pays off more than a list of features.
Are Audi cars reliable?
I bought a 5 years old Audi A6 with 80,000+ miles on it. I drove 36,000 miles in the first 2 yrs and below is all I spent maintaining it, you be the judge, At 85k.miles - Replaced the spark plugs, not because the car died but to smoothen the acceleration $400 dollars. At 105k miles - Replaced the vacuum pump because it was leaking, I replaced the water pump as well as a proactive measure - about 900 dollars bill. OIL change every 6k miles - $150 each time (this includes a check up as well) The car is running fine, love the 3.0 SUPERCHARGED engine, probably the best engine in this class. EDIT after 95,000 Views and several comments: ,I did NOT claim maintaining Audi was inexpensive nor it is super reliable, I just shared my ownership experience with 2 Audi’s. A lot of people have questioned the 400 dollar spark plugs - the plugs itself costs $10 a piece, it is the labor charge that makes it to $400 (oil was also changed during this maintenance). Also, people asked about $150 oil change, Audi takes synthetic oil and the oil alone costs about $50, the remaining charges are for the filters and the inspection by my trusted Audi mechanic (Not dealer), I pay for his expertise and his time. EDIT (June 2017) - 113,000 Miles, - I noticed the car is shaking while braking at high speeds (70+ MPH), took the car to my mechanic and replaced the front brake rotors - Parts cost me $255 and labor was $150 - total damage to the bank was $405. Conclusion: Are Audi’s as reliable and cheap as Toyota Camry? - ,No, they are not,, I don’t think anyone can compete with Toyota when it comes to reliability. I have driven 4Runners and Land Cruisers with 300,000+ miles, and those cars drove just fine, thumbs up to Toyota. Does Audi drive like a Toyota Camry - ,Hell NO !! - it runs like an Audi, and I love it. July 2017 - added pictures. Aug 2017, - For those who speaks Kms instead of miles - as of now, I am running at 115,500 Miles ( 186,000 Kms). My car can cover about 800kms in one tank of Petrol that's about 12Km/liter and in city I get around 8Km/L. Sept 2017:, The tires needed replacement, the current tires did duty for at least 40,000 miles (it came with when I bought the car). I got Firestone Indy500 performance tires. Total spend was $759 for 4 tires and installation. Also did a wheel alignment and balancing, that cost me $89 - Current mileage on the car is 118,600 Miles (190,899 Kms). March 2018: ,At ,1,22,000 Miles I said goodbye to my Audi. This has got nothing to do with Audi’s reliability, my interest has changed to off-roading and overlanding. I picked up a Lexus GX-470 ( Land Cruiser Prado) and I have been building that car. Audi did depreciate quiet a bit, but I found a buyer for my A6 and he paid me a decent price (Less than the KBB recommended value, but that was expected for a German car). I do miss my Audi, but at the same time I am having a great time driving through the Arizona deserts on my Lifted Lexus. :-) March 2020 : ,Well, good-bye Japs, hello Germans. I sold my Lexus and bought a C7 Audi A6 with the same 3T motor. The car had 87,000 miles on it and I already added 5000 miles to it in 30 days :-). Here are the things I did so far to keep the car in good condition. Changed oil, did a carbon clean up (this engine has a history of carbon build up), topped up fluids and replaced the rear breaks since they were worn. The brake set costed me $260 ( pads and slotted rotors), $100 in labor for installing the brakes. Please don’t send messages telling me I paid $18 too much for a break job, I am not looking to squeeze every dollar every time. I also added a software tune (APR stage-1) the car now makes about 430 BHP and 0-to 60 miles come in 4.4 seconds in my initial tests. Jan 2021 at 97,000 miles - ,Check engine light came on, got it tested and it came out as an error from Fuel injector number-6, my local mechanic did a fuel injector service ($130), added a couple of bottles of fuel treatment fluid and cleared the error. The car is running just fine, if the error comes back this may require the fuel injector to be replaced. It is always a pleasure to drive this car, puts a smile every time I floor the pedal. :-) April 2021 at 99,000 miles ,- AC stopped blowing cold air and it turned out to be a failed compressor. Took the car to a local mechanic, total damage to the bank this time is $1100 including labor and parts.
As a mechanic what car do you drive and what cars would you never own?
I own a variety of vehicles 10 total Personal vehicles for my wife she has a 2008 Mini Cooper supercharged convertible d a 2003 Cadillac Escalade. I drive the 2007 Cadillac DTS and the Chevy Silverado. My auto repair shop I have a 2017 Honda Accord 4 cylinder,2006 Honda Odyssey, 2007 Honda Accord V6 , 2006 Mercury Milan, 2007 Chevy Impala, 2003 Lexus ES300, 2003 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder, 2007 Cadillac DTS and a 2006 Chevy Silverado. 7 or these are customer loaner vehicles. We had a very nice Volvo V70 station wagon I sold it due to a few quirky problems and I had a 2002 BMW 325xi sw and a 2009 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder but they both got totaled by my 2 daughters ( don’t you love kids!) These have all been good vehicles. I maintain them very well since I can’t have my customers break down or my wife or kids. The 7 loaner vehicles were not my choice to purchase they were available from my customers so I bought them knowing what I was buying due to service history. The Mercury Milan is the only questionable purchase since it’s a Ford and Volvo product together. But it has been a good car. What would I never own, this is a tricky question but I would say if I was buying a used vehicle around 2010 to 2015. Any Ford with a V8 spark plug and timing chain problems and they’re a Ford enough said. Any Dodge Truck they still rust out. Chrysler or Jeep cheaply made and have a fair amount of electrical problems, not very good on gas. If I had to buy a minivan it would be a Chrysler or Dodge only best bang for your buck! Any Hyundai or Kia engine problems and they burn oil. Starting to cheapen up their product. Honda ,Toyota,Subaru and Nissan are much better Any BMW or Mercedes Benz or Volvo are expensive to maintain and they still break, not made like they used to A used Mini Cooper or sports car. They’re probably abused and not well taken of. This is my opinion on what I see in my shop. It’s all based on what your buying the vehicle for. Is Toyota risking its reputation for reliability by equipping the new Supra with engines from BMW (a brand notorious for poor reliability)?
Did you notice that the Supra is generating 335 horsepower from the same engine that makes 382 horsepower in the Z4? Also, did you notice that Toyota’s V-6 generates 301 horsepower in the Camry, but with supercharging reaches 430 horsepower in the Lotus Evora ,without any changes to the internal moving parts? Toyota appears to be conservative in using the thermal and mechanical capacity of their components. This, and good control of manufacturing variances, are probably the key drivers of their reliability. My guess is that they have tuned the new Supra very conservatively, using less boost and generating less heat. This will bring it in line with traditional Toyota reliability.

Why do people buy Mercedes and BMWs when cars like Honda and Toyota are cheaper and more reliable?
Oh, I know this one! Back in 2002, driving to meet some friends for whatever awful movie was the stupid comedy in theaters at the time, I was involved in a collision in my Nissan Altima while on a road not more than a quarter mile from home. I came upon a Jeep Grand Cherokee just stopped in the road, so I also stopped about 6 feet behind the vehicle. Within seconds, the driver put their vehicle into reverse, and backed into me so quickly that they were neither able to acknowledge my horn, nor was I able to shift into reverse despite my hand already resting on the shifter. Since the road had a slight downward slope, and the other vehicle sat higher than mine, they effectively ended up sitting on the front end of my car which damaged the hood, bumper, and radiator. All in all, about $4,000 worth of damage to what was a $16,000 car when new. Now I loved that car; I put 70,000 miles on her in the year and a half that I had her. But my parents went into flip out mode, about how the car was a death trap since it suffered so much damage at such low speeds. No amount of calm explanations about grade and angles would dissuade them, and they would not feel better unless we replaced the car with something safer. So began the comparison shopping, though when parents said safer, I just heard new car and began price shopping. As an 18 year old, the new and hot car of the time was the Subaru Impreza WRX (MSRP $24,000). Safer? Probably not, but oh so pretty and oh so fun. Naturally, it was vetoed but it set a price target of ~$25,000. My parents were very clear on the fact that they could not afford payments of anything more than the Altima had cost, so anything extra would be my responsibility. I was living rent free with my parents, with no expenses beyond my university tuition which was ~$3900 at the time. Working full time at ~$10/hr, I was living large, and agreed to the terms. I could do this no problem. About this time, Mercedes had just brought the C230 Sport Coupe to the US. Look at her! Isn’t she beautiful!?! I mean, I thought so. Supercharged 4 cylinder with 192hp, panoramic sunroof, and doors that felt like a bank vault when you slammed them shut. I wanted one in blue, automatic transmission, 6 CD changer, with manual seats because why would I ever need to move my seat position? I ended up getting one with power seats because my father claimed that he would be driving the car occasionally and didn’t want to deal with manual seats. This was in fact a lie, as I can count on one hand the number of times he drove the car. Retail price you ask? $27,000. I looked at a Honda Accord V6 (MSRP $25,000), and a Toyota Camry of similar spec (also ~$25,000), and decided that I get way more bang for my buck with the Mercedes. I drove Anastasia for 18 years, and only replaced her this year. And by replaced, I mean gave to a neighbor because she still ran just fine, while I bought myself something new. But she was getting on in years. I knew that in the next year or so, I’d probably have to replace the tires (EDIT for clarity: again) due to age, and the motor mounts were getting there, and the a/c had started leaking, and it just wasn’t worth it to me. After 18 years, I wanted a new car that had Bluetooth, and parking sensors, and was most importantly electric. I gave the new owner the list of potential concerns, and the name of my local mechanic who is an absolute sweetheart, and knows this car. Over the course of those 18 years, my number one problem with the car was the power seats. I had a resistor get stuck in one of the seat switches, which caused me a dead battery, but the switch was replaced under warranty. As she got older, sometimes the headrest switch decided it didn’t want to work. Second most common problem was a faulty design in the sunroof motor, which caused a rubber spacer to wear out, resulting in gear misalignment and the sunroof switch not operating. The fix for that was one of two options: go pay the dealer an astronomical amount of money for a motor housing replacement, or replace rubber spacer with a 10 cent metal washer. Guess which one I chose? I also had a faulty resistor in the fuel tank, which made the fuel gauge suddenly report empty. Also replaced under warranty. Everything else was wear and tear. In those 18 years, I was involved in one collision where an oncoming vehicle ran a red light while I was making a left turn from the inside lane of two left turn lanes. That vehicle hit the one in the outside lane with sufficient speed to spin it around and push it into my front right bumper. Damage? Some bumper damage, a busted parking light, and cracked headlight. I unplugged them just in case, wrapped up the wires with electrical tape, and drove to my parents house for dinner. After all of this exposition, to really get a the meat of the question: the Mercedes was neither appreciably more expensive, nor less reliable. After 18 years, people still thought she looked like a reasonably new car. Between the comfort, reliability, sturdiness, efficiency, and feature set that she provided, those were all of the reasons I chose the Mercedes. Is my experience indicative of anyone else’s? Absolutely not, and there are myriad reasons why people choose more expensive vehicles over more affordable ones. They’re not always good reasons, but hey, what can you expect when you ask a blanket statement?

What is special about 2.0T car engines?
Short answer: They were originally intended to provide the best torque, and fuel efficiency plus horsepower available to achieve 30 mpg highway, and they accomplished their goals. But by the year 2010, new technology allows V6 motors to achieve 30 mpg or near it. In 2017, I bet Toyota could tell TRD to supercharge their Camry 2.5 to achieve 230 hp, and it would still return 30’s mpg plus equal horsepower as their Japanese and Korean rivals. Long answer: On a Friday, I drove a 2013 Toyota Camry automatic. During the trip, I was diligently using cruise control, and it was equipped with a 2.5 liter (2,500cc) four cylinder; and I drove over 1200 miles on I-5 from Oregon to California achieving 35 mpg on the highway (when driving the speed limits of 55 mph, 60 mph and 70 mph) with one stop for a rest to buy fuel and food before returning using the same route on a Monday; as a result, I believe that automotive manufacturers may have assumed the research and development testing of the first automotive company to equip a 2.0 (2,000cc) four cylinder with a turbocharger is the most fuel efficient combination. Keep in mind, the first 2.0 four cylinder engine was offered by Volvo and VW in the early 2000’s, so technology has allowed engines to increase displacement, and maintain 30 mpg + on the highways; however, if you want higher horsepower that 190 plus 30 + mpg, then the 2.0 turbocharger is the best option. ***One argument that people might believe in, is that because 2.0 turbochargers typically produce 230 hp and a 2.5 cc four cylinder are not typically equipped with a turbocharger, so power ranges are from 170–185 hp (depending upon the manufacturer); as a result, most car buyers might assume that horsepower is the benefit of a 2.0 and that it is both fuel efficient and powerful; however, when operating a 2.0 turbocharged vehicle under normal throttle conditions that are typical when driving, then the turbocharger is not always providing enough psi for the engine to make 230 hp unless the throttle has been depressed to its full capacity, or to the floor as they say, which is 100% throttle; however, when the throttle is held down to 2/10ths or 20% which is a typical position when cruising on the freeway; as a result, the turbocharger is not boosting to its full power limits, so the motor is not producing more horsepower nor torque than a 2.5 four cylinder at 2/10ths throttle without a turbocharger, and both can return similar highway mpg during these conditions.
